Abstract
U-SHAPED INTRAORAL SCANNER
ABSTRACT
Intra oral mapping technology is one of the innovative & most advancing areas in dentistry. Since
the introduction of three-dimensional scanning techniques like digital scanner, its uses have been
expanding comprehensively along with the ever-increasing improvement in preciseness and user
friendliness with time. Our invention is to develop an intraoral scanner which has a U-shaped
platform for the purpose of deriving intraoral data of a dental patient in a single exposure. With
the incorporation of this kind of digital systems in the dental office, this can lead to a digital
revolution in the field of dentistry. This hard tissue scanner unlike other scanners will have an
intraoral scanner, but a U-shaped, confirming to the maxillary alveolar ridge and associated hard
tissues. It eliminates the need for taking impressions and also the cast fabrication steps with an
added advantage of allowing us single step scanning of the entire area. It can also be equally
beneficial in scanning the mandibular arch if necessary.

Description
Field of Application
Dentistry/Craniofacial orthodontics/ Electronics
Objective
To design an intraoral scanner suitable for dental patients which can retrieve the intraoral data at a single exposure for the purpose of Computer Aided Designing (CAD) of an appliance.
Background
Intra oral mapping technology is one of the innovative & most advancing areas in dentistry. Since the introduction of three-dimensional scanning techniques like digital scanner in early 1980's, its uses have been expanding comprehensively along with the ever-increasing improvement in preciseness and user friendliness with time. Our invention is to develop an intraoral scanner which has a U-shaped platform for the purpose of deriving intraoral data of a dental patient in a single exposure. With the incorporation of this kind of digital systems in the dental office, this can lead to a digital revolution in the field of dentistry.
Summary
The invention relates to a branch of "craniofacial dentistry". This invention/device is termed as "U-shaped intraoral scanner which promises the dentist to reduce the chair side time invested in various dental procedures.
This hard tissue scanner unlike other scanners will have an intraoral scanner, but a U-shaped, confirming to the maxillary alveolar ridge and associated hard tissues. It eliminates the need for taking impressions and also the cast fabrication steps with an added advantage of allowing us single step scanning of the entire area. It can also be equally beneficial in scanning the mandibular arch if necessary.

This unique scanning device will fairly decrease the unnecessary burden on the patient as well as on the clinician because of impression making procedures.
In a single shot, dentist can record all intra oral data.
Description
Digital intraoral scanners are considered class I medical electrical devices, designed and constructed in accordance with the standards of ANSI/IEC 60601-1.
Every scanner has three major components:
1. A wireless mobile work station to support data entry 2. A computer monitors to enter prescription approve scans review digital files 3. A handled camera with U-shaped sensor to collect the scan data in the patient's mouth
This intraoral scanner is designed to have u-shaped scanner with an extra-oral extension to the philtrum area which can be an indispensable tool for a dentist to collect clinical data from nasomaxillary complex as well as mandible.
Design
The U-shaped intraoral scanner mainly comprises of 2 parts: Part A- the detachable sensor heads for image capturing and Part B- the fixed component as a medium for data transfer from the detachable sensor heads to an operating system.
Part A comprises of 2 types of trays in various sizes which can be attached as per the patient's intra-oral requirement. The upper tray (Sp. 1) will be available in sizes such as: U0, Ul, U2, U3, U4, with a maximum width of 5.5cms to 8.5cms and maximum length of 10cms to 14.5cms. Similarly, the lower tray (Sp. 2) will be available in sizes such as: LO, L, L2, L3, L4, with an average width of 2.2cms, maximum length of 10.5cms to 15.5cms buccally and 5.5cms to 8.5cms lingually. The detachable heads has also got an in-build light source (Sp.3) providing illumination for image capturing procedure. The attachment end of the detachable trays comprises of conductor strips (Sp. 4) for providing power to the light source as an output and simultaneously capturing image data from the sensors as an input.

Part B is a fixed component that helps in handling (Sp. 7) and data transfer from the detachable sensor heads to an operating system. On the top, a slot (Sp. 5) is provided so as to attach the detachable tray to the fixed component which will work as a handle and a medium for data transfer as well. This will help in maintaining the sterilization protocol of an entire apparatus. A trigger button (Sp. 6) is provided on the top of the handle for commanding the device for the initiation or termination of the image capturing. Towards the end of the fixed component, there lies the flexible cord (Sp. 8) for data transfer from the device to an operating system to be used by a clinician.
