P 0 BOX 2606 WODSN A.C.T. 2606 RE: PATENT APPLICAT NO. 74045/87 EXAMINED BY: H DEREK BARNES REPORT NO. 2 TRA AN L PROPOSED AMENDMENT NO. 2 HEATING INSTALLATION The invention relates to a water heating installation, running under pressure of water supply source, suitable for the central heating installations in Domestic Commercial or Industrial Buildings.
A. THE DESCRIPTION OF THE COMPOUND PARTS Instalations of this kind comprise, as shown in Diagram No.
i, the following parts: a. Water supply pipe connected straight to the Boiler and proviTed with a swing check valve b. Heating Boiler from which they are connected a riser warm (hot) water pipe and a cool (cold) water pipe The boiler is an usual system used at the present in houses, either smaller for villa units or bigger for Cbntral Heatings, comprising all necessary control 1,evices, incl uding those regarding gas or fuel burning.
c. A hot water riser pipe which starts in the upper part of the boiler, cross a BwtY check valve it connects the radiators in their upper part and goes to the Pneumatic Ram 2.
d. A cool water pipe which starts from the Pneumatic Ram bottom and goes straight to boiler, with a gradient of about 2% connecting, on its travel, the lower stubs of the radiator T6, T7, e. The Pneumatic Ram In fact the idea of the invention is an installation for Central heating based on this Pneumatic Ram.
In order to clarify what a pneumatic ram is, the following details are necessary: What we are talking about is a sealed vessel, egg shaped, placed at the highest position possible of the installation.
The shape of the pneuntic ram vessel, is designed as an egg because it offers the following advantages: S' oa) In the upper section: The pressure develops a uniform tension in the metallic walls, without bending moment.
The point where the safety valve is fixed, is in the best position.
9t.9 The air pocket occupies a good space to have enough room for a slow motion, b) In the lower secton: The cooler water is easily pushed through central pipe placed on the bottom of the vessel, The walls are protected against the Bending Moment, too.
S As we can see in Diagrams No. 2 anid 3 the inlet of the hot water pipe is placed two thirds up from the bottom of the vessel and the outlet of the cooler water pipe, is connected to the bottom t of the vessel.
On the top of the pneumatic ram, there is a safety valve used to release the over pressure in case the inner pressure is over the specified set pressure.
Normally, the pneumatic ram works under water supply pressure, eliminating the additional installation used generally for Central Heating.
I- 3.
c) The Bypass Pipes for Domestic Warm Water Supply (11) d) Different Fittings, as: The Boilers, the Radiators, the taps, the pipes, the pressure gauge (safety valve) retaining valves, either horizontal ball types, or swing check valves, which lets the water flow in one direction only, are optional.
B. THE FUNCTIONING OF THE HEATING INSTALLATION The filling up of the installation with cold water from water supply is done at once through boiler both through hot water pipe and through cool water pipe (4) and ends and gathers finally in the Pneumatic Ram The existing air found in the installation, in the first stage, is pushed up in the pneumatic ram vessel under of •wa'Ler supply pressure, as an air pocket, and suddenly it is created a balance between pressures (Diagram No. 2).
The air layer which remains inside of the vessel, pushed to Stits top, will work as a pump in the circulation of the water.
SIn Diagram No. 3 it is shown the second stage, how the F, ;pneumatic ram functions.
i iit The hot water from boiler, due to: Its light density.
(ii) The increasing volume (average (iii) Difference of the water levels .,etween pneumatic ram and boiler) starts to raise and goes through the radiators and ends up in the pnc ',.i:atic ram where it pushes up the air layer, compressing it.
In Diagram No. 3, we can see that the level a-a becomes b-b and then an over pressure is created in the air layer.
For balance, the air layer pushes down the cooler water through the bottom pipe to the boiler. At this process helps the fact that the cooler water has a heavier density and tends to substitute the place of the hot water gone up from boiler to the pneumatic ram.
The process repeats itself, cyclicly, assuring the water circulation. i It must be mentioned that 'the motion of the water circulation and the development process is slow.
If the water is heated up to the boillnD point, its circulation will be substantially improved by the formation In,- of the steam bubbles, which push up the hot water quicker.
4.
During travelling the warm (hot) water crosses the radiators and heats them.
Besides the control devices, which there are on the boiler, for the convenience of the owner in controlling of the space U temperature, a thermostat (10) is attached to one of the radiators, which gives a signal lighting) while the temperature rises or moves down against a set temperature placed on at the boiler.
The retaining valve provided on the hot water pipe (3) fitted between the boiler outlet and the first radiator inlet ltdoes not allow the hot water from the heating installation to return to the boiler during the functioning of the domestic hot water supply.
The retaining valve provided on the water supply pipe o is fitted before the boiler, does not allow the heated a 0water from boiler to go back against the water supply.
°o Within the installation, there are many taps from which: prac oe T1 the water supply pipe.
T2 the warm water pipe.
T3 the domestic warm water supply.
T4 the cool water pipe.
T5 the cleaning outlet pipe.
T6, T7, T8 (more if necessary) taps, at the outlets of the radiators.
C. DOMESTIC WARM WATER SUPPLY In the Summer, the installation may be used for producing a domestic hot water supply, being provided by the necessary by pass and the connected components, pipes and taps.
It is enough to close T2 and open T4 and the hot water from the boiler will go straight to the domestic hot water supply network.
If it is desired that to use the installation at once for Gis, heating and for domestic water supply then it is necessary that a cold water pipe travel within a standard exchange which works under water supply pressure. This installation will be apart ind a separate addition to the heating installation.
