TEMPORARY FENCING CLAMP ASSEMBLY FIELD
[0001] The invention concerns a temporary fencing clamp assembly. In one particular but non exclusive aspect the invention concerns a temporary fencing clamp assembly for use in conjunction with temporary fencing of the type comprising upright fencing panels having upright posts which support wire mesh therebetween.
BACKGROUND
[0002] Temporary fencing is often employed to enclose a construction site to deter unauthorised access. A typical temporary fence comprises a plurality of fencing panels which are detachably attached to one another. The fencing panels are held in an upright orientation with the use of weighted blocks, commonly referred to as fence feet. Each fencing panel includes two upright posts which are laterally spaced apart and are secured to one another by two transverse beams. The upright posts and transverse beams serve to suspend a length of wire mesh therebetween.
[0003] Installers of temporary fencing would at times have encountered the need to erect or position temporary fencing panels across a low wall, such as a retainer wall, located on the boundary of a construction site. Erecting temporary fencing across a low wall can pose certain challenges to installers as it may be difficult to locate the weighted fence feet in a position suitable to support the upright posts of fencing panels across the wall.
OBJECT
[0004] It is an object of the present invention to provide a temporary fencing clamp assembly which addresses or at least ameliorates some of the difficulties associated in securing temporary fencing across a low wall, such as a retaining wall, or to provide a useful alternative temporary fencing clamp assembly for use in supporting temporary fencing.

[0025] Figure 4 is a perspective view of the temporary fencing clamp assembly of Figure 2.
DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
[0026] Figure 1 shows an embodiment temporary fence 10, generally indicated with the reference numeral 10. The temporary fence 10 includes a first temporary fencing panel 12 having a first upright post 14 and a second temporary fencing panel 16 having a second upright post 18. The temporary fence 10 further includes an embodiment temporary fencing clamp assembly 20 which holds the first and second upright posts 14, 18 of the first and second temporary fencing panels 12, 16 respectively. The temporary fencing clamp assembly 20 is secured to a low wall 22, here a retaining wall, and serves to support thefirst and second temporary fencing panels 12, 16 which extend across the retaining wall 22.
[0027] Referring also to Figures 2 to 4 the temporary fencing clamp assembly 20 includes an elongate, longitudinally extending guide 24 having a length which is operatively adapted to span transversely across the width of the top of the retaining wall 22. The fencing clamp assembly 20 further includes a post support 28 operatively adapted to be coupled to the guide 24. The post support 28 includes (i) a first post holder 30 operatively adapted to hold the first upright post 14 of the first temporary fencing panel 12 and (ii) a second post holder 32 operatively adapted to hold the second upright post 18 of the second temporary fencing panel 16.
[0028] The temporary fencing clamp assembly 20 includes a jaw assembly 34 which is operatively adapted to secure the post support 28 on a top part 26 of the retaining wall 22. The jaw assembly 34 is operatively associated with the guide 24 and is adjustable relative to the guide 24 in order to move between (i) a secured position 36 (depicted in Figure 1) in which the jaw assembly 34 is secured to the retaining wall 22, and (ii) a release position 38 (depicted in Figure 2) in which the jaw assembly 34 is adapted to be released from the retaining wall 22.
[0029] The first post holder 30 defines an elongate first post slot 40 operatively adapted to receive and hold a portion of the first upright post 14. The second post holder 32, in turn, defines an elongate second post slot 42 operatively adapted to receive and hold a portion of the second upright post 18. The post support 28 further includes a first guide coupling 44 and a second guide coupling 46 operatively adapted to hold the guide 24.
[0030] The guide 24 is provided in the form of a cylindrical shaft having an external thread 48. The external thread 48 is adapted to engage a corresponding inner thread 50 respectively of the first and second guide couplings 44, 46.
[0031] The jaw assembly 34 includes (i) a first jaw member 52 operatively adapted to engage a first side of the wall 22, and (ii) afirst jaw fastener 56 adapted to secure the first jaw member 52 to the first side 54 of the wall 22. The jaw assembly 34 includes a second jaw member 58 operatively adapted to engage a second side 60 of the wall 22, and (ii) a second jaw fastener 62 adapted to secure the secondjaw member 58 to the second side 60 of the wall 22.
[0032] The first jaw member 52 includes a first guide channel 64 adapted to hold the guide 24. In this embodiment the first guide channel 64 defines an elongate first bore 66 through which the guide 24 passes. The secondjaw member 58 includes a second guide channel 68 adapted to hold the guide 24. The second guide channel 68 defines a non-illustrated second bore through which the guide 24 passes.
[0033] The first and second jaw fastener 56, 62 each includes an inner fastener thread 70 adapted to threadingly engage the external thread 48 of the guide 24. The first and second jaw fasteners 56, 62 each further includes a lever formation 72. In the use the lever formation 72 is manipulated by user to effect longitudinal movement of the first and secondjaw fastener 56. 62 along the guide 24 so as secure the first and secondjaw member 52, 58 respectively against the retaining wall 22. Each lever formation includes two opposing lever arms 74.
[0034] It is envisaged that over extended periods of use the upper edges of the first and second guide slots 40, 42 of the first and second post holders 30, 32 may become bent / deformed as a result of manhandling by operators. Such deformation may hamper the effectiveness of the post support 28. The configuration of the post support 28 is such that it can, when required, be turned upside down so that the guide 24 can engage the second guide coupling 46 and the first and second upright posts 14, 18 can be inserted into the first and second post slots 40, 42 respectively through the formerly bottom, now top, portions of the first and second post holders 30, 32.
[0035] Referring to Figure 1, the temporary fence 10 includes a spacer 76, here similar in configuration and construction to the first and second jaw member 52, 58, coupled to the guide 24. The spacer 76 is located between the post support 28 and the first guide channel 64 and assists in securing the post support 28 in position on the wall 22. A second non-illustrated spacer is located on the opposite side of the post support 28 and co-operates with the second guide channel 68. It is envisaged that the spacer 76 could also be provided in the form of a spacer.
[0036] By providing a temporary fencing clamp as described above, a temporary fence can be installed across a retaining wall without the need for fence feet to support those fencing panels extending across the wall.
[0037] Although the invention has been described with reference to specific examples, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the invention may be embodied in many other forms.
