Description

AN APPARATUS FOR DRAINING OIL
TECHNICAL FIELD [0001] The present invention relates to an apparatus for draining oil. Preferably, the present invention relates to an apparatus for draining and recovering oil from a vehicle, and particularly from a planetary gearbox of a vehicle.
BACKGROUND ART [0002] Applications which require high torque capacity movement with high loading bearing such as earthmovers, wheel loaders, trucks or drill rigs often make use of a planetary gearbox comprising a sun gear located in the centre of the gearbox, an outermost ring gear and one or more (usually two to five) planet gears which engage around the sun gear and inside the ring gear. Such planetary gearboxes may be found in the axle wheel ends of vehicles, tracked vehicle transmissions and in attachments used for drilling, auguring, and the like.
[0003] The disadvantage with planetary gearboxes includes a constant need for lubrication maintenance (usually once every few thousand miles for oil filled gearboxes). In some situations, the planetary gearbox may be difficult to access to drain and refill the gearbox oil. Consequently, some oil is left to drain from the gearbox onto the ground which can pose an environmental and safety hazard to workers performing the oil change if they slip on the oil. In other situations, the planetary gearbox may be located in a position where the draining oil can run down vertical surfaces, such as sides of the vehicle or the tyres of the vehicle (particularly if the wind blows the oil when it is draining) which can also pose a hazard as it increases the chances of wheel slip and loss of vehicle traction. Spilt oil on the sides of the vehicle may leave unsightly marks, collect dirt and other debris, and may damage the vehicle’s paintwork, making it susceptible to rusting.
[0004] In order to prevent oil spillage onto the tyres of the vehicle a maintenance worker may use a cardboard divider placed between the gearbox casing and the wheel housing to direct the draining oil away from the tyre. However, this also
2019208220 25 Jul 2019 creates an environmental pollution with the need for proper disposal of the oil-soaked cardboard.
[0005] Similar problems may also be observed when draining other fluids, such as hydraulic and transmission oils, from certain types of vehicles.
[0006] Thus, there would be an advantage if it were possible to provide an apparatus for collecting oil when draining and recovering oil from a vehicle, and particularly from a planetary gearbox.
[0007] It will be clearly understood that, if a prior art publication is referred to herein, this reference does not constitute an admission that the publication forms part of the common general knowledge in the art in Australia or in any other country.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION [0008] The present invention is directed to an apparatus for draining oil which may at least partially overcome at least one of the abovementioned disadvantages or provide the consumer with a useful or commercial choice.
[0009] With the foregoing in view, the present invention in a first aspect, resides broadly in an apparatus for draining oil from a vehicle, the apparatus for draining oil comprising:
a body comprising an inlet end and an outlet end;
an inlet opening located at the inlet end of the body, and an outlet opening located at the outlet end of the body, the inlet opening and the outlet opening being in fluid communication with one another via a passageway extending through the body; and a lip portion associated with the inlet end of the body, wherein the lip portion is adapted to facilitate removable attachment of the apparatus for draining oil to the vehicle, wherein the inlet end and the lip portion are configured to direct oil from the vehicle towards the inlet opening.
2019208220 25 Jul 2019 [0010] While the apparatus for draining oil could be used with any suitable oilcontaining component of any suitable vehicle, it is envisaged that, in some embodiments, the present invention may be used when draining oil from a gearbox of a vehicle. Specifically, the present invention may be used when draining oil from a planetary gearbox of a vehicle.
[0011] In a second aspect, the invention resides broadly in an apparatus for draining oil when used for draining oil from a planetary gearbox of a vehicle, the apparatus for draining oil comprising:
a body comprising an inlet end and an outlet end;
an inlet opening located at the inlet end of the body, and an outlet opening located at the outlet end of the body, the inlet opening and the outlet opening being in fluid communication with one another via a passageway extending through the body; and a lip portion associated with the inlet end of the body, wherein the lip portion is adapted to facilitate removable attachment of the apparatus for draining oil to the vehicle, wherein the inlet end and the lip portion are configured to direct oil from the planetary gearbox towards the inlet opening.
[0012] The apparatus for draining oil may be any suitable size. However, it is envisaged that the apparatus may be of sufficient size so as to receive oil draining from a vehicle without overflowing. For instance, an apparatus for draining oil used to recover oil from an earthmover planetary gearbox will be larger than an apparatus for draining oil used to recover oil from an automatic transmission of a passenger vehicle. Preferably, the apparatus for draining oil is also of sufficient size to fit within a space defined by the location of the oil drain of the planetary gearbox at one end and a surface, such as a ground surface, a storage container, a vehicle body, or the like, at an opposing end. However, it will be understood that the size of the apparatus oil will vary depending on a number of factors, such as the volume of oil to
2019208220 25 Jul 2019 be collected, the location of the oil drain, the type of oil to be drained, the size of the planetary gearbox, and the type of vehicle.
[0013] The apparatus for draining oil may be any suitable shape or configuration. Preferably, the apparatus is substantially conical in shape. However, it is envisaged that the shape and configuration of the apparatus may be configured so as to optimise the flow rate of oil draining from the planetary gearbox without overflowing. It will be understood that the shape or configuration of the apparatus for draining oil will vary depending on a number of factors, such as the volume of oil to be collected and the viscosity of oil to be drained.
[0014] The apparatus for draining oil comprises a body, the body comprising an inlet end and an outlet end. The inlet end and the outlet end may be located at any suitable orientation to one another. Preferably, however, the inlet end and the outlet end are located at opposite ends of the body.
[0015] The body of the apparatus for draining oil may be of any suitable length and any suitable diameter. The diameter of body of the apparatus may be substantially constant along its length, or may vary along its length. For instance, the body of the apparatus oil may taper along at least a portion of its length, may include a neck or similar narrowing portion, and the like. In a preferred embodiment, it is envisaged that the body may taper from the inlet end towards the opposed outlet end, such that the diameter of the outlet end of the body is smaller than the diameter of the inlet end of the body.
[0016] The body of the apparatus for draining oil may be any suitable shape in cross-section. For instance, the body may have a circular, oval or polygon shape in cross-section. In an embodiment of the invention, the body may have a shape wherein a portion of the shape may be at least partially flattened. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the body may have a shape wherein a portion of the shape may be substantially flat. For instance, where the body of the apparatus for draining oil has a polygon shape in cross-section, a portion of the body defined by the distance between two or more sides of the polygon may be flat or linear. Alternatively, where the body of the apparatus for draining oil has a substantially
2019208220 25 Jul 2019 circular or oval cross-section, a portion of the body defined by a periphery thereof may be at least partially flattened. It is envisaged that, in use, the flattened portions of the body of the apparatus may be positioned in proximity to the oil drain of the planetary gear box, such that the flattened portions of the apparatus are substantially behind or underneath the oil drain of the planetary gear box.
[0017] As previously stated, the body includes a passageway that passes therethrough between the inlet opening and the outlet opening. In this way, the inlet opening and the outlet opening are provided in fluid communication with one another. The passageway may be of any suitable dimensions. For instance, the width or diameter of the passageway may be substantially constant along its length, or may vary along its length. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the passageway may taper along its length between the inlet opening and the outlet opening.
[0018] In some embodiments of the invention, the body may be substantially hollow such that the passageway comprises the interior of the body. In this embodiment, the passageway may taper between the inlet opening and the outlet opening in the same manner as the body tapers between the inlet end and the outlet end.
[0019] The inlet opening may be of any suitable diameter. For instance, the inlet opening may comprise a smaller diameter than the diameter of the inlet end of the apparatus. Alternatively, the diameter of the inlet opening may be substantially the same as the diameter of the inlet end of the apparatus. Similarly, the outlet opening may be of any suitable diameter. For instance, the outlet opening may comprise a smaller diameter than the diameter of the outlet end of the apparatus. Alternatively, the diameter of the outlet opening may be substantially the same as the diameter of the outlet end of the appartus [0020] The passageway may define a substantially linear path between the inlet opening and the outlet opening. Alternatively, the passageway may include one or more curves, or may comprise a tortuous path between the inlet opening and the outlet opening.
2019208220 25 Jul 2019 [0021] The length of the body from the inlet end to the outlet end may be substantially constant about the periphery of the inlet end, or may vary about the periphery of the inlet end. Preferably, the length of the body from the inlet end to the outlet end may be longer about at least a portion of the periphery of the inlet end. Preferably, the one or more longer portions of the body of the apparatus for draining oil may extend around about a quarter of the periphery of the inlet end of the body, about a third of the periphery of the inlet end of the body, or about a half of the periphery of the inlet end of the body. The one or more longer portions may be continuous or may comprise two or more discrete longer portions spaced apart from one another. However it will be understood that the extent to which the longer portions of the body may extend around the periphery of the inlet end may vary depending on a number of factors, such as the shape of the inlet end of the apparatus, the location of the oil drain on the vehicle, the size of the planetary gearbox, and the type of vehicle. It is envisaged that, in use, the longer portions of the body of the apparatus may be positioned in proximity to the oil drain of the planetary gear box, such that the longer portion of the apparatus is substantially behind or underneath the oil drain of the planetary gear box.
[0022] The length of the body may vary depending on the shape of the body of the apparatus for draining oil. For instance, where the body of the apparatus has a polygon shape in cross-section, a portion of the body defined by the distance between two or more sides of the polygon may be longer than an adjacent portion of the body. Alternatively, where the body of the apparatus has a substantially circular or oval cross-section, a portion of the body defined by a periphery thereof may be longer than an adjacent portion of the body. Preferably, the longer portions of the body of the apparatus for draining oil may be symmetrically arranged. Preferably, the longer portions of the apparatus for draining oil may be adjacent.
[0023] The body of the apparatus for draining oil may comprise internal ribs, baffles, projections, or the like, to control or enhance the flow rate of oil draining through the body from the inlet end to the outlet end.
[0024] The body of the apparatus for draining oil may be formed in any manner known in the art, e.g. by injection moulding, rotational moulding, casting,
2019208220 25 Jul 2019 thermoforming, etc. In an embodiment of the invention, the body may be formed as unitary structure. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the body may be formed from two or more portions, wherein the two or more portions are fastened together to form a composite structure. The two or more portions may be fastened together using one or more mechanical fasteners (screws, bolts, rivets, pins, or the like), an adhesive, a heat or chemical treatment, or welded using any suitable technique. Alternatively, the two or more portions may be fastened together by frictional engagement, or by providing complementary screw-threaded portions, press fittings, snap fit features, male-female connectors, or the like.
[0025] The body of the apparatus for draining oil may be fabricated from any suitable material. For instance, the body may be fabricated from a metal or metal alloy, a polymeric material, or any suitable combination thereof. Preferably, the body may be fabricated from a relatively durable polymeric material such as, but not limited to, polycarbonate, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene and the like, or any suitable combination thereof. In a preferred embodiment, the body may be fabricated from polyethylene. Preferably, the body may be fabricated from a high density polyethylene.
[0026] As previously described, the body of the apparatus for draining oil comprises an inlet end. The inlet end of the body defines an inlet opening of the apparatus for draining oil, wherein the inlet opening may be configured to receive oil from a vehicle and/or the planetary gearbox of a vehicle. Preferably, the inlet end may be configured to direct oil from a vehicle and/or the planetary gearbox of a vehicle towards the inlet opening. It is envisaged, that in use, the longer portions of the body of the apparatus may assist in directing the flow of the oil from the vehicle and/or the planetary gearbox of the vehicle towards the inlet opening.
[0027] The inlet end may be of any suitable size, shape or configuration. Preferably, the shape of the inlet end is substantially the same as the cross-section of the body of the apparatus for draining oil. However, it will be understood that the cross-section of the inlet end may vary depending on the location and number of the longer portions of the body of the apparatus and the location and type of lip portion. The inlet end may be integrally formed with the body of the apparatus.
2019208220 25 Jul 2019 [0028] As previously described, the body of the apparatus for draining oil comprises an outlet end. The outlet end of the body is in fluid communication with the inlet end, wherein the outlet end is configured to direct the oil out of the apparatus through the outlet opening. The outlet end may be of any suitable size, shape or configuration. For instance, the outlet end may be substantially circular, substantially oval, or the like, in cross-section. However, it is envisaged that the outlet end may be of sufficient size and shape so as to discharge the oil without the funnel overflowing.
[0029] In an embodiment of the invention, the outlet end may include an outlet portion. It is envisaged that, in this embodiment, an outlet opening may be provided in the outlet portion. In this instance, when the outlet portion is fastened to the outlet end of the body of the apparatus for draining oil, the outlet opening of the outlet portion becomes the outlet opening of the body. Thus, it is envisaged that oil will flow through the inlet opening of the body, along the passageway, out of the outlet opening of the body, into and through the outlet portion and exit the apparatus through the outlet opening of the outlet portion.
[0030] The outlet portion may be integrally formed with the body of the apparatus for draining oil. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the outlet portion and the body of the apparatus for draining oil may be formed separately from one another and adapted for fixed or removable connection to one another at the outlet end of the body. In some embodiments, the outlet portion and the body may be fabricated from two or more pieces of material. The outlet portion may be formed in any manner known in the art, e.g. by injection moulding, rotational moulding, casting, thermoforming, etc. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the outlet portion may be fastened to the body of the apparatus for draining oil to form a composite structure. The outlet portion and the body of the apparatus may be fastened together using one or more mechanical fasteners (screws, bolts, rivets, pins, or the like), an adhesive, a heat or chemical treatment, or welded using any suitable technique. Alternatively, the outlet portion and the body of the apparatus may be fastened together by frictional engagement, or by providing complementary screw-threaded portions, press fittings, snap fit features, male-female connectors, or the like.
2019208220 25 Jul 2019 [0031] The outlet portion of the body of the apparatus for draining oil may be fabricated from any suitable material. For instance, the outlet portion may be fabricated from a metal or metal alloy, a polymeric material, or any suitable combination thereof. Preferably, the outlet portion may be fabricated from a relatively durable polymeric material such as, but not limited to, polycarbonate, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene and the like, or any suitable combination thereof. In a preferred embodiment, the outlet portion may be fabricated from polyethylene. Preferably, the outlet portion may be fabricated from a high density polyethylene. In an embodiment of the invention, the outlet portion and the body of the apparatus may be fabricated from the same type of material. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the outlet portion and the body of the apparatus may be fabricated from or two or more different types of materials.
[0032] The outlet end of the body (or the outlet portion where present) may be provided with a complementary connection portion, such that the outlet end or outlet portion may be retained in removable connection with an accessory, such as a sizemodifying accessory (to reduce or increase the length and/or diameter of the outlet end and/or outlet portion when present), a hose accessory, a storage container (such as a bottle, barrel, or a drum), a plug, a cap, or the like. Alternatively, a coupling, such as a lock nut, may be provided to connect the outlet end or outlet portion with the accessory.
[0033] In an embodiment of the invention, the outlet end (or the outlet portion where present) and the complementary connection portion may be integrally formed. In an alternative embodiment, the outlet end, or an outlet end of the outlet portion, may be provided with a complementary connection portion. Any suitable complementary connection portions may be used. For instance, the outlet end, or an outlet end of the outlet portion, and an accessory may be fastened together by frictional engagement, or by providing screw-threaded portions, press fittings, snap fit features, male-female connectors, or the like.
[0034] In an embodiment of the invention, the outlet end, or an outlet end of the outlet portion, of the apparatus for draining oil may comprise a threaded connection
2019208220 25 Jul 2019 portion. In an embodiment of the invention, the outlet end, or an outlet end of the outlet portion, of the apparatus for draining oil may comprise a threaded male connection portion. In an alternative embodiment, the outlet end, or an outlet end of the outlet portion, of the apparatus for draining oil may be provided with a threaded female connection portion.
[0035] A previously stated, the inlet end of the body is associated with a lip portion. The lip portion may be associated with the inlet end of the body in any suitable manner. For instance, in some embodiments of the invention, the lip portion may be formed integrally with the body. In other embodiments, the lip portion may be formed separately from the body and adapted for fixed or removable connection thereto. Preferably, the lip portion extends outwardly from the inlet opening. The lip portion may extend at any suitable angle. In some embodiments of the invention, the lip portion may extend substantially parallel to the body of the apparatus, and thus may comprise an extension of the body. Alternatively, the lip portion may extend at an angle other than parallel to the body. In some embodiments, the lip portion may comprise a combination of the two. Preferably, the lip portion may extend outwardly from the body. By this it will be understood that the lip portion may extend away from the body so that the lip portion does not overlie the inlet opening.
[0036] The lip portion may extend outwardly from the periphery of the inlet end of the body at any suitable angle. In an embodiment of the invention, the lip portion and the body may be substantially planar. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the lip portion may form an exterior angle of at least 90° with the body, preferably an exterior angle of at least 120° with the body, preferably an exterior angle of at least 140° with the body, preferably an exterior angle of at least 160° with the body. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the lip portion may form an exterior angle of approximately 146° with the body of the apparatus for draining oil.
[0037] In embodiments of the invention where the lip portion is formed integrally with the body, an upper edge of the lip portion may comprise at least a portion of the periphery of the inlet end of the body. The upper edge of the lip portion may comprise any suitable portion of the periphery of the inlet end. For instance, the lip portion may extend around about a quarter of the periphery of the inlet end of the
2019208220 25 Jul 2019 body, about a third of the periphery of the inlet end of the body, or about a half of the periphery of the inlet end of the body. However it will be understood that the extent to which the lip portion may extend around the periphery of the inlet end may vary depending on a number of factors, such as the shape of the inlet end of the apparatus, the location of the oil drain on the vehicle, the size of the planetary gearbox, and the type of vehicle.
[0038] In embodiments of the invention in which the lip portion is formed separately to the body and adapted for fixed or removable connection thereto, the lip portion may be associated with the periphery of the inlet end of the body. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the lip portion may be connected directly to the periphery of the inlet end of the body. Alternatively, the lip portion may be indirectly connected to the periphery of the inlet end of the body, such as via one or more intermediate members.
[0039] The lip portion may be adapted to facilitate removable attachment of the apparatus for draining oil to a vehicle. The lip portion may be adapted for removable attachment to the vehicle by any suitable means. In an embodiment of the invention, the lip portion may be provided with one or more attachment members. Any suitable attachment members may be used. For instance, the lip portion may be retained in removable attachment to the vehicle via a frictional fitting, a magnetic attachment, screw-threaded engagement, snap engagement or combinations thereof. In other embodiments, one or more mechanical fasteners (screws, bolts, nails, rivets or the like) may be used to attach the lip portion to the vehicle. In an embodiment of the invention, the lip portion may be at least partially retained by a portion of the vehicle. For instance, the lip portion may comprise an aperture or recess adapted to allow a projection on the vehicle to pass thereinto or therethough in order to retain the lip portion on the vehicle. Preferably, the lip portion may be substantially retained by a portion of the vehicle. It is envisaged that in use, when the lip portion of the apparatus is removably attached to the vehicle, the apparatus is substantially precluded from movement relative to the vehicle.
[0040] In an embodiment of the invention, the lip portion may be shaped such that it is at least partially retained by a portion of the vehicle. It is envisaged that the
2019208220 25 Jul 2019 lip portion may be at least partially retained by a portion of the vehicle in proximity to the oil drain in frictional engagement. It is envisaged that in use, the lip portion of the apparatus may be at least partially retained by an outer surface of the axle wheel end of a vehicle. The lip portion may be any suitable shape. However it will be understood that the shape of the lip portion may vary depending on a number of factors, such as the location of the oil drain on the vehicle, the size of the planetary gearbox and the type of vehicle.
[0041] In an embodiment of the invention, the lip portion may be retained in removable attachment to the vehicle via magnetic attachment. In an embodiment of the invention, the lip portion may be provided with a magnetic portion. Any suitable magnetic portion may be provided. For instance, the magnetic portion may be a magnetic material (such as a magnet, a magnetic polymer, a polymer infused with a magnetic material), or may be fabricated from a magnetic material (such as a magnetic polymer, a polymer infused with a magnetic material), or combinations thereof.
