Abstract

A diversion and isolation tool is releasably connected to a workstring and lowered into a well. The diversion and isolation tool is movable in the well, and serves as a barrier to prevent fluids from mixing and is useful for plugging the well.

Claims (19)

  1. What is claimed is:
    1. A method of plugging a well comprising:
    attaching a diversion and movable isolation tool to a disconnect tool; attaching the disconnect tool to a workstring;
    delivering the diversion and movable isolation tool and disconnect tool to a desired location in the well with the workstring, wherein the diversion and movable isolation tool engages the open well at the desired location;
    disconnecting the diversion and movable isolation tool from the disconnect tool; and pumping cement into the well through the workstring above the diversion and movable isolation tool.
  2. 2. The method of claim 1 further comprising pulling the workstring upwardly in the wellbore as cement is pumped therethrough.
  3. 3. The method of claim 1 further comprising plugging a flow path through the diversion and movable isolation tool prior to the disconnecting step.
  4. 4. The method of claim 3, further comprising circulating a fluid into an annulus between the workstring and wellbore prior to the pumping step.
  5. 5. The method of claim '1, wherein the well comprises a wellbore with a casing therein.
  6. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the well comprises am open wellbore.
  7. 7. The method of claim 1 further comprising plugging flow through the workstring prior to the disconnecting step.
  8. 8. An apparatus for plugging a well, comprising: a diversion and movable isolation tool; and a disconnect tool directly connected to the diversion and movable isolation tool.
  9. 9. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the diversion and movable isolation tool comprises:

    PCT/US2016/032054 a body; and a plurality of stacked segments extending from the body and configured to engage the well at a selected location in the well.
  10. 10. The apparatus of claim 9, the stacked segments defining a flow path therethrough.
  11. 11. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the disconnect tool comprises: a collet; and a releasing sleeve movable relative to the collet.
  12. 12. The apparatus of claim 11, further comprising a dart engagable with the releasing sleeve for moving the releasing sleeve relative to the collet.
  13. 13. The apparatus of claim 8, further comprising a workstring connected to the diversion and movable isolation tool.
  14. 14. A method of plugging a wellbore comprising:
    lowering a diversion and movable isolation tool into a wellbore to a desired location in the well with a workstring;
    disconnecting the diversion and movable isolation tool from the workstring; and forming a cement plug in the wellbore.
  15. 15. The method of claim 14, further comprising: plugging the workstring; and circulating fluid through the workstring prior to the disconnecting step.
  16. 16. The method of claim 15, further comprising forming a cement plug in the well at an additional location above the desired location.
  17. 17. The method of claim 15 wherein the disconnecting step comprises applying an upward pull to the workstring.
  18. 18. The method of claim 14, wherein the diversion and movable isolation tool comprises:
    a body comprising radial flow ports; and
