DESCRIPTION
[0001] Disclosed herein is a method for constructing a lithophane lamp which can be varied in size by the use of removable modular rings, called picture rings. The picture rings are connected together as one tall lamp or multiple size lamps. The lamp also comprises of an intermediary platform which is used to provide illumination throughout taller lithophane lamps.
[0002] A lithophane is an etched or moulded artwork in very thin translucent porcelain which can be seen clearly only when back lit with a light source. A lithophane presents a three dimensional image. The images change characteristics depending on the light source behind them. Originally lithophanes were made as part of a piece of porcelain, usually at the base of a mug. The person would view the image when the mug was empty. The wax was carved to create thin and thick areas that would represent light and dark areas.
[0003] In recent times, lithophanes have been made with the use of CNC machines and 3D printing, initially using shades of a black and white photograph. The lithopane is carved from a sheet of translucent material. The carving creates the light and dark areas due to the variations in thickness. When the material is carved, an image can be formed that is visible when lighted from behind. A Lithopone must be illuminated from behind to reveal the image. Illumination may be provided by an incandescent or fluorescent.
[0004] The Lithopane can be used mounted or unmounted. There are a number of mounting methods, including mounted in a box with back lighting, inserted into a frame or in the base of a lamp. Currently, there are no lithophane lamps that enable a user to vary the height of a lamp and at the same time, maintain illumination throughout taller sized lamps.
[0005] The present invention is a lithophane lamp that contains removable modular components called picture rings connected together. The rings are joined together as one tall lamp or can be made into multiple size lamps. The lamp uses either magnetic or self adhesive battery powered light sources, providing consistent illumination throughout the lamp. There is an intermediary platform providing a way to illuminate taller lamps. Intermediary Platforms can easily be removed and installed. The lamp can use diffusers throughout the lamp.
[0006] The picture rings give the lithophane lamp a unique ability that makes them very different to existing lamps, in that they connect to each other without an external frame, additional fittings or adhesive. This feature allows the user to easily add picture rings to their lamp and reconfigure it as desired.
[0007] The lamp can be used to display photos of a chronology of the life of a person or pet or a special event. The lamp allows a user to display aspects of their life which are important to them. There are of course many other uses for this lamp. The design that is visible on the exterior of the picture ring is printed with a 3D printer. The modular unit allows the user to extend the height of the lamp based on their individual requirements.
[0008] Each lamp consists of:
1. A base to house the light source and provide a place for a picture ring to sit;
2. Picture rings which display pictures arranged in a ring;
3. A cap, to keep light in, protect eyes from bright light and house a light source;
4. Intermediary platform to house additional light sources for taller lamps as required;
5. Light diffusers if required.

Claims (3)

1. What is claimed is a method for:
(a) creating lithophane lamps of different heights and sizes, using modular components which can be to connected to each other without an external frame, additional fittings or adhesive; and
(b) providing illumination in lithophane lamps which have been extended by the user using the method in claim 1(a) by adding an intermediary platform. This platform can easily be removed and installed by the user.
2. The lithophane lamps of different heights and sizes as defined in claim 1(a) above, comprises of:
(a) picture rings (see FIG. 1 and 2) with edges around the diameter allows other rings to stack securely on top of another ring, thereby allowing the user to increase the height of the lamp;
(b) lamp base (see FIG. 5) which holds either a magnetic or self adhesive light source, a light diffuser and a picture ring (see FIG. 8). If using a light diffuser, the diffuser would sit in the lamp base and another diffuser would be positioned on the lamp cap. Notches in the lamp base allow the user to know where to align magnetic lights with the metal plate; and
(c) a cap (see FIG. 3) which maintains the light in the lamp, reflecting the light back down and can also hold a magnetic or self adhesive light source.
3. The lithophane lamp providing illumination in taller lamps as set out and described in claim 1(b) above, comprises of an Intermediary platform to house additional light sources. The Intermediary Platform (see FIG. 6):
(a) Consists of a rectangular cavity which holds a metal plate to provide a surface for magnetic puck lights both above and below the platform;
(b) Is placed between picture rings to maximise illumination of taller lamps; and
(c) Can be easily removed and installed by the user.
The lugged intermediary platform (see FIG. 7) allows diffusers to be attached at top and bottom of the platform.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS 22 Dec 2020
[0009] An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings:
[0010] FIG. 1 is an illustration of the top, pictorial and front view of a large picture ring comprising of custom artwork on the section marked green with the base shown in red and top in blue. The artwork may be printed as a lithophane. The picture ring bottom fits into a lamp base or the top of another picture ring. The picture ring top accepts a picture ring cap or the bottom of another picture ring. 2020104214
[0011] FIG. 2 is an illustration of the front and pictorial view of 3 different size picture rings being large, medium and small.
[0012] FIG. 3 is an illustration of the top, pictorial and front view of a cap which is securely fitted on the lamp. 2020104214
[0013] FIG. 4 is an illustration of the top, pictorial and front view of a diffuser. The diffuser mitigates shadows cast by some puck lights. The diffuser sits in the lamp base and another diffuser can be held in the lamp cap. Diffusers can also be held by the lugged version of intermediary platform (see FIG. 7)
[0014] FIG. 5 is an illustration of the top, pictorial and front view of a base. The three 22 Dec 2020
circular recesses mark locations for self-adhesive silicone feet. The pairs of notches at either end of the cavity show the orientation of the metal strip to align with magnets on magnetic puck lights. Concentric ridges provide rigidity and a bed for the Diffuser. The chamfered opening at the top allows the user to guide a picture ring into the sleeve section of the base. 2020104214
[0015] FIG. 6 is an illustration of the top, pictorial and front view of an Intermediary Platform. The ability to add more lights using the Intermediary Platform allows illumination in taller lamps where lights fixed bottom and top would not provide sufficient illumination. Intermediary Platforms can be easily removed and installed.
[0016] FIG. 7 is an illustration of the top, pictorial and front view of a Lugged Intermediary Platform. The Lugged Intermediary Platform provides the same functionality as 22 Dec 2020
the Intermediary Platform and allows diffusers to be attached both to the top and bottom of the platform. 2020104214
[0017] FIG. 8 is an illustration of the pictorial, front and top view of a lithophane lamp assembled with 2 large picture rings, the cap and diffusers.
