Abstract

Abstract A system and method of extracting data (ie. text and/or image) from an identity card (for example, a user's Driver's Licence) by utilising or incorporating Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and data pattern matching computer algorithms and technology, via a user's mobile (smart) phone (or computer or tablet) for verification of that user's digital identity online for an agent (or even another user) by implementing an automatic digital identity checking process online system or program ("id-checkr").

Claims (1)

  1. Claims A system and method of extracting data (ie. text and/or image) from an identity card (for example, a user’s Driver’s Licence) by utilising or incorporating Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and data matching computer algorithms and technology, via a user’s mobile phone for verification of that user’s digital identity online for an agent (or even another user) by implementing an automatic digital identity checking process online system or program (“id-checkr”) which is plugged into an agent’s transaction website page as an onboard website. An embodiment of the invention is the extraction of data (ie. text and/or image) by the id-checkr from a user’s identity card (eg. Driver’s Licence) in combination with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and data matching computer algorithms and technology, via a user’s mobile (smart) phone (or computer or tablet) and the system’s capability to automatically cross match and/or verify a user’s full name as entered by the user onto a mobile (smart) phone (or computer or tablet) without any manual intervention or review. It is intentional that the id-checkr only crossmatches or verifies a user’s full name in conjunction with the user’s mobile phone number which is a unique identifier in itself (as no other personal details including biometric inputs or details are required) in an attempt to balance the user’s demand for an easy online digital identity verification process or system and with the agent’s requirement for an efficient, inexpensive and reasonably accurate process or system to identify a user online (in order to minimise ‘drop-off rates of users) and ultimately to guard against the threat of identity theft (as desired by agents). Example(s) of how the id-checkr works To use the id-checkr:- Firstly, the id-checkr system/program is plugged into the agent’s transaction website page as an ‘onboard website’ (“id-checkr’s onboard website”). 1.1 The id-checkr will prompt the user for their mobile phone number. [Note. The user’s mobile phone number will be designated as the user’s unique identifier for the id-checkr system/program]. 1.2 If the user has previously used the id-checkr system/program (ie. their mobile phone number is registered/stored on the id-checkr system/program) :- (a) The id-checkr will send by SMS a text to the user’s mobile phone number an id-checkr unique transaction passcode (ie. similar to a four-digit security passcode or PIN) (“Passcode”); (b) the user then enters that Passcode as prompted by the id-checkr’s onboard website (which is plugged into the agent’s transaction website page); (c) if the Passcode is correct, the id-checkr will indicate that the user’s identity has been verified, and subsequently the user may proceed further with the agent’s transaction website page. [However, if the Passcode entered was incorrect, id-checkr will permit the user two (2) further attempts to obtain a Passcode from that agent prior to returning a “failed” signal to the agent’s transaction website page]; (d) [Optional] The id-checkr may also provide the full name of the user directly to the agent’s transaction website page, if required by the agent. The agent’s transaction website page may then independently data match this full name with the name(s) entered onto their transaction website page by the user as an optional/further security measure. 1.3 If the user has not previously used the id-checkr (ie. not registered on the system before) :- (a) The id-checkr will send a unique hyperlink address of id-checkr’s onboard website via an SMS text message to the user’s mobile phone; (b) the user clicks onto the unique hyperlink address of id-checkr’s onboard website showing on their mobile (smart) phone. (Alternatively, if the user does not have a mobile (smart) phone (and especially ones with camera features capability) - the user may manually enter the unique hyperlink address of the id-checkr’s onboard website into any computer or tablet with internet access. [Note. The user is not required to re-enter their mobile number again as it will be already pre-populated into the id-checkr’s onboard website - as the unique hyperlink address is specific to this particular query/transaction]; (c) at the id-checkr’s onboard website - it will amongst other things, prompt the user to firstly enter their first name and then their family/surname name (and in that specific order and) as exactly shown on their identity card (ie. Driver’s Licence) via their mobile (smart) phone (or computer or tablet); (d) at the id-checker’s onboard website - it will then prompt the user to take a photograph of their identity card (ie. Driver’s Licence) via their mobile (smart) phone (or computer or tablet); (e) The id-checker’s system or program will extract the user’s full name from the identity card (ie. Driver’s Licence) by implementing a system combining Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and data pattern matching computer algorithms and technology and to then verify or data match the user’s full name as entered by the user via their mobile (smart) phone (or computer or tablet) with the full name as shown on the identity card (ie. Driver’s Licence); (e) If the full name entered by the user onto their mobile (smart) phone (or computer or tablet) matches the full name as shown on the identity card (ie. Driver’s Licence), the id-checkr will indicate that the user’s identity has been verified, and subsequently the user may proceed further with the agent’s transaction website page, ie. the id-checkr will perform steps 1.2 (a) to (d) above inclusive.
