Abstract

Abstract On container and other maritime vessels personnel are required from time to time to walk or perform work on the top of containers. There is frequently a gap between containers which constitutes a trip or fall hazard to workers who may be required to move across the container tops from container to container. The present invention describes a lightweight and moveable magnetically anchored bridging gangway to bridge such gaps and to allow personnel to pass across in safety. As the steel panels of such containers frequently have distortions and dents a flexible magnet mounting arrangement assists in ensuring maximised magnetic clamping to secure the walkway. Items C are switchable permanent magnets such as Magswitch 70 Magsquare mounted to the device preferably in a flexible and adjustable manner. Item or Items D are fixed or retractable wheel or wheels to facilitate easy movement of the device along a surface.

Claims

1. A moveable bridging gangway comprising a single or joined side by side lengths of preferably but not limited to Lysaght interlock 11 pressed steel and having handrails of height to meet Australian and International Standards attached fixedly or removably to each side.

2. A moveable bridging gangway as described in Claim 1 and having attached at one or both ends at least one magnet being switchable permanent magnet or other permanent or electromagnet such that its magnetised surface is the lowest point of the entire device and so as to enable the device to be clamped magnetically to a steel surface.

3. A moveable bridging gangway as described in Claims 1 and 2 and having the said at least one magnets mounted somewhat flexibly to the bridging gangway device to allow a small movement in the attitude of the magnet so as to accommodate irregularities in the surface to which it clamps.

A moveable bridging gangway as described in Claims 1 to 3 and having the said at least one magnets mounted both flexibly as in Claim 3 and adjustably in a vertical or horizontal or both directions with respect to the bridging gangway device to provide adaptation of the device to different situations.

5. A moveable bridging gangway as described in Claims 1 to 3 and having a wheel or wheels mounted in a fixed or adjustable or retractable manner at one or both ends and disposed so as to engage with a surface only when the opposite end of the walkway is lifted and so as not to impede the contact of the magnet element with the surface when the walkway is horizontal.
