Description

Abstract
A motorcyclist and bicyclist frangible pole assembly that comprises of a human frangible sacrificial collar of which is inserted into two parts of a pole. The collar is inserted into a pole and one part of the pole is secured to the ground to hold the pole in place.
Description
.0 Technical Field The invention described within this document relates to a motorcyclist and bicyclist frangible pole that can be used on the road and roadside.
.5 Background Art
Most poles located on highways and roadways are designed to be frangible when impacted by a vehicle but not when impacted by a human such as motorcyclists and cyclists. When impacted by a human, serious or fatal injuries often occur. .0 For this reason, a motorcyclist and bicyclist frangible pole is needed which contains a sacrificial frangible component which will break away or shatter when the pole is impacted by a human to considerably lower the risk of injury or harm to the human.
.5 The cost of developing a motorcyclist and bicyclist frangible pole and replacing all existing poles with such a device would be significant. There would be an advantage in creating a frangible sacrificial component of a pole which can be fitted to existing poles thus creating a cost-effective method of changing existing non-human frangible poles or vehicle frangible poles to human frangible poles.
Further, there would be time and cost benefits to being able to easily replace the frangible component of the pole without having to replace the pole in its entirety when impacted and shattered.
The motorcyclist and bicyclist frangible pole will also be required to withstand forces that is applied to it directly as well as forces including, but not limited to, wind forces applied the pole and its attached signage.
Summary of Innovation
The invention described in this document relates to a motorcyclist and bicyclist frangible pole which addresses a number of the above-mentioned disadvantages of existing poles and frangible poles.
With those disadvantages in mind, the invention described in this document is that of a frangible pole assembly comprising of a collar (5, 9) that can be inserted into a pole. The pole is cut into two parts and the collar is then inserted into the pole. The collar assembly is the motorcyclist and bicyclist frangible component of the pole and is the sacrificial component when impacted by a human or vehicle. i0 The collar itself is comprised of two parts. Each part of the collar is secured to a section of the pole by mechanical means such as a bolt, pin, clip, clamp or a similar device (2, 11). The two parts of the motorcyclist and bicyclist frangible pole are then secured to each other by mechanical means such as a bolt, clip, pin, clamp, or a similar device or devices (8). i5 The motorcyclist and bicyclist frangible pole is cylindrical with flanged plates (6, 7). However, the collar (5, 9) and flanges (6, 7) can also take on other configurations such as slightly oval, rectangular, square or other irregular shapes.
i0 If the collar (5, 9) is a cylinder, it may be anywhere between 30-400 millimetres in diameter and 50-400 millimetres in length. The flange plates can be anywhere between 40-500 millimetres in diameter and 5-100 millimetres in length.
The wall thickness of the collar (5, 9) will vary depending on the diameter and length of the i5 collar as well as the forces that it is required to withstand. However, it is estimated that that the thickness of the collar (5, 9) will be between 5 mm and 100 mm and that of the plate between 20 mm and 200 mm.
The collar (5, 9) may be hollow to reduce weight and to allow for a mechanical fastener or '0 fasteners (4) to be inserted in the centre of the collar. This centrally located fastener (4) is to secure the two parts of the collar to each other in addition to that or instead of flange fasteners (8).
The flanges (6, 7) may have a series of indentations or other similar features so that fastener '5 clips, clamps or similar devices (8) can be secured to the flanges thus holding the two collar and flange assembly (5 & 6; 7 & 9) together either on their own or in conjunction with another mechanical device or devices.
A variation to the aforementioned flange (6, 7) is the addition of a cutting edge or cutting mechanism which will cut the frangible bolt (4).
The fastener or fasteners securing the flanges (8) together can be that of a C-,U-, J-, or other similar shape in profile which will allow the fastener to secure the two flanges to each other. The flange fasteners are estimated to be 3 to 15 millimetre thick and 3 to 30 millimetre in width. The length will vary depending on the diameter of the flange. Nominally, the length will be 20 mm to 200 mm in length.
The collar and flange assembly will be manufactured from material suitable for such application such as polymers but can include metals, metal alloys, or composite materials.
The fasteners (8) are required to be sufficiently strong to hold the two collars together via the flanges but will release the collars when impacted by a load such as a human or vehicle.
The mechanical fastener located in the centre of the collar (4) is made out of polymer and is the part in the assembly that will shear, shatter, or break when impacted by a human or vehicle. The material suitable for such application are polymers but can include metals, metal alloys and composite materials.
The bolt, pin or other mechanical devices (2, 11) used to secure the collar to the pole will be made of metal but can be made out of polymers, metal alloys, or composite materials.
The mechanical fasteners positioned on the flanges (8) will release the two flange and collar assembly when the pole is impacted by a motorcyclist, bicyclist, or vehicle thus allowing the )5 mechanical fastener located in the centre of the assembly to shear.
The motorcyclist and bicyclist frangible pole is prevented from rotating within the pole about the axial direction by means of the fasteners (8) that engage with the flanges' indentations. .0 The flanges (6, 7) also provide bending moment resistant about the transverse axis of the human frangible pole. This resistance is in addition to that provide by the centrally positioned mechanical fastener (4) and fasteners that engage with the flanges (8).
.5 The centrally positioned mechanical fastener (4) is able to withstand shearing forces up to the point where it is designed to shear.
The afore described assembly can withstand forces such as that from the wind acting on the pole, assembly, sign or other pole attachments. .0

  1. o Claims 1. A motorcyclist and bicyclist frangible pole assembly, the assembly comprising of two collars each with a body and a flange, the body can be secured to a pole via mechanical means such as that of a bolt. The flanges are secured to each other via a mechanical fastener which ensures the pole will shear upon human impact.
  2. 2. A frangible pole assembly as claimed in claim 1 wherein the collar can be installed onto an existing or newly installed pole stub with a diameter less than the internal diameter of the collar.
  3. 3. A frangible pole assembly as claimed in either one of the preceding claims wherein the assembly includes a frangible bolt that will be sacrificed upon human impact.
  4. 4. A frangible pole assembly as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 where in the frangible bolt is sheared by a cutting mechanism as included in the flange upon human impact on the pole.
  5. 5. A frangible pole assembly as claimed in any one of the proceeding claims wherein the flanges are secured by mechanical fasteners to ensure the stability of the pole and allow for release of the flanges only upon impact.
