Abstract

Anti-drink spiking foils are thin circular metal discs, which although being very pliable are strong enough to be tamper proof. The device fits all sizes of glasses, bottles and other appliances without any adjustment of size, effectively sealing drink vessels and preventing the administration of noxious substances The upper surface can be printed on with any image, brand name or slogan and any interference would clearly show as damage to the product. The lower surface of the device is coated with a food hygiene approved adhesive which will stick to a wide variety of metal, glass, and other items. The device because of its flexibility will stick to uneven or dappled surfaces. Drinks supplied will often be cold & wet and this residue will often be on the outside of the containers. Importantly the adhesive will readily stick to wet, dry and cold surfaces with equal intensity. THERE ARE TWO PAGES OF DESCRIPTION ONLY
Anti-Drink Spiking Foils - Description The present invention relates to a closure device for vessels, such as drinking glasses, bottles, or cans.
The problem of drink spiking, whereby a mind-altering substance is introduced into a person's drink, is becoming increasingly widespread in bars and clubs. Rape, theft and assault are often the motivation for drink spiking.
Drugs such as Flunitrazepam, Ketamine or GHB, which are colourless, odourless and tasteless, are commonly used since they remain undetected when dissolved. Although certain manufacturers have added dyes to aid detection of certain drugs, counterfeit versions are available which do not include the dye. It will be appreciated that alcohol and other substances may also be used to spike drinks.
It is known that plastic lids have been provided, which fit over the top of drinking glasses. The lids are supplied in a range of different sizes to fit different types of glasses. These lids make it more difficult to introduce a substance into the glass since they must first be removed from the glass. However, after a substance has been added to the drink the lid may readily be replaced on the glass without providing an indication that tampering has occurred. As such, the lid provides little or no protection against drink spiking if the glass is left unattended. Furthermore, out gassing of a carbonated or expansive drink may cause the lid to lift partially off the glass.
The present invention, at least in preferred embodiments, sets out to overcome or ameliorate at least some of the problems outlined above.
Viewed from a first aspect, the present invention relates to a fully flexible metallic closure device for any vessel and is not limited to different size containers. This rules out the need for different sizes of the device. The invention comprises of a thin circular metal disc, which although being very pliable is strong enough to be tamper proof. Thus the device will fit all sizes of glasses, bottles and other appliances.
The upper surface can be printed on with any image, brand name or slogan. In it's centre it has a small cross aperture which is initially sealed but is used, once the device is applied, to introduce a straw or other similar item into the beverage below. The cross enables the person to drink their fluid if required but is designed to fit snugly so that no pills or substances can be introduced without damaging the device.
More recently it has been reported that noxious materials have been delivered by syringe both into the human body and into drinks. This would not be the case with this device because any interference would clearly show as damage to the product.
The lower surface of the device is coated with a food hygiene approved adhesive which will stick to a wide variety of metal, glass, and other items. The device because of its flexibility will stick to uneven or dappled surfaces. Obviously, drinks supplied will often be cold &wet and this residue will often be on the outside of the containers. Importantly the adhesive will readily stick to wet, dry and cold surfaces with equal intensity
The method of application is simple. The device is centralised over the vessel making sure that the aperture is in the middle of the container. This is paramount because with small openings in bottles it will allow the introduction of a straw. Once centred the remaining part of the device will overlap the lip of the glass or other such item. Using a hand, the excess is drawn down making contact with the outside of the container, the adhesive adheres thus sealing the article. So effective is this contact the device cannot be removed without splitting, deforming, or otherwise indicating that it has been tampered with thus protecting the user.
Preferably, the aperture allows gas to vent to atmosphere and thereby prevents the build-up of gas in the vessel.
The device may be made of aluminum foil.
The device is suitable for use with a range of different shapes and sizes of vessels. The device is typically used on open vessels, such as drinking glasses, wine glasses and drinks cans, but is not limited to use with vessels of these types.
The device, in use, contacts the sidewalls of the vessel.
Drawings:
Fig. 1 Shows the metal and adhesive in equal thicknesses including the central aperture.
Fig. 2 Shows the device covering a glass container, the sides covering the lip of the glass and sticking down the sides
Fig. 3 Shows the circular nature of the device including central aperture.
