Description
FISHING STATION [0001] The present invention relates to a fishing station, and in particular to fishing station which can be used to hold multiple fishing rods and other items.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION [0002] Fishing is a popular pursuit around the world, including land based fishing such as from a beach. To get to a good fishing spot a person may need to walk some distance including over uneven ground, soft sand or rocks. A person will need to carry rods, bait, a tackle box, knife, cutting board, a bucket and cool box of refreshment to the location where it is desired to fish. The location may be at the beach in which case the beach must be reached, and then walked along to a suitable place where fishing can take place, perhaps close to creek or inlet. In other circumstances a person may take a rocky path to a further beach or location where fishing can take place. In other circumstances a person may walk a jetty or sea wall to get to a suitable fishing location. A person may need to carry fishing rods and other heavy or awkward articles some distance to get to the place where it is desired to fish.
[0003] A person is limited by how much they can carry on such fishing trips, one hand needs to carry the rod, as due to its length it is difficult to carry in any manner other than directly in the hand. Fishing stands of a bent piece of metal are known, which are generally carried in the same hand as the fishing rod, also being a long, heavy item.
[0004] The other hand must then be used to carry everything else, such as bait, knife, cutting board, tackle, a bucket for water and cold box. A compromise must often be made when walking more than a few steps as the task becomes difficult due to the weight and awkwardness of the items to be carried. Generally, the fishing bait is a smelly, wet plastic package which it is desirable to keep isolated from other items, and so may be carried in a further plastic bag or bucket.
specPA2049418
2018282462 21 Dec 2018 [0005] Once the fisher reaches a suitable spot they can use a conventional bent metal fishing stand in the sand and it can hold a single rod so that it need not be held in the hand all of the time. The other articles can then be put on the sand and fishing commence. If more than one rod is to be used then more than one stand would need to be carried which is awkward and adds to the weight. These stands need to be arranged separately along a beach, separated by several metres so that the rods can be used to fish without tangling the lines. If a person is walking a greater distance to fish, a single rod only may be taken, a single stand, bait, a knife and a very few items of tackle, limited by how much a person can comfortably carry.
[0006] The inventors of the subject application have, through careful research and development, invented a surprisingly effective fishing station with a multitude of uses and benefits. The fishing station has significant and numerous advantages over the prior art, which can be economically manufactured to provide fishers with a really useful and desirable article. It is anticipated that the fishing station will become a standard piece of equipment for both the weekend and professional fisher, due to the ease of use and multiple advantages over conventional methods of carrying items and known fishing stands.
[0007] For clarity, any prior art referred to herein, does not constitute an admission that the prior art forms part of the common general knowledge, in Australia or elsewhere.
[0008] It is an object of the present invention to provide a fishing station that at least ameliorates one or more of the aforementioned problems of the prior art.

[0056] Figure 9 is a side view of the fishing station of Figure 8, showing the full apparatus in use; and [0057] Figure 10 is a side view of the base of a second preferred embodiment of the fishing station, very similar to the first but for use where a stronger footing is desired.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS INCLUDING A BEST METHOD [0058] Referring to Figures 1 to 9, a first preferred embodiment of the invention will be described, where fishing station 1 has body 10 with top edge 12 and base 14. Body 10 has a circular cross-section, whereby top edge is generally circular as is base 14. Base 14, however, is shaped so that point 15 is formed for assisting to specPA2049418
2018282462 21 Dec 2018 push fishing station 1 into the ground for use as a fishing rod stand, as described in more detail below.
[0059] Body 10 is generally a cylindrical shape with many adaptations to provide the benefits of this extremely useful product. Other shapes could also be used, for example, being rectangular including square, triangular, hexagonal or irregular shape in cross-section. Body 10 as illustrated is made of a polyurethane material. Other plastics or metal could be used suitable for outdoor use and to be carried by a person.
[0060] Body 10 has outer wall 16 surrounding a hollow body in which many useful features are included. The hollow body part is useful when travelling to a fishing spot fishing rods and reels 17 either whole or in parts can be placed within body 10 to facilitate carrying. Fishing rods 17 can be maintained in place by the reel, preventing the rod from slipping through. Fishing rods 17 are usually carried in the hand to a fishing location, and are heavy, and awkward. Putting the rods 17 within body 10 enables several rods 17 with the attached reels to be carried easily within fishing station 1 which in turn can be carried in the hand or over the shoulder making the carrying of the weight far easier.
[0061] As can be seen in particular in Figure 1, an incremental measure is included on the side of body 10. As illustrated 600 millimetres is measured in centimetre increments as is useful for fishing. Other lengths such as 700 or 800 millimetres or more would also be suitable for the measure, as could be measures of greater length. Fishing regulations determine the length of a fish or other species that are allowed to be kept and taken from waters. It is therefore a useful benefit to have a measure handy on fishing station 1 to enable quickly to measure the length of a fish to see if it can be kept or must be put back in the water.
[0062] Other activities during fishing such as measuring line when making a trace or size of hooks may also utilise the measurements. Clearly, the type and number of increments may be varied to suit the desires of the intended user.
specPA2049418
2018282462 21 Dec 2018 [0063] A number of the features of fishing station 1 will now be described as illustrative of the invention. The number, position and form of these features can be varied to suit a particular application or intended user.
[0064] Knife holder 18 for knife 19 is a useful addition to hold knife 19 safely during transportation and fishing. Knife holder 18 is in the form of a suitably sized slit in wall 16 of body 10. The slit is angled slightly to tend the blade of the knife in a downward direction so that the knife is maintained in the slit under gravity. As the knife blade sits flat other items can be carried within body 10 at the same time as use of knife holder 18.
[0065] In other forms of the invention, knife holder 18 may be used only while fishing not during transportation. Knife 19 can be slipped by the blade through the slit to sit within body 10 so only a handle projects out. In this way the blade of knife 19 is protected within fishing station 1, and prevented from causing accidental damage to other items during carriage and is also kept safe from causing injury. During fishing often things happen quickly and it may be that a knife is wanted quickly to remove a poisonous fish or to quickly bait up when a school of fish is about. It is beneficial to have a set location for the knife so all parties know where knife 19 can be found if needed but also that the knife is kept safe and ready for use at all times. A fishing knife is a quite a small article and at the end of the day as the light levels reduce can easily be left behind. Having a set place for the knife makes it easier to keep the knife safe but also to check that the knife is present before heading home.
[0066] Knife holder 18 is illustrated as a slit of approximately 25 millimetres as is useful for typical fishing knives. Other dimensions or a range of slits of different sizes may be included for several knives, could also be used instead.
[0067] Three cut-outs 20 formed around the body and pressed in, are included, so that a can or bottle can be balanced in the top of body 10 as a drink holder. The specPA2049418
2018282462 21 Dec 2018 drink holder may take other forms or shapes and could be attached to body 10 instead. Figure 5 illustrates in a view from the top showing how a can or bottle (not shown) could rest in the top of fishing station 1 during use.
[0068] Hook 22 is included as a further very useful addition to support bucket 23 for fishing, by its handle. Bucket 23 is illustrated as a 22 litre bucket on which items may be hung either during carrying or use as a fishing stand. Hook 22 can be used for any item to be hung and carried. Some items may be hung on hook 22 during transportation and then different items may be hung on hook 22 in use as a fishing rod stand. The height of hook 22 is important as a 22 litre bucket can be suspended which is useful for water for the fish or bait, keeping everything off the ground and close at hand.
[0069] Three fishing rod holders 24, 26 and 27 are included in body 10 of fishing station 1, arranged around the body. The rod holders 24, 26 and 27 are formed having a circular opening into which fishing rods 17 are placed. Fishing rods 17 may then pass into body 10 of fishing station and be maintained in place by the reel. The clever angling and arrangement of the three rod holders 24, 26 and 27 enables three fishing rods and reels 17 to be used, extending line out in three different angles simultaneously. As a great advance over the prior art a group of three fishers can use this common fishing station to each have a line in the water. The particular angles assist to prevent tangling of the extended lines, even though each of the three lines would originate from the same actual position. Advantageously, the three lines can be close to one another so it is easy to pick up rod 17 if it appears a fish may biting. Other arrangements are also envisaged. Fishing rods of different sizes can be used in fishing station 1 as the size of the receptacle is suitable for standard rod sizes. However, the size can be readily altered. For example, there may be larger form of the invention adapted specifically for surf fishing rods that tend to be longer and more sizable than standard fishing rods.

2018282462 21 Dec 2018 [0070] The careful arrangement of rod holders 24, 26 and 27 has been developed through extended experimentation, and the particular arrangement shown to be particular good. The height and angle of each position of the rod holders has been considered in the design to optimise convenience and minimise tangling. Other forms and other numbers of rod holders could also be used, however it is important to minimise tangling during use.
[0071] Hook 28 is include for use with a bait bucket described below. Other fixings could be used instead but it is particularly useful to have a simple hook arrangement that enables quick and easy attachment or detachment of the bait bucket.
[0072] Handle 30 is a PVC handle as illustrated strongly fixed to body 10 by standard screw fixings. Other plastics or metal could be used instead, and handle 30 may be shaped to fit nicely in the hand to assist in the carrying of fishing station
1. Handle 30 can be held in the hand so that fishing station 1 can be carried from a vehicle for example to the desired spot to go fishing. Handle 30 is of a standard form for convenient grip and holding of fishing station either at the end of the arm or raised over the shoulder. When a greater weight is carried it may be that the weight is supported resting fishing station one against the shoulder of a person and holding handle 30 to maintain the position. In this way fishing station 1, and rods, reels, bait and other items can all be carried easily together.
[0073] In fact fishing station 1 is adapted to be carried single-handedly leaving the other hand free for a tackle box, cooler, bucket or other items that need to be carried. Or everything can be carried by use of fishing station 1 so that a person has the other hand free at all times which can be very useful when travelling over rocks for example. All in all the apparatus is configured to enable easy singlehanded carrying of the fishing articles.
specPA2049418
2018282462 21 Dec 2018 [0074] Handle 30 may be usefully be replaced by a shoulder strap, to carry the apparatus single handed, instead.
[0075] Foot step 32 is formed in wall 16 of fishing station 1, as illustrated by a cutout bent portion forming a step. The step formed is so that on arrival at a suitable spot for fishing a person can use the strength of their foot and leg to push fishing station 1 into the sand. Combined with point 15 of base 14 fishing station 1 is very easily slid into the sand or soft ground so that fishing station 1 is maintained there. The angle can be varied to suit the fishing rods and distance to the water, so that fishing station 1 is kept in position in the ground ideal for fishing and resistant to falling over. The resistance of the fishing station to horizontal forces such as waves, wind or the pull of a fish on a rods is strong but the fishing station can also be easily removed with an upward pull.
[0076] In other forms of the invention alternative bases or stands could be included. For example, it is envisaged that a version could be provided with a flat bottomed stand, adapted to enable the fishing station to be used on a jetty or harbour side, that is the stand is not pushed into the ground but rather stands upon the ground.
[0077] Bottle opener 34 is located conveniently toward the top of body 10. Fishing is often a pleasure pursuit that may be accompanied by drinking a beer or two while enjoying the outdoors. Including a bottle opener in fishing station 1 removes the need to carry additional equipment. Bottle opener 34 is of a standard form of metal.
[0078] Bait bucket 40 includes lid 42, base 44 and ring 46. Bait bucket 40 is circular in cross-section, with an angle for attachment with hook 28. Flat base 44 is generally circular and keeps the contents from falling out and lid 42 echoes the shape of base 44 and is attached by means of ring 46 so that lid 42 does not get lost. In failing light it is very easy for equipment to be left at the fishing spot as it is not seen. Keeping lid 46 attached assists to prevent loss in poor light, also during transportation and use it is convenient to have lid 42 attached.
specPA2049418
2018282462 21 Dec 2018 [0079] Bait bucket 40 attaches by means of hook 28 on to body 10, the shaping of bait bucket 40 is such that the main part creates a lip with lid 42 which can fit over and securely attach to the hook 28. Other forms of removable attachment may be used instead. In another form of the invention bait bucket 40 may be permanently attached to body 10. However, it is preferable to be able to remove bait bucket 40 for convenient use, cleaning and to add or remove bait. Bait bucket 40 can also be other shapes to suit the styling of the fishing station 1.
[0080] In use, a person or group of people may plan a fishing trip. They may get the fishing gear, rods 17, bucket 23, and bait ready as well as some cold drinks. One or more fishing rods 17 can be put inside body 10 to carry to the fishing spot. Bait bucket 40 can be filled with bait and hooked on hook 28 so as to be carried with the equipment. Bucket 23 may be carried by hand or hooked on hook 22. Bucket 23 is a standard tall bucket, well known in the art as useful to keep water or bait fish. As bucket 23 is empty of water the bucket is light and so may be carried on fishing station 1. Once filled with water bucket 23 will be heavier but can still be safely hooked on hook 22 but may be more difficult to carry and so may wait until ata location. Other items such as knife 19 may be put in knife holder 18. A person can lift the whole apparatus by handle 30 and single-handedly carry the apparatus to a location where it is desired to fish.
[0081] At the location fishing rods 17 can be removed from the hollow centre of body 10 and fishing station 1 positioned for use as a fishing rod stand. Once a suitable position has been chosen pointed end 15 can be pushed into the sand or ground by putting a foot on rest 32 and using a person’s body weight. In this way fishing station is very easily stood up, no particular strength or stature is required as the weight of the body of the person can be used. The angle of installation is generally vertical but can be varied to angle back or forward to suit the situation and how the fishers wish to set their lines.
specPA2049418
2018282462 21 Dec 2018 [0082] Once fishing station 1 is in use as a stand it is time to set up the lines for fishing.
[0083] Lid 42 of bait bucket 40 can very usefully be used as a cutting surface with fishing knife 19 to prepare the bait inside when baiting hooks. After use fishing knife 19 is replaced in knife holder 18 for safe keeping. Once set and cast rods can be stood in fishing station 1, each in one of rod holders 24, 26 or 27 and tensioned. Each rod holder being angled differently and at different heights enables three rods to be installed in the same fishing stand, without tangling the lines. Again rods 17 are all kept close by, set fishing, and ready to quickly take up if a fish appears to have been hooked.
[0084] An open bottle can be placed in top of fishing station 1 and kept upright, and safe during fishing, a further convenience by resting on pushed in cut-outs 20. Bottles placed on the ground would face the real risk of being knocked down, either by a person or by a surging wave or getting lost in the dark. The base of the bottle will get sandy which often will transfer on to other items during the clearing up. Use of the bottle holder keeps the bottle of drink readily accessible and safe from being knocked over. The stable base to the fishing station assists to keep the bottle upright, which would not be possible with a less sturdy or substantial device. Hook has bucket 23 filled with water hung on it at a usual height. Bucket 23 is a tall bucket and hook 22 designed to be able to hold bucket 23 up conveniently. Bucket is useful to keep bait fish for example, or other fish alive and fresh.
[0085] At the end of fishing, the process can be reversed and the fishing rods 17 made ready to transport, and placed inside body 10. Other items can be checked to be in place such that knife 19 has been replaced in knife holder 18. Other items may be rubbish carried together or separately, as desired. The pack up is quick and easy and all the fishing gear can readily be carried back, with a hand free to carry items which could include a cooler for the fish caught for example. Or the fish may be kept in bucket 23 as required.
specPA2049418
2018282462 21 Dec 2018 [0086] Fishing station 1 is made easy to empty and clean with a hose, there are not complex parts or parts that will retain dirt. Overall the inventors have developed a highly desirable product which is likely to be well received with the fishing public on launch.
[0087] Referring to Figure 6, a second preferred embodiment of the invention will be described, similar to the first differing only in the base is used for rough surf or seas or where an even more secure footing is required. Fishing station 101, has body 110, with base 114. As all the features of fishing station 101 are the same as those of fishing station 1, the description will not be repeated here. The features such as rod holders, bait holder, knife holder, hooks, bottle opener and others are all as described for the first embodiment.
[0088] However, base 114 is different as instead of point 15 there are a number of blades 115. Blades 115 are designed so that body 110 of fishing station 101 can be rotated into the sand or other ground to drive in a significant distance. Once blades 115 are driven in strongly by rotation into the ground fishing station 101 is very strongly held in the ground. The distance and the configuration of blades 115 both assist in this regard. Once driven into the ground fishing station 101 is very resistant to movement, for example if in deep water or surf generally the action will push and pull on the base and it could be dislodged. The blades give a strong resistances to the fishing station in the horizontal direction which may be caused by waves, wind or the pull of a strong fish. However, the design enables the strongly installed fishing station to be easily removed by pulling and rotation in the vertical direction. It may be desired to position fishing station 101 at low tide and allow the water to rise with the tide to fish the incoming tide. As the tide recedes fishing station 101 can be recovered. It is extremely beneficial therefore for this form of fishing or in hard ground or otherwise where having the fishing station extremely firmly footed to use the second form of the invention.
specPA2049418
2018282462 21 Dec 2018 [0089] The second form of the invention can be used in the same way as the first to carry the items to the fishing spot and then to be an effective fishing stand and station for cutting bait and hanging items during fishing.
[0090] It will be apparent to a person skilled in the art that changes may be made to the embodiment disclosed herein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention in its various aspects.
