Description

SECURITY GRILL
This invention is concerned with improvements in and releting to security grills and in particular internally
mounted removable type for emergency purposes.
Many types of security grills are presently available, but the present invention has been devised to overcome the disadvantages of the type that is fitted onto the outside, preventing access through the opening in case of emergency, access for cleaning and opening the windows. Furthermore, this invention is further devised to overcome the
disadvantage of the type having readily accessible connecting means such as visible screws and rivets and the like and to provide an assembly which may be assembled across any
existing window or door in which all fastening means are concealed whereby entry through a window or door can only be gained by forcing the security bars. A further object of this invention, is to produce a security grill assembly system that can be mass-produced on a production basis and supplied as a do-it-yourself system. Unlike conventional security grills, which are custom made, fitted onto the outside of the windows, exposed to the elements and therefore require
maintenance. The invention broadly comprises an upper and lower member for securing a number of bars, said lower member comprising a hollow housing, locking slide slidably mounted in the
housing, openings in the housing to accept the stud ends of the bars and the slide having interengageable catch means to secure the stud end of the bars in the housing when the slide is in a first position and release the stud for removal from the housing when the slide is in the second position, locking means to retain the slide in the first position, said
openings also giving access to securement means whereby the housing is able to be secured to a support, said securement means being occluded when the studs are in place in the housing.
The invention in several forms is hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the security grill
according to the invention incorporating a locking member and a support member.
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of Fig. 2 when in the locked position.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the stud and the method used to fasten the stud into a tube which makes up the security bars.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of the lower housing showing the slide member in the open position.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 but in the locked position.
Fig. 6 is an underneath view of the lower housing
showing the locking arrangement in the open position to accept the studs.
Fig. 7 is a similar view to Fig. 6 but in a locked
position.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the support bolt for the slidably mounted slide. Fig. 9 is a top perspective view of the lower housing showing the bar openings and openings for the slidably mounted slide support bolts.
Fig. 10 is a view of an alternative design for the lower housing formed from an extrusion.
As illustrated, the locking device comprises a locking member 2 and a support member 1. The locking member 2 comprises a hollow housing which provides support for the slide 8 said support provided by bolt 4 which fits through hole 23. The bolt 4 has a square shoulder under its head which locates into square hole 23 to prevent rotation during securing of spacer 16 with nut 17. The spacer 16 controls the limit of movement of the slide 8 by a slot means 20 into which a reduced shoulder on spacer 16 fits into. Stud 9 fits through hole 18. Fig. 6 shows lower housing member 2 in open position allowing entrance of stud 9 into hole 18. Cam 13 on lock 6 rotates cam 13 through an arc providing movement to actuator 14 connected to slide 8 by means of rod 15. Fig. 7 shows lock rotated into the locked position and in so doing slot 19 in slide 8 has moved into the reduced recessed diameter of stud 9 thereby securing stud 9 into the lower housing member 2. The slide 8 is movable between limits determined by the engagement of slots 19 with spacer 16. The movement of the slide is
provided by a cam 13 attached to a barrel of a lock,
rotatable by locking pins being released by key 5 (in known manner). The slide 8 has keyhole apertures 19 arranged so as to have the larger portion aligned with the holes 18 in the lower housing member 2 when the slide is in the open position as in Fig. 6 and Fig. 4 which shows the cam 13 and its connection to slide 8 via actuator 14.
Looking now at Fig.3, stud 9 is provided with a reduced diameter portion 25 to form a shoulder into which the smaller portion of slide slot 19 engages as it slides through its movement. The stud shoulder 26 limits the penetration of the stud 9 into the lower housing 2 and at the same time align the slide keyhole apertures 19 with grooves 25. From Fig. 4, 5, 6 and 7, the functioning of the device is evident, namely, when the slide 8 is located so as to allow studs 9 to pass into he housing through holes 18 and slots larger portion 19 and so align grooves 25 with the keyhole apertures 19. The slide 8 is moved into the locked position by cam 13 actuation thereby engage the smaller portion of the keyhole aperture 19 in the groove 25 to prevent the withdrawal of the stud end of the bars or (as depicted in this specification Fig. 3) tubes.
The housings 1 and 2 are secured to a surface by fastening means passing through holes 18 and to provide access to securing plate 10 having hole 11 through which is inserted an appropriate fastener. Access to holes 18 and hence the fastening means is through holes 11 in securing plate 10 and thus the retaining means is inaccessible from outside the housing when the studs/bars are in place. This is a security feature of the device.
The housings 1 and 2 is an uncomplicated rolled channel and so is the slide 8 and come in long sections, suitable for any length window or door or any other application that requires such long secured areas.
Fig. 6 shows rod 15 and spring 22 which provides spring loaded means to actuator 14 allowing disengagement of
actuator 14 from cam 13 for assembly and disassembly
purposes. The spacer 21 provides the actuator 14 with
pivoting means for connection to cam 13 during assembly of slide 8 into lower housing 2.
Fig. 10 shows an alternate form for the lower housing 2 with sliding support ribs 24 to support a slide and obviating holes 23 slots 20 bolts 4 spacer 16 and nut 17. The limiting movement of the slide can also be provided by the cam 13 and actuator 14 via rod 15 mounted in the slide.
Upper housing 1 is provided with larger holes to accommodate tube 3 as shown in Fig. 2. Once the slide has been moved to the unlocked position Fig. 4 and Fig. 6 the bar or tube 3 can be moved into and upward into the upper housing 1 clearing the stud 9 from the lower housing surface 2 and removed.

Claims (9)

THE CLAIMS DEFINING THE INVENTION ARE AS FOLLOWS:
1. A housing assembly for a security grill, said housing member comprising a locking slide slidably mounted in the housing, openings in the housing to accept the stud portion of the security bars or tubes, having interengageable catch means to secure the bars in the housing when the slide is in a locked position and release the bars or tubes for removal from the housing when the slide is in the unlocked position, locking means to retain the slide in the locked position, said openings also giving access to securement means whereby the housing is able to be secured to a support, said
securement means being occluded when the bars or tubes are in place in the housing.
2. A security grill, said grill assembly having a member comprising a housing, slide guide means in the housing, an elongated slide slidably mounted in the slide support means, openings in the housing, said openings providing access to the sliding mechanism, a catch slot means in the slide for each stud, an enlarged zone of each catch slot means to permit the stud to pass therethrough, a narrower elongated catch slot zone to pass over the reduced cross section of the stud, means to limit the degree of penetration of the stud into the housing and thereby align the reduced cross section portion of the stud with the catch slot narrower zone.
Locking means to releasably retain slide in a locked position where the catch slot narrower zone is in engagement with the reduced cross section portion of the stud, locking means to retain the slide in the open position so the enlarged slot portion is in alignment with the access opening for the stud and further permit the housing member fastening means to be passed therethrough into support plate, said further
openings being aligned with access openings in the housing which are occluded when the slide retains the studs portion of the bars.
3. A security grill as claimed in claim 2 wherein each stud is securable in the housing by said slide.
4. A security grill as claimed in claim 2 wherein said locking means includes an externally operable key lock with a associated part in the housing engageable by operating the lock through an actuator connected to the slide in the housing.
5. A security grill as claimed in claim 2 including a shoulder on each stud to limit the admission of the stud through the opening of the lower housing.
6. A security grill as claimed in claim 2 including means projecting from the housing and attached to the slide thereby enabling the slide to be supported in the housing an removed from said housing by removing said slide supports.
7. A security grill as claimed in claim 2 provided with removable slide supports in order for ease of assembly by being able to slide the slider into the housing and connect actuator to cam.
8. A security grill as claimed in claim 2 wherein the means to slidably retain the slide comprises of sliding support ribs.
9. A security grill as claimed in claim 2 wherein the means to slidably retain the slide comprises headed spacers engaged in slots in the slide.
