Abstract
Chair Mounted Optical Posture Sensor [0001] This invention is a chair mounted posture sensor, which allows for the measuring and feedback of the sitting posture of the user..
Description
Chair Mounted Optical Posture Sensor Background [0001] This invention is an modification to chairs which allow posture sensing via distance measurement of one or more locations on the head, neck and back area.
[0002] The goal for posture sensing devices is to reliably, repeatedly obtain the posture of the user with as little error and discomfort to the user as possible. Current posture sensing devices are wearable devices which are usually bulky and uncomfortable to wear. They measure the curvature of the back and neck via the tension of a piece of elastic over the area. They also have limited battery life, needing to be recharged often.
[0003] A alternative to wearable devices is a ultrasonic chair mounted posture sensor, which uses a ultrasonic distance sensor mounted in the headrest area in chairs to measure the distance of the user's head from the back of the chair. This is a reliable method of determining the arch of the back from only one measurement point. However, the ultrasonic sensor produces audible harmonics, which can be annoying and bothersome for the user.
Summary [0004] This invention is a improvement over a ultrasonic chair mounted posture sensor by replacing the ultrasonic distance sensor with a optical one. This removes the annoying harmonics generated and improve the experience for the user.
[0005] This invention is designed to be mounted behind the user's head, although more measurement points or sensors could be added if additional accuracy is required. The optical distance sensor will feed data into a microcontroller which can directly notify the user of their posture via light, vibration, sound or indirectly through their smart phone or computer.
