Field of invention
The present invention relates to a modular garden edging system having incorporated lighting and adapted to provide a continuous light effect.
Background of invention
Garden lighting allows an owner or occupier to enhance the aesthetics and accessibility of their garden by illuminating pathways and plants, thereby providing a pleasing visual effect at night.
Current garden lighting can be powered by various means, including solar power, battery power and mains-power. These may be in the form of spotlights, deck lights, bollards, etc.
Solar or battery powered lights are typically small in size such that they can be easily transported and installed without the need for an electrician or landscaper, unlike mains-powered electrical lighting.
Unfortunately, solar and battery powered lights typically do not provide strong illumination and therefore are not generally suited for illuminating pathways. Rather, solar and battery powered lights typically provide low decorative luminosity and are not adapted to provide a light effect that can clearly illuminate a boundary.

Alternatively, mains powered electrical lighting (often in the form of bollards) is used when greater illumination is required, such as when illuminating pathways. However, a typical installation requires an electrician to run power cables to each individual light that is positioned along the pathway. While this form of lighting can effectively light a pathway, the electricians’ costs can be appreciable, particularly when long runs of cable are required. The cost of mains-powered bollard lights can also be prohibitive.
Summary of invention
In accordance with a first embodiment of the invention there is provided a modular garden edging system with incorporated lighting, comprising: at least two edging panels adapted to be joined by an engagement member, each edging panel comprising: an elongate edging portion; and an elongate light emitting portion detachably coupled to an upper edge of the edging portion and configured to be electrically connected to a light source of an adjacent edging panel by way of a connector; and wherein when so joined, the light source of joined panels provides a continuous light effect.

Detailed description
Embodiments of the invention described herein relate to a modular garden edging system that advantageously both creates and illuminates a defined boundary, such as between a pathway and garden bed or a desired landscaped boundary edge. The system comprises at least two edging panels adapted to be joined by an engagement member. In use, one or more light sources are adapted to be located on or around an upper portion of the respective edging panels to provide a continuous light effect that illuminates a boundary.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a first embodiment of the modular garden edging system with incorporated lighting (1). The edging system (1) is adapted to be retained partly in earth and comprises a first edging panel (2), in this example embodiment formed of metal. The first edging panel (2) has an upper edge (3) that projects perpendicularly from an upper portion of the longitudinal side wall (4), while a lower edge (9) projects perpendicularly from a bottom portion of the longitudinal side wall (4). A light source (5) in the form of a weatherproof LED light strip with an adhesive is adhered to the upper edge (3) within a channel (6). In this example embodiment, the channel (6) is U-shaped, although persons skilled in the art will appreciate that other channel shapes are within the purview of the invention.
Upper and lower engagement tabs (7, 8) extend respectively from the upper and lower edges (3, 9) of a first end (10) of the edging panel (2). As shown more particularly in Figure 2, the tabs (7, 8) step downwardly (in a longitudinal direction) from the respective edges (3, 9). Circular openings (11, 12) as illustrated in Figure 1
2019101155 30 Sep 2019 are defined in each of the tabs (7, 8). Circular openings (13, 14) are also defined in the upper and lower edges (3, 9) at a second end (15) of the panel (2).
Figure 3 depicts a perspective view of a series of edging panels (2) connected using stakes (18). More particularly, the first edging panel (2) is joined to a second edging panel (2a) which is in turned joined to a third edging panel (2b).
With further reference to Figure 4, the assembly between the first and second edging panel (2, 2a) is illustrated in greater detail. The first edging panel (2) is located adjacent to the second edging panel (2a) for later joining. The edges (3, 9) of the second end (15) of the second edging panel (2a) seat on the tabs (7, 8) of the first edging panel (2) such that the openings (11, 12, 16, 17) are aligned. A stake (18a) passes through the openings (11, 12, 16, 17) and is used for holding the panels (2, 2a) together such that the tabs (7, 8) seat below and retain the edging panels (2, 2a) in the earth.
When the first and second edging panels (2, 2a) are joined, the respective longitudinal side walls (4) sit flush with each other to create a continuous decorative face.
Further, the third edging panel (now shown in Figure 4) is similarly joined to the modular edging system (1) using another stake (18b). It will be understood that any number of additional panels could be added to the system, as required.

Returning to Figure 3, the light sources (5) of the edging panels (2, 2a, 2b) are joined together such that they are able to provide a continuous light effect along the boundary created by the edging panels (2, 2a, 2b).
According to the illustrated embodiment, the light sources (5) are connected to a power supply (19) in the form of a solar battery. It will be understood that any suitable power supply (19) could be any suitable supply, including a low voltage AC or Direct Current (DC) supply that can be plugged into a general purpose outlet (GPO).
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the third edging panel (2b), in this case an end panel (2b). This end panel (2b) is located at the end of the edging panel assembly and prevents additional edging panels (2) joining to the second end (15) of the third edging panel (2b) due to the presence of an end wall (21). The end panel (21) may be connected using any suitable fixing or fixture.
Figures 6 and 7 depict alternative embodiments of the invention wherein Figure 6 is a curved edging panel (2c) and Figure 7 is an L-shaped edging panel (2d). A person skilled in the art would appreciate that these shapes are just some of the numerous different shapes the edging panel (2) may take. The edging panel may also be deformable such that it is able to take different shapes i.e. initially be straight but have the capacity to be deformable to create a suitably shaped boundary.

Figures 8a and 8b are exploded views of a lighting edge system (1’) in accordance with an alternative embodiment of the invention. In this instance, the system (1’) includes at least one edging panel (20) comprising an upper light emitting portion (24) for providing a continuous light effect and a lower elongate edging portion (23). The light emitting portion (24) contains a light source (5), such as an LED strip light. Multiple panels (20) are joined together in series by way of an engagement member (22). This is best shown in Figures 9 and 12. The light emitting portion (24) is detachably coupled to an upper edge (25) of the edging portion (23) and configured to be electrically connected to the light source (5) of an adjacent edging panel by way of a connector (27).
In more detail, the elongate edging portion (23) comprises a joining portion which allows the elongate light emitting portion (24) to be detachably secured thereto. More particularly, the joining portion comprises a tongue (28) that forms the upper edge (25) of the elongate edging portion (23) and a first ledge (30) that is stepped down from the upper edge (25) and which extends at right angles from an inner wall of the elongate edging portion (23).
The light emitting portion (24) comprises a first channel (32) defined in a lower edge thereof. An inner wall of the first channel (32) terminates in a second inwardly extending ledge (31). In its assembled form, the light emitting portion (24) is configured to seat over the elongate edging portion with the tongue (28) slidingly received in the channel (32) and such that the second ledge (31) seats on the first ledge (30).

A pair of openings (33A, 33B) are located on opposite ends of the first ledge (30) and a second pair of corresponding openings (34A, 34B) are located on opposite ends of the second ledge (31). In use, when the first ledge (31) is seated on the second ledge (30) the pairs of openings (33A, 33B, 34A, 34B) are aligned and configured to receive a fastening mechanism (34C), such as a screw or plug to secure the light emitting portion (24) to the elongate edging portion (23).
Disposed below the first ledge (30) of the elongate edging portion (23) is an upwardly opening second channel (29). An inwardly opening third channel (36) is disposed adjacent the bottom (35) of the elongate edging portion (23). A third perpendicular ledge (41) extends from a bottom edge of the opening of the third channel opening (36). In use, the second and third channels (29, 36) are configured to detachably receive the engagement member (22), as will be described in further detail below.
Figures 10a and 10b illustrates the engagement member (22) in greater detail. The engagement member (22) has a generally C-shaped body (as particularly shown in the side view of Figure 10b) comprised of a top wall, bottom wall and front wall. A pair of projections in the form of tabs (37, 38) extend respectively from an upper and lower portion of the front wall. The upper tab (37) is configured to be slidingly received by the second channel (29) of the elongate edging portion (23) while the lower tab (38) is adapted to be slidingly received by the third channel (36) of the elongate edging panel (23).

The top wall of the engagement member (22) comprises a pair of through holes (39A, 39B). In assembled form one of the pair of through holes (39A) aligns with one of the pair of aligned openings (33B, 34B) from the first and second ledge (30, 31) for receiving a fastening means i.e. screw, connecting pin, plug, etc. Similarly, the remaining one of the pair of through holes (39B) aligns with a pair of aligned openings located on a second edging panel, thereby allowing the first edging panel to join to a second edging panel.
The engagement member (22) further comprises vertically aligned stake through holes (40) disposed in a respective top and bottom wall for receiving a stake (43) to secure the engagement member (22), and thereby the edging panel (23) into the earth.
An edging support member (22’) (sans stake) is shown in Figure 11. Like the engagement member (22) of Figure 10, the edging support member (22’) includes a top, bottom and front wall with the same general tab and stake through hole configuration. However, the edging support member (22’) has a longer bottom wall and a rear wall that connects the ends of the top and bottom walls. In addition, a further stake through hole (40) is provided in the rear wall for receiving an additional stake (43). As shown, the further stake through hole (40) extends through a cylindrical body that is integrally formed into the sloping rear wall. The longer bottom wall and additional stake may advantageously prevent the edging panels (20) from tipping or forward movement from earth filled behind the edging. It will be understood that the edging support member (22’) may additionally be used as an engagement

Figure 13 is a view of an end piece (44) for use in neatly terminating a run of edging panels (20). Figure 14 is an exploded view of the end piece (44) and edging panel (20) of Figure 8. The end piece (44) comprises two perpendicular projections (51, 52) which are configured to seat respectively on the second ledge (31) and third ledge (41). More particularly, the first projection (51) is located at the upper end of the end piece (44) and comprises an opening (53) which aligns with the assembled/aligned first and second ledge openings (33A, 33B) at one end of the edging panel (20). The second projection (52) is located toward the bottom end of the end piece (44) and comprises an opening (54) which aligns with an opening (42) located at an end on the third ledge (41). For assembly, a fastening means, such as a plug, screw or the like, is passed through the aligned openings for securing the end piece (44) to the edging panel (23). As particularly shown in Figure 13, the panel comprises a cable opening (55) through which a power cable can be neatly routed for connecting to the light source (5).
In an embodiment, light sources (5) of adjacent panels are electrically connected by way of a suitable electrical joiner that is enclosed in a weatherproof cover (45). The weatherproof cover neatly sits on the second ledge 31, allowing for an uninterrupted light edge within the light emitting portion (24). This is best shown in Figure 12.

A pair of edging panels (20) can be joined to make a corner by way of a corner engagement member (46) as shown in Figure 15. Upper and lower tabs (37, 38) are provided on each side wall of the engagement member (46) for being slidingly received by the first and second channels (29, 36) of respective adjacent panels. This is best shown in Figure 16. The angled engagement member (46) allows the ending panels to create 90-degree corners. However, a person skilled in the art would appreciate that the walls of the angled engagement member (46) may be configured to accommodate other angles.
In an embodiment of the invention the modular garden edging system (1, T) further comprises a controller adapted to adjust one or more lighting parameters for the light source (5). The controller may be able to turn the light source (5) on and off, or may be able to direct the light source (5) to display a particular light pattern. In an embodiment, the modular garden edging system (1, T) may further comprise a motion sensor, such that the controller is adapted to turn the light source (5) on when it receives a signal from the motion sensor.
The modular garden edging system (1, T) may comprise a power supply to power the light source (5). This may be in the form of a battery, a solar battery, a mains-power or any other power supply that is adapted to power the light source (5) and/or any sensors or additional accessories on the modular garden edging system (1,T).
A person skilled in the art would appreciate that the edging panels described herein may be made of any number of materials without departing from the nature of
2019101155 30 Sep 2019 the invention, such as but not limited to metal, plastic, galvanised steel, corten steel, aluminium, etc. It would be advantageous if the material used were non-corrosive.
The light source (5) may be any means that is able to provide light without departing from the nature of the invention. Such forms of light source may include lighting strips, LED lights, solar lights or solar Light-Emitting Diode (LED) strip lights. The light source (5) may be adhered to the edging panel (2) in numerous fashions, such as by way of a preformed channel that is adapted to slidingly receive a lighting strip. Other non-limiting means for securing the light source include adhesive, glue, screws, Velcro™, and self-adhesive tape. It will be understood that the light source (5) may be detachable and that the lighting sources (5) used in the system may be electrically or magnetically connected or connected to separate power sources.
The light source (5) may be covered by a light diffuser, which spreads the light of the light emitting portion.
The edging portion (23) and the light emitting portion (24) of the edging panel (20) can be secured together using any fastening means which does not depart from the nature of the invention. Examples include metal plugs, plastic plugs, screws, etc.
The light source (5) may display light of any colour, including white, red, green, blue, etc light.

A person skilled in the art would appreciate that the engagement means is understood to be any means that allows edging panels (2) to be joined.
The edging panel (2) may further comprise a cover received over the light source (5) to protect the light source (5) from the elements.
The stakes (43) may be made of any material, including but not limited to plastic, metal, etc.
Multiple advantages arise through one or more embodiments as described above including:
- Ability to evenly spread light minimising droppage in lux at end points of joined embodiment when assembled;
- Ability to change or interchange top lighting pieces if damaged or wanting a style change;
- Engagement system prevents tipping or forward movement from earth filled behind the edging embodiment;
- Provides a robust and long-term garden lighting solution as opposed to cheap solar lighting;
- Edging embodiment provides integrated garden lighting that may reduce the risk of assaults in dimly lit areas;
- May provide a cost-effective solution combining lighting and edging in the single product;
- Easily installed/uninstalled without the need for an electrician;

- Assists visually impaired people to navigate garden areas safely;
- Improves the visual aesthetics of a landscaped area;
- Provides straight edging with non-intrusive lighting;

Claims (17)
1. A modular garden edging system with incorporated lighting, comprising: at least two edging panels adapted to be joined by an engagement member, each edging panel comprising:
an elongate edging portion; and an elongate light emitting portion detachably coupled to an upper edge of the edging portion and configured to be electrically connected to a light source of an adjacent edging panel by way of a connector; and wherein when so joined, the light source of joined panels provides a continuous light effect.
2. The modular garden edging system of claim 1, wherein the at least two edging portions are at least partially retained in the earth.
3. The modular garden edging system of claim 1, wherein a light source is located within the light emitting portion
4. The modular garden edging system of claim 1, wherein the engagement member comprises an upper and lower opening adapted to receive a stake for securing into the earth.

5. The modular garden edging system of claim 2, wherein the openings are disposed in respective upper and lower tabs that extend inwardly from a main body of the engagement member.
6. The modular garden edging system of claim 1, further comprising of a joining portion extending from the elongated edging portion for connecting the edging portion thereto, such that:
a) a tongue of joining portion extends from an upper edge of the elongate edging portion and is locatable within a channel disposed in or adjacent to the upper edge of the edging portion;
b) a leg of the joiner forms a first ledge extending inwardly from the edging system.
7. The modular garden edging system of claim 6, wherein a second ledge extends inwardly from an inner wall of the channel disposed in the lower portion of the light emitting portion and wherein, in use, the second ledge seats on the first ledge.
8. The modular garden edging system of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the edging portion comprises a second channel having an inwardly facing opening that extends along a bottom portion thereof and wherein the engagement member comprises a pair of projections that are slidingly received within the respective first and second channels of adjacent edging panels.

The modular garden edging system of claim 6, wherein through holes are disposed adjacent each end of the first and second ledges and wherein a pair of through holes are disposed in the upper tab of the engagement member and wherein, in use the ledge through holes at one end of the edging panel align with one of the through holes in the engagement member for receiving a connecting pin or plug and wherein the through holes at an adjacent end of a joined panel align with the other through hole in the engagement member for receiving a connecting pin or plug.
10. The modular garden edging system of any of the preceding claims, further comprising a controller adapted to adjust the one or more light sources.
11. The modular garden edging system of any of the preceding claims, further comprising a power supply.
12. The modular garden edging system of any of the preceding claims, wherein the one or more light sources are LED light sources.
13. The modular garden edging system of any of the preceding claims, wherein the light source comprises an LED light strip.
14. The modular garden edging system of any of the preceding claims, wherein the light source is powered by solar, battery, or direct current (DC) adapter to an AC power supply.

15. The modular garden edging system of any of the preceding claims, wherein the edging panel is deformable.
16. The modular garden edging system of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the light emitting portion comprises a translucent portion through which light from the light source projects.
17. The modular garden edging system of any of the preceding claims, wherein the at least two edging panels are made of plastic, metals or other materials thereof.
