[0053] The invention is directed to an adjustable hinge and an adjustable hinge mount comprising a float nut. In particular, this invention is directed to an adjustable hinge and an adjustable hinge mount comprising a float nut and a float nut housing.
[0054] For purposes of description herein, the terms "upper," "lower," "right," "left," "rear," "front," "vertical," "horizontal," "interior," "exterior," "x-direction," "y-direction,"
and "z-direction" and derivatives thereof shall relate to the invention as oriented in Figures 1 and 1B. However, it is to be understood that the invention may assume various alternative orientations, except where expressly specified to the contrary. It is also to be understood that the specific devices and processes illustrated in the attached drawings and described in the following specification are simply exemplary embodiments of the inventive concepts defined in the appended claims. Hence, specific dimensions and other physical characteristics relating to the embodiments disclosed herein are not to be considered as limiting, unless the claims expressly state otherwise. Additionally, unless otherwise specified, it is to be understood that discussion of a particular feature or component extending in or along a given direction or the like does not mean that the feature or component follows a straight line or axis in such a direction or that it only extends in such direction or on such a plane without other directional components or deviations, unless otherwise specified.
[0055] A Table of Parts is provided in Table 1 above.
[0056] Figure 1A shows one embodiment of an adjustable hinge mount 120 according to the invention in an assembled state. Figure lB shows one embodiment of an adjustable hinge 100 according to the invention which comprises the adjustable hinge mount 120 of Figure 1A with a hinge 100 added on top.
[0057] Figure 2 shows an exploded view of the adjustable hinge mount 120 of Figure 1A enabling visualisation of a fixing plate 130, a float nut housing 140, a float nut 160, a face
plate 170 and a packer 190.
[0058] The crenelated fixing plate 130 is shown to comprise a planar body 132 which houses pocket 136. Advantageously, crenels 134 aid in attachment to the frame 700, when
welding to expose the two surfaces and to act as a jig for location. The crenels 134 are
comprised at the two opposing ends of fixing plate 130 and are formed in the end wall 138
of each of two opposing ends.
[0059] Fixing plate 130 comprises a continuous side wall 139a and a profiled side wall 139b. Pocket 136 is defined in profiled side wall 139b.
[0060] As illustrated in Figure 2, pocket 136 is centrally located in body 132. Although pocket 136 is shown to comprise three walls and thereby one open side, a skilled person is readily able to select other shapes for pocket 136 and other numbers of walls and other numbers of open sides. For example, pocket 136 may comprise two or four walls and for example two open sides or no open side.
[0061] Figure 2 illustrates that float nut housing 140 is dimensioned to be received in pocket 136. While travel of float nut 160 in float nut housing 140 is restricted by raised wall 144, travel is possible, which advantageously confers the adjustability.
[0062] As shown in Figure 2, raised wall 144 is a continuous wall, with raised wall 144 extending from planar body 142. While raised wall 144 is illustrated to be continuous, it is comprised of four separate walls. In other embodiments raised wall 144 comprises any one of: one, two, three distinct raised walls. When two raised walls are adjacent to each other they may abut or there may be a gap between one or more of the raised walls.
[0063] To aid in retention of the float nut 160, the height of the raised walls 144 may be equivalent to a thickness of float nut 160.
[0064] Although not shown, float nut housing 140 may comprise one or more matched apertures 146 disposed to align with the one or more adjusting through holes 168.
[0065] As illustrated in Figure 2, and discussed above, float nut 160 is dimensioned to seat within float nut housing 140 and comprises one or more adjusting through-hole 168.
[0066] Also illustrated in Figure 2, is that float nut 160 comprises serrations 162 on both of a top surface 164, which contacts face plate 170, and a bottom surface 166, which contacts float nut housing 140. Advantageously, serrations 162 aid is holding and securing float nut 160 in position. The thickness of float nut 160 is conferred by side wall 169.
[0067] The two adjusting through holes 168 are illustrated to be aligned with each other in one plane.
[0068] As illustrated, float nut housing 140 and float nut 160 are correspondingly dimensioned to allow travel of float nut 160 within float nut housing 140. In the embodiment shown, travel comprises 3 mm of movement in each of an x-direction and 3 mm of movement in a y-direction. The travel may also be in a diagonal or x-y direction. From the teaching herein, a skilled person is readily able to dimension and proportion hinge 100 and float nut housing 140 and float nut 1060 to confer other amounts of travel such as, I to 10 mm; I to 5 mm; or 1; 2; 3; 4; 5; 6; 7; 8; 9 or 10 mm or travel in one or both of the x- direction and y-direction.
[0069] Figure 2 also shows face plate 170 to comprise a body 172 which houses one or more adjusting holes 174, which are disposed to align with the adjusting through holes.
[0070] As illustrated in Figure 2, face plate body 170 comprises a non-planar profile with an orthogonal flange 176 configured to conform to a frame 700 on which closure 600 (not shown) is to be secured. While the illustrated non-planar profile is illustrated to comprise an opposing orthogonal flange 178 on an opposing side of face plate 170, this is optional. The opposing orthogonal flange 178 is illustrated to extend in an opposite direction to the orthogonal flange 176.
[0071] In the embodiment of adjustable hinge 1100 and adjustable hinge mount 1120 shown in Figures 4A; 4B; 5; 6A; 6B; and 7, face plate body 1170 is planar. Figure 7 is a rear view which shows that face plate 1170 is planar.
[0072] While a packer 190 is illustrated, this component is not absolutely required. Advantageously, packer 190 comprises a body 192 which conveniently allows a cosmetic finish. Body 192 is illustrated to be planar, and to comprise spine 194 with an arm 196 extending at each end of spine 194. While arms 196 are shown to extend in the same orientation, such that packer 190 comprises a c-shape, from the teaching herein a skilled person is readily able to select a suitable shape for packer 190.
[0073] As used herein the term "adjustable" means adjustable in position relative to the support or frame on which the mount or hinge is mounted. The adjustability may be in two directions. The first direction may be in a y-direction, that is an up and down, or height, direction. The second direction may be in an x-direction, that is a side to side, or lateral, direction.
[0074] The adjustability may be in two directions. The adjustability may be in a combination of the two directions. That is, the adjustability comprises two degrees of freedom.
[0075] While the invention is described with reference to a barrel hinge, it is not so limited. From the teaching herein a skilled person is readily able to select a suitable hinge for use with the invention.
[0076] Advantageously, adjustable hinge 100 is shown to comprise fastening apertures 104 in a conventional location, that is the position of the fastening apertures 104 on each leaf 102 is the same as found on conventional hinges.
