COMPLETE SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT Invention Title: An applicator head and method for fixing a corner finishing component The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to us:- FIELD OF INVENTION The invention comprises an applicator head for use in fixing a comer finishing component such as a paper-covered plaster board corner finishing component, to finish the corner between the wall and ceiling surfaces in a house or building, and a method for fixing a corner finishing component.
BACKGROUND OF INVENTION GIBCOVETM is a paper-covered plaster board product which is curved in crosssection and which is commonly used to finish the corner between the ceiling and one or more wall surfaces in houses or buildings. The common practice is for a fixing compound to be applied along or adjacent the edges of the GIBCOVETM product by troweling following which the GIBCOVE
T
M is raised and pressed into 15 place.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION The invention provides an improved or at least alternative method for fixing a 20 paper-covered plaster board comer finishing component such as GIBCOVE T M or other comer finishing component, and an applicator head for use in conjunction with apparatus for delivering an adhesive or fixing compound under pressure in doing so.
In broad terms in one aspect the invention comprises an applicator head for use with apparatus capable of delivering an adhesive or fixing compound under pressure to said applicator head, and for use in fixing a finishing component along a corner between a wall and ceiling surfaces, said applicator head including two angled faces for contacting the wall and ceiling surfaces, a channel in each said angled face, an inlet port to the applicator head for the supply of adhesive or fixing compound under pressure from said apparatus to the applicator head and outlet ports one into each said channel for delivering the compound into each said channel and from the applicator head, said channels and outlet ports being 1/1 so positioned in said angled faces that drawing of the applicator head along a said corner between a wall and ceiling surfaces will apply the adhesive or fixing compound in two lines one to each of the ceiling and wall surfaces and so spaced from the intersection thereof to enable fixing of said finishing component along said corner by said lines of adhesive.
In broad terms in another aspect the invention comprises an apparatus capable of delivering an adhesive or fixing compound under pressure and comprising an applicator head as described for use in applying two lines of said adhesive or fixing compound, one to each of adjacent wall and ceiling surfaces and spaced from the intersection thereof for fixing of a corner finishing component along a ecorner between said wall and ceiling surfaces.
In broad terms in a third aspect the invention comprises a method for fixing a 15 corner finishing component along a corner between a wall and ceiling surfaces, comprising applying two lines of an adhesive or fixing compound, one to each of the ceiling and wall surfaces and so spaced from the intersection thereof to enable fixing of said finishing component in said corner by said lines of adhesive, by an apparatus including an applicator head comprising two angled faces each 20 including an outlet for delivering the adhesive or fixing compound from the applicator head, and including drawing said applicator head along said corner between the wall and ceiling surfaces to apply the adhesive in said two lines, and :*then placing said corner finishing component in said comer to be held in place by said two lines of adhesive or fixing compound.
The applicator head of the invention may be used with a standard manually operated pump or "syringe" of the type commonly used with various delivery attachments for applying wet plaster, or with any other suitable form of apparatus capable of delivering an adhesive or fixing compound under pressure to the applicator head, in the application as will be further described. The applicator head, apparatus, and method of the invention are particularly suitable for use in the installation of paper-covered plaster board corner finishing components which are curved in cross-section such as GIBCOVET
M
but may also be used in installing any other corner finishing component such as a plaster cornice. The applicator head and method of the invention enable an operator to install any such comer finishing component more easily and conveniently.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The invention is further described with reference to the accompanying drawings, by way of example and without intending to be limiting, in which: Figure 1 shows use of a hand operated "syringe" capable of delivering adhesive or fixing compound under pressure and having fitted thereto the preferred form V. applicator head to apply two lines of adhesive along the corner between a wall and a ceiling surface, prior to installation of a corner finishing component, 15 Figure 2 is a cross-section view of a comer between a wall and a ceiling surface after fitting of a corner finishing component into place against the two lines of adhesive previously applied as shown in Figure 1, Figure 3 shows the preferred form applicator head from the rear, Figure 4 is a three-quarter view of the preferred form applicator head from above, and Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view of the preferred form applicator head along line A-A of Figure 4.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION Figure 1 shows a person applying two lines of adhesive or fixing compound along an inside corner using a pump or "syringe" 1 having the preferred form applicator head 2 fitted thereto. The user holds the pump or "syringe" which has previously been filled with the wet adhesive or fixing compound, and operates the pump while drawing the applicator head along the corner as shown to apply to the two lines 3 of the adhesive or fixing compound, one on each of the wall and ceiling surfaces. After the two lines of adhesive or fixing compound have been so applied, the paper-covered plaster board finishing component or GIBCOVETM, or other corner finishing component such as a plaster cornice for example, is placed in the comer against the two lines of adhesive or fixing compound previously applied.
Referring to Figure 2, the GIBCOVE TM or similar is fixed in place by the two lines of adhesive or fixing compound 3 so applied. The lines are applied along the wall and ceiling surfaces so as to be appropriately spaced from the intersection of the wall and ceiling surfaces for the size or dimensions of the comer finishing component or GIBCOVE T M being installed.
Referring to Figures 3 to 5, the preferred form applicator head comprises a front face 4 and two angled faces 6 and 7 which in use will contact the wall and ceiling surfaces. Channels 8 and 9 are formed in the angled faces 6 and 7. The applicator head has an inlet port 10 by which adhesive or fixing compound is supplied from the pump or syringe and outlet ports 11 and 12 into the channels 8 and 9.
The channels 8 and 9 are so positioned in the angled faces 6 and 7 that, when the applicator head is drawn along in use, the two lines of adhesive or fixing compound will be applied to the wall and ceiling surfaces appropriately spaced from the comer intersection of the wall and ceiling surfaces for fixing of the comer finishing component. Preferably for 90mm size GIBCOVE T M the channels 8 and 9 are positioned to apply the lines of adhesive to each of the wall and ceiling surfaces within 60 to 100mm from the intersection thereof, and for GIBCOVETM the channels 8 and 9 are positioned to apply the lines of adhesive within about 30 to 60mm from the intersection of the ceiling and wall surfaces.
One form of commonly available plaster pump or syringe has a generally ballshaped outlet fitting enabling the fitting to the syringe of one of a number of applicator heads for different applications, and in the preferred form applicator head of the invention shown in the drawings the inlet port 10 is formed as a socket enabling the applicator head to be attached to such a generally ballshaped outlet fitting of a plaster syringe or similar. To hold the applicator head in place a spring clip (not shown in the drawings) is fitted in slots 15 in the rear of the applicator head. Any other suitable arrangement for attaching the applicator head to the outlet of a syringe or other apparatus capable of delivering the adhesive or fixing compound under pressure may be used however, and it is also possible that in a dedicated tool the applicator head may be an integral part of the tool.
The foregoing describes the invention including a preferred form thereof.
Alterations and modifications as will be obvious to those skilled in the art are intended to be incorporated within the scope hereof, as defined in the accompanying claims.
