Abstract

Abstract A liquid formulation contain at least 550 ae g/L of glyphosate, two bases that are complimentary to each other, a surfactant that is compatible to the system and enhances the efficacy of the final product. The system produces a product that is more compatible than straight potassium (K) salt glyphosates and is much less viscous particularly at low temperature than glyphosate containing other bases surfactant combinations.

Description

Description 2017100709 14 Jun2017
Field
The invention relates to liquid herbicide formulations of glyphosate that contain a particular combination of bases that work with a certain category of surfactants to produce high load glyphosates with a relatively low viscosity but are still compatible with other material in tank mixes and water types.
Background
There are many liquid potassium glyphosates in the market mostly at 540 ae g/L which have a low viscosity at low temperatures but because they are single potassium salts are not very compatible with other herbicides in particularly 2,4D, other surfactants and have problems being used in hard water. The incompatibility can result in precipitation from causing nozzle blockages to large lumps in the mixing tank as well as decreasing the efficacy of both the glyphosate and many other products which they cause precipitate in the spray tank.
More compatible commonly used bases like Monoisopropanolamine (MIPA) can only be used at low glyphosate concentrations such as 450 ae g/L as they have a very high viscosity above 500 ae g/L and are extremely viscous above 540 ae g/L. Even when combined with potassium hydroxide as in Argo the viscosity can often be above 600cp at low temperatures especially with certain surfactants. This can cause pumping and handling issues.
This invention even at 550 ae g/L rather the standard 540 ae g/L incorporating the use of potassium hydroxide and monoethanolamine and coupled with the right surfactant blends solves the above issues being much more compatible than the K salt and with excellent viscosity and excellent handling properties at low temperatures.
The inventions were also found to be more efficacious than a typical 540K and 540 ae g/L K/MIPA dual salt formulation in speed of action particularly at lower doses. 1

Claims (2)

  1. Claim The invention claimed is
    1. A stable liquid formulation containing a. Around 550 ae g/L of glyphosate b. Two bases namely Monoethanolamine (MEA) and Potassium Hydroxide 48% (KOH) in a ratio of 40: 60 or 60:40 in a suitable amount to ensure the glyphosate is fully neutralised. c. Suitable compatible surfactants at a range of 90:130g/L either an ethoxylated tallow alkyl amine or a non-ionic surfactant blend. d. An antifoam agent e. A dye f. Water
  2. 2. A stable liquid formulation containing g. Around 450-600 ae g/L of glyphosate h. Two bases namely Monoethanolamine (MEA) and Potassium Hydroxide 48% (KOH) in a ratio of30:70 or70:30 ina suitable amount to ensure the glyphosate is fully neutralised. i. Suitable compatible surfactants at a range of 80:150g/L either an ethoxylated tallow alkyl amine or a non-ionic surfactant blend. j. An antifoam agent k. A dye l. Water Description of the embodiments of the invention In order that the present invention may be clearly understood reference is made to the following examples some of which are preferred embodiments of the present invention. Example 1 Glyphosate technical 95.09% purity, potassium hydroxide (46% in water), Monoethanolamine, surfactant 1 and water with a dye in the ratio 43, 8,15,9 and 24 were combined in a set order to produce a formulation with a density of 1.333. The surfactant was a non-ionic surfactant blend that enhanced the efficacy of the combined glyphosate salts.
Example 2 Glyphosate technical 95.09% purity, potassium hydroxide (46% in water), Monoethanolamine, surfactant 1 and water with a dye in the ratio 43, 8,15, 8 and 25 were combined in a set order to produce a formulation with a density of 1.333. The surfactant was an ethoxylated tallow alkyl amine that enhanced the efficacy of the combined glyphosate salts.
The formulations were found to be stable meeting all AVPMA requirements. Their efficacy was found to be superior to other Glyphosate 540 products on the Australian market. They were found to be compatible particularly when mixed with 24D formulations and only had a viscosity of 75cp at 20°C.
