This invention relates to an improved tipping trailer vehicle, more particularly a semi-trailer vehicle for carrying containers, bins and the like. While the invention is particularly directed to semi- trailer vehicles it could be applied to four wheel trailers with either single or bogie axles at either or both ends.

In the handling of large containers such as sea containers one method is to tip the trailer and winch the container onto the inclined bed of the trailer. However with these vehicles with multiple axle rear wheels, when the load bed is tipped and the lopded container is handled,the load is not equally shared by all axles of the rear bogie, but the rearmost axles takes virtually all of the load.

It is an object of this invention to provide an improved tipping bed for a semi-trailer or trailer vehicle.

Thus there is provided according to the invention a tipping load vehicle, the vehicle having a load carrying bed pivoted at its rear end to a suspension system of a rear bogie unit such that the load is at all times equally distributed among all axles, depending brackets on said bed forwardly of the rear pivot, said bracket being pivoted to the rear of a main frame connected to a turn-table on the prime mover, and hydraulic rams connected between the front of the main frame and the load carrying bed.

Referring to the drawing, the invention comprises of a prime mover 1 having lower mounting of a turn-table 2 of a semi-trailer unit. The upper member of the turn-table 2 is mounted oin the forward end 3 of the main frame 4.

The frame 4 is pivoted at its rear and by pivots to brackets 6 attached to a load bed 7 which has towards its rear further brackets 8. The brackets 8 are pivoted by pivot pins 9 to the centre of longit-cudinal spring members 10 pivoted at its ends to the axles 11 of the rear dual bogie axle system.

A pair of hydraulic rams 12 are connected between the forward end of the frame 4 and the load bed 7. The load bed 7 is pivoted at its rear to the suspension of the rear wheels, and attached by brackets 6 to the frame 4, the bracket 6 being forwardly of the rear wheels.

Rams 12 extend rearwardly from the front of the frame 4 and will be seen that by extension of the rams that they will raise the load bed 7, pivoting about pivot 9, the rear of the bed 7 passing either between the rear wheels or outside of the wheels.

The front end of the bed 7 can be provided with a winch or the like to pull the container up the load bed. In its lowermost position the bed 7 issupported at its forward end on rests of the forward end of the frame 4.

Preferably the pivot pin 13 joining the piston rods of the rams 12 to the load bed 7 is comprised of a cross bar extending across the width of the bed. Large bosses are ~rcovided on the piston rods to give a large bearing area and thus this solid pivot bar extending across the width of the bed and the large bearing area of the bosses on the piston rods engaging the pivot bar provides the stiffness and rigidity of the bed at this point to virtually eliminate any twisting or misalignment of the load bed relative to the main frame. /i

In this respect also the connection of the ram cylinders to the main frame 4 preferably also by a solid pivot pin passing across the main frame, the ram cylinders also being provided with wide or large bosses to thus provide rigidity of the unit to prevent sideways slewing, misalignment, twisting and the like.

It will be seen according to the invention that the provision of the tilting bed which is pivoted directly on the suspension system of the rear wheels ensures that the load is equally distributed amongst all the wheels during the loading .nd tilting operation.

While the invention has been described with reference to a dual axle bogie, it can be applied to a single axle system, and also a triple axle bogie system as lorng as the suspension is such that the load is applied to the axles equally irrespective of the angle of tip of the load frame.
