Abstract

The Smart Infant Monitor is a device worn by infants which provides information on an infant's location and vital signs to a parent/care giver via their mobile smart phone. The device houses a range of battery powdered sensors in a water-proof case that measure location, blood oxygen level, pulse, temperature, sleep or waking state, movements & sounds. Using Wi-Fi hardware within the device, the Smart Infant Monitor will transmit/sync the collected data to the Smart Infant Monitoring app which can be downloaded to various smart phone operating systems. The Smart Infant Monitoring app will allow viewing of the live data so the infant can be actively monitored either at home, outside or when traveling. The app will also passively monitor the infant and provide notifications to user on changes in selected data parameters. An example will be when the infant changes from sleep to waking state. The app will also trigger alerts/alarms if import data parameters move outside of specified ranges.

Component & Function
Blood Oxygen Levels & Heart Beat
An integrated pulse oximetry and heart-rate monitor sensor (Picture 1) will be used to measure both heart beat and blood oxygen levels. These sensors combine two LEDs, a photodetector, optimized optics, and low-noise analogue signal processing to detect pulse oximetry and heart-rate signals. They can also measure pulse oximetry which is a non-invasive measurement of the oxygen saturation (SpO2). Pulse oximetry will be used for rapid assessment of the infant's respiratory function to determine onset of hypoxemia (oxygen starvation).
The blood oxygen & pulse sensor will be housed in the device with the LED's exposed as to be contacted to the infant's skin, required to pick up pulse data. Measuring pulse location can be done in two locations on the foot as seen in Picture 2.
• Sleep & Movement Module
A sensor like an intelligent, low-power, three-axis, capacitive micro machined accelerometer with 10 bits of resolution (see Picture 3) will be used for sleep state detection. These accelerometers have embedded interrupt functions enabling significant power saving, by relieving the CPU processor from continuously polling data. There is access to either low-pass or high-pass filtered data, which minimizes the data analysis required for jolt detection. The device can be configured to generate inertial wake-up interrupt signals from any combination of the configurable embedded functions, enabling the accelerometer to monitor inertial events (sleeping jolts) while remaining in a low-power mode during periods of inactivity.
• Location GNSS Module
A GNSS module (see Picture 4) will be used to provide location data. The small size and low power consumption of this type of GPS module will be needed to reduce drain on the battery. The GNSS module will collect satellite positioning information on its location. This location information is transferred via GPRS link to the mobile operator's GGSN (Gateway GPRS Support Node) and then to a remote server over a TCP connection.
Page 4
1. GSM/GPRS modem Module and SIM
A GSM/GPRS mobile module (See Picture 5) and SIM card will be within the device. This will be required to transmit GPS data collected from the GNSS module and sent via cellular network to google maps servers and the operator's smartphone. This will enable the operator to track the device location and receive data when it is outside Wi-Fi sync range.
• Microphone
A microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) microphone (See Picture 6) similar to those used in smartphones currently will be used to monitor infant sound levels.
• Sensor data transfer/syncing
Data transfer will be done via a wireless 802.11 B/G/N or similar module (See Picture 7) which is designed for use in mobiles, and wearable electronics devices. It has extremely low-power consumption and occupies minimal space. Its minimal wake up time feature can be utilized to remain in low-power standby mode until Wi-Fi is needed.
• Battery
Due to size restraints a rechargeable polymer Lithium Ion Battery (LiPo) 3.7V 1OOOmAh (See Picture 8) or similar will be used. This is the same sort of battery that is used in small mobile devices such as modern activity/exercise trackers and smart phones. Recharging of the battery will be via USB hard ware port such as the current type-C (See Picture 9).
2. Smart Infant Monitor Visual Appearance
Artistic impression of what the Smart Infant Monitor will look like (See Picture 10), showing adjustable strapping and water proof housing sensors, circuitry and power.
Page 5
Smart Infant Monitorinq app Functions
The Smart Infant Monitor will have its own app that will be able to be downloaded to an owners registered/linked smartphone(s). The linking of the device to the smartphone will be done by a code that is provided with each device. The app will have the following general features.
• Dashboards - Main app page showing status of key parameter info and interface allowing access to other areas specific to each monitored parameters, plus setting and configuration screens.
• Historical data screens - Interface subpages showing historical data for each measured parameter. This data will be used to see trends/norms for the infant. Trend data will also feed into monitoring parameters to build up norms for each infant.
• Settings - Main area for selecting how and when notifications and alerts display on registered smartphones. Notifications and alerts will by default occur when parameters move outside set ranges. Registered smartphones can be temporarily set to not receive alerts if that smartphone/carer is not attending the infant e.g. when at work. Parameter alert settings can also be adjusted and manually set if desired.
• New phone & device registering -page for allowing smartphone to be registered/linked to the device. This would be needed if a new phone is purchased or if additional carers need to link their smartphones e.g. grandparents.
• Map - Map screen showing the location of the device(infant)
be actively monitored either at home, outside or when traveling. The app will also passively monitor the infant and provide notifications to user on changes in selected data parameters. An example will be when the infant changes from sleep to waking state. The app will also trigger alerts/alarms if import data parameters move outside of specified ranges. An example is when pulse or blood oxygen drop below as specified level.
