Description

Description
The purpose of this invention is to make joining 75mm x 50mm (lmm-2.5mm wall thickness), and 150mm x 50mm (lmm-2.5mm wall thickness) steel portal frames easier, and to increase its strength by adding sleeving at various depths to increase the thickness of the frame.
The invention makes construction of these size portal frames quicker and easier than current methods, while adding extra strength at the same time.
The steel portal frame can be cladded to create a shelter, shed, shade shed etc.
By using steel size 70mm x 45mm for sleeving we can create an ideal sleeve that can join 75mm x 50mm steel sections on any angle.
The 70 x 45mm steel sleeving we use is galvanised, non galvanised and hot dip galvanised.
As 70mm x 45mm steel is not available in Australia as a standard steel size, we first need to source a mill that will custom make this size steel.
Method
1. To create an angle sleeve, start by cutting two pieces of steel to the required length of the sleeve. The length of the steel may be determined by an engineer, and will depend on the width and height of the steel frames, and the wind region where it is located. One end of each piece should be cut to the angle required to create the required angle once it is welded together.
2. Weld the two angle cut ends together to create an angled section of steel.
3. Take the two pieces of steel frame on which the sleeve is being used to join together. On the two ends that are to be joined together, cut them on the same angle as the angle cuts on the sleeve section so they correspond with the sleeve.
4. Slide the sleeve inside the two outer frame sections as far as they can go.
5. To secure the sleeves in place, use screws, bolts or weld in place. Our most preferred method is screwing.
To create a gable portal frame comprising two rafters and two columns, repeat this process twice more. The portal frame will have two corner sleeves and one apex sleeve.
To create a skillion portal frame, simply use two columns, one rafter and two angle corner sleeves.

Claims (5)

  1. Claims that Define the Invention
    1) The sleeves are made from 70mm x 45mm steel sections with a wall thickness of 0.6mm - 5mm.
  2. 2) 70 x 45mm steel of any wall thickness is not a standard steel size in Australia and has to be custom made in bulk amounts.
  3. 3) The sleeves can be used to join 75mm x 50mm steel sections with a wall thickness of 1mm - 2.5mm, or can be doubled up to be used as sleeves on 150mm x 50mm steel sections with a wall thickness of 1mm - 2.5mm.
  4. 4) The sleeves can be on any angle from 0 degrees to 179 degrees.
  5. 5) By adding extra sleeving inside a 75mm x 50mm frame, or a 150mm x 50mm frame, extra strength is added to the overall strength of the frame.
