BACKGROUND OF THE INNOVATION
[0001] The present innovation relates to the accurate measurement of ice skate vertical curvature (Radius), and horizontal curvature, (Bend). The l¾diusand Bend of speed skate blades varies along the skate blade, and are tailored to enable stable cornering.
SUM MAFT/OF INNOVATION
[0002] The technical problem to be addressed is the very fine measurements required to be undertaken along an ice skate blade surface in order to determine the radius, and bend of an ice skate blade. Typical radius and bend curvature can range between a radius of 4m -30m for short-track and long-track speedskating respectively, which when measured over a 100mm length arc rangesfrom 0.313mm to 0.042mm height at the centre of the arc.
[0003] Current hand held measuring devices do not provide reliable or repeatable measurements of sufficient accuracy to determine blade properties.
[0004] TheSblution to the problem as detailed in this innovation isto mount measurement dial gaugesto afabricated measuring device frame containing 2 x measuring guides of a set dimension apart (typically 100mm) that follow along the ice skate blade surface, and a third support guide that rests on the other skate blade to maintain stability. The ice skate blades are fastened in a standard sharpening jig that holdsthe 2 x blades parallel and secure. The measuring device frame follows both ice skate blades, measuring one blade, while resting on the second blade, and thus remains in a stable perpendicular / vertical position in relation to the two blades.
[0005] The advantageous effect of the innovation isthat the measuring device isnot influenced by minor deviations from the vertical or perpendicular plane with respect to the ice skate blade orientation, and the associated inaccuracies of measurement. Also, measurements can be undertaken with a constant pressure on the measurement frame and dial gauge by having the measuring frame rest on the blades, leading to increased accuracy.

Claims (3)

1. A measuring device for the measurement of ice skate blade horizontal and/or vertical curvature, said measuring device being adapted to mount on a pair of ice skate blades secured parallel to each other and utilising the first ice skate blade for measurement, and second ice skate blade for said measurement device support.
2. A measurement device in accordance with Qaim 1 wherein there are two points of contact for measurement guides per measurement axis on the first ice skate blade to be measured, and one point of contact as a support guide to follow the second ice skate blade acting as support.
3. A measurement device in accordance with Qam 2 wherein the measurement gauge isfixed in the same axisasthe horizontal and/or vertical curvature to be measured, with the measurement gauge placed between the measurement guides.
