Description

PROTECTIVE GARMENT FOR MOTORCYCLE JACKET CUFF FIELD OF INVENTION
[0001] Protective garments covering the hand and arms or arms and hands are well know due to numerous reasons for protection in athletics, forearm protectors and grip device in football, basketball, hiking, cycling, skiing, snowboarding and skateboarding hand and wrist guards. Hand and forearm protectors are also used with in certain trades of work for safety requirements and regulations and also for restraints to protect a medical condition.
PRIOR ART US6430744B1 "Forearm chaps" [0002] The prior art consists of a forearm chaps having a sleeve. The forearm chaps is used to cover and protect a proximal portion of a hand and an entire forearm of a motorcycle driver when riding and gripping handlebars of a motorcycle.
[0003] My present invention consists of only a cuff proportion size and not a full forearm sleeve proportion which would be covering the safety features of a motorcycle jacket sleeve, such as vents, slide bars and padding, which in turn would compromise what the jacket was designed to provide.
[0004] My present invention also consists of only covering the wrist bones (carpals) and not any further towards and over the proximal portion of hand as stated with the prior art which compromises the palm features, such as gel pads, of the riders glove and also reducing sensitivity of the throttle control by restricting movement through the wrist region.
[0005] The prior arts closure mechanism is preferably a zipper, although one skilled in the art will also appreciate that the closure mechanism could include, but is not limited to, a button closure, a lacing mechanism, or a Velcro closure.
[0006] My present invention consists of contoured elastic waterproof neoprene cuff which relies on the elasticity of the materials used and of a gripping material disposed on the internal surface to hold the cuff of the motorcycle jacket while maintaining a waterproof arrangement. It also allows a smaller, cleaner look and easier fitting garment compared to the prior art. US 20080109944 A1 "Glove retention and thermal protection device" [0007] The prior art device is worn outside of the glove or mitten and over the jacket sleeve to provide protection from the weather .
[0008] My present invention consists of being worn underneath the glove and over the motorcycle jacket cuff. This method is to stop the weather from entering underneath my present invention as when riding a motorcycle in a forward motion the weather would flow over the glove, onto and over the my present invention and onto and over the jacket sleeve which in turn provides a more suitable warm and waterproof arrangement than prior art in this application as weather will be force under the prior art when on the glove.
[0009] My present invention also allows the user to remove the glove and still keep warm and protected when one needs to access jacket pockets for money or phones etc.
[0010] The prior art also consists of a zipper to fit the art over the jacket which would allow weather to intrude through the teeth of the zipper and also not provide a clean finished look as to my present invention would provide, as described in the previous art "US6430744B1".
[0011] The prior art also consists of a discreet thumb opening in the elongated tube which is fitted over the gloved thumb. Where as my present invention the thumb loop is of a very thin but wide elastic loop, shaped as in a Spica form, that follows the shape above the MCP thumb joint. This doesn't interfere with gripping of the handlebars and provides support to the MCP joint avoiding numbness and pain. US 4856112 A "Powder cuff" [0012] This prior art consists of a tubular sleeve that fits over the jacket sleeve to below the elbow and above the elbow, covering the whole forearm and glove at the wrist. It is then closed using a zipper with a gloved hand to stop weather from entering between the glove and jacket. The tubular portion of over-sleeves is preferably fabricated from pack cloth or waterproof nylon and is insulated with terry cloth attached to surface GOR-TEX material can also be utilized in fabricating the tubular pliable portion of over-sleeves.
[0013] This invention covers the glove which would not provide the protection from the weather whilst riding a motorcycle, as stated in prior art ”US 20080109944 Al", it also doesn't provide a clean finished look and the zipper would also not be water proof .
[0014] The materials used would not be of a streamline quality as to which is highly regarded in motorcycle apparel and the covering of the forearm would also comprise the safety features of the jacket. US 6192519 B1 "Athletic sports pad" [0015] This prior art consists of a tubular sleeve that covers a substantial amount of the user's forearm. It consists of a high friction surface for grip and a loop that sits between the thumb and index finger.
[0016] This art would comprise the safety features of the a motorcycle jacket sleeve, and in an event of a motorcycle fall, the high friction surface covering the forearm would be of high risk of injury to the motorcycle rider as the safety of riding apparel rely of sliding on the road surface. It would also comprise the gripping of the handle bars as to the location of the loop. US 7921470B2 "Sleeve holder" [0017] This prior art consists of holding a rolled sleeve of a shirt/blouse/sweater on the forearm, near the elbow to avoid damage when the individual does certain activities with there hands. My present invention is to hold the position of the cuff of a fully extended sleeve at the wrist when the sleeve is covering the forearm and wrist. US 3 01640A " George E" [0018] This prior art consists of a permanent loop attached to the sleeve cuff of a shirt/blouse/sweater, where the loop is fitted over the thumb to prevent the sleeve from moving up the forearm when fitting a jacket over the shirt sleeve.
[0019] This art is permanently attached to a garment where as my present invention is an individual garment which can be applied to any garment, shirt or jacket with out changing/adjusting/affecting the garment, shirt or jacket and also provides protection from weather from entering the sleeve. US 7200870 B1 "Protective sleeve for the forearm of a wearer" [0020] This prior art is 'worn about the forearm of an individual to protect the forearm, from bites and scratches when handling an animal. This prior art covers the forearm to which my art only cover the wrist and the cuff of the jacket not the forearm which would compromise the safety features of the jacket.
[0021] The prior art also has a thumb insert in the tubular sleeve to where the palm and hand would be covered 'which in turn would compromise the feel and safety of the motorcycle glove.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION
[0022] Many motorcycle jackets range in various sizes and shapes, as too, the wearer's body and limb proportions, thus, making the jacket cuff an incorrect circumference to the wearers wrist and a difference in sleeve lengths. This leaves a gap between the jacket cuff and wrist, and the glove and the jacket cuff, to which allows an ingress of weather and movement to the jacket sleeve causing discomfort and reduced protection for the rider.
[0023] My protective garment is to provide a motorcycle rider protection from weather and to maintain the position of the motorcycle jacket sleeve to ensure it's safety features are correctly positioned whilst riding a motorcycle or in an event of a fall.
[0024] The protective garment consists of a contoured elastic waterproof cuff which fits over the wrist of the rider and over the cuff of the worn motorcycle jacket, before fitting the gloves fastening system over the protective garment where the hand meets the wrist.
[0025] The protective garment has narrow opening to where the hand meets the wrist and narrows further to the riders wrist bone area (carpals), and then tapers to a wider opening to allow for the already worn motorcycle jacket cuff to be compressed onto the wrist and secured with the elasticity of the body of material and a detail of a gripping material disposed on the interior surface.
[0026] The protective garment provides a waterproof barrier around the wrist area, allowing weather to pass over the glove on to and over the protective garment and then over the motorcycle jacket sleeve whilst riding.
[0027] As the protective garment only covers the cuff of the motorcycle jacket it doesn't cover or compromise the features and safety features of the motorcycle jacket sleeve.
[0028] As the protective garment doesn't surpass the wrist and cover the palm of the hand it doesn't affect the features of the riders gloves or the sensitivity of the riders grip of the handle bars.
[0029] The protective garment consists of an elastic loop at the narrow end opening to where the hand meets the wrist. The loop contours around and above the MCP thumb joint in the form of a Spica to ensure the correct placement of the protective garment when fitting gloves.
[0030] The thumb loop is of a thin wide elastic material which provides support to the thumb and reduces numbness as there are less nerves and veins in this portion of the thumb. This wide thin elastic loop allows for a firm grip and controls 'over gripping' of the handle bars which in turn reduces numbness.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS
[0031] FIG.l Is a top view illustration of the components that make the protective garment.
[0032] FIG.2 Is a top view illustration of the components joined that make the protective garment.
[0033] FIG.3 Is a side view illustration of the protective garment.
[0034] FIG.4 Is an illustration of the protective garment positioned on the wrist and worn jacket cuff of the wearer.
[0035] FIG.5 Is an illustration of the glove placed over the protective garment positioned on the wrist and worn jacket cuff whilst the hand in a gripping position.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS
[0036] The protective garment is fitted over the hand through the wide opening D ( FIG .2, FIG.3,FIG .4, FIG.5), and positioned over the wrist 502, been the narrower middle section, and over the cuff 401 of the sleeve 400 of a worn (501 wearer's arm) motorcycle jacket, shirt or sweater. The elastic thumb loop 201 is fitted above the MCP joint (FIG.4,FIG.5 201), the narrow part of the thumb between the two knuckles, with the seam AB running along the inside of the wrist where the thumb meets the wrist.
[0037] This allows the narrow opening C to be positioned where the wrist meets the palm and the back of the hand 101 (FIG.5), to which a glove 500 can be fitted over 101 and fastened around the protective garment at the wrist 502 in the normal fashion a glove is fastened.
[0038] The protective garment 100 is therefore positioned around the cuff 401 of the jacket, shirt or sweater at the wrist 502 with the worn glove fastened over the protective garment 101.
[0039] The protective garment consist of a contoured elastic waterproof neoprene 100 and a loop 201 at the narrow opening C and with a detail of gripping material, say silicon rubber, 300 disposed on the interior surface of the wide opening D of the cuff ( FIG.1, FIG .2,FIG .3, FIG.4, FIG .4, FIG .5) .
[0040] The elastic waterproof neoprene material sheet (FIG.l) 100 of various thickness depending on the individual requirements of maintaining there desired warmth in their weathered climate. The neoprene sheet 100 may consist of different surface layers of either and not limited to nylon, polyester, Jersey, polyamide fabric and Kevlar cloth fabric on either side of the neoprene. The neoprene sheet is of one piece that is sized and shaped around the contoured proportion of where the hand meets the wrist (FIG.5) 101, the wrist 502 and the wrist with a worn jacket, shirt or a sweater cuffed 401.
[0041] One edge A (FIG.l) of shaped neoprene piece is rolled over to the meet edge B (FIG.l) of the neoprene piece to form a seam AB of the contoured elastic waterproof cuff (FIG.2,FIG.3,FIG.4,FIG.5).
[0042] This seam is secured by either sewn or glued or by other means of one that is skilled in the art with a thin wide elastic ribbon/tape 200 to form a elastic waterproof seam, one of which is can be found on wetsuits and dive suits.
[0043] The ribbon/tape runs from one opening D, been the wider, to the other opening C, been the narrow, to which a loop 201 is form by a means of turning the ribbon/tape back on itself in a form of a Spica.
[0044] This elastic loop is of various sizes, depending on the individual's circumference above the MCP joint of the thumb (FIG.4,FIG.5) 201, and is then secured by the means of sewn or glued or by other means, Velcro, of one that is skilled in the art.
[0045] At the wider opening where contoured elastic waterproof cuff fits over the wrist and cuff (FIG.5) 401 of a motorcycle jacket, a detail of a gripping material, say silicon rubber (FIG.1,FIG.2) 300 is disposed on the internal surface of the protective garment to create friction on the cuff and help the elasticity of the neoprene to firmly hold the cuff of the sleeve in position over the wrist 401 (FIG.5 hand in gripping position, say a handle bar 600).
