Description

AUSTRALIA Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATION PATENT Improved Saddle Assembly The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me 1 Title of the Invention Improved Saddle Assembly Field of the Invention The present invention relates to an improved saddle assembly, particularly suitable 5 for horse riders. Background of the Invention Horse riding is popular as a recreational as well as a professional sport. Horse riders need to be comfortable when riding the horse. Additionally, the horse must be calm and not put under undue pain or discomfort during riding. Prior to riding, the horse is .0 usually fitted with a saddle to enable a comfortable ride for both the rider and the horse. The key factors which are normally considered when fitting a saddle to ensure comfort include the structure of the saddle, the position of the saddle on the back, the contact of the panels against the horse's back, whether the panels are wide i5 enough for good support whether the gullet is wide enough to clear the spine completely, the placement of the girth and the levelness of the seat the position of the stirrup bars and how the rider fits in the seat. While there are numerous designs of saddles in the marketplace, each saddle must be customised to ensure comfort to both the rider and the horse. 20 The customised designing of the saddle increases the cost of the saddle and results in delay for the rider in obtaining a suitable saddle to ride on. Thus, there is a need for a saddle which does not require customised fitting. 1 Summary of the Invention The present invention provides a saddle assembly comprising: (i) a single piece main frame consisting of moulded carbon fibre or fibreglass; (ii) a pad attached to the reverse side of the main frame; and 5 (iii) a bar portion which is not substantially raised to allow close contact with the horse's back. Preferably, the main frame is attached to the pad by adjustable fastening means. Preferably, the main frame may be custom ised to display a design. .o Preferably, the design is selected from a group consisting of a country's national flag; a logo; team colours and stud name. Preferably, the main frame comprises a channel portion extending from below a front portion to near a seat portion. .s Brief Description of the drawings Figure 1 illustrates the saddle assembly as an embodiment of the present invention. Figure 2 illustrates the attachment of the pads to the main frame as an embodiment of the present invention Figure 3 illustrates the frontal view of the saddle assembly as an embodiment of the 20 present invention. Detailed Description of the invention 2 The present invention relates to an improved saddle assembly, particularly suitable for horse riders. The present invention provides a saddle assembly comprising: (i) a single piece main frame consisting of moulded carbon fibre or fibreglass; 5 (ii) a pad attached to the reverse side of the main frame; and (iii) a bar portion which is not substantially raised. The main frame of the saddle preferably comprises a single piece of moulded carbon fibre. Carbon fibre material provides strength and flexibility of the saddle frame, whilst ensuring that the saddle remains lightweight. Carbon fibre saddles are easy to .o maintain and clean. Wooden trees have very little lateral flexion and prone to breaking. Plastic trees typically have no suspension and can hurt the horse's back. Traditional saddles comprise leather attachments which are difficult to maintain and clean compared to the carbon fibre saddle. Furthermore, the one piece design decreases cost whilst still .s providing comfort to both the rider and the horse. Figure 1 shows a saddle as an embodiment of the present invention. The main frame (1) comprises the cantle (2), pommel or swell (3), a channel portion (4) and bar (5). The bar member (5) of the main frame (1) is attached to the pad member (6) by fastening means (7). The fastening means (7) includes adhesive material such as 20 glue and Velcro@. The fastening means (7) allows the pad to be adjustable and enables fitting to any horse. By moving the pads closer or further apart the rider may adjust the gullet size of the saddle. The pad member (6) comprises material such as memory foam. In one embodiment, the pads (6) are fitted along both sides of the saddle. 3 The bar member (5) is configured such that it is not raised to allow close contact with the horse's back and fits the horse's contour. This configuration of the memory foam pads fitted to the bar on the underside of the saddle eliminates direct contact with the spine of the horse while still ensuring close contact with the horse for the rider. 5 The main frame (1) comprises a channel portion (4) extending from below a front portion (8) to near an edge of a seat portion, forming the rear portion (9) of the channel. In one embodiment the channel portion is oval shaped and about 18 cm long and about 7.5 cm wide at centre of the channel. The main frame (1) comprises a base or seat portion as the saddle. There is no .o separate tree member, as is common is traditionally designed saddles. The main frame (1) is made from material such as carbon fibre or fibreglass and is substantially hollow. The saddle assembly may be designed in two sizes, preferable big and small. The slits (10, 11 and 12) allow fitting of girth straps (13) and stirrups. .s In another embodiment, the present invention provides a saddle assembly wherein the main frame may be custom ised to display a design. The design may be selected from a group consisting of a country's national flag; a logo; team colours and stud name and the like. Figures 2 and 3 show further embodiments of the present invention. 20 In another embodiment, the present invention provides a saddle assembly further comprising attachments for securing items such as a water bottle holder, mobile phone holder and accessories, keys, clothes such as coats and jackets, etc. 4 The attachments may be fitted to the main frame by tread inserts, for example.
