Existing set-squares for scribing or testing angles in carpentry or metal working etc. are of a rigid nonadjustable construction. As a result their utility is normally limited to either a right angle or the other preset complementary angles.
It is therefore an object of this invention to ameliorate the aforementioned disadvantage and accordingly an adjustable set-square is disclosed which comprises a ight-angle triangular blade with a calibrated scale along the hypotenuse and at least one of the acute angles thereof truncated, a rib having a longitudinal slot extending part way along its length from one end and being pivotably attached at said end to the right angle vertice of the blade in a manner whereby said blade is slidable wholly within the slot and the rib is movable either along said scale or completely clear of said blade by passing the other closed end of the rib over said truncated corner and said closed end also being configured to complete the profile of said truncated corner when the rib is aligned with an adjacent edge of the blade.
A preferred embodiment of this invention will now be described with reference to the attached drawings in which: Figures 1 and 2 show side and perspective views of a adjustable set-square with the shoulder mamber at the degree position, Figures 3 and 4 show side and perspective views of the setsquare with the shoulder member at an intermediate angle of 65 degrees.
*4 1 t t I r .2 hne device basically comprises a triangular blade 1 which in this case includes a right angle 2 and two complementary -2a- L 450 angles 3 and 4. It is to be understood however that the invention is not limited in this respect and other angles could be substituted for those illustrated. A rib 5 is pivotably attached to the triangle at the right angle vertice S'by a bolt and thumb nut.6. This member has a central slot 7 through which side 8 of the triangle may slide to allow the rib to align with any selected position from 00 to 900 along an angular scale 9 intermediate the ends of the hypotenuse 10 as shown in figures 3 and 4. The thumb nut can then be tightened ft to lock the rib in the desired position. For rigidity this t slot 6 terminates short of the free outer end of the rib I r i t c and one corner 11 of the triangle is therefore truncated to enable the side 8 to clear this end as the adjustment is made. Preferably however the end face 12 of the rib is sloped to complete the profile of the triangle when it is \aligned parallel with the side 8 at the 900 mark.
In use the device provides substantial advantages over existing tools such as the conventional set-square. By aligning and locking the rib 5 at a selected angle and then 4t t *t placing the shoulder 12A up against a reference edge on a work piece such angle can be quickly and precisely scribed across the surface of the piece using the straight edge 13. Conversely existing angles on a work piece can be tested by placing the shoulder against the reference edge and then rotating the blade 1 until the straight edge 13 aligns with the face or mark to be measured.
Although not shown in the drawings it is preferred that the -3opposite side of the hypotenuse 10 also be marked so as to provide the complementary angle of that shown on scale 9 to form a 1800 or straight joint between two mating faces.
Because of the speed and accuracy provided by this tool it is envisaged that it would be particularly useful in applications such as the assembly and fitting of gutters on buildings where a wide range of angled joints have to be accurately cut for downpipes and eaves.
7 It will thus be appreciated that this invention at least t t ;r rr r I ct i in r.ne rorm or tne emooaiment aescrioea provides a novel and unique tool for carpentry, metalwork or the like.
Clearly however the particular example disclosed is only the currently preferred form of this invention and a wide variety of modifications may be made which would be apparent to a man skilled in the art. For example the shape and configuration of the rib as well as the magnitude of the angles in the triangle may all be varied according to application or design preference. Also while the device in it's current form is preferably constructed of metal other materials such as plastics or even wood may also be used within the scope of this invention.
