RULE 3 - The winner 15 3.1 The winner of the game, is the player who scores the most goals in the thirty minute period. 3.2 If the game is tied at the end of thirty minutes, then normal play will continue for a period of 5 minutes, with the first player to score being the winner. RULE 4 - The target ball / Soccer ball 20 4.1 The ball used for scoring is a standard white billiard / snooker ball. RULE 5 - Number of team balls per team 5.1 On the large snooker tables the number of team balls per side is ELEVEN. On the smaller tables the number of team balls per side is SIX. The team balls have different coloured uniforms to distinguish the sides. 25 5.2 The goalkeeper may have a different coloured top to the rest of their team balls.
WO 00/66234 PCT/AU00/00344 -13 RULE 6 - The number of players. 6.1 Two or more players can play the game. 6.2 The player's use a player ball called a team ball. RULE 7 - The start of Play" Kick Off" 5 7.1 The soccer ball is placed in the centre of the pitch for the kick off. 7.2 A flip of a coin decides which team will kick off. The winner of the coin toss decides the direction in which they wish to kick and takes the kick off. 7.3 The two "kick off" team balls need to be placed on the half way line, in the kick off circle, to ensure the soccer ball is passed forwards at the start of play. 10 These are the only team balls allowed in the circle at the beginning of the game. The soccer ball must be passed before a shot at goal can be taken. 7.4 Each team ball must be placed in their own half of the field during the start of play. They can be placed in any formation. 7.5 After the first goal is scored, only the soccer ball is replaced on the centre 15 spot. RULE 8 -Play 8 .1 Players will play alternately, unless the soccer ball is passed, or if a goal is scored, then the side against whom the goal has been scored will take the next kick off. 20 RULE 9 - Passing the soccer ball. 9.1 A player can pass the soccer ball between separate team balls on their side as many times as they like before a shot at goal is taken. The first team ball of either side struck by the soccer ball, is the side that has the right of possession. 9.2 A pass is denoted as one of your team balls hitting the soccer ball, which then 25 hits another one of your team balls. You can not pass to the same team ball, i.e. have two consecutive hits with the same team ball. 9.3 A pass is deemed to have been unsuccessful, and results in a turn over of possession, if the soccer ball does not hit any team balls. 9.4 It is an acceptable pass if the target ball rebounds off the cushions the goal 30 posts back onto the same ball, or if the team ball rebounds of the cushions onto the soccer ball, after initially hitting the soccer ball.
WO 00/66234 PCT/AU00/00344 -14 9.5 The soccer ball must be passed during a goal kick, kick off, throw in. 9.6 If the shot at goal or pass is unsuccessful, then it is your opponents turn. If your team ball fails to hit the soccer ball, it is a turn over of possession. 9.8 If you knock one of your team balls into anyone of the pockets, the fallen team 5 ball will stay out of play. 9.9 If you hit the soccer ball during your possession and the soccer ball knocks one of your opponents team balls in a pocket or the goal, your opponents' team ball is lost to the game. 9.10 A player must have at least one foot on the floor whilst playing the game, or it 10 will result in a turn over of possession. RULE 10 - Scoring 10.1 A goal is scored when the soccer ball completely crosses the white goal line. 10.2 A goal can be scored by a clean hit of the soccer ball into the goal, by rebounding off a team ball on either team, or off a cushion. 15 10.3 The goal is like a pocket. If one of your team balls is knocked into your goal, by the soccer ball, or as a result of rebounding off the soccer ball during an attempt by the other team to score, your team ball is lost to the game and deposited in a pocket. This includes your goalkeeper. Depositing your team ball in a pocket must be undertaken straight away. 20 10.4 If an opposing player, misses the soccer ball and hits your team ball, and knocks your team ball into the goal, then it is a turn over of possession. 10.5 One goal equals one point. RULE 11 - Goal kick 11.1 Goal kicks are awarded when your opponent knocks the soccer ball into one 25 of the corner pockets at the same end as your goal, or off the end of the table. 11.2 If your opponent passes the soccer ball, and the soccer ball then hits an opponents team ball and falls into an end pocket, the first team ball hit, that is, your opponents team ball, is considered to have caused the loss of the soccer ball to the table. 30 11.3 A goal kick is taken from anywhere in the Goal Square, but on the same side that the soccer ball left play. 11.4 The opponents team balls can remain in the goal area when a goal kick is WO 00/66234 PCT/AU00/00344 -15 about to be taken. 11.5 You can not score directly from a goal kick. An attempt to do so will result in the turn over of possession. 11.6 The goalkeeper or a team ball from your side that is closest to the soccer ball 5 can take a goal kick. When taking the goal kick, the soccer ball is picked up by hand and placed in position in the goal area. The goalkeeper or closest player is also picked up by hand and placed behind the soccer ball to proceed with the kick. RULE 12 - Re positioning the defence 10 12.1 At the beginning of your turn you can choose to reposition one of the following team balls, either team ball number 1, number 2 or number 3. The re positioning action is a one off optional action at the beginning of your play, it does not affect your turn. Re positioning means to replace players back into your own half using the cue. 15 12.2 You can re position your goalkeeper, team ball number 1, in the goal area by using a cue, wherever they are on the pitch. 12.3 The team ball number 2, or team ball number 3, can be re positioned if they leave his or her own half. If the re positioning move is unsuccessful in returning either ball number 2 or 3 to its respective half, the re positioning move has still 20 been played, the player is not penalised, they continue with their normal course of play. 12.4 You must state you are taking a re positioning shot when undertaking re positioning. 12.5 If during the re positioning you knock one of your team balls into the goal or a 25 pocket, you loose the team ball that has been pocketed, and it is a turn over of possession. 12.6 If you hit one of your own team balls during the re positioning, it is a turn over of possession. 12.7 If you hit one of your opponent's team balls during the re positioning, it is a 30 turn over of possession. 12.8 If you hit one of your team balls numbered 4 - 11 in an attempt to reposition WO 00/66234 PCT/AU00/00344 -16 them on the pitch, choose not to take your turn, fail to hit the target ball, or take over 60 seconds to play your shot, it is a turn over of possession. RULE 13 - Throw ins 13.1 If you knock the soccer ball into a central side pocket, or over the side of the 5 table it is your opponents 'throw in'. A throw in is an indirect free kick taken from anywhere in the side pocket semi circle lines, which are located around the pocket. You must pass the soccer ball using your closest team ball. 13.2 When taking the throw in, the soccer ball is picked up by hand and placed in position in the throw in semi circle lines. The closest player is also picked up by 10 hand and placed behind the soccer ball to proceed with the kick. RULE 14- Corners 14.1 If you knock the soccer ball out of play in your own half, that is over the side or into your ends pockets, it is your opponents' corner kick. 14.2 You can score directly from a corner kick. 15 14.3 The corner is taken with your closest player. 14.4 When taking the corner, the soccer ball is picked up by hand and placed in position in the corner semi circle lines. The closest player is also picked up by hand and placed behind the soccer ball to proceed with the kick. RULE 15 - The goalkeeper 20 15.1 The game is played with a team ball, goalkeeper, (player number one), placed in the goal area. 15.2 If the goalkeeper is knocked into his / her own goal or any other pocket during an attempt on Goal, or during the course of play, they are lost to the game. 15.3 The goalkeeper can play anywhere on the pitch. 25 RULE 16- Foul Shot 16.1 A foul shot made by yourself in your own penalty area will result in a penalty. 16.2 If you miss the soccer ball and hit an opponent's team ball with your team ball or the cue, it is a turn over of possession. 16.3 If a player's clothing or body should touch any team ball or target ball it will 30 result in a turn over of possession.
WO 00/66234 PCT/AU00/00344 -17 16.4 Striking the team ball with any part of the cue other than the tip will result in it being the opponents turn. 16.5 A push stroke will result in a turn over of possession being awarded. A push stroke is defined as when the tip of the cue remains in contact with the team ball 5 once it has commenced its forward motion. RULE 17 - A Penalty 17.1 The penalty area on a large table is a rectangular box 700mm x 450mm. It encloses the goal area, and it is identified by a white line 5mm wide. On a smaller table the penalty area is 350mm x 225mm. 10 17.2 A penalty is a foul shot made by you in your own penalty area. 17.3 A penalty is taken from the penalty spot. The soccer ball is placed by hand on the penalty spot, and the striker is anyone of your team balls still on the table. They are not moved to take the penalty, they play the shot from where they are on the pitch. 15 Penalty infringements inside the penalty area: Missing the soccer ball and hitting an opponent's team ball. This includes the re positioning play. If a player's clothing or body should touch any team ball. Striking the team ball with any part of the cue other than the tip. 20 A push stroke. A push stroke is defined as when the tip of the cue remains in contact with the team ball once it has commenced its forward motion. RULE 18 - Loss of a player 18.1 During the course of play, if you knock your own team balls into one of the pockets, into your own goal, or off the pitch, you will lose that team ball for the 25 duration of the game. 18.2 During the course of play, if you knock one of the opponent's team balls into one of the pockets, or into a goal, or off the pitch, without hitting the soccer ball first, it will be a turn over of possession. The pocketed team ball is still lost to the game.
WO 00/66234 PCT/AU00/00344 -18 RULE 19 - Loss of the Game 19.1 A player who clearly fails to make an attempt to shoot or pass in the proscribed manner. 19.2 A player who seeks to gain advantage by deliberately touching a moving ball. 5 19.3 A player who knowingly breaks the rules of the game. RULE 20 - The cue 20.1 The cue shall not be less than 910 mm in length and shall show no substantial departure from the traditional and generally accepted shape and form. 20.2 " Rests" may be used to provide a bridge for the cue. 10 The game apparatus 10 may further comprise a referee ball (not shown). The referee ball is a standard billiard ball inscribed with the following markings: OFF, YELLOW CARD, LOSS OF POSSESSION, FREE PLAY. Typically, the referee ball is initially placed on the sheet of flexible material. If a team ball or a target ball hits the referee ball, then the team ball that struck the 15 referees ball will be subject to the ruling which corresponds to the markings appearing uppermost thereon. The referee ball is not moved from its new location. In Figure 3 there is shown a game apparatus 36 in accordance with a second embodiment of the present invention. The game apparatus 36 is substantially 20 identical to the game apparatus 10, and like numerals designate like parts. However, the sheet of flexible material 12 is inscribed with markings 38 resembling those of a standard field hockey field. In use, the game apparatus 36 is similar to the game apparatus 10. However, an example set of rules by which a billiard game based on field hockey can be played 25 differs to the rules described for the game apparatus 10, in the following respects: RULE 5 - Number of team balls per team 5.1 On the large snooker tables the number of team balls per side is ELEVEN. On WO 00/66234 PCT/AUUU0/U0344 -19 the smaller tables the number of team balls per side is SIX. The team balls have different coloured uniforms to distinguish the sides. RULE 7 - The start of Play" Centre Pass" 7.3 One team ball needs to be placed on the half way line, to ensure the target 5 ball is passed backwards into their own half at the start of play. All the other teams balls must be situated at least ten centimetres away from the target ball at the start of play. The target ball must be passed before a shot at goal can be taken. RULE 11 - Free Hit 11.1 A free hit is awarded for fouls committed outside the shooting circle or PLAY 10 ON can be played. 11.2 A free hit is taken from the nearest free hit spot that is marked on the 25 yard line. 11.3 When taking the free hit, the Hockey ball is picked up by hand and placed in position. No other team ball is moved by hand to establish the shot. Players must 15 take the free shot using team balls in their current positions. RULE 12- Penalty Corner 12.1 A penalty corner is awarded when the defending team knocks the Hockey ball either into an end pocket or over the end cushion, at the end they are defending. 20 12.2 A penalty corner is an indirect free strike taken from anywhere in the end pocket semi circle lines, which are located around the pocket. The pocket chosen for this corner is the nearest pocket to where the incident took place. The Hockey ball must be passed using your closest team ball. 12.3 When taking the penalty corner, the Hockey ball is picked up by hand and 25 placed in position in the throw in semi circle lines. The closest player is also picked up by hand and placed behind the Hockey ball to proceed with the kick. RULE 13 - Penalty Strikes 13.1 A penalty strike is awarded when the defence commits a foul inside the shooting circle. 30 13.2 A penalty strike in is a direct free strike taken from the penalty point in the WO 00/66234 PCT/AUUU/UU544 - 20 shooting circle. 13.3 When taking the penalty strike, the Hockey ball is picked up by hand and placed in position. No other team ball is moved by hand to establish the shot. Players must take the penalty using team balls in their current positions. 5 RULE 17- Foul Shot 17.1 A foul shot will result in a turn over of possession and either the choice of playing on or taking a Free Hit, rule 11, or Penalty Stroke rule 13, depending on where the foul shot occurred. In Figure 4 there is shown a game apparatus 40 in accordance with a third 10 embodiment of the present invention. The game apparatus 40 is substantially similar to the game apparatus 10 and 36, and like numerals denote like parts. However, the sheet of flexible material 12 is inscribed with markings 42 resembling those of a standard Australian rules football field. Further, the two goal net apparatus 14 are replaced by two goal post assemblies 44, each goal 15 post assembly 44 resembling a scaled down set of Australian rules football goals, and comprising four upright members in the form of two goal posts 46 and two point posts 48, mounted normally to a base 50. The game apparatus 40 further comprises an elliptical target ball (not shown), formed of a material of similar properties to that from which conventional billiard balls are formed, and being of 20 comparable size and weight to a standard billiard ball. The two goal post 46 are located adjacent each other and are interposed between the point posts 48, the distance between adjacent goal 46 or point 46 posts being approximately equal, the goal posts 44 being taller than the points posts 48. The goal post assemblies 44 are each provided with a non-return means in the 25 form of a plurality of curved deflection surfaces 52 adapted to entrap the elliptical target ball in the goal post assembly 44. In use, the game apparatus 40 is similar to the game apparatus 10 and 36. However, an example set of rules by which a billiard game based on Australian WO 00/66234 PCT/AUUUIUU344 -21 rules football can be played differs to the rules described for the game apparatus 10 in the following respects: RULE 4 - The target ball / Football 4.1 The ball used for scoring is an elliptical white billiard / snooker ball. 5 RULE 5 - Number of balls per team 5.1 On the large snooker tables the number of team balls per side is EIGTEEN. On the smaller tables the number of team balls per side is NINE. The team balls have different coloured uniforms to distinguish the sides. RULE 7 - The start of Play" Bounce Down" 10 7.1 The Football is placed in the centre of the oval for the kick off. 7.3 An opposing team ball from each team attempts to pass the Football backwards or sidewards to their team balls at the same time. The Bounce down is denoted by a whistle from the referee or an agreed person stating "Start". 7.4 The two "Bounce down" team balls can be placed anywhere on the perimeter 15 of the centre circle, but not directly opposite each other. A total of four team balls from each team can be placed between the centre circle and the centre square. Only the two Bounce Down team balls can be placed on the centre circle perimeter at the beginning of the game. The players must take the Bounce Down shot whilst standing on the same side of the table. 20 7.5 The remaining team balls from each team are placed anywhere on the oval and in any formation. The Football must be passed before a shot at goal can be taken. 7.6 The centre circle bounce down only occurs at the start of the game. RULE 8 -Play 25 8 .1 The players will play alternately, unless the Football is passed, or if a goal or a behind is scored. When a goal has been scored then the side against whom the goal has been scored will take the next kick off, from the goal area. 8.2 If a goal is scored the Bounce Down is taken from the centre circle, by moving the Football by hand and replacing it on the centre point. This is the only ball to be WO 00/66234 PCT/AUUU/MU44 - 22 moved. 8.3 If a behind is scored the behind is taken from the goal area. This is the only ball to be moved. RULE 10 Scoring 5 10.1 A goal is scored when the Football completely crosses the white goal line between the two central goal posts. 10.2 A behind is scored when the Football completely crosses the white behind lines between the behind post and the central goal post, or hits anyone of the goal posts. 10 10.3 If the Football hits a behind post it is play on, and no points are awarded. 10.4 A goal is 6 points. 10.5 A behind is 1 point. 10.6 A goal / own goal / behind can be scored by a clean hit of the Football into the goal, or rebounding off a team ball on either team, or off a cushion. The 15 Football must completely cross the goal / behind lines for points to be awarded. An own goal is when your team ball scores the goal into his own goal. 10.6 If an opposing player, misses the Football and hits your team ball, and knocks your team ball through the goal / behind posts, your team ball is lost to the game and it is a turn over of possession. 20 10.7 When a goal or behind is awarded, the defending team kick the ball into play by placing the Football into the goal square by hand, and placing the closest team ball behind the Football to take the kick - in. You can not score from this kick - in. Rule - 11 Marking the ball. 11.1 If a pass is successfully completed to one of your team balls that is in a 25 position between the 50 - metre line and the goal, you can claim "A Mark". The Football is placed by hand on one of the three mark spots, and the nearest one to where the mark took place. The player who obtained the mark may have a shot at goal. The Football is the only ball that can be moved during this play. If however you wish to PLAY ON, the player has the option to leave the Football where it is 30 and continue with the game as per normal. 11.2 There can be two consecutive marks made by the same team. The team ball that took the mark can have one re positioning shot to place him/her into a more WO 00/66234 PCT/AUOU/UOU344 - 23 advantageous position to take the shot. 11.3 After three consecutive marks there must be a shot at goal or a pass, without a marking attempt. RULE 12- The Kicks in. 5 12.1 Kick ins are awarded when your opponent scores a behind. The kick in is taken from anywhere in the goal square. 12.2 The opponents team balls can remain in the goal area when a kick - in is about to be taken. 12.3 You can not score directly from a kick in. A successful attempt to do so will 10 result in the turn over of possession. 12.4 The team ball from your team that is closest to the target ball takes the kick in. When taking the kick in, the Football is picked up by hand and placed in the goal area. The closest team ball is also picked up by hand and placed behind the Football to proceed with the kick. 15 RULE 13 - Re positioning the defence 13.1 The team ball number 1 can be re positioned from anywhere on the oval. 13.2 Team balls 2, and 3, can be re positioned wherever they are out side of their 50 - metre line. The re positioning move must place the Football inside their own 50 - metre line, or it is a turn over of possession. 20 13.7 If you hit one of your team balls numbered 4 - 18 in an attempt to reposition them on the pitch, or choose not to take your turn, it is a turn over of possession. RULE 14 - Kick ins 14.1 If the player who initiates the shot knocks the Football into a central or side pocket, or over the side or end of the table it is their opponents 'Kick in'. A kick in 25 is an indirect free kick in taken from anywhere in the side pocket semi circle lines, which are located around the pocket. The kick - in is taken from the pocket or closest pocket to where the Football went out of play. You can score a goal from a kick - in. 14.2 When taking the kick in, the target ball is picked up by hand and placed in 30 position in the kick in semi circle lines. The closest player is also picked up by hand and placed behind the target ball to proceed with the kick in.
WO 00/66234 PCT/AUUU/UU344 - 24 14.3 If you hit one of your team balls numbered 4 - 18 in an attempt to reposition them on the pitch, or choose not to take your turn, and fail as a consequence to hit the Football. In Figure 5 there is shown a game apparatus 54 in accordance with a third 5 embodiment of the present invention. The game apparatus 52 is substantially similar to the game apparatus 40 and like numerals are used to denote like parts. However, the sheet of flexible material 12 is inscribed with markings 56 resembling those of a standard rugby league football field. Further, the two goal post assemblies 44 are replaced by two conversion post assemblies 58, each 10 conversion assembly 58 resembling a scaled down set of rugby league conversion posts and comprising a post assembly 60, a base plate 62, and a portion of net material 64. The post assembly comprises two upright members 66 and a cross bar 68. The upright members 66 are joined, at a point intermediate ends thereof, by the cross 15 bar 68. The portion of net material 64 is provided above the cross bar 68, in the space defined by the cross bar 68 and the two upright members 66. The game apparatus 54 further comprises two safety net assemblies 70. Each safety net assembly 70 comprises an arcuate base portion 72, extending vertically from which are two inner vertical members 74, and two outer vertical members 76. 20 Suspended by the vertical members 74 and 76 is a net portion 78. The arcuate base portion 72 is provided with two projections 80, adapted to releasably secure the safety net assembly 70 to the conversion post assemblies by way of complementary recesses 82 provided therein. Each safety net assembly 70 of the game apparatus 54 is intended to be placed 25 behind one of said conversion post assemblies to receive errant balls. The game apparatus 54 further comprises a conversion apparatus 84 adapted to facilitate the elevated propulsion of the elliptical target ball from the surface provided by the sheet of flexible material.
WO 00/66234 PCT/AUUU/UU344 - 25 In one form, the conversion apparatus 84 is adapted to be releasably fitted to the end of a standard billiard cue 86 and adapted to releasably support and position the elliptical target ball by way of an approximately circular depression 88 provided in an upper surface 90 of the conversion apparatus 84, as can best be 5 seen in Figures 6 and 7 The conversion apparatus 84 further comprises a guide means by which a further standard billiard cue (not shown) can be guided into contact with the elliptical target ball when supported and positioned by the conversion apparatus 84, in the form of a guide channel 92. The guide channel 92 begins at approximately the 10 point of attachment of the conversion apparatus 84 to the billiard cue 86, and terminates at the circular depression 88 in which the elliptical target ball is positioned. The width of the guide channel 92 decreases as the guide channel 92 approaches the circular depression 88, such that at the depression, the guide channel is marginally wider than the tip of a standard billiard cue. A lower surface 15 94 of the conversion apparatus 84 is convex. Referring now to Figures 8 and 9, in an alternate form, the conversion apparatus 96 is free standing, and comprises a ramp portion 98 and a seat portion 100, wherein the seat portion is adapted to releasably position the elliptical target ball 102 above the planar surface, and the ramp portion 98 is adapted to guide and 20 elevate a standard billiard ball from the planar surface, into contact with the elliptical target ball 102. Referring now to Figure 10, in a further alternate form, the conversion apparatus 104 comprises a disc-shaped base portion 106, having a circular depression 108 on a surface thereof. The circular depression 108 is adapted to releasably 25 partially receive the elliptical target ball. It appears that, of the conversion apparatus 84, 96 and 104, the conversion apparatus 104 is the most easily used. In use, the game apparatus 54 is similar to the game apparatus 10. However, an example set of rules by which a billiard game based on rugby league can be played differs to the rules described for the game apparatus 10 in the following 30 respects: WO 00/66234 PCT/AU00/00344 - 26 RULE 4 - The target ball / Rugby ball 4.1 The ball used for scoring is An elliptical white billiard / snooker ball. RULE 5 - Number of balls per team 5.1 On the large snooker tables the number of team balls per side is THIRTEEN. 5 On the smaller tables the number of team balls per side is SEVEN. The team balls have different coloured uniforms to distinguish the sides. RULE 7 - The start of Play" Kick Off" 7.1 A flip of a coin decides which team will kick off. The team that looses the coin toss becomes the defensive team. They decide the direction in which they wish to 10 kick and take the kick off. 7.2 At the start of play the Rugby ball must be kicked forwards beyond the 10 metre line, and remain in the opponent's half for this kick off. The Rugby ball is placed on the centre spot on the half way line by hand. Kick offs occur at the beginning of the game, or after a field goal has been scored. The team that has 15 had the field goal scored against them takes the next kick off. 7.3 Each team ball must be placed in their own half of the field during the first kick off, and placed either on or behind their 10 - metre line. They can be placed in any formation. This is the only kick off where the team balls are placed in their own halves. During subsequent kick offs the team balls stay where they are on 20 the table. 7.4 After the first try is scored, and an attempt at a conversion has been successfully made the Rugby ball is replaced on the centre spot for the opponent to take the kick off. If the conversion has not been scored, the target ball is placed on the centre point on 22 - metre line. The defending team takes the kick off, and 25 becomes the offensive team. RULE 8 -Play 8 .1 The players will play their offensive and defensive shots alternately. 8.2 The teams take turn in being on the offensive and on the defensive. 8.3 The defensive team is the one that took the kick off. The offensive team is the 30 team into whose half the Rugby ball is kicked during the kick off. They have six attempts to score a try. This means that the offensive team can pass the Rugby WO 00/66234 PCT/AU00/00344 - 27 ball amongst its team balls six times, without the defensive team trying to intercept the Rugby ball. During the offensive team's play the defensive team can only try to knock the offensive team's balls into a pocket, any pocket, or into a less advantageous position. 5 8.4 The defensive team when trying to knock the offensive team balls into a pocket, any pocket, or into a less advantageous position, can play their team ball directly onto an offensive team ball. The defensive team must ensure there is no direct and indirect contact with the Rugby ball or from any other ball on the table, if there is this is called a foul shot. Direct contact means your team ball hits the 10 Rugby ball first instead of an opposing team ball first and then the Rugby ball. If you do make direct or indirect contact with the Rugby ball your opponent obtains an additional six offensive shots starting from their next shot. 8.5 If the offensive team is successful and scores a field goal as a result of a try, they are awarded another 6 attempts to score a try, that is another six offensive 15 plays. The Rugby ball is placed on the centre spot on the half way line by hand, and the team that has just conceded a goal, kicks the Rugby ball into the offensive team's half. Only the Rugby ball is moved for this kick off. 8.6 If the offensive team scores a try but fails to score a field goal, then it is a turn over of possession. The Rugby ball is placed by hand between the inbound lines 20 on defensive team's 22-metre line, the defensive team now become the offensive team. Only the Rugby ball is moved by hand for this kick off. The Rugby ball must be kicked forwards. 8.7 If the offensive team ball does not complete a successful pass during their six offensive plays, then the Rugby ball is considered to have been intercepted. The 25 defensive team now takes the offensive. A pass is denoted as team ball hitting the Rugby ball, which in turn hits another team ball, and the Rugby ball rolls backwards or sideways behind the team ball that was passed to. Passes can be indirect, that is the team ball hits the Rugby ball and it in turn hits a goal post or cushion and then a team member. 30 RULE 9 - Passing 9.2 A pass is denoted as one of your team balls hitting the Rugby ball, which then hits another one of your team balls, and the Rugby ball finishes up behind or in WO 00/66234 PCT/AU00/00344 - 28 line with the team ball it has passed to. If the Rugby ball rolls forwards of the team ball it has hit, this is deemed to be a forward pass, which is illegal and will result in a turn over of possession. 9.6 If the conversion attempt or pass is unsuccessful, then it is your opponents 5 turn. RULE 10 - Scoring 10.1 The team that takes the kick off becomes the defensive team. The offensive team has six attempts to score a try. A try is scored when the Rugby ball is successfully passed to a team member who is in the in goal area. The goal area is 10 between the line stretching across the pitch in line with the goal posts (goal - line) and a line indicating the end of the pitch. A try is worth 3 points. 10.2 To score a try the pass can be a forward pass. A forward pass is where the Rugby ball can roll forwards after hitting the team ball. This is the only occasion the target ball can roll forwards from a passing shot and remain a legal pass. 15 10.3 The team that score a try may try to score an extra 2 points by taking a conversion and scoring a field goal. The field goal kick is taken from the closest conversion point 22-metre line, using the conversion apparatus. 10.4 To score a conversion the Rugby ball must be played into the field goal pocket, over the cross bar and between the two upright posts. The field goal tee is 20 placed in position by hand, and the closest team ball is placed in position by using the cue, to take the conversion kick. 10.5 During the course of play a player may choose at any time to kick a field goal which is worth 3 points. A team ball re positioning move is not allowed to assist this field goal attempt. If the field goal attempt fails to score, it is an automatic turn 25 over of possession. 10.6 The conversion apparatus is needed for this shot. The only ball to be moved in this play is the Rugby ball, which is picked up by hand and placed onto a conversion tee at the exact point where the Rugby ball was situated on the pitch. 10.6 An indirect pass can also score a try. An indirect pass is a pass is where a 30 team ball rebounds the target ball off a cushion or goal post, back onto the same team ball or a team ball from the same side. To score a try, the team ball that is passed to must be in their opponent's end zone.
WO 00/66234 PCT/AU00/00344 - 29 10.7 An defending team ball could inadvertently pass indirectly to an attacking team ball, as long a the attacking team ball was in their opponent's end zone, and score a try. 10.8 The goal is two up right post with a cross bar, and the uprights continuing 5 upwards from the cross bar. 10.9 After a try is scored, and an attempt at a conversion has been successfully made the Rugby ball is replaced on the centre spot for the opponent to take the kick off. 10.10 After a try is scored, but the attempt at a conversion fails, the Rugby ball is 10 placed on the centre point of 22 - metre line. The defending team takes the kick off. RULE 11 - Corner throw - ins. The corner throw ins are taken from the centre point on the 10 - metre line that crosses the 22- metre line, and on the same side as the pocket the Rugby ball fell 15 into, or went over the end cushions. You can not score directly from a corner throw - in. RULE 12 - Centre throw - in 12.1 If you knock the Rugby ball into a central side pocket, or over the side cushions, it is your opponents centre throw - in. The centre throw ins are taken 20 from the centre point on the 10 - metre line that crosses the half way line. You must pass the Rugby ball using your closest team ball. 12.2 When taking the centre pocket throw - in, the Rugby ball is picked up by hand and placed in position. The closest team ball is also picked up by hand and placed behind the Rugby ball to proceed with the centre pocket throw - in. The 25 offensive team has to pass the ball before it can attempt a try. During a Centre pocket throw - in no field goal attempts are allowed. RULE 13 - Re positioning 13.1 You can reposition team ball 1, 2, or 3, from anywhere on the pitch to anywhere onto the pitch. 30 13.2 During the re positioning shot team balls 1, 2, & 3 can hit another one of their fellow team balls, to assist replace this team ball into an advantageous position.
WO 00/66234 PCT/AU00/00344 - 30 These are the only team balls that can be hit during a re positioning move. 13.4 You must state you are taking a re positioning shot when undertaking re positioning. RULE 14 - Foul Shot 5 14.3 A foul shot between the 22 - metre line and the goal line is a penalty. 14.4 Penalties are taken for the nearest conversion spot. A penalty shot is the same as a conversion shot and is taken by using the closest team ball to hit the Rugby ball. The Rugby ball is placed on a conversion tee on the nearest conversion point, and the re positioning of this team ball is undertaken with the 10 cue. 14.5 If the offensive team undertakes the foul shot they immediately loose the offensive status. If the defensive team undertakes the foul shot they award the offensive team six more offensive plays. 14.2 If the foul shot has pocketed the Rugby ball, then either the rules of corner 15 throw - in or centre throw - in apply. If the Rugby ball is still on the table, it is played from the spot it has rolled to. In Figure 11 there is shown a game apparatus 110 in accordance with a fourth embodiment of the present invention. The game apparatus 110 is substantially similar to the game apparatus 52 and like numerals are used to denote like parts. 20 However, the sheet of flexible material 12 is inscribed with markings 112 resembling those of a standard rugby union field. In use, the game apparatus 110 is similar to the game apparatus 10. However, an example set of rules by which a billiard game based on rugby union may be played differs to the rules described for the game apparatus 10 in the following 25 respects: RULE 4 - The target ball / Rugby ball 4.1 The ball used for scoring is an elliptical white billiard / snooker ball. RULE 5 - Number of balls per team 5.1 On the large snooker tables the number of team balls per side is FIFTEEN.
WO 00/66234 PCT/AU00/00344 -31 On the smaller tables the number of team balls per side is SEVEN. The team balls have different coloured uniforms to distinguish the sides. RULE 7 - The start of Play" Kick Off" 7.2 A flip of a coin decides which team will kick off. The team that looses the coin 5 toss decides the direction in which they wish to kick and takes the kick off. 7.3 At the start of play the Rugby ball must be kicked forwards to the 22 - metre line, and the Rugby ball must remain in the opponent's half for this kick off. 7.4 Each team ball must be placed on or behind their own 10 - metre line, at the start of play. They can be placed in any formation. This is the only kick off where 10 the team balls are placed in their own halves. During subsequent kick offs the team balls stay where they are on the table. 7.5 After the first try is scored, and an attempt at a conversion has been successfully made the Rugby ball is replaced on the centre spot for the opponent to take the kick off. 15 7.6 After the first try is scored, but the attempt at a conversion fails, the Rugby ball is placed on the centre point of 22-metre line. The defending team takes the kick off. RULE 9 - Passing the Rugby ball. 9.1 A player can pass the Rugby ball between separate team balls on their side 20 as many times as they like before an attempt at a try is taken. The first team ball of either side struck by the Rugby ball, is the side who has the right of possession. 9.2 A pass is denoted as one of your team balls hitting the Rugby ball, which then hits another one of your team balls, and the Rugby ball finishes up behind or in line with the team ball it has passed to. If the Rugby ball rolls forwards of the team 25 ball it has hit, this is deemed to be a forward pass, which is illegal and will result in a turn over of possession. 9.5 The Rugby ball must be passed after a kick off, or throw in. 9.6 If the conversion attempt or pass is unsuccessful, then it is your opponents turn. 30 9.7 If your team ball fails to hit the Rugby ball, it is a turn over of possession. 9.8 If you hit the Rugby ball during your possession and the target ball knocks one of your team balls or one of your opponents team balls into a pocket, the pocketed WO 00/66234 PCT/AU00/00344 - 32 team ball is lost to the game. 9.9 If you hit a team ball against an opposing team ball, without hitting the Rugby ball it is a turn over of possession. Rule - 10 Marking the ball. 5 10.1. If a team ball from the opposing team is inadvertently passed the Rugby Ball whilst they are situated between their 22 - metre line and the goal line, the ball is said to have been marked or caught. 10.2 You can place the Rugby ball by hand on the mark spot, which is the centre point between the goal posts, or choose to PLAY ON. The only ball to be moved 10 by hand is the team ball. The Free kick is taken with any team ball situated wherever they are on the pitch. Players have the option to leave the Rugby ball where it is and continue with the game as per normal. RULE 11 - Scoring 11.1 A try is scored when the Rugby ball is successfully passed to one of your 15 team balls who is in the in goal area. The goal area is between the line stretching across the pitch in line with the goal posts (goal - line) and a line indicating the end of the pitch (dead ball line). A try is worth 5 points. 11.2 To score a try the pass can be a forward pass. A forward pass is where the Rugby ball can roll forwards after hitting the team ball. This is the only occasion 20 the Rugby ball can roll forwards from a passing shot and remain a legal pass. 11.3 An indirect pass can also score a try. An indirect pass is where a team ball re bounds the Rugby ball off a cushion and back onto the same team ball in goal zone. An indirect pass can also be a team ball re bounds the Rugby ball off a cushion and back onto another team ball from the same team ball in goal zone. 25 11.4 The goal is two up right posts with a cross bar. When a try is scored, the team ball may try for a conversion. A conversion is when the Rugby ball is hit over the cross bar and into the conversion pocket. WO 00/66234 PCT/AU00/00344 - 48 The goal assemblies 160 are substantially identical to the goal assemblies 136. However, the goal assemblies 160 further comprise a backboard member 162, interposed between the ring and net assembly 146 and the upper portion 142 of the pole member 140. 5 In use, the game apparatus 156 is similar to the game apparatus 10. However, an example set of rules by which a billiard game based on basketball may be played differs to the rules described for the game apparatus 10 in the following respects: RULE 5 - Number of team balls per team 10 5.1 On the large and small snooker tables the number of team balls per side is FIVE. RULE 7 - The start of Play" Jump Ball" 7.1 The Basketball is placed in the centre of the court for the Jump Ball. 7.2 An opposing team ball from each team attempts to tip/pass the Basket ball 15 backwards or sidewards to their team balls at the same time. The Jump ball is denoted by a whistle from the referee or an agreed person stating" Start". 7.3 The two "Jump Ball" team balls can be placed anywhere on the perimeter of the centre circle, but not directly opposite each other. Only these two Jump Ball team balls can be placed in or on the centre circle perimeter in their opponent's 20 halves for the jump ball. Both the players playing for the Jump ball must stand on the same side of the table. 7.4 The remaining team balls from each team are placed anywhere on the court. 7.5 If the Jump ball fails to achieve a successful pass or pockets the Basketball in a centre or corner pocket then the team with the nearest team ball to the 25 Basketball will be in possession of the play. 7.6 If the Basketball has been pocketed, then the nearest team ball will take a centre or corner throw - in depending on which pocket the Basketball has been pocketed into. 7.7 After the any basket is scored, the only ball moved is the Basketball, and it is 30 replaced anywhere on the base line for an in bounds throw - in, by the team that was scored against.
WO 00/66234 PCT/AU00/00344 - 49 RULE 8 -Play 8 .1 Players will play alternately, unless the Basketball is passed, or if a basket is scored, then the side against whom the basket has been scored will throw the ball in bounds, that is a throw - in. 5 8.2 The throw - in to put the Basketball in bounds is taken from any point on the throw in line. The throw - in lines extend forwards from the end cushion 5 centimetres and to the side 3 centimetres. RULE 9 - Passing the target ball / Basketball. 9.3 If the Basketball hits the basketball post it is deemed to be out of bounds. 10 9.4 The Basketball must be passed during a corner throw - in, centre throw - in, and an in - bounds throw - in. 9.5 If the shot at the basket does not rebound onto a team ball from your side, the pass is unsuccessful, then it is your opponents turn. 9.61f your team ball fails to hit the Basketball, it is a turn over of possession. 15 If you knock one of your team balls into anyone of the pockets, the fallen team ball will stay out of play, unless it is team balls numbered one, two and three. These balls can be replaced into the semi circular line around the pocket, waiting to get back into the game. 9.7 If you hit the Basketball during your possession and the Basketball knocks 20 one of your opponents team balls in a pocket or the goal, your opponents' team ball is lost to the game unless it is team balls numbered one, two and three. These balls can be replaced into the semi circular line around the pocket, waiting to get back into the game. RULE 10 - Scoring 25 10.1 A basket is scored when the Basketball completely enters the basket and drops into the basket's pocket. 10.2 A basket can be scored by a clean hit of the Basketball into the basket, by rebounding off a team ball on either team, or off a cushion. 10.3 If a basket is scored from a shot made onto the Basketball whilst it is inside 30 the three point line, 2 points are scored. If a basket is scored from a shot made onto the Basketball whilst it is outside the three point line, 3 points are scored. Players can use a shooter's tee to assist the scoring attempt. The shooter's key is WO 00/66234 PCT/AU00/00344 - 50 placed under the Basketball, by hand, on the exact spot that the Basketball had come to rest. This is the only ball to be moved during the shot for the basket. 10.4 Foul shots inside the 3 - point line give the opposing team two free throws or a PLAY ON can be played. Foul shots outside the 3 - point line but inside their 5 own half, give the opposing team three free throws or a PLAY ON can be played. A free throw occurs by the placing of the Basketball by hand on the free throw line. The closest team ball that is going to assist the free throw is placed by hand behind the Basketball. This occurs for each free throw. A free throw that successfully scores a basket is worth 1 point. 10 10.5 On the last free throw attempt if the basket is scored it becomes an in bound throw -in to the team defending the basket. If the basket is not scored the Basketball will be in possession of the first team ball it hits, or the defensive team if the Basketball fails to hit an offensive team ball. RULE 11 - In Bound throw - ins 15 11.1 The last player that initiated the shot is deemed to be the offending ball. The opponent team is awarded the In bound throw - in. 11.2 In bound throw - ins are taken by the closest team ball. 11.3 In bound throw - ins are awarded when your opponent scores. 11.4 In bound throw - ins are taken from the In bound throw - in line, which is in 20 line with the basket. 11.5 You can not score directly from an In bound throw - in. An attempt to do so will result in the turn over of possession. 11.6 The team ball from your team that is closest to the Basketball can take an in bound throw - in. When taking the throw - in, the Basketball is picked up by hand 25 and placed in position behind the throw - in line. The closest team ball is also picked up by hand and placed behind the Basketball to proceed with the throw in. RULE 12 - Re positioning 12.3 If during the re positioning you knock one of your team balls or your 30 opposition's team balls into a pocket, unless they are team balls numbered one, two and three, the team ball that has been pocketed is lost to the game, and it is a turn over of possession. Team balls one, two and three are re positioned inside WO 00/66234 PCT/AU00/00344 -51 the semi circular lines of the pocket. 12.8 If you hit one of your team balls numbered 4 - 5 in an attempt to reposition them on the pitch, choose not to take your turn, or take over 30 seconds to play your shot, it is a turn over of possession. 5 RULE 15- Foul Shot A foul shot results in a turn over of possession. If a defending team makes a foul shot inside their 3 - point line, two free throws or a PLAY ON can be awarded. If a defending team makes a foul shot outside the 3 - point line but inside their own half, three free throws or a play on can be awarded. 10 It is envisaged that the sheet of flexible material 12 may be manufactured in sizes to suit standard billiard tables. It is further envisaged that the traditional game may be selected from the group of: croquet, racquetball, golf, baseball, tennis and cricket.
