Abstract
A dental implant featuring an intra-bony section and a gingival collar is disclosed. The
gingival collar is designed to contact the surrounding soft tissue and is characterised
by a non-threaded, smooth, frustoconical surface that increases in diameter towards
the proximal end of the implant. A circular groove separates the non-threaded part
from the gingival collar, providing a visible reference point to ensure proper insertion,
thereby preventing damage to the hard cortical bone from over insertion. This groove
also serves as a tissue barrier, reducing the risk of gingival recession. Additionally,
the groove's conspicuous profile in radiographs facilitates long-term monitoring of
bone loss, and it can retain antibiotic gels for treating peri-implantitis. This design
enhances both the functional performance and the longevity of the dental implant.

Description
Dental Implant
Field of the Invention
[0001] The present invention relates generally to dental implants. More specifically, the present invention is a self-drilling and self-advancing ultra-narrow diameter dental implant which allows screw retained dental prosthesis to be fixed onto the present invention.
Background of the Invention
[0002] In recent years, the importance of dental health has been increasingly recognised, leading to a demand for advancements in dentistry. As individuals age or experience medical issues, tooth loss or severe decay can occur, necessitating the use of replacement prosthetics. Dental implants have emerged as a reliable solution for lost teeth. However, the proper placement of these standard dental implants is complex, and improper implantation can result in complications.
[0003] The present invention seeks to provide a dental implant, which will overcome or substantially ameliorate at least some of the deficiencies of the prior art, or to at least provide an alternative.
[0004] It is to be understood that, if any prior art information is referred to herein, such reference does not constitute an admission that the information forms part of the common general knowledge in the art, in Australia or any other country.
Summary of the Disclosure
[0005] The described dental implant embodiment features an intra-bony implant body designed for full insertion into the jawbone, with a distal threaded part and a proximal non-threaded part that is frustoconical and increases in diameter towards the proximal end. A gingival collar, also frustoconical and increasing in diameter towards the proximal end, contacts the soft tissue surrounding the implant. A groove separates the non-threaded part from the gingival collar, providing a visible reference point to ensure proper insertion of the implant, avoiding damage to the hard cortical bone from over insertion, and ensuring an adequate tissue barrier margin for reducing the risk of gingival recession. This groove may also facilitate long-term monitoring of bone loss, as its profile is conspicuous in radiographs. The groove can also retain antibiotic gels for treating future peri-implantitis.
[0006] The implant may include a distally located self-cutting section, a progressive
self-tapping section proximal to the self-cutting section, and a retentive part with
compressive threads following the self-tapping section. Additionally, the non
threaded part may be roughened. The implant also comprises a proximal abutment
which may feature a hexagonal nut containing an interior threaded channel,
surrounded by a frustoconical section and an annular flat surface. The abutment may
be oriented collinearly with the elongate axis defined by the intra-bony implant section
and the gingival collar, or it may be oriented at an obtuse angle between 135 and
1800relative to the elongate axis.
[0007] Other aspects of the invention are also disclosed.
Brief Description of the Drawings
[0008] Notwithstanding any other forms which may fall within the scope of the present
invention, preferred embodiments of the disclosure will now be described, by way of
example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 shows a side view of a dental implant; and
Fig. 2 shows a top perspective view of the dental implant of Fig. 1.
Description of Embodiments
[0009] Figs. 1 and 2 show an embodiment of a dental implant comprising an intra
bony implant section 1, which is meant to be fully inserted in the jawbone, a gingival
collar 2, which is to be placed in contact with the soft tissue surrounding the implant,
and an abutment 3 designed to host the restoration. The implant is surgically inserted
for osseointegration into the jawbone of a patient in order to attach a crown or fixed
tooth prosthesis. The implant is preferred to be solid titanium to provide strong,
permanent support for the crown or tooth prosthetic within the patient's mouth.
[0010] The intra-bony implant section 1 may comprise a self-cutting section 9, which
may occupy a third of a distal section of the implant. The self-cutting section 9 has
threads. The intra-bony implant section 1 may also have a progressive self-tapping section 8, with progressive threads, and a retentive part 7, with compressive threads, in a proximal third of the intra-bony implant section 1. The implant may comprise a micro-threaded section 6 and a passive non-threaded part 5. The passive non threaded part 5 is devoid of threads, frustoconical, and increases in diameter towards a proximal end of the implant.
[0011] The intra-bony implant section 1 is separated from the gingival collar 2. The
gingival collar 2 is configured to contact soft tissue surrounding the implant in use.
The gingival collar 2 is non-threaded, defines a smooth surface, is frustoconical, and
increases in diameter towards the proximal end of the implant. A circular groove 4
separates the non-threaded part 5 and the gingival collar 2. This groove 4 provides a
visible reference point to ensure proper insertion of the implant, thereby avoiding
damage to the hard cortical bone from over insertion and ensuring a proper tissue
barrier margin that reduces the risk of gingival recession. The profile of the groove is
conspicuous in radiographs, facilitating long-term monitoring of bone loss.
Furthermore, the groove can retain antibiotic gels, offering a treatment option for
future peri-implantitis.
[0012] The abutment 3 comprises a hexagonal nut 10, which is flared on top and
surrounded by a frustoconical section 11, in turn surrounded by an annular flat
surface 12, which defines a restorable section of the implant. The abutment 3 includes
a threaded channel 13 for screw retention. The abutment 3 is the portion of the
implant that connects to the abutment of the prosthesis with a fixation screw. The
self-cutting section 9 is distally located opposite the proximally located abutment 3.
Threading of the intra-bony implant section 1 secures it within the jawbone, and the
seamlessly machined smooth surface of the gingival collar 2 is a frustoconical profile
which widens in diameter towards the proximal end of the implant.
[0013] The multi-unit section 3 protrudes from the gum of the patient for the crown or
tooth prosthesis to be attached. The abutment 3, adjacent to the gingival collar 2,
defines the narrow annular flat surface 12, followed by the short frustoconical section
11 and the hexagonal nut 10. A top border of the hexagonal nut 10 is flared and
defines an interior screw retention channel 13. The abutment 3 may be oriented collinearly with respect to an elongate axis defined by the intra-bony implant section
1 and the gingival collar 2, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. However, the abutment 3 may
be oriented at an angle with respect to the elongate axis defined by the intra-bony
implant section 1, preferably defining an obtuse angle between 135 and 180.
[0014] The tapered self-cutting section 9 may comprise cutting and self-advancing
threading designed to bore a pilot hole into the jawbone to displace bone matter for
the implant section 1 to be surgically positioned within the jawbone. The progressive
self-tapping section 8 may have self-tapping threads which allow further advancement
of the implant into the cancellous bone. The progressive self-tapping section 8 may
be followed by the retentive part 7 with compressive threads designed for maximum
retention and stability of the implant in the jawbone. In accordance with some
embodiments, the retentive part 7 is followed by the micro-threaded section 6. The
non-threaded part 5 may have a roughened surface to facilitate osseointegration.
[0015]The foregoing description, for purposes of explanation, used specific
nomenclature to provide a thorough understanding of the invention. However, it will
be apparent to one skilled in the art that specific details are not required in order to
practise the invention. Thus, the foregoing descriptions of specific embodiments of
the invention are presented for purposes of illustration and description. They are not
intended to be exhaustive or to limit the invention to the precise forms disclosed as
obviously many modifications and variations are possible in view of the above
teachings. The embodiments were chosen and described in order to best explain the
