Description

A METHOD TO MEASURE BODY SIZE OF WATERFOWL BY USING
PHOTOS
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to the measurement of body size for poultry, and more specially relates to the technique of measuring the body size of waterfowl such as duck and goose.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR ART
Body size measurement is an important part of poultry breeding, since body size not only represents individual meat and egg productivity to a certain extent, but also is an important mark of different varieties. The current measuring method, according to the professional standard "Terms of Poultry Productivity and Method of Measurement and Statistics" issued in 2004, uses slide calipers and tapes in measurement and takes the unit of centimeter and the value rounded up to one decimal place. However, this method sometimes causes inaccuracy of measurement due to difficult fixing and hypoderm slide in the course of live body size measurement, and further causes great differences between different fixing methods and different time. Moreover, traditional waterfowl body size measurement is hard to do for every individual waterfowl due to great working strength, and is apt to reduce the productivity of measured group due to great excitement. Therefore, to develop a more accurate and rapid method is the basis for poultry body size breeding.
With the ripening of photo collecting technology and its application in farms in recent years, it is feasible to provide photos of individual fowls in every period of growth and production to show clearly every measuring node of fowl body size, such as front and rear ends of keel and upper end of tibia, which provides necessary technical support for body size measurement of individual fowl. The measurement of chest depth, keel length, tibia length, chest width and pelvis width of water fowl is to obtain the slant distance between two points of body size, which provides theoretical basis for the photo measurement of waterfowl body size. Objectiveness Under such circumstances, the development of the method to measure waterfowl body size by using photos cannot only solve the problems of nonobjective measurement, large labor input and liable stress, but also improve the efficiency and range of body size measurement and provide better method and tools for waterfowl breeding.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Accordingly, the present invention has been keeping in mind the above problems occurring in the related art, and a first object of the present invention is to provide a method to measure body size of waterfowl by using photos. This method is characterized by objectivity, precision, repeatability, less stress, less labor intensity and less application invest.
To realize the object, the present invention takes the following technical schemes: A method of measuring waterfowl body size by using photos comprises the following steps: 1) Step of photo scale calibration: measuring the actual length of reference object with known length in side view and top view of individual fowl body size by using measuring devices and dividing the measured length of the photos, thus obtaining the calibrating rates of each photo; 2) Step of the measurement of body size in photos: measuring the distances from first thoracic vertebra to front edge of keel, front end of keel to end of keel, upper joint of tibia to the position between the 3rd and 4th toes in side view of waterfowl by using measuring devices, measuring the diameter of middle tibia and lineback length in the photo by using a substitution line, obtaining the photo measuring values of chest depth, keel length, tibia length, diameter of middle tibia and back length of the individual body size; also measuring the distances from the left end of shoulder joint to the right end of shoulder joint and from the left end of haunch to the right end of haunch in top view of the water fowl individual waterfowl, and obtaining the photo measuring values of chest width and pelvis width of individual waterfowl, thus completing the steps of measuring body sizes in the photos; 3) Step of conversion between photo measuring values and actual measuring values: the photo measuring values of chest depth, keel length, tibia length, back length, chest width and pelvis width of body size multiplying the calibrating rates to obtain the actual measuring values of six body size measurement items of chest depth, keel length, tibia length, back length, chest width and pelvis width, and the actual photo measuring values of the diameter of middle tibia multiplies the circular constant and further multiplying the calibrating rates to obtain the actual measuring values of individual tibia circumference.
Preferably, the photo calibrating rate in the said step 1) is the actual length of reference object divided by photo measuring length in the following equation:
Photo calibrating rate = the actual value of the length of reference object , photo measuring value of the length of reference object.
Preferably, the side view in the said step 1) is a photo that is taken at the orthogonally left side of waterfowl body and includes the reference object with its length vertical to the ground surface, while the top view in the said step 1) is a photo that is taken over the central line of upper back of waterfowl body and includes the reference object with its length parallel to the ground surface.
By adopting the above-mentioned technical scheme, the present invention can be used to obtain the following beneficial effects: 1. Better objectivity of waterfowl body size data: the measurement of waterfowl body size by using photos can avoid the diversity of measuring result caused by cognizance at different measuring points; 2. Economization of labor source: one person can complete the work of waterfowl body size measurement by photo measuring in one day that needs more than ten persons to fulfill such work in former way; 3. More precise result of body size measurement: after adopting photo measurement, every body size measurement will no longer be imprecise due to difficult fixing and hypoderm slide in the course of live body size measurement; 4. Reduce or avoid stress: by using photo measurement of body size, any stress caused by contact between waterfowl and people can be avoided, thus remaining or improving colonial fertility; 5. Body size measuring efficiency greatly improved with photo collecting equipment: the body size measurement formerly requiring several days can be completed in short time by the method of photo measurement that can communicate with current measuring information technology.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS A method of measuring waterfowl body size by using photos, mainly comprises three steps: photo scale calibration, photo body size measurement, and the conversion between measuring value of body size photo and actual measuring value. The main character of said method is the step of photo scale calibration, including: measuring the actual lengths of known reference object 5 in Fig. 1, Fig. 2, Fig. 3 and Fig. 4 using measuring devices, and obtaining the calibrating rate of each photo with the measuring values divided by each measured length in relevant photos; the step of photo body size measurement includes: measuring in order the distance from first thoracic vertebra 1 to front edge of keel 7, the distance from front end of keel 6 to keel end 4, and the distance from upper joint of tibia 3 to position between the 3rd and 4th toes 9 using measuring devices, measuring diameter of middle tibia 8 and the length of measuring track of lineback 2 in the figures with a substitution line and obtaining the photo measuring values of chest depth, keel length, tibia length, diameter of middle tibia and back length of individual waterfowl; further measuring both distances from left end of shoulder joint 12 to right end of shoulder joint 10 and from left end of haunch 13 to right end of haunch 11 in top view Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 using measuring devices and obtaining the photo measuring values of chest width and pelvis width of individual waterfowl, thus completing the step of photo body size measurement; the step of the conversion between measuring value of body size photo and actual measuring value includes: obtaining actual measuring values of six body size items of chest depth, keel length, tibia length, back length, chest width and pelvis width of individual waterfowl by using the photo measuring values of chest depth, keel length, tibia length, back length, chest width and pelvis width of individual waterfowl multiplied by calibrating rate, and obtaining the actual measuring value of tibia circumference of individual body size by using the photo measuring value of the diameter of middle tibia multiplying circular constant Pi and the calibrating rate.
The photo calibrating rate is the actual value of the length of reference object divided by photo measuring value, and its equation is: _. ... . the actual value of the length of reference object ...
Photo calibrating rate = —-:----— ---—— (1) photo measuring value of the length of reference object
The equation of conversion between photo measuring value and actual measuring value of chest depth, keel length, tibia length, back length, chest width and pelvis width of individual body size is:
Actual measuring value of individual body size = photo measuring value of individual body size · calibrating rate (2)
The equation of conversion between photo measuring value and actual measuring value of tibia circumference for individual body size is:
Actual measuring value of tibia circumference for individual body size = photo measuring value of the diameter of middle tibia circumference for individual body size · p · calibrating rate (3)
Now we take Taihu goose and Shaoxing sheldrake for specific embodiment to further describe the present invention.
