Abstract

- 10 A method of strengthening forge moulded "tee" pieces for polymer pipe work; the method including the provision of a reinforcing collar proximate a junction between a main pipe section and a branch pipe section; the main pipe section formed with an aperture and a raised perimeter around the aperture.

Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN POLYMER PIPING
TECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] The present invention relates to the forge moulding of polymer piping and, more particularly to the production of HDPE "tee" pieces for large diameter pipes.
BACKGROUND
[0002] The process known in the art of forming "tee" pieces for large diameter pipe work in HDPE has included the initial separate forge moulding of the main pipe section and the branch pipe. An aperture is formed in the main pipe and the branch pipe, after suitable shaping, is butt welded to the main pipe.
[0003] Particularly, in the case of the branch pipe being of a reduced diameter compare to that of the main pipe, significant pressures concentrate in the region above the weld and may cause deformation and bursting of the branch pipe.
[0004] It is an object of the present invention to address or at least ameliorate some of the above disadvantages or provide a useful alternative.
Notes [0005] The term "comprising" (and grammatical variations thereof) is used in this specification in the inclusive sense of "having" or "including", and not in the exclusive sense of "consisting only of".
[0006] The above discussion of the prior art in the Background of the invention, is not an admission that any information discussed therein is citable prior art or part of the common general knowledge of persons skilled in the art in any country.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS
[00026] Embodiments of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: [00027] Figure 1 a polymer "tee" piece according to prior art, [00028] Figure 2 is a perspective view of the components for forming a tee piece according to a first embodiment according to the invention, [00029] Figure 3 is a side view of a tee piece formed of the components of Figure 2 after assembly, [00030] Figure 4 is a side view of a tee piece assembly according to a second preferred embodiment of the invention, [00031] Figure 5 is a perspective view of the assembly of Figure 4.
DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS
[00032] Conventionally as shown in Figure 1 (Prior Art) a reducing tee is formed by providing an aperture with a raised perimeter in a main pipe section, then welding the branch pipe to the main pipe at the aperture. It has been found that the region of the branch pipe section above the welded junction is liable to distortion and even failure.
First Preferred Embodiment [00033] With reference to Figure 2 and 3, in a first preferred embodiment of the invention, a "tee" junction 10 is formed of a main pipe section 12, a branch pipe section 14 and a junction piece 16.
[00034] Main pipe section 12 is forge moulded in HDPE or other suitable polymer to include an aperture 18 with a raised perimeter 20. After heating of the main pipe section to approximately 150degrees centigrade, the raised perimeter is formed by drawing a die through the wall of the pipe.
The die is retained in place until the pipe cools to room temperature to prevent the reversion of the forged pipe.
The raised perimeter is then machined to forma level surface suitable for but welding.
[00035] The formed aperture 18 is of a diameter to suit the internal diameter of the branch pipe section 14. The external diameter of the raised perimeter may be equal to the external diameter of the branch pipe section 14 or be larger, for example to give a wall thickness at the aperture equal to the wall thickness of the main pipe section 12.
[00036] The junction piece 16 forms a separate reinforcing section which is machined from forge moulded HDPE or the other suitable polymer material. The junction piece 16 comprises a short section of pipe 22 of internal and external diameters conforming to the diameters of the branch pipe section 14 and includes an integral projecting reinforcing collar 24 of increased external diameter.
[00037] As shown in Figure 3, for assembly, the junction piece 16 is interposed between the perimeter of the aperture in the main pipe section and the branch pipe section. The lower, or first end of the junction piece 16 is butt-welded to the perimeter 20 of the aperture in the main pipe 12, and the branch pipe section 14 likewise butt-welled to upper or second end of the junction piece.
Second Preferred Embodiment [00038] In a second preferred embodiment of the invention, a main pipe section 30 and a branch pipe section 32 are forge moulded as for the first embodiment described above, and the main pipe section 30 again provided with the aperture and raised perimeter around the aperture to suit the branch pipe section 32.
[00039] In this embodiment however, the branch pipe section 32 is directly butt-welded to the perimeter of the aperture of the main pipe section 30. A reinforcing collar 34 is machined, either from a forge moulded billet of HDPE, another suitable polymer or composite material, or from a metallic material. The internal diameter of the collar is sized so as to fit over branch pipe section 32 as a close sliding fit.
[00040] After welding of the branch pipe section 32 to the main pipe section 30, the collar 34 is slid along the branch pipe section 32 to seat in close proximity to the outer surface of the main pipe, just above the butt-welded junction of the branch pipe and main pipe sections. This strengthens the area liable to distortion and rupture just above the weld.
INDUSTRIAL APPLICABILITY
[00041] The present invention provides for HDPE pipe tee pieces capable of handling increased line pressures without the need to increase overall pipe wall thickness.
