Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys 530 Collins Street Melbourne, Victoria, 3000, Australia Invention Title: APPARAL~TUS FOR PRACTISING GOLF T-he following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best me-tho~d of performing it known to meq,: a S-ho I d.332SZs FIELD OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to an apparatus for strengthening and toning body muscles involved in a person's golf-swing as well as for grooming a consistent sw.ing.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Golf is a game which requires a significant amount of practise in order to achieve consistency and improve scores. Practice is aimed at improving control and also at achieving greater distances. Achieval of these aims requires in particular repetition of the basic golf swing or at least portions thereof but while repetition will greatly improve consistency, improvement in power and distance is more limited.
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide an apparatus which not only improves consistency of swing. but also strengthening and tones the muscles actively used in a golf swing in order to improve distance.
THE INVENTION A. According to the invention, an aparatus for practisinQ golf includes a handle for gripping by the user, and a resistance means attached to the handle.
In the preferred torm ot' the invention, the handle comprises a shortened version of a golf-club and is identical in size and shane to a conventional golf club. at least with reference to the rto cortion. in the preferred form this handle comprises stee! with a conventional erio thereover.
In one fomn, of the invention the resistance is crovided by' anchorin2 means wvhich comrises a hook. loQo or the like retaining formation which may be secured to a suitable point on a floor. in the garden or even near rhe ase o a wall means ofa line, cord or the like. In this formi the line should be elastic and e!astic round 'oand has obeen found to oe suitable.
4- However this form of the invention has been found to have limitations in that it is not always possible to maintain an even tension throughout the practise stroke and further the elastic line will lose its inherent resilience over time and accordingly become less effective.
In the preferred form of the invention the apparatus further includes a direction-changing means, for example a pulley, located between the anchoring means and the handle. In this form of the invention, a line is anchored at a high point on a wall or the like and the line extends over a pulley near the base of the wall and then to the handle. An elastic line may be used, but it is preferably that a line of limited flexibility, for example nylon rope, is used with the resistance being provided by a coiled tension spring or the like.
This arrangement provides an even tensin throughout and also permit flexibility in that springs of different resistance may be used for men, women and children for example.
i, A similar effect may be achieved by a further alternative form of the invention in which the resistance means comprises a weight at a low level. the line extending from the weight up over a pulley at a high level and then to the handle. This arrangement may ,require a track or guide for the weight in order to prevent lateral movement thereof.
EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION Embodiments of the invention are described below with reference to the accompanying 1 25 drawings which are all side views.
In Figures 1 and 2 the simplest form of the apparatus according to the invention is illustrated. A loop or inverted U-section 10 is secured to the ground (Figure 1) or near the base of a wall (Figure From this anchor point an elastic round band 12 extends to the base of a handle 14 to which it is swivellably attached at 16. A conventional grip 18 is provided.
In Figures 3 and 4 the preferred form of the invention is illustrated and in this form the anchor point 10 is provided at a high level and a tension spring 20 is provided between the anchor and a non-elastic nylon rope 22 to provide resistance. The rope runs over a pulley 24 to ensure even tension throughout the swing.
Turning now to Figure 5, a Further alternative arrangement is shown in which resistance is provided by a weight 30 suspended on a rope running over a pulley 32 at a high level.
