Abstract

Embodiments of the invention can include systems and methods for dispensing consumable products. One embodiment of the invention can provide a product dispenser. The product dispenser can include an ingredient matric operable to receive a plurality of product ingredients. In additional, the product dispenser can include a controller in communication with the ingredient matrix, and operable to execute a set of instructions to receive product data associated with the plurality of product ingredients. Moreover, the controller can further comprise a set of instructions to track usage of the plurality of product ingredients when at least one product is dispensed. Furthermore, the controller can further comprise a set of instructions to update the product data during or after dispensing of a product or installation of one or more product ingredients in the ingredient matrix. To create a finite variety of beverage selections different kinds of syrup can be offered. This typically results in being able to offer a finite number of 25 branded and non-branded beverage selections. As such, conventional beverage dispensers may be limited in being able to offer the consumer what they want. In this regard, consumers want a wider menu of beverage selections and the ability to customize their beverage. They may not offer the consumer what 5 the consumer wants, that is, a complete variety of choices for all types of branded and non-branded beverages. Each product dispenser 102A-N can be a computer or processor based device capable of communicating with the communications network 104 via a signal, such as a wireless frequency signal or a direct wired communication signal. 5 100301 Each product dispenser, such as 102A, can include a processor or controller 106, an identification reader / scanner device 106A, an ingredient matrix 108, a computer-readable medium, such as a random access memory (RAM) 110, coupled to the processor or controller 106, and an input/output device, such as display device 112. Computer executable program instructions stored in memory, such as 110, can include any number of module application programs, such as a consumer interaction engine or module, such as 114. For example, a product ingredient package, such as I16A, 7 can be manufactured as a pouch of liquid secured in a plastic ridged container to allow insertion into an ingredient matrix, such as 108. When inserted into the ingredient matrix, such as 108, the package, such as 116A, or pouch can be pierced by at least one associated fitting which allows the liquid in the package, such as I1 6A, or pouch to be 5 pumped or otherwise metered by the controller, such as 106, or the matrix, such as 108, and associated equipment in precise ratios to form the desired product, such as a beverage. In one embodiment, one or more product ingredient packages, such as 116A 116Q, can be inserted into an ingredient matrix, such as 108. The ingredient matrix 108 in this embodiment can secure some or all of the product ingredient packages, such as 10 116A-1 16Q. In one embodiment, one or more product packages, such as 1160, 116P, 116Q may be direct supplies rather than packages. For example, a product package, such as 1160, can be a continuous supply of carbonated water provided from a carbonated water source; a product package, such as 11 6P, can be a sweetener provided from a sweetener source such as a non-nutritive sweetener (NNS) or high fructose corn syrup 15 (HFCS); and a product package, such as 1 16Q, can be a continuous supply of water from a tap, purified, or distilled water source. In any embodiment, ingredients, components, or product additives may be in the form of a pouch, or may be in another configuration suitable for access by the ingredient matrix, such as 108. [00331 In the embodiment shown in Figure 1, a product dispenser, such as 102A, 20 with an ingredient matrix, such as 108, can include one or more machine readable code readers, such as I18A-I 18Q, utilizing a machine readable code technology such as bar code, .RFID, reflected light frequency, optical, etc. In one embodiment, at least one machine readable code reader, such as 118A- 11 8Q, can be associated with a location associated with an ingredient matrix, such as 108, wherein some or all of the product 25 ingredient packages, such as 116A- 116Q, can be scanned, read, or otherwise identified prior to insertion into or connection with the ingredient matrix, such as 108. In this regard, the processor or controller, such as 106, can receive or obtain information related to some or all of the product ingredient packages, such as I 16A-I 16Q, and use such information to identify within the ingredient matrix, such as 108, an optimum or other 30 desired location within the ingredient matrix, such as 108, for placement of the product ingredient package, such as II 6A. For example, data from a product ingredient package, such as I 16A, can be read, scan, or identified from a serial number or identification code 8 associated with the product ingredient package, such as 11 6A. Such data can be utilized alone or correlated with previously stored information in at least one database, such as 128A-128C, described below, or with data otherwise accessible or stored by a data processing resource or server, described below, such as 126, which may identify one or 5 more ingredients associated with the product ingredient package, such as 1 16A. In another example, data from a product ingredient package, such as 116A, can be a ingredient code or identifier, and can be utilized alone or correlated with previously stored information in a database, such as 128A-128C, or with data otherwise accessible or stored by a data processing resource or server, such as 126, which may identify one or 10 more ingredients associated with the product ingredient package, such as 1 16A. [0034] In the embodiment shown in Figure 1, a product dispenser, such as 102A, with an ingredient matrix, such as 108, can include one or more pumps and/or valves, such as 120 and 122 respectively, and a nozzle, such as 124. In this example, each of the pumps, such as 120, and valves, such as 122, can be controlled by the product dispenser, 15 such as 102A. For instance, the processor or controller, such as 106, can be in communication with some or all of the pumps, such as 120, and valves, such as 122. In this regard, some or all of the pumps, such as 120, and/or valves, such as 122, can be selectively operated by the processor or controller, such as 106, to pump, meter, or otherwise obtain respective product products or ingredients from certain of the product 20 ingredient packages, such as I1 6A-1 16Q, to dispense a custom product or beverage. [0035] In one embodiment, an ingredient matrix, such as 108, can have multiple product ingredient packages, such as 1 16A-1 16Q, inserted into it, wherein each package may contain a different or unique ingredient. By way of one or more commands or instructions from a processor or controller, such as 106, to one or more pumps, such as 25 120 and/or valves, such as 122, associated with the ingredient matrix, such as 108, varying ratios of ingredients from some or all of the product ingredient packages, such as 116A- I16Q, can be selectively combined to form various types of products, such as beverages. Example ingredients can include, but are not limited to, a flavoring, a concentrate, a syrup, a sweetener, water, carbonated water, a lime flavoring, vanilla 30 flavoring, cherry flavoring, and any ingredient part of a branded or non-branded drink, 9 such as CHERRY COCA-COLATM, VANILLA COCA-COLATM, COCA-COLATM, DIET COCA-COLATM, and FANTATM. t00361 In one embodiment, one or more of the product ingredient packages, such as 116A- l16Q, may contain ingredients referred to as "pungent", which may limit their 5 placement within an ingredient matrix, such as 108. Pungent-type ingredients can be relatively strong such that once a pungent ingredient is pumped or otherwise drawn through a particular portion of a product dispenser, such as 102A, any associated path through the dispenser, such as 102A, such as tubing in the product dispenser, such as 102A, may be permanently flavored and any subsequent ingredient or fluid that is 10 pumped or drawn through the path or tubing may be tainted with the taste of the pungent-type ingredient. As such, once a pungent-type ingredient is used in an ingredient matrix, such as 108, an associated processor or controller, such as 106, can track or otherwise store information that controls or limits the replacement and/or addition of other pungent ingredients to certain locations of the ingredient matrix, such 15 as 108, to avoid mixing pungent-type ingredients or tainting non-pungent ingredients in order to maintain product or beverage quality. 100371 In another embodiment, one or more product ingredient packages, such as I 1 6A- 116Q, may require agitation to keep the associated ingredient sufficiently mixed. In such instances, the location of such ingredients in an ingredient matrix, such as 108, 20 can be limited to locations within the ingredient matrix, such as 108, that can be agitated as may be required and/or desired in a particular embodiment. In the embodiment shown, a processor or controller, such as 106 in Figure 1, associated with 30 the product dispenser, such as 102A, can transmit the ingredient data records, including any changes to the physical ingredient matrix ingredient allocation, to a local and/or 38 remote server or data processing resource, such as 126, for storage and retrieval. For example, data communication can include data communicating percentage of consumed and/or remaining ingredients in the ingredient matrix, and/or other types and/or kinds of data as may be required and/or desired in a particular embodiment. 5 [00114] Block 1110 is followed by block 1112, in which results are optionally written to a data processing device associated with the ingredient packaging. For example, a data processing device can include, but is not limited to, a RFID tag, and/or other types and/or kinds of data processing devices, as may be required and/or desired in a particular embodiment. In one embodiment, writing to a data processing device that is associated with the ingredient packaging can be advantageous in that as the ingredient packaging is moved to other product dispensers, the data related 15 to the ingredients volumes and/or quantities consumed and/or remaining can be transferred as well as data in the data processing device. In operation, the data processing device can be read, adjusted by processing beverage consumption data records, and written back to the data processing device. In block 1202, a product dispenser communicates locally and/or remotely with a data processing resource. In the embodiment shown, a processor or controller, such as 106 in Figure 1, associated with the product dispenser, such as 102A, can communicate via a network, such as 104, with a local and/or remote server or data processing resource, such 30 as 126. For example, data communication can include, but is not limited to, a check to 39 see if a more recent version of the recipe/formula database is available for download from the data processing resource to the product dispenser. [001181 Block 1202 is followed by block 1204, in which a determination is made as to whether there is a recipe/formula database update available. If the determination is in the 5 affirmative, that is, there is an update available, then method 1200 continues at block 1206. If the determination is in the negative, that is, there is not an update available, then the method 1200 ends. In the embodiment shown, a processor or controller, such as 106 in Figure 1, associated with the product dispenser, such as 102A, can compare a current version with the version of the recipe/formula database that may be available for 10 download from the data processing resource, such as 126. In one embodiment, a local and/or remote server or data processing resource, such as 126, can compare a current version with the version of the recipe/formula database that may be available for download. In any instance, a determination is made as to whether there is a recipe/formula database update available. 15 [00119] In block 1206, the more recent version of the recipe/formula is communicated from the data processing resource to the product dispenser. In the embodiment shown, a data processing resource, such as 126 in Figure 1, can transmit via a network, such as 104, a more recent version of the recipe/formula to a product dispenser, such as 102A. A processor or controller, such as 106, associated with the product dispenser, such as 102A, 20 can receive the updated version of the recipe/formula database. [00120] Block 1206 is followed by block 1208, in which the product dispenser recipe/formula database is updated. In the embodiment shown, a processor or controller, such as 106 in Figure 1, associated with the product dispenser, such as 102A, can store or otherwise install the updated version of the recipe/formula database received from the 25 data processing resource, such as 126, in an associated memory or data storage device, such as 110. Periodically, the recipe/formula database can be compared to a 30 version of a database in a product dispenser. If the version of the database in the product 40 dispenser needs to be updated, then the recipe/formula database can be communicated from the data processing resource to the product dispenser, [00123] The capabilities of various embodiments can be implemented in software, 5 firmware, hardware or some combination thereof. [00124] As one example, one or more embodiments can be included in an article of manufacture (e.g., one or more computer program products) having, for instance, computer usable media. The media has embodied therein, for instance, computer 10 readable program code means for providing and facilitating the capabilities of the embodiment. The article of manufacture can be included as a part of a computer system or sold separately. One example of a suitable article of manufacture is a consumer interaction engine or module, such as 1 14 described in Figure I. 15 [00125] Additionally, at least one program storage device readable by a machine, tangibly embodying at least one program or set of instructions executable by the machine to perform the capabilities of the embodiment can be provided. Claims (15)

1. A method for operating a beverage dispenser, comprising: receiving, at an ingredient matrix, a plurality of beverage forming ingredient packages comprising respective beverage ingredients; generating, at a controller associated with the beverage dispenser, a beverage composition data record comprising data indicative of quantity of each beverage ingredient dispensed in a beverage that is formulated via the ingredient matrix and dispensed at the beverage dispenser; receiving, at the controller, beverage data associated with the respective beverage ingredients in the plurality of beverage forming ingredient packages and comprising data indicative of previously generated beverage composition data records; and tracking, at the controller, usage of the respective beverage ingredients in the plurality of beverage forming ingredient packages in a virtual ingredient matrix based at least in part on one or more of the beverage composition data records or the data indicative of the previously generated beverage composition data records, the virtual ingredient matrix comprises data representative of the ingredient matrix.
2. The method of claim 1, wherein the tracking comprises monitoring at least one of usage volume of a beverage ingredient in the plurality of beverage forming ingredient packages, usage quantity of the beverage ingredient, or usage rate of the beverage ingredient.
3. The method of claim 1 or 2, further comprising: determining a depletion rate for at least one beverage ingredient of the plurality of beverage forming ingredient packages based at least in part on the product data.
4. The method of claim 1, 2 or 3, further comprising: determining when to order one or more of the respective beverage ingredients in the plurality of beverage forming ingredient packages based at least in part on the beverage data. 42
5. The method of any one of the preceding claims, further comprising: determining an optimized ingredient matrix based at least in part on the beverage data.
6. The method of claim 5, wherein determining an optimized ingredient matrix based at least in part on the beverage data comprises determining a depletion rate for at least one beverage ingredient of the plurality of beverage forming ingredient packages based at least in part on the product data.
7. A method for managing a product dispenser, the method comprising: generating, at a controller associated with the beverage dispenser, a beverage composition data record comprising data indicative of quantity of each beverage ingredient dispensed in a beverage that is formulated via an ingredient matrix and dispensed at the beverage dispenser; receiving, at the controller, beverage data associated with a plurality of beverage forming ingredient packages installed within the ingredient matrix, the beverage data comprising the beverage composition record; tracking, at the controller, usage of the plurality of beverage forming ingredient packages in one or more of the beverage composition data record, wherein one or more beverage ingredient quantities in the beverage composition data record are depleted per usage of the plurality of beverage forming ingredient packages; determining, at the controller, a depletion rate for at least one beverage ingredient in the plurality of beverage forming ingredient packages; estimating, at the controller, complete depletion of the at least one beverage ingredient based at least on the depletion rate; and transmitting an order for a depleted beverage ingredient via a network.
8. The method of claim 7, wherein the determining comprises determining the depletion rate based at least in part on one of usage volume of a beverage ingredient in the plurality of beverage forming ingredient packages, usage quantity of the beverage 43 ingredient, usage rate of the beverage ingredient, usage volume of a virtual beverage ingredient, usage quantity of the virtual beverage ingredient, or usage rate of the virtual beverage ingredient.
9. The method of claim 7 or 8, wherein the transmitting comprises at least one of sending the order prior to when the beverage ingredient or virtual beverage ingredient is depleted, or sending the order at a predetermined time prior to an estimated time of depletion of the beverage ingredient or the virtual beverage ingredient.
10. The method of any one of claims 1 to 9, wherein the receiving beverage data comprises reading machine readable information associated with a beverage forming ingredient package containing at least one beverage ingredient.
11. The method of any one of claims 1 to 10, wherein the tracking comprises: generating a virtual ingredient matrix based at least in part on respective beverage ingredients in the plurality of beverage forming ingredient packages within the ingredient matrix; and updating the virtual ingredient matrix during or after at least one beverage is dispensed based at least in part on the beverage data.
12. A system for managing beverage ingredients, the system comprising: an ingredient matrix operable to receive a plurality of beverage forming ingredient packages, wherein the ingredient matrix comprises one or more machine readable code readers operable to identify the plurality of beverage forming ingredient packages installed within the ingredient matrix; and a controller in communication with the ingredient matrix, and operable to execute a set of instructions that, in response to execution, cause the controller to: generate a beverage composition data record comprising data indicative of quantity of each beverage ingredient and carbonated water that are dispensed in a beverage that is formulated via the ingredient matrix; 44 receive beverage data associated with the plurality of beverage forming ingredient packages installed within the ingredient matrix and comprising previously generated beverage composition data records; track usage of the plurality of beverage forming ingredient packages in the beverage composition data record when at least one product is dispensed, wherein one or more beverage ingredient quantities in the beverage composition data record are depleted per usage of the plurality of beverage forming ingredient packages; determine a depletion rate for at least one beverage ingredient in the plurality of beverage forming ingredient packages; estimate complete depletion of the at least one beverage ingredient based at least on the depletion rate; and transmit an order for a depleted beverage ingredient via a network.
13. The system of claim 12, wherein the controller is further operable to execute a set of instructions that, in response to execution, cause the controller to: generate a virtual ingredient matrix based at least in part on the plurality of beverage forming ingredient packages within the ingredient matrix; and update the virtual ingredient matrix during or after at least one beverage is dispensed based at least in part on the beverage data.
14. The method of any one of claims 7 to 9, wherein the tracking further comprises tracking the usage of the plurality of beverage forming ingredient packages in a previously generated beverage composition record.
15. A system comprising means for performing the method of any one of claims 1 to 11 and 14.
