An Activation System and Method of Using Same
[0001] The present invention generally relates to an activation system and method for activating a product/system. In particular the present invention provides an activation system and method which enables the activation of a product/system once certain information is provided thereto. The present invention provides an activation system and method which enables the activation of a product/system once certain information is provided thereto, wherein that information can be used to generate an incentive.
[0002] There are various incentive schemes and programs which encourage the purchase of a particular product/system on the basis that a portion of the cost of the product is returned to the purchaser or supplier. One such scheme is the small-scale technology certificates offered by the Australia Government's Clean Energy Regulator. Through this scheme the Regulator seeks to encourage the purchase of eligible small scale renewable energy systems.
[0003] As with other similar schemes, to participate in this scheme information relevant to the energy system needs to be submitted with the Regulator. Upon receipt of the required information the Regulator issues an incentive in the form of a small scale technology certificate. These certificates act as a form of currency and can be traded to offset the cost of the energy system.
[0004] With these type of schemes, a supplier of the energy system is able to offer their energy system at a lower cost on the basis that they will receive an incentive/reimbursement through the technology certificate. This energy system then becomes more attractive to a purchaser compared to a competing energy system which is ineligible under the scheme.
[0005] The success of these type of schemes is dependent on the submission of the required information. Without this information the technology certificate is not issued and the incentive is missed. Unless a supplier/installer can guarantee they will receive the incentive, the supplier/installer is unlikely to promote the eligible product/system at a reduced cost.
[0006] A number of these energy systems, such as heat pump water systems, are installed by plumbers, often as a replacement to a water system that is no longer working. As hot water systems breakdown/fail unexpectedly the home owner wants a replacement as quick as possible and will be guided by cost as well as the plumber's recommendation. Typically the plumber will not wish to bother with completing the necessary requirements to obtain the incentive/technology certificate and therefore does not offers the eligible energy system at a reduced cost, foregoing the value of the incentive/technology certificate. Unless the cost of the eligible energy system is lower than a competing system, it is unlikely that the homeowner will select the eligible energy system, instead seeking to replace their old system with the same or similar energy system.
[0007] As the installer of an energy system is usually independent to the supplier/wholesaler of the energy system it can be difficult to have an installer encourage the installation of the supplier's eligible energy system when there are other non-eligible cost effective systems to choose from.
[0008] The preceding discussion of the background art is intended to facilitate an understanding of the present invention only. The discussion is not an acknowledgement or admission that any of the material referred to is or was part of the common general knowledge as at the priority date of the application.
[0009] It is an object of this invention to provide an activation system which ameliorates, mitigates or overcomes, at least one disadvantage of the prior art, or which will at least provide the public with a practical choice.
[0010]While this disclosure discusses the issue of certificates for eligible energy systems, the scope of this specification covers any scheme/program/system where an incentive is provided for the purchase of eligible products/systems, wherein the incentive is only issued after the submission of certain information to the body providing the incentive.
[0011] The present invention provides an activation system comprising:
a heat pump which is set in a locked condition after it is factory tested, whereupon installation the heat pump displays a unique code; and
a mobile application;
whereupon input of the unique code and heat pump specific information into the mobile application, the mobile application displays an activation code;
whereupon entering the activation code into the heat pump, the heat pump is unlocked.
[0012] The present invention provides an activation system which collects the required information relevant to the product/system for the issue of a technology certificate, rebate or similar prior to the product/system being available to operate.
[0013] The present invention provides an activation system for the activation of an energy system, whereupon entering the required information into an input means, the activation system provides an activation code, whereupon entering the activation code into the energy system the energy system moves from a locked condition to an unlocked condition.
[0014] Preferably once the activation code is entered the energy system remains permanently in the unlocked condition.
[0015] The input means may be in the form of a program. The program may be a mobile application.
[0016] Preferably the energy system is in a locked condition when installed and turned on.
[0017] The energy system may display a unique code once installed and turned on.
[0018] The unique code may be entered into the mobile application whereupon the mobile application prompts an installer for system specific information.
[0019] Preferably the activation code is generated and displayed in the mobile application once the system specific information is entered.
[0020] The system specific information may include that required to satisfy the requirements for the issue of an incentive. The incentive may be in the form of a certificate, rebate or similar.
[0021] The mobile application may communicate directly with the body providing the incentive. Once received the body may issue the incentive.
[0022] In contrast to the prior art, the activation system of the present invention requires the collection of information required for the issue of the incentive before the energy system can function. As the issue of the incentive is guaranteed, the supplier is able to offer their eligible energy system at a lower cost, thereby providing a cost advantage over other competing, non-eligible products.
[0023] The present invention provides a method for activating an energy system; the method comprises:

[0034] The product/system may be a heat pump.
[0035] Further features of the present invention are more fully described in the following description of a non-limiting embodiment thereof. This description is included solely for the purposes of exemplifying the present invention. It should not be understood as a restriction on the broad summary, disclosure or description of the invention as set out above. The description will be made with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an image of a display on a heat pump;
Figure 2 to 6 provide partial images of a sequence of screenshots of a mobile application in which heat pump specific information can be entered.
[0036] In the figures like features are referred to by like numerals throughout the several views. The figures shown are not necessarily to scale, with emphasis instead generally being placed upon illustrating the principles of the present invention.
[0037] Referring to the figures , the invention according to a first embodiment is in the form of an activation system for activating an energy system, which, in this embodiment, is in the form of a heat pump.
[0038] An objective of this embodiment is to ensure system specific information is collected before the heat pump is able to operate. This system specific information is required to collect an incentive. Currently there is no requirement to collect the system specific information before the heat pump can be activated, resulting in the installer/supplier missing out on valuable incentives. Be ensuring the system specific information is collected the incentive can be collected.
[0039] The present embodiment provides an activation system which disables or locks the heat pump until such time as an activation code is inputted into the heat pump. This activation code is only generated after certain information is supplied to an input means, which in this embodiment is in the form of a mobile application.
[0040] Prior to leaving the factory, and once it has been tested, the heat pump is locked and will remain in this state until the activation code is entered.
[0041] Upon installation of the heat pump, the heat pump is turned on. A display 11 of the heat pump will display a unique code. The installer can then go to the manufacturers mobile application and enter this unique code. Upon validating the unique code the mobile application will prompt the installer to input specific information associated with the heat pump.
[0042]As depicted in figure 2 the heat pump specific information includes scanning, or otherwise inputting the bar code on the heat pumps label. This bar code includes information specific to that heat pump including its serial number.
[0043] As depicted in figure 3, the heat pump specific information includes submitting a photo of the product installed on site.
[0044] As depicted in figure 4, the heat pump specific information includes the site address of the installation.
[0045] As depicted in figure 5, the heat pump specific information includes submitting the unique code which is displayed on the display 11 of the heat pump upon turning on. As also shown in this figure, the activation system can outline the relevant conditions associated with the incentive program which the installer needs to agree. This may be completed by signing or otherwise acknowledging acceptance of the conditions.
[0046] Once the heat pump specific information is submitted, the mobile application generates an activation code. The activation code can then be entered into the display 11 of the heat pump. The heat pump is then unlocked and available for operation.
[0047] Once the heat pump specific information has been submitted to the regulatory body, the serial number of the heat pump is logged. This ensures multiple incentives cannot be generated from the same installation. Should the same serial number be input into the mobile application more than once, the installer will be advised that the serial number is invalid.
[0048] The heat pump specific information collected by the mobile application can now be used to generate the incentive.
[0049] The order upon which the system specific information is entered is irrelevant to the scope of this invention. The critical factor is that the mobile application does not provide the activation code until all the required information is validly entered. The nature of the required information will be defined by what information is required in order to secure the incentive.
[0050] Modifications and variations such as would be apparent to the skilled addressee are considered to fall within the scope of the present invention.
