TITLE OF THE INVENTION
A Foldable bed assembly
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention generally relates to the field of foldable furniture, even more particularly, foldable bed assembly that is mounted on a vertical plane which is flexible in work space and easy to install.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
This section is intended to provide information relating to the field and background of the invention and thus any approach/functionality described below should not be assumed to be qualified as prior art merely by its inclusion in this section.
As urbanization has progressed over the years, the price of land in cities have risen and the population in the cities have increased drastically, which has resulted in the construction of many houses and buildings in a narrow area which further has resulted in a narrower living space in the building. Particularly for the people who have moved in to these populated cities the availability of houses or rooms are limited to a small area such as a one-room or an office-style room, thereby causing difficulties in installing furniture such as a bed, a desk, and a closet in a living space.
Among this furniture, beds take up a considerable space, and when installed in a small room, there is not enough space in the room to actually live. Considering these problems, the foldable wall bed which is also known as Murphy bed was introduced to manage the living space in a small room.
A Murphy bed is an impressive, solid piece of furniture that expands into a room about a few feet when pulled open but it is also a space-saving piece of furniture when folded up into a storage position. It can be easily stored out of the way when not in use. The Murphy bed doubles as an attractive piece of furniture and will accent any decor style. The first foldable wall bed was invented as the pivot bed that pivoted on a door jamb of a dressing closet, and then lowered into a sleeping position. Over the years, various improvements have been done and the design has been applied to other furniture like sofas, tables etc.
The most common type of foldable wall mounted furniture like foldable wall beds are so much more than simple platforms that fold down from the wall. Certain designs have integrated shelving, desks, tables, and seating, so the system maximizes space and functionality. From varying sizes to a wide range of styles, wall beds work with any rooms. Just like regular beds, wall beds come in a variety of sizes to fit the needs and available space. The size of the wall beds are chosen after considering the size of the room, no of people using the bed, frequency of usage and the level of comfortableness needed to sleep.
Foldable wall mounted furniture usually come with two orientation options: hinging vertically (from the end) or hinging horizontally (from the side). The setup of the room is the main factor in deciding which orientation is best for implementation. Foldable wall mounted furniture that hinges vertically creates a traditional look when folded down. The wall above the furniture acts as a headboard, especially when the chosen design elements have a framing effect. One consideration with this style of foldable wall mounted furniture is the length up to which it protrudes outwards from the set up, because the short end attaches to the wall, which makes the foldable wall mounted furniture extend out into the middle of the space. In a large room without a lot of other furniture, this isn't an issue. When having a small area with other furniture pieces, space may be tight with the wall mounted furniture fully extended.
Foldable wall mounted furniture hinging horizontally, however, takes advantage of wall space to minimize how far it sticks out into the room. All foldable wall mounted furniture swing up and down easily, regardless of orientation option. The foldable wall mounted furniture use counterweight method to keep the furniture open or closed. They move up and down with little effort whether attached by the end or side.
The foldable wall mounted furniture is incorporated into the rooms in various ways. The seamless integration of the foldable wall mounted furniture into the wall is the most widely used option when the wall mounted furniture is required to blend into the wall without being noticed when it is in a storage position. The wall mounted furniture is made to disappear into the wall for minimal disruption in the existing room design. In the shelving or storage integration, shelve or storage spaces are added to the wall furniture capitalizing on the setup to maximize space. Some designs incorporate shelving around the wall mounted furniture to create a built-in effect when the wall mounted furniture is in open position. This option enables to keep all items on the shelf without removing items when the wall mounted furniture is folded down into position.
In living rooms or other spaces where extra seating is required, wall mounted furniture having a bed with an integrated couch is ideal. The bed typically comes down over the couch when it is converted to resting position. When a wall bed is placed in a dining room, office or common space, the combination of functionality by choosing of a design with a built-in desk or table is highly useful. During the day when the bed is not used the area is used as a work or dining space. During resting time, the bed is pulled down over the desk or table to function as a sleeping area. If the area is used for multiple purposes, wall beds are fitted with a combination of extras like, usage of a wall bed model with a built-in couch with hidden storage incorporated below the couch's seats. A wall bed fitted with a desk is considered for an office style room because it has shelving or built-in storage, which creates a mini office setup.
When the wall mounted furniture are folded up in a storage position the walls are personalized in the exterior for better appearance. Wall covering posters that are printed with an image or pattern, to create an art-like effect when the furniture is in the closed position are used as exterior wall coverings. Some wall mounted furniture includes integrated lighting which eliminates the need for separate lamps in the area while preventing the resting area from being dark. Lighting from above is also used to create a warm glow in the bed area.
The foldable wall furniture preferred mostly because they are economic and pocket friendly which is because of its transition to a resting and reclining option for night, without compromising the free space of the room required for other work during the day time, all at a cheap and affordable price. At times, the foldable wall furniture have proven to be cheaper than the regular ones.
Foldable wall mounted furniture are being used for space-saving purposes and are popular where floor space is limited, such as small houses, apartments, hotels, mobile homes and college dormitories even today. There has been resurgence in popularity of foldable wall mounted furniture in the early 2010s due to the weak economy, with children moving back in with their parents and families choosing to renovate homes rather than purchasing larger one.
There are a number of references to the use of foldable furniture mounted on wall to save the space of a room.
In the patent ES1109056U the invention is a folding bed with a closing device, provided with a folding front attached to a frame and with a container body capable of accommodating it inside the frame, where the frame can rotate with respect to the container body about an axis of rotation, which comprises an anchoring means capable of connecting the frame with the container body and actuation means capable of retaining the folding front in an operation of opening and facilitating the return of the folding front in a closing operation, characterized by the fact that said folding bed also comprises an actuator, one end of the actuator with an articulated joint that can be connected to the frame, so which in use allows a rotational movement with respect to the frame, and the other end of the actuator with a planar articulated joint provided with a hole that is capable of being connected to the means thereof.
But in this invention uses a separate locking system for locking the folding bed during open condition.
In the patent W02019142186A1 the invention is a foldable wall bed/sofa comprising a pivotable bed frame, a foldable sofa frame, a connector for connecting the foldable sofa frame to the bed frame. The sofa retracting mechanism comprises a sofa locking device for keeping the foldable sofa frame folded when rotating the bed frame to vertical/horizontal positions, and a bed retracting mechanism comprising a bed locking device for keeping the bed frame fixed in vertical position. The foldable wall bed/sofa configurable to various positions like the bed frame maintained in a horizontal position with the sofa frame folded and positioned underneath the lower surface of the bed frame; the bed frame maintained in a vertical position where the sofa frame is folded and positioned adjacent, to the lower surface of the bed frame and the bed frame maintained in a vertical position where the sofa frame is unfolded in a horizontal position. But the disadvantage of this system is that this type of furniture is heavy because of its usage as bed and sofa which also requires more effort to change to various positions.
In the patent CN207236520U the invention is a 3D room bedroom wall bed, which is arranged in a wall groove formed by installing a closet on the upper part of the wall and on both sides of the wall. The 3D room bedroom wall bed includes a bed board and a hydraulic tie rod. One end of the hydraulic pull rod is installed in the wall groove, and the other end is fixedly installed on the back of the bed board. The back of the bed board is also provided with folding legs. According to the 3D bedroom wall bed of the utility model, the space occupied by indoor facilities is reduced, the space utilization rate is increased, the space of the user is wide, and the room is clean and comfortable. But the disadvantage of the invention is that the pivot points of the bed are not produced for the opening and closing of the bed.
In the patent US10085567B1 the invention is a wall mounted fold away couch and bed with wall treatment. The wall mounted fold away couch and bed is a wall frame that further contains a bed frame and a seat frame. The bed frame is attached to the wall frame such that the bed frame can be rotated out of the wall frame to allow the use of the bed frame as a bed. The seat frame is attached to the bed frame such that the seat frame is accessible while the bed frame is stored within the wall frame. The seat frame is attached to the bed frame such that the seat frame rotates off of the bed frame allowing seat frame can be used as a chair. The wall mounted fold away couch and bed comprises a wall frame, a bed frame, and a seat frame. But in this invention there are three pivot points and a track with wheel is used for sliding during opening and closing position which has a complex construction which further makes it difficult to be assembled in to a room of a house or building.
In the patent US6401276B1 the invention is a convertible furniture unit which has a base and a bed platform pivotally connected to the base for angular displacement about a first axis from an upright stowed position with respect to the base, to a substantially horizontal use position. The platform has an upper surface in the use position that is adapted to support a mattress, and an opposite surface. A table panel has a first end that is pivotally mounted to the opposite surface of the platform for relative displacement between the platform and the panel about a second axis which is spaced from the first axis so that the panel is in a support position when the platform is in the use position, and the panel is in a working position when the platform is in the stowed position. An extension or foot is pivotally connected to the table panel at a location that is spaced from the first end of the panel, for rotation of the extension or foot between an upper position for propping the panel in its working position, and a lower position. The extension or foot pivots about a third axis which is spaced from the first and second axes and includes a part for supporting the panel in the support position when the extension or foot is in its lower position. But the invention uses the coil tension springs to provide a mechanical assist during lowering and raising the bed platform although there is also a hydraulic damping element which is only optional.
In the patent US20170197537A1 the invention is a Murphy bed assembly which can be stored within a side extension of a motorhome. Side extensions are commonly provided for motorhomes to provide additional interior space for the motorhome. In this invention the extension is fixed to the side of the motorhome and opens to the interior of the motorhome. A Murphy bed assembly is provided to fit within the space provided by the side extension including the bed and the mechanism for actuating the bed from a stored position to a position of use. The mechanism is in the form of hydraulically actuated cylinders which move the bed between the positions so that the requirement of physically moving the bed is eliminated. But the invention uses cam track mechanism to support the hydraulic cylinder for moving the bed from vertical to horizontal position which has a complex assembly which makes it time consuming during installation or maintenance.
In the patent CN1946315A the invention is a foldable furniture structure, specifically, a foldable bed which includes a support with two parallel side plates. The two side plates are set at a distance from each other, are approximately rectangular, and have two bottoms. Corners (one front, one back), two top corners (one front, one back), and an approximately rectangular pivot frame having a rear end portion engaged between the side plates is provided. The upper part is pivoted between two positions, one is an approximately vertical folded position, and the other is an approximately horizontal downward position, wherein it is opened in a forward direction, and it includes: at least one transverse member. The ground is perpendicular to and fixed to the side plate and is intended to contact the floor or a wall, and includes a device for fixing it to the floor or wall; a transverse hinge pin, which is approximately perpendicular to a side plate. The side plate extends and is mounted on the frame, and its end portion is pivoted on the side plate in a region near its front top corner; and a laterally torsion-resistant reinforcing rod. The ground is perpendicular to and connected to the side plate and is located in a region below the hinge pin. But in this invention there are three hydraulic cylinders positioned below the bed frame at two ends and the center to support the lifting and lowering of the bed which causes the usage of a larger storage space below the bed frame.
In the patent US20170007028A1 the invention is a foldout bed having two frames. Two frames are hingeably coupled with each other at a pivot point, by which the two frames are transnational between a coplanar configuration and a non-coplanar configuration. Two frames are also coupled by a counterbalance mechanism, which couples one frame to a lower member of the other frame such that the counterbalance mechanism does not extend beyond a front-most surface of the other frame. The foldout bed also has two panels, each of which couples with one of the two frames, respectively. The distance between two panels forms a gap that is sized and dimensioned to allow the two frames to transition between the coplanar and non-coplanar configuration without encumbrance. The gap is covered by a gap cover. But in this invention the pivot point is provided in a vertical extension from the main frame and also the counterbalance mechanisms are provided below the main frame.
In the patent KR20170099730A the invention is a retractable bed which can be foldably stored in a storage space provided on a wall or a cabinet of a building when not in use, and is rotatably installed in the storage space. A main frame including a plurality of steel frame frames arranged in a longitudinal direction; a plate frame made of a plurality of plate members independently detachably coupled to the main frame; and an operating member for rotating the main frame. The main frame includes a center frame disposed in the longitudinal direction of the bed, a pair of side frames arranged in parallel with the center frame on the right and left sides of the center frame, a plurality of transverse frames connecting the center frame and the side frames, and an engaging frame that connects the side frames to each other and protrudes downward relative to the transverse frame. But in this invention there are hydraulic cylinders positioned below the bed frame at two ends and the center to support the lifting and lowering of the bed which makes the bed more space consuming.
In the patent CN202014836U the invention is a wall cabinet type folding bed which comprises a folding bed and a wall cabinet provided with bed legs and a bed board, and the bed board is hinged to two side walls of the wall cabinet. It also includes a folding computer table provided with a driving rod and a foldable support. A first end of the driving rod is hinged to the bedboard, and a second end of the driving rod is hinged to the foldable support. When the folding bed is unfolded, the wall-mounted folding bed provided by the utility model has its folding computer desk folded under the bedboard of the folding bed; and when the folding bed is folded, its folding computer desk is unfolded. Therefore this wall-mounted folding bed is unfolded alternately with a folding bed and a folding computer desk, which greatly improves the utilization rate of the indoor space. But this invention has a complex construction and it cannot be easily installed in to a house or building as the installation is time consuming.
In the patent US5978988A the invention is a folding furniture apparatus for selectively and alternatively moving between a substantially horizontal usable position and substantially vertical storage position. The apparatus generally comprises a support assembly, a furniture component, and a counter balancing mechanism. The furniture component is pivotally connected about a pivot axis to the support assembly for movement between a usable position and a storage positions. The counterbalancing system creates one of a selected value of torques about the pivot point and biases the component to the vertical position. In this invention various holes are provided in the bracket for mounting the counter balancing mechanism based on the torque limits that are required for supporting the lifting and opening of the bed, but if the weight is exceeded more than the limit the torque must be changed again to compatible levels to avoid any damage.
There are a few drawbacks but they are not limited to compromising on the comfort quotient of foldable wall furniture because wire mesh is used instead of box springs which is generally used in regular furniture for cushioning effect. In comparison to the regular beds certain foldable wall mounted furniture may not be as sturdy as well. Also folding a big piece of furniture everyday can be a daunting task for some people. Since there is a limitation of space, the furniture has to be folded every time the space is needed for other work purposes which may become a tedious task to some people over time, such as older citizens.
Also most of the foldable wall mounted furniture that are seen in the prior arts have complex construction which makes painstaking and time consuming during the installation or dismantling of the parts of the foldable wall mounted furniture in a house or building.
Hence, there is a need to manufacture foldable wall mounted furniture which is sturdy, can be easily assembled in any house or building and easily foldable to a closed position and pulled down to an open position with minimum effort.

After observing all above problems in the prior art, the idea of constructing a foldable bed assembly that can be easily installed or dismantled is disclosed in the present invention detailed description which also has various mounting points for different sizes of cushion which makes it very compatible in comparison to the conventional foldable bed assemblies.
The FIGS. 1-4, illustrate the foldable bed assembly in an open position and the FIGS. 5-8 illustrate the foldable bed assembly in a closed position. The foldable bed assembly is mounted on a vertical plane which is rotatable about a point, between a horizontal usable position and a vertical storage position. The foldable bed assembly can be used when it is pulled down to a horizontal open position. The foldable bed assembly comprises a base frame (1) which holds a cushion (not shown in figs) on which the users can recline. There is a bracket (2) attached to the sides of a vertical planar structure (not shown in figs) on which the foldable bed assembly is installed and the bracket (2) is parallel to the base frame (1) and placed apart from the base frame (1) at a particular distance. The base frame (1) has a rotating shaft (11) extending transversely outwards, towards the bracket (2). The bracket (2) has a U-shaped support (21) for positioning the rotating shaft (11). The rotating shaft (11) is seated in the U-shaped support (21) and the rotating shaft (11) is rotatable in the seated position. The base frame (1) is rotatable between a horizontal open position and a vertical closed position with the rotating shaft (11) as the pivot axis.
The rotating shaft (11) is attached to the base frame (1) by a support plate (12). The support plate (12) is provided to strengthen the rotating shaft (11) to withstand heavy load of the bed assembly during opening and closing operation. A hydraulic mounting frame (13) is provided which extends perpendicularly upwards from the base frame (1) and is attached to the base frame (1). The hydraulic mounting frame (13) is made of material that is capable of withstanding compressive and tensile forces which is not susceptible to deformation or damage. A balancer (14) is provided which extends transversely inwards from the hydraulic mounting frame (13), which prevents the deformation of the base frame (1) due to overload.
Two hydraulic cylinders (3, 4) are provided as counter balance mechanism for opening and closing of the foldable bed assembly which provides smooth operation. Also the opening and closing operation can be done with minimum effort because the two hydraulic cylinders (3, 4) provide counter balancing force to dampen the movement of the foldable bed assembly. The two hydraulic cylinders (3, 4) are fixed to the side of the planar surface by two cylinder support structures (5A, 5B) respectively. The two cylinder support structures (5A, 5B) are positioned above the bracket (2) in the planar structure and the clamps (51A, 51B) are attached to the two cylinder support structures (5A, 5B). A first mounting structure (31A, 41A) is on top of each of the cylinders (3, 4) and the first mounting structure (31A, 41A) connect the cylinders (3, 4) to the clamp (51A, 51B) by he fastener (32A, 42B) respectively. The fastener (32A, 42A) are fixed in the clamp (51A, 51B) so that the first mounting structure (31A, 41A) swivels about the axis of the fastener (32A, 42A) during the opening and closing operations.
The second mounting structure (31B, 41B) connects the ends of the piston (3A, 4A) to the hydraulic mounting frame (13). The hydraulic mounting frame (13) is fitted with another set of fastener (32B, 42B) for connecting with the second mounting structure (31B, 41B). Similar to the first mounting structure (31A, 41A), the second mounting structure (31B, 41B) also swivels about the axis of the fasteners (32B, 42B) during the opening and the closing operations. The mounting points of the fasteners (32A, 42A) in the clamps (51A, 51B) can be altered in the cylinder support structures (5A, 5B) depending upon the size and weight of the bed. Also, the mounting points of the fasteners (32B, 42B) in the hydraulic mounting frame (13) can be changed depending upon the size and weight of the bed. There are plurality of holes (not shown in figs) provided in the hydraulic mounting frame (13) to change the positions of the fasteners (32B, 42B). The plurality of holes is located at predetermined distances that are dimensioned to compensate the load and safety factor for the opening and closing operation. This arrangement of changing mounting points eliminates the usage of different size furniture assembly for different size and weight of the cushion.
During the opening operation of the foldable bed assembly, the piston (3A, 4A) are retracted inwards to dampen the movement of the foldable bed assembly from a vertical position to a horizontal position and during the closing operation, the pistons (3A, 4A) are extended which also dampens the movement of the assembly from a horizontal position to a vertical position. Based on the stroke length of the piston (3A, 4A), the hydraulic cylinders (3, 4) are mounted in the different mounting positions respectively. In the open position, the hydraulic cylinders (3, 4) are straight and the pistons (3A, 4A) are fully retracted into the cylinders (3, 4) which eliminates the need for locking the assembly to maintain the open position.
In certain prior arts only single cylinder arrangements are provided which may not be suited for larger bed sizes and heavier cushion because more effort is required for the opening and closing operation as there is lesser counter balancing force. So the usage of two hydraulic cylinders (3, 4) on both sides of the base frame (1) is highly safe and it makes the opening and closing operation effortless. The two hydraulic cylinders (3, 4) used may be of same capacity or can be of different capacities depending upon the requirement of counter balancing force to dampen the opening and closing operation.
