Abstract

ASCRAPERFORACONVEYORBELT A scraper (10) for a conveyor belt, the scraper including: a longitudinally extending body (11) to extend longitudinally transverse of the belt, the body (11) having a mounting portion (13) via which the scraper (10) is to be attached to a support, and an attachment portion (14) fixed to the mounting (13) so as to be supported thereby; and a plurality of scraper tips (15) fixed to the attachment portion (14) so as to provide a blade that is to engage the belt, with at least some of the tips (15) having a width (16), a thickness (17) and a depth (18), with the width (16) and depth (18) defining a surface via which each of the tips (15) is secured to the attachment portion (14), and with the width (16) to extend generally transverse of the belt, and the thickness (17) is at least 20mm. 0""

Description

[0001] The present invention relates to scrapers for conveyor belts that engage the conveyor belts to remove material therefrom.
BACKGROUND [0002] In the mining industry where product, such as iron ore, is transported by means of conveyor belts, it is necessary to engage the carrying surface of the belt with a scraper to remove material therefrom.
[0003] Previous scrapers have consisted of a base to which there is attached a plurality of tungsten tips. The tips are located adjacent each other so as to form a blade that engages the surface of the conveyor belt that receives the material to be conveyed. These tips are braised to a base.
[0004] Previous scrapers have a number of disadvantages including cracking of the tips and short working life. In respect of short working life, when the tips are worn beyond a predetermined level, the scraper needs to be removed and replaced. This results in downtime for the conveyor. Cracking of the tips is a result of different rates of thermal expansion and contraction of the tips relative to the base during braising of the tips to the base.
OBJECT [0005] It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate at least one of the above disadvantages.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION [0006] There is disclosed herein a scrape for a conveyor belt, the scraper including:
a longitudinally extending body to extend longitudinally transverse of the belt, the body having a mounting portion via which the scraper is to be attached to a support, and an attachment portion fixed to the mounting so as to be supported thereby; and
21977167
2019200265 16 Jan 2019 a plurality of scraper tips fixed to the attachment portion so as to provide a blade that is to engage the belt, with at least some of the tips having a width, a thickness and a depth, with the width and depth defining a surface via which each of the tips is secured to the attachment portion, and with the width to extend generally transverse of the belt, and the thickness is at least 20mm.
[0007] Preferably, the thickness is about 25mm.
[0008] Preferably, the width is less than 40mm.
[0009] Preferably, the width is less than 30mm.
[0010] Preferably, the width is about 25mm.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS [0011] Preferred forms of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
[0012] Figure 1 is a schematic isometric view of a scraper for a conveyor belt;
[0013] Figure 2 is a further schematic isometric view of the scraper of Figure 1;
[0014] Figure 3 is a schematic end elevation of the scraper of Figure 1; and [0015] Figure 4 is a schematic sectioned side elevation of the scraper as shown in Figure 3.
DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS [0016] In the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted a scraper 10 to engage the product conveying surface of a conveyor belt. The scraper 10 includes an elongated base 11 to extend generally transverse relative to the conveying surface of the belt conveyor. The belt conveyor would move past the blade 10 in the direction 12.
21977167
2019200265 16 Jan 2019 [0017] Preferably the base 11 is “L” in transverse cross-section so as to provide a mounting flange 13 via which the scraper 10 is attached to a supporting structure. The base (body) 11 also includes an attachment flange 14 to which there is fixed (preferably by braising) a plurality of tungsten scraper tips 15.
[0018] Preferably each of the tips 15 has a rectangular prism configuration so as to have a width 16, a thickness 17 and a depth 18. The width 16 extends generally transverse relative to the belt that is to be engaged by the scraper 10. The width 16 and depth 18 define a surface 24 of the tip 15.
[0019] The mounting flange 13 has at least two passages 19 through which there extend threaded fasteners (bolts) 20. Engaged with the threaded fastener 20 is a nut 21, with the threaded fasteners 20 attaching the base 11 to a supporting structure.
[0020] The mounting flange 14 is recessed (as best seen in Figure 4) so that each of the tips 15 is fixed to a generally planar surface 21 of the flange 14, as well as an end surface 22. The surfaces 21 and 22 cooperating with the tips 15 to locate them correctly on the attachment flange 14.
[0021] The surface 24 of each tip 15 is braised to the surface 21.
[0022] Preferably the width 16 is less than 40mm. More preferably the width 16 is less than 30mm. Most preferably the width 16 is about 25mm.
[0023] Preferably the thickness is at least 20mm. Most preferably the thickness is about 25mm.
[0024] Preferably the depth is about 3mm.
