Description

9 COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRAL 2 2 FORM PATENTS ACT 1952 COMPLETE SPECIF I CAT ION FOR OFFICE USE: Class Int.Class Application Number: Lodged: Complete Specification Lodged: Accepted: Published: SPriority: Related Art: amenlv', j S Name of Applicant: Feltex Commercial Interiors Pty Ltd Address of Applicant: Centrecourt (Unit E2), 25-27 Paul Street North, NORTH RYDE, N.S.W. 2113 Actual Inventor: Michael Cuffe Address for Service: SHELSTON WATERS, 55 Clarence Street, Sydney SdComplete Specification for the Invention entitled: "CLIP ASSEMBLY" The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us:- Complete of PI 2164 Dated 27th May 1987 -1r j Lm The present invention relates to a clip assembly for use with modular office panelling of the type having a generally T-shaped groove provided in the joining members.
The grooves provided in the joining members of such panelling systems may be used for attaching fittings such as shelf supports, lighting or other items which it is desired to hang from such panels. In the past this has been done by use of a support element which slides into the top or bottom of the wide portion of the groove and JQ, located in the appropriate position by engaging an external fitting to the support element and forcing it against the inner face of the groove. This type of element has been found to work satisfactorily but has the disadvantage that when further fittings are required to be attached to the panel, fittings already in position must be removed or relocated to allow the new support elements to be slid into the groove.
The present invention seeks to overcome this problem by providing a support clip which can be fitted to said groove by being inserted into the opening thereof without the need to be slid into the groove from either end.
According to a first aspect, the present invention provides clip assembly comprising a pair of clip members each having an anchor portion adapted to be inserted into a T-shaped groove, each anchor portion having at least one outwardly extending detent, a channel-shaped flange portion provided on the end of each anchor portion, a spreader member adapted to be inserted into the channel 2 formed by said flange portions when said anchor portions are inserted into said groove and their inward surfaces slid into a confronting relationship, said spreader member acting to engage said detents with the inner surface of said groove to prevent withdrawal of said anchor portions.
For preference, said spreader member is provided with attachment means for fixing fittings to said support clip. The fittings themselves may also be formed with a portion adapted to fit into said clip assembly and act as said spreader member.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the r accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a clip portion of S the assembly according to the invention; Figure 2 shows an end elevation of the clip portion of Figure 1; Figure 3 shows a cross-sectional view of the clip assembly according to the invention positioned in a T-shaped groove; and Figure 4 shows a similar cross-sectional view to Figure 3 with a fitting channel in position.
Referring to the drawings, the clip portion 4 of the assembly comprises an anchor portion 5 having a number of detents 6 extending outwardly therefrom. A channelshaped flange portion 7 is provided at one end of the clip portion 4.
-3- 3 As shown in Figure 3, a pair of clip portions 4 are inserted into T-shaped groove 8 and aligned in confronting relationship so as to form a partially enclosed channel 9 between the channel-shaped flanges 7.
A spreader member 10 is slid into partially enclosed channel 9 and spreads clip portions 4 to engage the sides of the mouth 11 of the T-shaped groove 8. This spreading action also causes detents 6 to engage the inner surface 12 of the groove to prevent the clip assembly from being withdrawn from the groove. The anchor portions and detents are dimensioned so as to enable the anchor portions to be inserted into the groove and brought into confronting relationship within the mouth of the groove.
It is also desirable to arrange the distance between the ends of the detents 6 and the base of the flange 7 to closely approximate the thickness of the mouth portion of S the T-shaped groove so that the detents firmly engage the inner surface of the groove.
As shown in Figure 4, spreader member 10 may be 2U provided with a threaded bore 17 which engages a 0e complementary threaded screw or bolt 14. A fitting 0 09 channel 13 is arranged to closely fit around channel flanges 7 and bear against surface 15 of the T-shaped groove. The fitting channel 13 is provided with holes, slots or the like 18 to enable the screw 19 to pass through while causing the head 14 of the screw to bear against the outer face of the fitting channel 13.
In use, as the screw 19 is tightened the spreader 4 member 10 draws the clip detents into engagement with the inner surface of the groove while drawing the edges 16 of the fitting channel 13 into engagement with surface 15 of the t-shaped groove. This arrangement serves to firmly hold both the fitting channel 13 and the clip 4 in engagement with the t-shaped groove.
The clip is preferably formed by bending spring steel to the required shape and the detents formed by pressing out small areas of the anchor portion to form a barb. Plastics material may be also used to form the clip components.
The spreader member may be provided with threaded bores to enable fittings to be attached thereto.
,ttt, Alternatively, the fittings themselves may be used to form the spreading member and may be located in the clip assembly using grub screws or other suitable fixing means.
It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the invention is not limited to the specific embodiments described and further embodiments are possible without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention described.
