Abstract

The invention proposes a device and a method thereof. The device includes a 2-way radio equipment and a Bluetooth transceiver. The speaker and the microphone are configured to output audio from and provide audio sound to both the 2-way radio equipment and Bluetooth transceiver, based on the selection by the microcontroller, which is controlled by a transmission button of the device. When an audio signal transmission is detected on the 2-way radio equipment, the Bluetooth audio is blocked and 2-way audio signal is passed to the speaker. When the 2-way radio audio transmission is not detected, the microcontroller reverts to default status. When the transmission button is pressed by a user, a microcontroller blocks all audio output and waits till button is released to revert back to a default status, which passes Bluetooth audio chip output to speaker and checks any incoming audio on the 2-way radio equipment. Description

Background:
Radio transceiver equipment, or 2-way radio equipment, is defined as a device that contains both a transmitter and a receiver sharing common circuitry or a single housing. If no circuitry is common between the transmitter and receiver functions, the device is classified as radio transmitter-receiver equipment.
Radio transceiver or transmitter-receiver equipment, hereafter referred to as 2-way radio, can be installed as a fixed installation, fitted to a vehicle, or worn as portable equipment, has a handheld microphone unit physically and electrically attached. The 2-way radio equipment also has an internal speaker or external extension speaker or headphones to allow the operator to hear the received audio.
However, the current 2-way radio equipment do not allow for other audio equipment, like a music player or mobile phone, to connect into it to play audio sound through 2-way radio’s internal speaker or external extension speaker or headphones, hereafter referred to as speaker.
Statement of invention:
The present invention relates to incorporating a Bluetooth audio chip into a 2-way radio, enabling a user to communicate on the 2-way radio, perform hands-free telephony and listen to music using the speaker and microphone previously dedicated for the use of the 2-way radio only.
A Bluetooth audio chip uses the so-called ‘Bluetooth’ radio specification, where signals can be transmitted directionlessly, voice and written data can both be processed, multiple devices can be connected simultaneously, signal transmission angle is not limited and signals can pass through walls. A Bluetooth audio chip enables the user to receive phone calls and listen to music when connected to appropriate digital device like a mobile phone. The Bluetooth audio chip is also capable accepting audio input from other audio equipment, like a music player, using auxiliary wire or cable input. The Bluetooth audio chip connects to another Bluetooth enabled source device, like an audio player or mobile phone, and acts as an end point or audio sink, ready to output music or sound.
The benefit of this invention is that a user can use a 2-way radio and simultaneously listen to music using the speaker available for the 2-way radio. The user can also converse on the telephone using Bluetooth audio chip in the invention and use the same microphone and speaker set up for 2-way radio for this purpose without the need for a separate speaker and microphone or switching devices.
This is achieved by integrating, physically and electrically, a Bluetooth audio chip and a 2-way radio. A microcontroller is used to monitor these functional elements and control the audio output into the speaker, preventing audio signals clashing with each other as they are output through the speaker. The microcontroller within the invention controls and prioritises, based on a method, the audio sound that is output from the speaker.
Advantages:
The advantage of the present invention, and the method used therein, is that a user can pass audio signals from a Bluetooth device and/or auxiliary connection into a 2-way radio and play audio sounds through the speaker of the 2-way radio without the sounds clashing with each other.
The advantage of this invention is that it integrates 2-way radio and Bluetooth capable mobile communication device and allows users to communicate simultaneously using a single device instead of having to switch between devices.
Summary of invention:
The invention can be broken into sections based on their key functions. The key functional units for operation of this invention are the 2-way radio, Bluetooth audio chip, microcontroller, speaker, microphone, transmission button and power supply.
The microphone is connected to both the 2-way radio and Bluetooth audio chip. The audio signals picked up by the microphone is only transmitted if transmission button is activated or a phone call is activated on the Bluetooth capable communication device connected to the invention using Bluetooth.
The speaker is connected to both the 2-way radio and Bluetooth audio chip. The audio output of the speaker is managed by an on-board microcontroller. The microcontroller decides which audio signal take precedence based on pre-coded method and selects the most appropriate audio to transmit.
Upon powering the invention, the power supply provides electricity to all elements within the invention.
The 2-way radio, as a default, is set on a receive mode and 2-way radio audio output is blocked by the microcontroller.
2019101106 25 Sep 2019
The Bluetooth audio chip for the very first operation waits for the Bluetooth capable communication or audio device to connect to it. Thereafter, for future operations, upon powering the invention, the Bluetooth chip will automatically look for Bluetooth capable communication or audio device it has connected previously and connect to it automatically. After connection, the user can use the invention’s speaker and microphone to play music or communicate.
An audio input can also be provided via the audio input port if Bluetooth is not preferred. The audio input is passed into the Bluetooth audio chip and output as an audio output from Bluetooth audio chip.
As a default the Bluetooth audio output is allowed to pass through to the speaker by the microcontroller.
When microcontroller detects an audio transmission coming in through the 2-way radio, the sound from the Bluetooth audio chip is blocked and 2-way radio’s incoming audio signal is passed as audio output to the speaker. When the microcontroller detects the 2-way transmission as complete, the audio from 2-way radio is blocked and audio from the Bluetooth audio chip is resumed.
When the microcontroller detects activation of transmission button, all audio outputs from the invention is blocked to cue the user to start talking. The activation of the transmission button engages the 2-way radio to transmit the audio signal picked up the microphone. Upon deactivation of the transmission button, audio signal from the microphone is no longer transmitted through the 2-way radio and the audio output from the Bluetooth audio chip is resumed and 2-way radio is blocked till a new incoming audio input.
