Description
[0001] The present application is a divisional patent application of Australian Patent Application No. 2017204313, the contents of which are incorporated herein in their entirety by reference thereto.
[0002] The present invention relates to assemblies to attach a chain to a panel, and more particularly, but not exclusively, to attach the chains of a chain winder to a pivotal mounted and window sash.
[0003] Chain winders are generally attached to a window sill, with the chain then attached to a pivotally mounted window sash, so that upon operation of the chain winder, the sash is moved angularly between and open and closed position.
[0004] Disadvantages of known window winders include difficulty in respect of installation and removal. A further disadvantage is that those difficulties add to the cost of installing the winders.
[0005] It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate at least one of the above disadvantages.
[0006] There is disclosed herein, in combination, a chain and a coupling to attach the chain to a movable panel, the chain including: a plurality of pivotally attached chain links including an end link, the end link being engageable with the coupling to attach the chain to the panel; said coupling including: an engaging part engaged with the end link to attach the end link to the coupling; wherein the end link and coupling provide a clip that is operable to attach the end link with respect to the coupling, wherein the end link is pivotally attached to the next adjacent link for angular movement about a pivot axis, and the engaging part is operable to attach and to release the end link with the coupling, by operation in a direction generally transverse relative to said axis.
[0007] Preferably, the coupling includes a first catch portion, and the end link is fixed to a second catch portion, with the second catch portions being resiliently deformed to engage the first catch portion, with the second catch portions also being resiliently urged to engage the first catch portion.
[0008] Preferably, the second catch portion is moved into engagement with the first catch portion in a predetermined direction, and said chain having a longitudinal direction of extension generally transverse of said predetermined direction.
[0009] Preferably, said predetermined direction being generally parallel to said axis.
[0010] Preferably, said second catch portion includes a catch member, the catch member including a pair of resiliently deformable arms that are resiliently deformed to provide for engagement of the second catch portion with said first catch portion.
[0011] Preferably, the arms are resiliently moved toward each other to provide for engagement of the second catch portion with the first catch portion, with the arms being resiliently urged apart to maintain the second catch portion attached to the first catch portion.
[0012] Preferably, the first catch portion includes a recess into which the second catch portion is moved in said predetermined direction when being moved into engagement with the first catch part.
[0013] Preferably, the recess includes a pair of slots into which the arms are resiliently urged to retain the second catch part secured to the first catch part.
[0014] Preferably, the second catch portion includes at least one engaging member that is attached to the catch member, the engaging member includes a projection that engages the first catch portion and is urged into engagement with the first catch portion upon tensioning of the chain.
[0015] Preferably, the second catch portion includes a second engaging member that engages the first catch portion upon tensioning of the chain.
[0016] Preferably, each engaging member is fixed to the catch member.
[0017] Preferably, each arm is provided with a projection, with a user manipulating the projections to cause resilient deformation of the arms to provide for removal of the second catch portion from engagement with the first catch portion.
[0018] Preferably, the catch member and engaging parts are secured together.
[0019] Preferably, the catch member includes an aperture, and each engaging member one aperture, with the apertures of the catch member and each engaging member being aligned, with a pin located in the aligned apertures to secure the catch member to each engaging member.
[0020] Preferably, the catch member includes a base, with the base having the catch member aperture.
[0021] Preferably, the catch member has a slot within which each engaging member is mounted.
[0022] Preferably, the coupling is a mounting plate, the mounting plate having a pair of flanges through which fasteners pass to secure the mounting plate to the movable panel, with the mounting plate having a central portion located between the flanges, the central portion providing said first catch portion.
[0023] Preferably, the central portion is displaced relative to the flanges so that a cavity is provided between the central portion and the panel, with each projection of each engaging member being located in the cavity.
[0024] Preferably, the clip is also operable to release the end link with respect to the coupling
[0025] Preferred forms of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
[0026] Figure 1 is a schematic top plan view of portion of a window sash, attached to the end link of the chain of a chain window winder;
[0027] Figure 2 is a schematic isometric view of portion of the end link of Figure 1, and a mounting plate that attaches the end link to the sash;
[0028] Figure 3 is a schematic parts exploded isometric view of the portion of Figure 2 and mounting plate;
[0029] Figure 4 is a schematic bottom plan view of the portion and mounting plate of Figure 3; and
[0030] Figure 5 is a schematic top plan view of the portion and mounting plate of Figure 2.
[0031] In the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted the bottom rail 10 of a window sash panel. The panel would be pivotally attached to a window frame so as to be angularly movable about a generally horizontal axis. Attached to the bottom rail 10 is a chain window winder (not depicted) that is operated to move under the chain to cause pivoting movement of the panel.
[0032] The abovementioned chain winder includes a chain 11 that consists of a plurality of links that are pivotally attached for angular movement about pivot axes, the chain including an end link 12.
[0033] The end link 12 includes a pair of link plates 13 attached by pins 14 and 15. The pin 15 attaches the link 12 to the next adjacent link and provides for angular movement between the end link 12 and the next adjacent link. The pin 14 has a longitudinal axis 43, that is parallel to the pivot axis of the pin 15.
[0034] The pin 14 engages a clip 16 that releasably attaches the end link 12 to the rail 10.
[0035] Attached to the rail 10 is a coupling (mounting plate) 17. Typically the coupling 17 would include a body 18 providing a pair of flanges 19 that are generally planar and that are provided with apertures 20 through which fasteners (such as screws) pass to secure the body 18 to the rail 10.
[0036] Extending between the two flanges 19 is a central portion 21 of the body 18 that is displaced from the plane passing through the flanges 19 so as to be spaced from the rail 10. By being spaced from the rail 10, the central portion 21 provides a cavity 22 between the body 18 and the surface 41 of the rail 10.
[0037] The central portion 21 provides an engaging part via which the end link 12 is attached to the coupling 17. The central portion also provides a recess 23 from which there extends a pair of opposing slots 24 providing abutment surfaces 25.
[0038] The central portion 21 also provides a pair of ramp surfaces 26 that converge inwardly of the recess 23 towards the slots 24.
[0039] The catch 16 also includes a pair of chain plates 27, each plate 27 including a flange 28. Each flange 28 is provided with an aperture 29 and an abutment portion 30. Each abutment portion 30 extends laterally beyond its associated flange 28, as well as extending generally perpendicular thereto.
[0040] The catch 16 also includes a catch member 31. The catch member 31 includes a base 32 from which there extends a pair of resiliently deformable catch arms 33. Each arm 33 has at its end extremity a projection 34.
[0041] The base 32 also has a recess 35 and a base flange 36 extending generally parallel to the arms 33 and spaced therefrom by a slot 37.
[0042] Each arm 33 is also provided with a projection 38.
[0043] The arms 33 can be resiliently deformed by engaging and moving the projections 34 towards each other in the direction 39.
[0044] The slots 24 are shaped to receive the projections 38 so that the projections engage surfaces 25. Additionally, the flanges 38 are shaped so as to be received in the recess 23, with the portion 30 extending beyond the recess 23 to engage the surface 40 of the central portion 21.
[0045] When assembled, the flanges 28 are located in the recess 23 and project generally perpendicular away from the body 18. The aperture 35 is aligned with the apertures 29 so that the pin 14 can pass therethrough to attach the clip member 31 to the plates 27.
[0046] Initially, the plates 27 would be attached to the clip member 21 by the pin 14, with the clip member 31 then moved into the slot 23 with the plates 27. The flanges 28 are located in the slot 37. As the clip member 31 enters the slot 23, the projections 38 engage the ramp surfaces 26 to cause resilient deformation of the arms 33 toward each other. This enables the clip member 23 to move into the recess 23 until the projections 38 are aligned with the slots 24 at which time, the projections 38 enter the slots 24 to secure the end link 12 to the coupling 17.
[0047] It should be appreciated the projections 30 are located in the cavity 22 so as to be sandwiched the surface 41 and the surface 40. Accordingly, the chain I Iwhen being extended and retracted, causes the projections 30 to either abut the surface 41 or to abut the surface 40 to move the rail 10. The catch member 33 retains the end link 12 attached to the coupling 17.
[0048] The assembly of the end link 12, plates 27 and catch member 31, and pin 14, are moved in the direction 42 for insertion and removal with respect to the slot 23. The direction 42 is generally parallel to the axis 43 and generally parallel to the direction 44 that is the longitudinal direction of the chain 11, and the direction in which the chain I Iis to cause when causing movement of the sash panel.
[0049] The direction 39 is generally angular about the axis 43, with the direction 34 also being generally transverse of the direction 44 and the direction 42.
[0050] In the above described preferred embodiment, the catch 16 includes a first catch portion provided by the central portion 21 and recess 23 thereof, and a second catch 46 provided by the plates 28 and catch member 31.
[0051] To disconnect the end link 12 from the coupling 17, a user engages the projections 34, to resiliently deform the arms 33 to move the projections 38 towards each other so as to leave the slots 24. The end link 12 can then be moved away from the coupling 17. However it should be appreciated that removal was to be inhibited, then the projections 34 would not be provided.
