Description

Australia Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE
SPECIFICATION
STANDARD PATENT Gravity Operated Odourless Dust Bin The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me: Gravity Operated Odourless Dust Bin This invention is an improved type of garbage bin which has a sturdier and more durable mechanism for opening and closing the bin, allows the user to keep their hands clean and provides an air-tight seal.
Many garbage bins available today have lids, which are hinged at the top in some manner and require that the user touch them with their hands and so risk contamination by dirt and germs.
Pedal bins generally have a number of moving parts which can break, their lids are relatively light, meaning that they do not create a good seal and they also have projections at their back which can damage paintwork when they are pushed against walls. These bins are also usually round, which means that they do not fit well into the cupboards and spaces where they are located.
These problems are overcome by the present invention which provides a foot operated garbage bin that has only one moving part and yet closes itself by the use of gravity and produces a strong and airtight seal. The more weight there is in the bin the tighter it closes.
By placing the pivot at the bottom and front of the boxes gravity causes the internal box to fall back into position automatically when the pedal is released. The pedal itself stops the internal box from opening further than its centre of gravity when it comes into contact with the ground and yet the internal bin can swing out nearly 180 degrees if the bin is tipped on its back for cleaning.
The bin has no projections at the back top or sides to damage paintwork on walls and being square fits easily into available spaces.
To assist with understanding the invention, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings which show one example of the invention.
In the drawings: Figure 1 shows a side-on cut away drawing of this device.
Figure 2 shows a front-on drawing of this invention.
The invention consists of two open boxes, which can be constructed of plastic, metal or similar materials. The external box is open at the front with a slight lip at the top to avoid having people pinch their hand if they happen to rest it on the bin. The internal box is open at the top and is angled downwards towards the back to avoid contact with the top of the external box while at the same time increasing storage capacity. These boxes are attached to each other by a strong pin at the sides of the internal box at the bottom front. This pin fits into a hole on the inside face of the external box at the bottom front.
The internal box is tipped forward by pushing the pedal (4) down with your foot. The pedal stops the internal box from moving past its centre of gravity by coming into contact with the ground. The front of the internal box is forward of the external box and it is the overlap which stops it falling back beyond the vertical position. There is a seal on the inside edge of the internal box's front which can be made of rubber, silicon or similar materials which in addition to the seal (7) across the bottom front of the external box gives an airtight seal once the bin is closed. The front bottom edge of the internal box is rounded to prevent contact with the seal and so avoid damage to the seal.

Claims (4)

1. A garbage bin consisting of two boxes, one inside the other, with the external box open at the front and the internal box open at the top with them hinged to each other by their front edge or sides at the bottom front comer and opened by a pedal.
2. The garbage bin of claim 1 where the front of the internal box is outside of the external box and overlaps its edges to stop the internal box falling past the vertical and to create a seal.
3. The garbage bin of claims 1 and 2 where a seal across the bottom of the external box makes the bin airtight.
4. The garbage bin of claims 1 to 3 where the top of the internal box is angled downwards towards the back to prevent contact with the top of the external box when it is pulled forward while allowing increased capacity. The garbage bin of claims 1 to 4 where the front bottom edge of the internal box is rounded to prevent contact with the bottom seal so as to avoid damage. William Greening 6 May 2002
