Abstract

The disclosed sleeve for bassinet mattresses is a fabric band with a smooth material on top so that there is no friction created against a baby's head or hair. Stretch fabric and fasteners on the underside of the sleeve allow for the sleeve to be adjusted so that it can snugly fit a variety of mattress sizes without any excess fabric being loose. Description

It is common for babies and infants to experience hair loss and develop bald patches. This is sometimes due to hormonal changes, but is also often caused by friction. The American Academy of Pediatrics, as well as other child health organisations around the world recommend that babies always sleep on their backs to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Since babies spend a lot of time on their backs, they are constantly rubbing the backs of their heads against their mattresses, resulting in their fine hair being tugged and eventually pulled out.
This adjustable silk sleeve for bassinets has been invented in order to add a smooth surface to any sized bassinet mattress in order to prevent baby bald patches, as well as allow for hair growth where bald spots already exist.
The appearance of the sleeve is similar to that of a band, and wraps around a baby’s bassinet mattress, at the position where the baby’s head would be.
The top of the sleeve is made from silk, providing a lustrous and frictionless surface for a baby to lay their head. Cotton, bamboo and other fabrics can tug and pull on delicate baby hair, but the long strands and tightly woven nature of premium silk creates a smooth surface that allows hair to glide unrestricted and unharmed. Satin could also be used, however silk is the preferred fabric since it is a natural material, and has a myriad of other benefits such as being naturally hydrating, hypoallergenic and thermal regulating.
The bottom of the sleeve, which is hidden from view when placed onto a mattress, is made from a stretch polyester, and features multiple zippers. The combination of the stretch fabric and the zippers allow users to adjust the size of the sleeve in order to achieve the perfect fit. International SIDS organisations, such as The American SIDS Institute in the US, The Lullaby Trust in the UK, Red Nose Australia and Baby’s Breath in Canada all advise that babies should never have any loose bedding. The adjustable feature of the sleeve means it can fit all bassinet mattresses snugly, without the risk of any excess fabric being pulled out and let loose. Alternative fabrics that have stretch properties, such as spandex or rayon, could also be used in place of polyester. Zippers can be replaced with other forms of fasteners, such as buttons, clasps, buckles, ties or clips, however zippers provide a stronger and more even hold.
