Description

A PYLON SIGN TECHNICAL FIELD [0001] The present invention relates to a pylon sign. In particular, the present invention relates to a portable pylon sign that may be used in a variety of different locations. BACKGROUND ART [0002] Pylon signs have long been used as part of a business's advertising strategy to increase traffic to the business. Typically, a pylon sign has a section on which a business's name or logo is displayed, and pylon signs are usually erected in locations where they are visible to passing foot or vehicle traffic (such as on or near the kerb of a road). [0003] Pylon signs are fixed in place by, for instance, being mounted on concrete bases or on legs or poles that are mounted in a concrete footing. This makes the pylon sign stable and sturdy, as well as being able to resist weather conditions such as high winds and the like. [0004] Conventional pylon signs suffer from the drawback that, if a business moves premises, the pylon sign must be removed and relocated to the new place or business, or changed to reflect the new business that takes over the premises. This can be a costly exercise. [0005] In addition, because of the way pylon signs are fixedly mounted in position, the use of pylon signs as temporary installations is very unattractive due to the cost involved. [0006] Thus, there would be an advantage if it were possible to provide a pylon sign that could be easily moved between locations, or that provided a relatively inexpensive short-term advertising option. [0007] It will be clearly understood that, if a prior art publication is referred to herein, this reference does not constitute an admission that the publication forms part of the common general knowledge in the art in Australia or in any other country. SUMMARY OF INVENTION [0008] The present invention is directed to a pylon sign, which may at least partially overcome at least one of the abovementioned disadvantages or provide the consumer with a useful or commercial choice. [0009] With the foregoing in view, the present invention in one form, resides broadly in a pylon sign, the pylon sign comprising an upper portion, the upper portion including one or more electronic display portions, a lower portion from which the upper portion extends, and one or more ground-engaging members extending from the lower portion, the one or more ground engaging members adapted to be located on a ground surface to allow movement of the pylon sign between locations. [0010] The upper portion may be of any suitable size, shape or configuration. It is envisaged, however, that the upper portion may be of sufficient size to ensure that electronic media displayed on the one or more electronic display portions may be readily legible to passers by, whether on foot or in a vehicle. [0011] In some embodiments of the invention, the one or more electronic display portions may constitute the entire upper portion. More preferably, however, the one or more electronic display portions may be at least partially surrounded by one or more frame members. In this embodiment of the invention, the one or more frame members may together form a frame that defines the edges of the upper portion. The frame may be any suitable shape (square, circular, triangular etc.) although in a preferred embodiment of the invention, the frame may be substantially rectangular in shape. In this embodiment of the invention, it is preferred that the long sides of the rectangular frame are positioned substantially vertically, while the short sides are positioned substantially horizontally. [0012] Preferably, the upper portion comprises at least a front surface and a rear surface. In some embodiments of the invention, the one or more electronic display portions may be provided on the front surface of the upper portion only. Alternatively, one or more electronic display portions may be provided on each of the front and rear surfaces. When electronic display portions are provided on both the front and rear surfaces of the upper portion, the electronic display portions may display the same electronic media as one another or different electronic media. [0013] In a preferred embodiment of the invention, one electronic display portion is provided on the front surface of the upper portion. In this embodiment, the electronic display portion may comprise the majority of the front surface of the upper portion. [0014] The one or more electronic display portions may be of any suitable form. Preferably, however, the one or more electronic display portions comprise screens. Any suitable screen may be used, such as, but not limited to, LCD screens, cathodoluminescent screens (e.g. cathode ray tubes, field emission displays, vacuum fluorescent displays, etc.), electroluminescent screens, photoluminescent screens (e.g. plasma display screens) and so on. Most preferably, however, the electronic display portions comprise LED screens. [0015] Any suitable electronic media may be displayed on the electronic display portions. For instance, the electronic display portions may display electronic media in the form of still images, text, moving images or the like, or any suitable combination thereof. In some embodiments, the same electronic media (still image, text, moving image etc.) may be displayed at all times during use of the pylon sign. Alternatively, different electronic media may be displayed during use of the pylon sign. [0016] In embodiments of the invention in which different electronic media is displayed, it is envisaged that the electronic media may be contained in an electronic media file that is displayed on the electronic display portion. Alternatively, the electronic media may be contained within an electronic database and electronic media may be randomly selected from the database for display. In these embodiments, the electronic media file or electronic database may be uploaded to the electronic display portions using any suitable media (CD, DVD, flash drive etc.), or the electronic media file or electronic database may be stored on a computing device (such as a desktop computer, laptop computer, tablet computer, mobile telephone or the like) that is associated with the electronic display portions. [0017] In embodiments of the invention in which a computing device is associated with the electronic display portions, the computing device may be located with the pylon sign. For instance, the computing device may be located on an external surface of, or may be at least partially housed within, the lower portion or the upper portion. The computing device may be temporarily located with the pylon sign, or may be adapted to be retained with the pylon sign at all times. In this embodiment of the invention, the computing device may be electronically connected to the electronic display portions using any suitable technique. For instance, the computing device may be electronically connected to the electronic display portions using a physical connection (such as one or more cables), or may be wirelessly connected to the electronic display portions (for instance, using a WiFi connection, WLAN connection or the like). [0018] In other embodiments, the computing device may be located remotely to the pylon sign. In these embodiments, it is envisaged that the computing device may transmit the electronic media to the electronic display portions using any suitable technique, such as, but not limited to, using a WiFi connection. As well as the electronic media already discussed, it is envisaged that the electronic display portions may display streaming media (such as web pages, television, including internet television, or other live video feeds, and so on). Thus, it is envisaged that, in this embodiment of the invention, the electronic display portions may be provided with one or more receivers adapted to receive the electronic media from the computing device. Any suitable receiver may be provided, such as, but not limited to, one or more WiFi receivers, modems or the like. [0019] The electronic display portions (and computing device, if present) may be powered using any suitable power source. For instance, the pylon sign may be provided with a power source (such as one or more batteries, generators, photovoltaic cells or the like) adapted to provide power to the electronic display portions (and computing device, if present) during use. Alternatively, the pylon sign may be connected to an external power source (such as mains power, a generator or the like) during use. [0020] In some embodiments of the invention, one or more settings relating to the electronic display portions may be adjustable. These settings may include one or more of colour, brightness, contrast or the like. The settings may be adapted to be adjusted on the electronic display portion itself, or may be capable of being adjusted remotely, for instance, using an electronic interface, and particularly an electronic interface accessed via the internet. In this embodiment of the invention, it is envisaged that, along with the settings mentioned previously, a user may be able to adjust additional settings such as the selection of electronic media to be displayed, the scheduling of the display of the electronic media (such as the duration of the display of particular electronic media and/or the order in which particular electronic media is to be displayed etc.). [0021] It is envisaged that the pylon sign may be used outdoors. Thus, it is preferred that at least the upper portion is water and/or weather resistant. This may be achieved by fabricating the frame members of the upper portion from a corrosion resistant material (such as stainless steel, galvanised steel or the like) or the frame members may be coated with a water resistant material (such as a polymeric material, paint or the like) so as to impart corrosion resistance to the upper portion. [0022] In order to provide water resistance (such that the pylon sign may be used in the rain), a seal may be provided between the frame members and the electronic display portions so as to prevent water from entering the interior of the upper portion. Alternatively, the electronic display portions may be covered by one or more cover member in the form of transparent (or at least semi-transparent) members positioned over the electronic display portions so that the electronic display portions are not exposed to the elements. The transparent members may be fabricated from any suitable material, such as, but not limited to, plastic or glass. [0023] The lower portion may be fabricated from the same materials as the upper portion, or may be fabricated from different materials. Similarly, the lower portion may be fabricated so as to be water and/or weather resistant. This may be particularly desirable should a computing device be located within the lower portion. [0024] The lower portion may be of any suitable size or configuration. Preferably, however, the lower portion is sized so as to provide the pylon sign with sufficient stability so that it remains upright and does not move in conditions of high wind, or is bumped or knocked by a person or vehicle. In some embodiments of the invention, the lower portion may comprise a housing in which a computing device may be at least partially housed. Alternatively, the lower portion may simply comprise a base portion from which the upper portion extends. [0025] If desired, the pylon sign (and particularly the lower portion) may be provided with one or more ballast members. The ballast members may be adapted to provide additional weight to the pylon sign so as to prevent movement or overturning of the pylon sign during weather events such as high wind or wind gusts. The ballast members may be of any suitable form and fabricated from any suitable material, although in a preferred embodiment of the invention the ballast members are fabricated from metal (such as steel, lead or the like). [0026] The ballast members may be fixedly or removably attached to the lower portion using any suitable technique. For instance, the ballast members may be welded to the lower portion so that the pylon sign is permanently provided with the additional weight contributed by the ballast members. Alternatively, the ballast members may be attached to the lower portion using fasteners (nuts and bolts, screws, nails, rivets etc.) so that the ballast members may be added or removed as required, or as dictated by weather conditions on a particular day. [0027] In one particular embodiment of the invention, the ballast members comprise metal plates welded to the lower portion of the pylon sign. [0028] When viewed from above, the lower portion may be of any suitable shape. For instance, the lower portion may be circular, square, triangular and the like, and it will be understood that the exact shape of the lower portion is no critical to the invention. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, however, the lower portion is substantially rectangular when viewed from above. [0029] The lower portion may be fabricated as a solid unitary member, or may be fabricated from one or more members connected together to form the lower portion. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the lower portion comprises one or more wall members defining an external surface of the lower portion. In this embodiment, it is envisaged that the one or more wall members may also define a cavity located in the interior of the lower portion. [0030] The upper portion and the lower portion may be formed integrally with one another, or may be formed separately therefrom and adapted for fixed or temporary attachment thereto. The upper and lower portions may be attached to one another using any suitable technique, such as by using one or more fasteners (nuts and bolts, nails, screws, rivets or the like), adhesives and so on. Alternatively, the upper and lower portions may be connected to one another by welding or any other suitable technique. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the lower portion may comprise one or more support members on which the frame of the upper portion and/or the electronic display portions may be located and to which the frame of the upper portion and/or the electronic display portions may be attached. The one or more support members may be of any suitable form, although in a preferred embodiment of the invention the one or more support members may comprise one or more bars, rods, plates or the like. Preferably, the one or more support members extend between wall members of the lower portion. More preferably, the one or more support members extend between opposed wall members of the lower portion. [0031] The lower portion may be provided with one or more display portions. The display portions may be of any suitable size, shape or configuration, and may include electronic display portions similar to those provided in the upper portion. Alternatively, the display portions may simply comprise a section of the outer surface of the lower member on which indicia is displayed. Any suitable indicia may be displayed, such as, but not limited to, one or more images, symbols, text or the like, although it is envisaged that the indicia may include the name and/or logo of the company or business using the pylon sign for advertising purposes. [0032] The indicia may be displayed on the display portions using any suitable technique. For instance, the indicia may be painted onto the display portions, or may be in the form of a sign (such as an adhesive sign) applied thereto. [0033] In other embodiments of the invention, the display portion may include a removable display member adapted to be located in position on an external surface of the lower portion. The removable display member may be located directly on the external surface of the lower portion, or may be adapted to be at least partially received and retained within a recess or opening in the external surface of the lower portion. In this embodiment of the invention, the removable display member may, when located in position, form part of the external surface of the lower portion. [0034] The removable display member may be fabricated from any suitable material. However, in one embodiment of the invention, the removable display member may be fabricated from a transparent (or at least semi-transparent) material, such as plastic, glass or the like on which the indicia is placed. In this embodiment of the invention, one or more light sources may be located within the recess or cavity in which the removable display member is at least partially received. The one or more light sources may be of any suitable form, although in a preferred embodiment of the invention, the one or more light sources may comprise one or more light bulbs (LEDs, fluorescent tubes, compact fluorescent lamps, incandescent light bulbs, halogen lamps or the like, or any suitable combination thereof). It is envisaged that, on actuation of the one or more light sources, the removable display member will be backlit, thus increasing the visibility of the indicia. [0035] The one or more light sources may be powered using any suitable power source, and it is envisaged that the power source for the one or more light sources may be the same as that for the electronic display portions. [0036] The one or more ground-engaging members may be of any suitable form. Preferably, however, the one or more ground-engaging members allow the pylon sign to be moved between locations, thereby providing the pylon sign with portability. It is envisaged that, in use, the one or more ground-engaging members are located in abutment with a ground surface and do not penetrate the ground surface. [0037] As previously stated, the ground-engaging members extend from the lower portion. While the ground-engaging members could extend from any suitable part of the lower portion, it is envisaged that the ground-engaging members extend from a lower surface of the lower portion. The ground-engaging members may be any suitable members that allow for movement of the pylon sign between locations, and may comprise one or more wheels, castors, endless tracks, rollers, slides or the like, or any suitable combination thereof. Thus, it is envisaged that the pylon sign of the present invention is adapted to be portable. [0038] In some embodiments, the pylon sign may be moved between locations manually by a user pushing or pulling the pylon sign towards a desired location. Alternatively, the pylon sign 0 may be provided with a motor adapted to drive the ground-engaging members. Thus, in this embodiment of the invention, movement of the pylon sign may be achieved using a remote control, steering wheel or similar control device. [0039] The pylon sign may further comprise one or more height adjustment members. It is envisaged that the height adjustment members may be adapted to raise or lower the pylon sign relative to the ground surface. In a preferred embodiment of the invention a plurality of height adjustment members are provided. [0040] It is envisaged, in embodiments of the invention in which a plurality of height adjustment members are provided, that each of the height adjustment members may be adjusted independently of the other height adjustment members. Thus, different height adjustment members may be adjusted to different heights so that the pylon sign may be used on an uneven ground surface. [0041] While any suitable number of height adjustment members may be provided, it is envisaged, in embodiments of the invention in which the lower portion is rectangular when viewed from above, that a height adjustment member may be located at or adjacent each corner of the lower portion. By providing a height adjustment member at each corner of the lower portion, the pylon sign can be used even on uneven ground. [0042] The height adjustment members may be of any suitable form. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, however, the height adjustment members comprise elongate leg members that extend from the lower portion of the pylon sign. [0043] In some embodiments of the invention, the height adjustment members may comprise telescoping members. Alternatively, the height adjustment members may be moveable between a storage condition in which at least a portion of the height adjustment members are received within a cavity or recess within the lower portion and a plurality of use conditions in which the at least a portion of the height adjustment members extend outwardly from the lower portion to engage a ground surface. [0044] Movement of the height adjustment members between the storage condition and a use condition may be achieved using any suitable technique. For instance, the movement of the height adjustment members may be achieved automatically (for example, using a motor, ram or the like to drive movement of the height adjustment members). Preferably, however, movement of the height adjustment members may be achieved manually. In this embodiment of the invention, the height adjustment members may be in the form of winding jacks. [0045] Although both the ground-engaging members and the height adjustment members may be in contact with the ground surface at the same time, it is preferred that, when the height adjustment members are in the use condition, the ground-engaging members are supported above the ground surface. In this way, unwanted or accidental movement of the pylon sign may be avoided. Thus, it is envisaged that, during use, the height adjustment members will be extended from the lower portion to a greater distance than that at which the ground-engaging members extend from the lower portion. Alternatively, the ground-engaging members may be adapted to be withdrawn closer to, or within, the lower portion when not in use. [0046] The pylon sign may further comprise one or more lifting members adapted to allow the pylon sign to be lifted, for instance by a crane or hoist. In this way, the pylon sign can be lifted onto a truck or to some other elevated position for transport or display. Any suitable lifting members may be provided, such as, but not limited to, one or more lugs, hooks or the like, or a combination thereof. The lifting members may be provided at any suitable location on the pylon sign, although in a preferred embodiment of the invention, the lifting members may be provided on the upper portion, and specifically in an upper region of the upper portion. [0047] As previously stated, the pylon sign may be of any suitable size. However, it is envisaged that the pylon sign may be up to about 5 metres in height. More preferably, the pylon sign may be up to about 4 metres in height. In a specific embodiment, the pylon sign may be about 3 metres in height. [0048] The electronic display portion may also be of any suitable size. However, it is preferred that the electronic display portion may be up to about 3 metres in height. More preferably, the electronic display portion may be up to about 2 metres in height. [0049] As mentioned previously, it is desirable that the pylon sign be of sufficient weight to prevent it from moving or overturning in strong wind. Thus, it is envisaged that the pylon sign may be up to about 500kg in weight. More preferably, the pylon sign may be up to about 1000kg in weight. Most preferably, the pylon sign may be up to about 1500kg by weight. [0050] In some embodiments of the invention, the pylon sign may be provided with one or more locating devices. The locating devices may be of any suitable form, although it is envisaged that the locating devices may be adapted to allow the location of the pylon sign to be determined by the owner and/or operator of the pylon sign.
IV1~ [0051] In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the one or more locating devices may comprise GPS locating devices. Any suitable GPS locating device may be used, although it is preferred that the GPS locating devices may be adapted to transmit a signal (preferably, a signal containing information regarding the location, and particularly the geographic location, of the pylon sign) to one or more receiving devices. The receiving devices may be of any suitable form, and may include one or more computing devices, such as laptop computers, desktop computers, tablet computers, mobile telephones or the like. In some embodiments of the invention, the signal may be received as an email message, text message, or as an indication on an electronic mapping program. Preferably, the one or more receiving devices are located remotely to the pylon sign. In this embodiment, the signal may be transmitted wirelessly using any suitable technique. [0052] The GPS locating devices may continually transmit a signal regarding the location of the pylon sign. Alternatively, the GPS locating devices may transmit a signal intermittently, for instance at certain times of the day, or at certain time intervals. In other embodiments of the invention, the GPS locating devices may transmit a signal when the pylon sign is removed from a particular geographic area in which it is being used. For instance, if the pylon sign is moved a particular distance from where it is intended to be used (for instance, outside a particular radius from its intended location), a signal may be transmitted to alert the owner and/or operator that the pylon sign has been moved. In this way, if unauthorised use of the pylon sign is being made, or if the pylon sign has been stolen, the owner and/or operator may be receive a notification and may take steps to rectify the situation. [0053] The GPS locating device may be located at any suitable point on the pylon sign. For instance, the GPS locating device may be located on an external surface of the pylon sign, or may be located internally in the pylon sign (for instance, in the interior of the lower portion). The GPS locating device may draw power from the same power source as the electronic display portions, or may draw power from a different power source. Preferably, the GPS locating device may be associated with its own power source (such as a battery or the like) so that, if the pylon sign is disconnected from mains power or a generator etc., the GPS locating device may continue to function and transmit a signal. [0054] The pylon sign provides numerous significant advantages over conventional pylon signs. Firstly, the pylon sign of the present invention can be moved from location to location, meaning that the pylon sign can be used for a range of different applications. For instance, the pylon sign can be used at trade shows (where it will only remain for a short period of time), for temporary advertising purposes (such as sales), indoors or outdoors, special events (store openings, promotional events, open days, sporting events and the like). Further, the ability to adjust the height adjustment members independently of one another means that the pylon sign may be used on any ground surface, including uneven ground. [0055] Any of the features described herein can be combined in any combination with any one or more of the other features described herein within the scope of the invention. [0056] The reference to any prior art in this specification is not, and should not be taken as an acknowledgement or any form of suggestion that the prior art forms part of the common general knowledge. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS [0057] Preferred features, embodiments and variations of the invention may be discerned from the following Detailed Description which provides sufficient information for those skilled in the art to perform the invention. The Detailed Description is not to be regarded as limiting the scope of the preceding Summary of the Invention in any way. The Detailed Description will make reference to a number of drawings as follows: [0058] Figure 1 illustrates a front view of a pylon sign according to an embodiment of the present invention. [0059] Figure 2 illustrates a front view of a pylon sign according to an embodiment of the present invention. [0060] Figure 3 illustrates a front view of a pylon sign according to an embodiment of the present invention. DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS [0061] In Figure 1 there is illustrated a front view of a pylon sign 10 according to an embodiment of the present invention. The pylon sign comprises an upper portion 11, a lower portion 12 and ground-engaging members in the form of castors 13. [0062] The upper portion 11 comprises a frame 14 surrounding an electronic display portion in the form of a screen 15 on which electronic media in the form of text 16 is displayed. [0063] The upper portion 11 extends from, and is connected to, the lower portion 12 which I / is of sufficient size and weight to provide the pylon sign 10 with stability even in conditions of high wind or sudden wind gusts. [0064] In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figure 1, the pylon sign 10 is shown while in use, meaning that the pylon sign 10 has been transported to its desired location. When in use, a plurality of height adjustment members in the form of legs 17 are extended from the lower portion 12 into a use condition to contact a ground surface. When the legs 17 are extended 17, the castors 13 are supported away from the ground surface so that unwanted or accidental movement of the pylon sign 10 cannot occur. [0065] In Figure 1 it may be seen that the lower portion 12 includes a display portion 18 on which indicia in the form of a logo 19 is displayed. [0066] In Figure 2 there is illustrated a front view of a pylon sign 10 according to an embodiment of the invention. In this Figure, the pylon sign 10 is shown with the legs 17 in the storage condition in which they are almost fully received within the lower portion 12. When the legs 17 are in the storage condition, the castors 13 are in contact with the ground surface 20, meaning that the pylon sign 10 may be moved between locations by rolling the pylon sign 10 along the ground surface 20 on the castors 13. Thus, when the legs 17 are in the storage condition, the pylon sign 10 is portable. [0067] It may be more clearly seen in Figure 2 that the display portion 18 is of a different construction to the remainder of the lower portion 12. Specifically, the display portion 18 is fabricated from a translucent acrylic material adapted to allow light from the light sources (not shown) housed inside the lower portion 12 to pass through the display portion 18, improving the visibility of the indicia (not shown in this Figure) displayed thereon. The display portion 18 may be removed from the lower portion 12 if desired so as to be replaced with a display portion 18 bearing different indicia, or to allow access to the interior of the lower portion 12 (for instance to replace light bulbs that are not working). [0068] The screen 15 is retained in place in the pylon sign 10 through a connection to a support member 21 of the lower portion 12. The screen 15 is mounted to mounts 22 that are connected to the support member 21 by bolts (not shown). [0069] In Figure 2, it may also be seen that the upper portion 11 comprises a pair of lifting members in the form of lugs 23. The lugs 23 allow the pylon sign 10 to be lifted by a crane or hoist onto, for instance, a truck for transportation between locations, or to an elevated position (for instance, a stage, platform or the like). [0070] In Figure 3, a front view of a pylon sign 10 according to an embodiment of the present invention is illustrated. The pylon sign 10 of Figure 3 is very similar to those illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, although some of the additional features of the pylon sign are visible in Figure 3. [0071] For instance, of the pylon sign 10 shown in Figure 3 has a number of ballast members in the form of steel plates 24 welded to an upper surface of the lower portion 12, as well as within the lower portion 12. In the case of the steel plates 24 within the lower portion 12, the steel plates 24 are welded to an upper surface of a frame member 25, with the castors 13 connected to a lower surface of the same frame member 25. [0072] In Figure 3, the legs 17 are shown in the use condition, meaning that they are extended from the lower portion 12 into contact with the ground surface 20. In this condition, the castors 13 are supported above and away from the ground surface 20 so that accidental or unwanted rolling movement of the pylon sign 10 is precluded. [0073] The legs 17 are provided in the form of winding jacks, and to move the legs 17 between the storage condition and the use condition, a user must wind a jack handle 26 to extend or retract the legs 17. Each leg 17 is adapted for adjustment independent of the other legs 17, meaning that the legs 17 may be extended different lengths from the lower portion 12 to one another. By providing the legs 17 with the ability to be adjusted independently of one another, the pylon sign may be placed on any ground surface, whether even or uneven. [0074] In the present specification and claims (if any), the word 'comprising' and its derivatives including 'comprises' and 'comprise' include each of the stated integers but does not exclude the inclusion of one or more further integers. [0075] Reference throughout this specification to 'one embodiment' or 'an embodiment' means that a particular feature, structure, or characteristic described in connection with the embodiment is included in at least one embodiment of the present invention. Thus, the appearance of the phrases 'in one embodiment' or 'in an embodiment' in various places throughout this specification are not necessarily all referring to the same embodiment.
