Timothy James Rooney, Spruson Ferguson, Patent Attorneys, Level 33 St Martins Tower, 31 Market Street, Sydney, New South Wales, 2000, Australia Complete Specification for the invention entitled: Louvred Cavity Wall The following statement Is a full deqcriptlon of this best method of performing it known to me/us invention, including the 5815/2 i _j L_ LOUVRED CAVITY NALL The present invention relates to the wall construction of buildings.
In tropical and sub-tropical climates, so called "native" dwelling houses often have removable curtain walls; for example, in the South Pacific region, some types of "bure" and "fale" have one or more curtain walls made of matting capable of being rolled up to allow cooling breezes to pass through the house. However, in climates which have hot summers yet cold winters, such thin walls have the abovementioned matting walls are unsuitable during the cold portion of the year, however desirable during the hot portion of the year. Still further, currently available louvre assemblies merely provide a single louvre panel which again suffers from the above discussed disadvantages.
It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate the above disadvantages.
o"1' 5 There is disclosed herein a louvre assembly comprising: a frame consisting of a pair of elongated generally parallel 0Q 00 o co-extensive transversely spaced supports; a first set of louvre panels pivotally supported by said supports so as to extend therebetween and to be pivotable about parallel first axes transverse of the supports, the panels being spaced along the support so that when in a closed first configuration the panels abut to provide a substantially continuous first wall; a second set of louvre panels, said second set of louvre panels o"o being spaced so that in a first closed configuration the panels abut to provide a substantially continuous second wall spaced by a cavity from the first wall; 0o a O a plurality of link members extending between and fixed to the a a two sets of panels so that each link member secures together a pair of the panels, with each pair consisting of one panel from the first set and an adjacent panel of the second set of panels; and an elongated actuating member substantially parallel and co-extensive with respect to the supports and pivotally attached to each pair of louvre panels so that movement of said actuating member moves the panels between their first configuration and an open second configuration allowing air to pass through the assembly, There is further Lisclosed herein a louvre assembly comprising: a '(consisting of a pair of elongated generallv parallel S/co-extensive tranvarsely spaced supports; ^if 3 a first set of louvre panels supported on said supports so as to extend therebetween, the panels being spaced along the support so that in a closed first configuration the panels abut to provide a substantially continuous first wall; a second set of louvre panels supported on the supports, said second set of louvre panels being spaced so that in a first closed configuration the panels abut to provide a substantially continuous second wall spaced by a cavity from the first wall; a plurality of link members extending between and fixed to the two sets of panels so that each link member secures together a pair of the panels, with each pair consisting of one panel from the first set and an -ro rA adjacent panel ,f"ithe second set of panels arranged parallel and co-extensive with respect to its saLd one pne P a pivot attaching each associated pair of panels to said 13 supports for pivoting about an axis transverse of the supports, with the pivots being arranged so as to be generally co-planar; and an elongated actuating member substantially parallel and co-extensive with respect to the supports and pivotally attached to each pair of louvre panels so that movement of saidk memer moves the panels between their first configuration and an open second configuration allowing 1 air to pass through the assembly, with said actuating member moving through an arc 'ith said link members, A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view of a louvre assembly to be mounted in a wall of a building, with the louvre panels in an open configuration; Figure 2 is a schematic perspective view of the louvre assembly of Figure I with the louvre panels in a closed configuration; Figure 3 is a schematic side elevation of the louvre assembly as shown in Figure 1; Figure 4 is a schematic side elevation of the louvre assembly as shown in Figure 2; Figure 5 is a schematic front elevation of the louvre assembly of Figure 1; and Figure 6 is a schematic exploded view of a pivot assembly employed in the louvre assembly of Figure 1.
L41 A I7 git I-~ -~p In the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted a louvre assembly 10. The assembly 10 includes a pair of elongated supports 11 which are vertically extending and are generally parallel, co-extensive and tranversely spaced. Extending between the ends of +h supports 11 is a top plate 12 and a bottom plate 13. Pivotally attached to the supports 11 at vertically spaced locations by means of pivot pins 23 is a first sat of louvre panels 14 consisting of a plurality of panels There is further provided a second set of panels 16 consisting of a I 44 4 4 4 s i4 4 4 4 tKLN/17971 4 j li-.; _i plurality of louvre panels 17. The panels 15 and 17 are arranged in pairs, with each pair consisting of one of the panels 15 and one of the panels 17.
Each pair of panels 15 and 17 is joined by an associated link member 18, which retains the panels 15 and 17 in a generally parallel configuration.
Attached to each pair of panels 15 and 17 is an actuating member 19 by means of pivot pins 24. The upper end of the actuating member 19 is attached to a drive element 21 which may be a flexible element such as a chain. The element 21 enters a conduit 2" which allows the element 21 and the elements of other louvre assemblies 10 to extend to a common control point so that the louvre assembly 10 may be remotely actuated by a winder or other similar mechatiism.
The actuating member 19 is moved between the position shown in Figure 1 and the position shown in Figure 2, to move the louvres 15 and 17 between an oper configuration, and a closed configuration. In the closed configuration the louvre panels 15 provide a generally continuous wall 31, while the louvre panels 17 co-operate to provide a generally continuous second wall 32, with the wall 31 spaced from the wall 32 by a cavity 33.
Loc ated adjacent the top plate 12 is a top louvre 26 moved between its open and closed position by means of a link 30. Mounted adjacent the bottom plate 13 is a bottom louvre panel 25 moved between an open and closed position by means of a pair of '(inks 20 and 29, joined by a pivot assembly 34 best seen in Figure 6. rhe pivot assembly 34 consists of a bracket 35 supporting a pivot pin 36 pivotally supporting the louvre panel Attached to the louvre panel e5 is a further bracket 37 which receives a pivot pin 38 to which there is attached the link 29, Each of the louvre panels 15 and 17 is provided with a recess 28 which receives the tongue 27 of the vertically adjacent panel 15 or 17.
If so required a screen panel 39 may be located within the cavity 33.
