Abstract

Proposed is a device for sealing a lance (12) into an aperture leading into a pressurized vessel, in particular a shaft furnace. The device comprises a first housing (46) one end wall of which faces the furnace and the other the surroundings, each of the end walls having an aperture through which the lance (12) passes, plus a seal (14) fitted in the first housing (46). The seal (14) includes at least one sealing ring (50) and at least one axially movable annular piston (52) located coaxially to the longitudinal axis (24) of the device, the sealing ring (50) being located between the piston (52) and one of end wall of the first housing (46) in the line of motion of the piston (52). When the piston (52) is actuated, the sealing ring (50) is pressed in the longitudinal direction against one end wall of the housing (46), thus causing the ring (50) to widen in the radial direction and to form a seal round the lance (12).
