Description

INVENTOR: P.SKRBIC PRIORITY: 14.MARCH 2000 INVENTION TITLE: PAT.APPL. No: 20851/00 TURN FLASHER INDICATORS Good visibility of turn signals given by turn signal indicator in this era of high density traffic is an imperative. All modern cars and all other road vehicles have at least two pairs,a front pair and a rear pair of amber-colored lamps in variety of designs but all able to give intense amber-light pulses (flashes) noticable even in the glare of sunny days to enable the proper communication and behaviour of drivers and all participants in road or street traffic.Altough those are a standard and are commonly accepted as such,herewith I am giving a novel technical solution that raises its quality to a new level.
DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION: With the help of sketches given in figures of drawings the new technical solution is easily understood. In FIG 1 the typical view of modern car is shown: the front pair 1 Left and 1 Right ie 1L and 1R of turn signal indicator 1L/R is externaly adjuscent to headlights pair 2L/R. Visible are also left and right retrovisor 9L and 9R.The most recent car models but not all have got an auxilliary sidelooking small amber lamps pair lbL/R mounted on sides of respective front mudguards,lamps of which the selected one 1bL or 1bR flashes simultaneously with the main turn signal indicator 1L or 1R as selected. This is the state of the art. All modern car and other road vehicles have them.The modern retrovisor 9L/R itself evolved from Talbot external retrovisor which first introduced it to be fitted on lower rim of a window of both front doors of a car.These modern retrovisors 9L and 9R are actualy little assembly each with the number of parts: the hollow,plastic or metal,body(of specific design) 92, the flexible neck 93 with the base 94 which enables the whole retrovisor assembly to be fastened on proper place onto a front door externaly, the planar mirror 91 inside the main hole 914 of the body 9 ,,looking" backwards of a car mirroring back scene,the ball or hinges 913 ,the actuator 912, and simple mechanism that enables the driver to tilt,turn the said mirror 91 ie to adjust the angles (manualy or to power operate it remotely) of it in order to achieve a good view and proper overview of traffic situation left,right and backward of his car/vehicle in the case that the interior central retrovisor 191 is not effective enough to remove ,,dead angles", the very dangerous regions of invisibility of back scene.
The new technical solution herewith introduces a new additional pair 10L/R of turn signal indicators 10L and 10R unifying them with the de-facto standard retrovisor pair 9L/R ie 9L and 9R respectively, -as shown in Figures 1,2,3,4,5,6,20,21,22,23,24,25 resulting in new combined unit 90L and 90R as an very useful accessory mainly for persons carrying motorcars,and 390L and an very useful accessory mainly for persons carrying motorcars,and 390L and 1 390R as shown in Figures 7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19 mainly for the trucks. The several obvious advantages over the state-of -the-art car and truck and other road vehicles accessories and contraptions for enhancements of visibility,signaling and rearviewing arise: Better visibility of turn signals in the form of amber-light flashes from all direction and senses in vector sense due to enlarged ray radiating surfaces 101L/R and other parts of new contraption providing broader amber-ray fanout, and due to the lifted position of the novel amber flashing lamps as compared to the usual, most frequently found in practice state-of-the-art amber flashing lamps positions,and providing also means for aditional signaling,- what is not possible with conventional lamps,than direct feedback of given signals back to the eyes of driver, and duplication of turn signals when activated by driver which redundancy actualy greately contributes to the safety on roads reducing the chances of simultaneous disfunction of both, the old,conventional,state-of-the-art turn indicators 1,1b,3L/R and the new helping also to the rear turn indicators 3L/R in their function and a special advantage for being a potential place and object for variety of attractive,estheticaly sound new designs of the new unit 90, with its characteristic parts 10,92 and all the rest and its incorporation into car designs itself. Some of the herewith proposed designs are so functionaly expressive that even from distance up to 100 m they unambigously show to which side of own vehicle they belong (due to arrow resembling or repetitive pattern even in the worst road situations preventing so the other drivers,participants in traffic to misjudge the for them distant signaling vehicle,- frequently sarrounded by bunch of other vehicles and luminous objects combined with road windings and uphill,downhill changes contributing actualy to visual confusion, and hence to hit into the darkened vehicle instead to proceed correctly into equaly dark but free space. In that context, some other patterns on herewith proposed designs as special implementation of the invention are very usefull for indication and forewarning of trailers,semitrailers,long vehicles hiding behind the only visible main towing vehicle,and are shown in Figures 7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14.
Those other designs with extended functionality are the specific derivatives of the main invention here described.One such extreme case is shown in Figure 14 of which sketch represents the design with ,,running lights" whereby the linear horizontal array of n amber lamps and electronicaly switched 1-of-n at the time in sequence unambiguously shows,demonstrates the direction of intended turn of vehicle in live and the vertical array demonstrates the actual motion of the vehicle! When the vehicle is at stand the said vertical array's 310v running amber light disapears.
-2- The said new retrovisor-turn indicator hybrid unit 90L and 90R is comprised from the following parts,best seen and understood in Figures 2,3,4 and 20:the base 94,the adjustable flexible or stif neck 94a, the plastic or metalic body 901 of which forward ,,looking" part 92 is partialy or fully transformed into a nest 900 into which the subassembly -of-the-turnsignal-lamp 2000 is embedded.The subassembly-of-the-turnsignal-lamp 2000 is comprised from the following main parts itself:an reflector 200 metalic or plastic with reflective coat properly shaped as shown,socket(s) 201,electric lightbulb(s) 202,wires 220 protruding from hole203,seal204, in straight implementation,but in specific designs as said with functional patterns as shown in Figures 7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14 any of the said parts is or might be in manifold form to suit the array and form pattern; -and in order to achieve allround visibility of light pulses 1800 and more from the radiating source amber lamp 10 but not to obstruct the mirrored view for driver with the rearward radiated light pulses of amber color the new retrovisor-turn-indicator unit 90L,90R has specialised parts:front side ie forward ,,looking" radiating single or multifacetted ,,lense"(actualy it is amber colored light filter in specific shell form) sidelooking,sidepositioned and sideradiating also amberlense 101,opaque isolation strip 102 and top opaque cover strip 102b in some but not all designs,covering backward radiating light channels 105 wich have vertical opaque lightdirecting reflective wall 106,and only one 107 allowing limited intensity of flashes to come back to drivers eyes if he wants and adjust it for lightpulse feedback.
Fig 1 shows the typical arrangement of signaling contraptions 1,1b, on a car and retrovisors 9 in front view, and Fig23,24 complementing Fig 1 show lb and 3 lamps and the said retrovisors 9 in rear view,all as state-of-the-art.
It is so familiar to everybody and it is regulated by law practicaly in all countries of the world.
Fig 2,3 and 4 show a particular novel design of the said novel technical solution left side unit 90L shown,the complementary rightside unit 90R is mirrorsymmetrical) in front,rear and top view.
Fig 5,6 show another particular novel design of the said generic novel unit only 90L shown) in oblique and top view in order to adequately show the main features of the design ,the compactness and ovality of the novel unit and the convex and also oval amber ,,lenses" 10 and in this design separate 101,110 all three smoothly fitting into overal shape of the unit Fig 7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14 show the truck versions of invention 90 the 390 only left side units 390L,and in front view only omitting the support structure usualy rods and a swivel for adjustiments;The rectangles are plastic or metalic bodies 392 -3as seen from front,of the truck novel retrovisors 390 and whereby the patterns inside each rectangle represent the variety of amber colored ,,lenses"310 with added functionality.
Fig 7 shows the novel truck retrovisor-t.f.indicator unit 390 ,the body 392 as said with the two triangular ,,lenses" 310,310. The said two ,,lenses" indicate that the vehicle on the road is composed of two parts,the truck and the trailer.The triangular form of the said ,,lenses"310,310 and the amber flashes those radiate indicate also the intended turn direction,being the arrowhead picture pointing to the left.
Fig 8 ,similarly to discussed Fig 7 shows the novel truck retrovisor-t.f.i.unit 390,the body 392 of it as said, with an amber ,,lense" 310 of special form resembling a bracket: the two triangular ends linked with a strip indicate that the vehicle on road is composed of two dependent parts intimately linked and long what is in reality an semitrailer.The sharp edges of the said triangular ends indicate the intended turn direction.
Fig 9 ,similarly to discussed Fig 7 and 8 shows the novel truck retrovisor-turn flasher indicator 390,the body 392 of it as said,with an vertical array of four amber ,,lenses" 310 indicating an long compound road vehicle and the array of four amber lamps switched electronicaly in sequence realise running light when .the vehicle is in motion and static all four flashing simultaneously when vehicle stops or is at stand but intending to turn. This arrangement enhances collision avoidance helping drivers,traffic participants to anticipate the situation.
Fig 10, similarly to discussed Fig 9, shows the novel truck retrovisor-t.f.indicator unit 390L,the body 392 of it as said,with an vertical slanted array of six amber ,,lenses" 310 which indicate that the vehicle is long and composed and the left inclination of the said array shows clearly both,first the intended turn direction and second with its electronicaly controlled running or static light the status of the vehicle wheter it is at stand or in motion in reality.The difference between stand and motion determining 1m or more clearance and its trend determines the life or death outcome of situation on road,dense traffic crossings.
Fig 11 shows the novel truck or ute retrovisor-t.f.indicator unit 390 the body 392 of it as said, with an huge vertical ellipse convex or planar only amber ,,lense" 310 visible from great distances(lkm) as needed on freeways and in regions with thick fog.
Fig 12 shows the novel truck or ute retrovisor-t.f.indicator unit 390L,the body 392 of it as said, with an vertical array of circular amber lamps embraced by an vertical young moon amber ,,lense" and lamp 310L and this design is an hybride in functionality of the said designes in Fig 9 and Fig 13 shows the novel truck or ute retrovisor-turn flashing indicator unit 390L, the body 392 of it as said,with two oval and an circular amber lamp and lense 310 and this design informs the traffic participants that the vehicle carrying it has at least two parts the last one being an hanging trailer on the -4- Fig 14 shows the novel truck or ute retrovisor-turn flasher indicator unit 390L,the body 392 of it as said,with the two distinctive arrays of amber lamps and its ,,lenses" 310L ,one vertical and second horizontal with the left arowhead the said arrays comprising a cross with the two runnung or static amber lights electronicaly controlled and connected with speedometer/odometer in such a way as to show both the intended turn direction and the motion status of own vehicle, the running amberlights are active when vehicle moves,and when not the lights are static but normaly flashing.
Fig 15 and 16,drawing 3,shows the novel truck or ute retrovisor-turn flasher indicator unit 390L of very distinctive design and advanced technology because its body 392L is an specific oval in 3D with four arms of specific shapes and profiles to achieve low drag and vibration ,the front two ie the top 395f and the bottom 396f being the shorter and the rear two ie the top 395r and the bottom 396r with bases 394t and 394b fixed stiff or swiveled neck 393t and 393b ,the said unit 390L having the huge amber ,,ense" 310L oval and convex as to conform the overal body 392 L shape ,which said body 392L and said four arms 395,396 are fabricated from carbon fiber material or casted from aluminium alloy or moulded from ABS plastics or deep forged or presscutt from metal sheets.
Fig 17,18,19 ,drawing3,show the novel ute and van retrovisor-turn flasher indicator unit 390L also of very distinctive design and advanced technology,with all features of described unit in Fig 15,16 except that it has only single top 395 and bottom 396 arm in wing form.
Fig 20,drawing 4, is downscaled 3.3:1 exploded view of the described novel unit 90 of an straight design and showing lots of details for workshop use,only seal 214 and window coverplate for 105 is ommited.
Fig 21,drawing 5, is a top view of a car geared with new unit 90 L and 90 R with its radiation pattern and clearly showing the angular gain of visibility of 400 to 700 or 22% to 40% (depending on car design compared to state-of-the -art unit 9 L and 9 R.
Fig 22,drawing 5, is a side view of a car geared with the new unit 90L,90R showing the hight gain of 30cm or bold 75% compared to the state -of -the -art units 1L,1R,lbL,1bR and 3L,3R resulting in at least 75% gain in visibility! Figure 23,drawing 6, is a rear view of a car geared with the old 1bL,1bR,3L,3R new units 90L,90R but also with a novel additional stand -alone unit 1400 mountable inside car close or direct onto rear window glass being comprised from main parts,the long hollow plastic body 1492 hosting the reflector 14200 with an array of nests,sockets 14201 and electric light sources ie bulbs or LEDs 14202 radiating rearwards all covered with a long combined amber semicilindrical ,,lense" with midsection 1410M realising running amberlight in chosen direction indicating live the chosen intended car turn sinchronised with pair of flashing amber lamps at the ends 1410L,1410R and an red lamp strip 1431 inserted under said 1410M to show brake activation.
Figure 24,drawing 6, is a rear view of a car geared with the old lbL,1bR,3L,3R and new units 90L,90R but with an additional novel unit 400 which has the same or similar signaling functions like unit 1400 in Fig 23 but it is an intimate part of car's design, fitting into a nest 4900 shown in Fig 26 as assembly plan of said 400, and shown again fitted in said place 4900 in another view, the oblique view in Figure 25 being comprised from the following main parts,the plastic body shaped as shown 492, hosting the reflector 4200 with an array of nests,sockets 4201 and corresponding electric light sources ie bulbs or LEDs 4202 radiating rear -and sidewards all covered with a long combined amber Ushaped shell ,,lense"410 with midsection 410M realising running amberlight in chosen direction indicating live the chosen intended car turn sinchronised with the pair of flashing amber lamps at its ends 410L,410R and the three red lamp strips 431M,431L,431R inserted under said 410M,410L,410R, whereby the said novel unit 400 once assembled gets automaticaly electricaly connected when fitted into the said nest 4900 by mating its set of holes and female electrodes in its body on rear side 4000 with the complementary set of pins as male electrodes 4001 and when once unit 400 fitted it is secured in place with teftproof set of bolts/screws from inside car 406 mating with set of corresponding threaded holes 407 in both car body slot 4900 and the bottom of the body 492 of the unit 400 itself.
Figure 25 is oblique view(birds perspective) of a modern car geared with all three novel sorts of units the said 90L/R,the said 400, and the 500 in frontside of car just under the roof but above-and-behind the upper side,rim of the windscreen where this 500 is obviously the counterpart of the rear unit said 400 with the only difference that the red lamp strips 531 might be ommited depending on the law ruling.
Figure 26 is simplified assembly and fitting plan for the said novel units 400 and 500.
Figure 27 shows the said novel unit 400 in slightly modified form ie with body492 and lens 410 its left and right ends 410,410R extended downwards into the rear roofposts as an design stunt.
Figure 28 shows top view of very modern compact car with amber and red lamps similar to units 400 and 500 in Figures 25, 26,27 but without its midsection 410M ie running amber lights.

Claims (23)

1. The invention TURN FLASHER INDICATORS is a set of new technical solutions,the novel car and other vehicles like trucks,utes,vans accessories or novel components of own design or subjugated to and adhering to overall car's or vehicles design as shown in only samples quantity in Figures to 28 of the seven drawings herewith enclosed, distinguished by both the relocation and the substantial as needed modification od the state-of-the-art and de-facto world standard contraptions for signaling on roads and any place of traffic ie the amber flashing lamps (1,1b,3) as symmetrical pairs left and right L/R units into the equivalent signalling contraptions(90L/R,390L/R,400,500) but with better signaling qualities like with substantial gain in visibility ,hight gain of 40% or even 200% and angular gain of cca 75% over the state-of-the-art contraptions, providing also technical hardware and software means to achieve or promote multifunctionality,than expressivness not only better visibility, than usable redunduncy, and than garantying better protection from harms,disfunctionalities,and accidents being as said relocated, to lesser exposed to damages regions of cars.
2. The car's and other road vehicles component,a new car accessory for more practical and better on road communication turn-signal flasher indicator according to claim 1, shown in figures 2,3,4, 5,6, 15,16, and also 17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24, and 25 and designs in the same figures of the seven drawings, distinguished by unification of de-facto standard side retrovisor (9L S "and 9R) in a modified form (901)(L/R) with the additional and higher rised than state-of-the-art turn signal indicator(1L/R) as a source of electricaly produced and controlled amber light pulses or flashes being radiated 1800 in horizontal plane and about 2000 in vertical plane at each side of vehicle for better visibility,whereby this said unification is accomplished with migration of amber light lamps(1L/R) but in modified form (10L/R) and new suitable variety of shown and not here shown designs to a shown place, a nest (900L/R) within the also modified retrovisors(901 L/R).

The new multifunctional unit according to claims 1,and 2 comprised from turn signal indicator and retrovisor combination distinguished by modification of the de-facto standard retrovisor's (9L/R) plastic or metalic body 9-1 LR) into body of new form(901) in such a way as to create space,produce indent and make nest(900) for tight fitting in a manner male/female complementary surfaces(929 L or 929 R) of complete lamp(2000 L or 2000 R) of new additional turn indicator(10L,10R),whereby the said complemenary pair becomes unified in an integral new design of car/vehicle accessory and of the whole car design itself.

The new additional or sole turn indicator (10L/R) according to claim3, distinguished by being embedded into said proper shaped nest(900L,900R) in the body of modified retrovisor(901) as a complete lamp subassembly(2000L,2000R) The said lamp subassembly (2000L/R),according to the claim 4 distinguished by being comprised of adhering-to-specific-design properly shaped reflector(200),socket(201),electric light bulb(202),lense of various designs(10),seal(204), and wires/cabling (220) ,all in left and right variations.

The lense(10) according to claim 5,distinguished by having specific shape and constitution ie front side surface(10L,10R),side,,looking" and radiating amber light as well part/section(101L,101R), rear,, looking" light channels(105L,105R) with vertical reflective walls(106) for backward directing amber light radiation not obstructing/bluring drivers clear mirror view,all shaped as dictated by particular overall design.

Turn flasher indicators according to claims 1,2,3,4,5,6 distinguished by broader amberlight fan-out due to enlarged and differently shaped ray radiating surfaces(10L,10R,310L,310R,410,510,1410,410L,410R,510L,510R) and due to minimaly 30 cm lifted position as compared to the known state-of-the-art amber flashing lamps.

Turn flasher indicators according to claims 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 distinguished by providing technical means,hardware and software for additional signaling not only conventional turn signaling whereby the said means are arrays and manyfolds of amberlight lamps with ,,lenses"(310,410,510,1410) each of specified form,mainly simple geometric figures, fitting into the main pattern designed for additional signaling and broader informing of all traffic participants even very distant, the said patterns activated to radiate light by switching lamps in arrays by an electronic controller(33) connected to manual or voice control tools accessible by driver only and to speedometer/odometer and brakes switch.

The novel retrovisor-turn indicator hybrid unit 90L and 90R according to claims 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 shown in Figures 2,3,4 and 20 distingushed by being Scomprised from parts:the base 94,the adjustable flexible or stiff neck (93),the plastic or metalic body(901) of which forward ,,looking" part (92) is partialy or fully transformed into a nest(900) into which the subassembly of the turnsignal lamp(2000) is embedded,and the rear part with its main cavity (914) is host to semiencapsulated mirror (91)usualy planar forming the retrovisor part of the S" hybride. The said subassembly 2000 according to claim 9 distinguished by being comprised from main parts itself:an reflector(200) metalic or plastic,with reflective coat ),socket(s)(201),electric lightbulb(s)(202) ,wires (220) protruding from hole(203),seal 204,main forward ,,looking" radiating single or multifaceted,than sidelooking,sidepositioned and sideradiating also amber,,lense"(101),opaque isolation strip (102) and top opaque coverstrip(102b) in some but not all designs,covering backward radiating amberlight channels(105) which have vertical opaque reflective walls(106) and only one(107) allowing limited intensity of amberflashes to come back to drivers eyes if he wants and adjust it for lightpulse feedback.

The novel turnsignal indicator-retrovisor hybrid unit 90L,90R according to claim 9 of another particular novel design shown in Figures 5,6 distinguished by robustness ,compactness and ovality and convex and oval and 101,110 which are in this design separate but all three smoothly fitting into overal oval shape of the motherunit

The novel turn flasher indicator-retrovisor hybride unit 90 according to claim 11 of another set of particular novel designs as said unit's 90 versions for the trucks,the units 390 shown in Figures 7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14 distinguished by near rectangular front contour of body(392) filled with arrays of amberlight lamps(3-2000 with its ,,lenses"(310) forming patterns with added functionality and said lamps with electric lightbulbs or LEDs switched and controlled by an flasher electronic unit(333) linked to other parts of vehicle,the brakes switch,the speedometer/odometer.

The novel turn flasher indicators the hybride units 390 according to claim 12 shown in Figure 7 distinguished by having two triangular ,,lenses"(310),(310) indicating that the vehicle on the road is composed of two parts,the truck and the trailer whereby the said triangular forms of said ,,lenses"(310)(310) and the amberflashes they radiate indicate also the intended turn direction being the arrowhead symbol pointing in that direction.

The novel turn flasher indicators the hybride units 390 according to claim 12 shown in Figure 8 distinguished by its body (392) having an amber,,lense" (310 of spec ial form resembling a bracket of which the two triangular ends linked with the strip indicate that the vehicle on the road is composed of two parts intimately linked and long what is in reality an semitrailer,and the sharp S. edges of said triangular ends indicate flashing the intended turn direction.

The novel turn flasher indicators the hybride units 390 according to claim 12 shown in Figure 9 distinguished by its bodyfront(392) having an vertical array of four amberlight lamps with ,,lenses"(310) indicating an long compounded vehicle whereby the four said amberlamps are switched elec tronicaly in sequence 1-of-4 at the time producing running light when the vehicle is in motion and static when the vehicle is at stand but intending to turn.

The novel turn flasher indicators the hybride units 390 according to claim 12 shown in Figure 10 distinguished by its bodyfront(392) having an verticalslanted array of six amberlamps with its ,,lenses"(310) which indicate that the vehicle is long and composed and the inclination of said array shows both first the intended turn direction with its inclination and second with its electronicaly controlled running or static light the status of the vehicle wheter is it at stand or in motion in reality warning the oncoming drivers /participants in traffic timely about it.

The novel turn flasher indicators the hybride units 390 according to claim 12 shown in Figure 11 for fast trucks,utes,vans distinguished by its bodyfront (392) having an embedded amberlamp( with its huge vertical eliptoidic or planar amber,,lense"(310) as needed for freeways and regions with thick fog.

The novel turn flasher indicators the hybride units 390 according to claim 12 shown in Figure 12 distinguished by its bodyfront(392) having an vertical array of circular amberlamps(310a) embraced by an vertical young moon symbol amberlamp and its,,lense"(310ym) all providing means for said multifunctionality.

The novel turn flasher indicators according to claims 1 ,20,partialy23 embedded as an intimate part of car's design shown in Figures 24,25,26,27 distinguished by the whole its assembly(400) fitting into its nest(4900) and having the main parts :the plastic body shaped as shown(492),hosting the reflector(4200) with an array of nests and sockets(4201) and corresponding light sources ie light bulbs or LEDs(4202) radiatng rearwards and sidewards all covered with a loing combined amber U-shaped shell ,,lense"(410) with its midsection (410M) realising running amberlight in selected direction indicating live the intended car turn sinchronised with the pair of amberamps able to flash at it ends (410L,410L) whereby the said novel unit once assembled and fitted in place said nest(4900) gets automaticaly electricaly connected by mating its set of holes(4000) and femalee let e d by m a t S with th e omplementary semale electrodes inside in its body(400) on its rear side ith the complementary set of pins as male electrodes(400 1 and when once the unit(400) is fitted it is additionaly secured with teftproof set of bolts/screws(406)from inside the car matin itself with the set of corresponding *.60 threaded holes(407) in both car body slot(4900) and the bottom of the body (492) of the unit(400) itself.
