Abstract

A method of enriching atmospheric carbon dioxide (C02) in a protected cropping facility for the purpose of enhancing the growth of plants therein, said method comprising the steps of: * Constructing nearby to a protected cropping facility a membrane air separation unit where the membranes were designed to be selective for C02; * Using fans to move atmospheric air through such air separation unit into the protected cropping facility such that the C02 concentration in the atmosphere within such facility was increased from approximately 400 parts per million (ppm) to between 800ppm and 1,200ppm being the appropriate level to enhance the growth rates of the plants being grown in such facility.

BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION (02) In recent years there has been an expansion of interest and knowledge in the use of C02 to enhance the growth rates of plants being grown in protected cropping facilities including transparent greenhouses and artificially lit vegetable factories. (03) Plant growth rates in such facilities can be improved by as much as 30% by introducing enriched atmospheric C02 into such facilities such that the C02 concentration therein increases from an ambient level of approximately 400 parts per million (ppm) to a level between 800ppm and 1,200ppm. (04) Typically such C02 has been introduced into the atmosphere within protected cropping facilities either via bottled C02 purchased from chemical companies or via C02 in flue gases generated by gas fed boilers located near to or within such protected cropping facilities. (05) In recent years there has also been an expansion of knowledge and interest in using membrane gas separation technology to separate and concentrate from air flows or flue gases, selected gases such as oxygen, nitrogen or C02. (06) Such membrane separation technologies can be improved via incorporation into such membranes, materials known as Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) which can be designed to enhance the membrane's selectivity for gasses such as C02. (07) MOFs are crystalline compounds consisting of metal ions or clusters coordinated to often rigid organic molecules to form one-, two-, or three-dimensional structures that can be porous. In some cases, the pores can be used for the storage of gases such as methane and C02. (08) Most air separation membrane technology uses significant quantities of energy as the objective is to push large volumes of air through the membranes so as to generate a high concentration of the target gas such as nitrogen, oxygen or C02.
3 (09) For the protected cropping industry, where the objective is not to develop a highly concentrated stream of C02 but rather simply to move the C02 concentration in the atmosphere within the protected cropping facility, from approximately 400ppm to a level between 800ppm and 1,200ppm, there is the opportunity to develop membrane air separation units to be located adjacent to the protected cropping facility which are far less expensive to construct and operate than those typically designed to generate highly concentrated gases for industrial purposes. (10) The low capital cost and operating cost of such membrane air separation units for C02 enrichment of atmosphere for protected cropping facilities could generate C02 for that application at lower cost than the traditional sources of C02 which were discussed above. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION (11) According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of enriching atmospheric C02 in a protected cropping facility for the purpose of enhancing the growth of plants therein, by: a. Constructing a membrane air separation unit adjacent to a protected cropping facility where such unit was designed to be selective for C02 ; and b. Using fans to move atmospheric air through such membrane air separation unit into the protected cropping facility such that the atmospheric concentration within the protected cropping facility was increased from approximately 400ppm to a level between 800ppm and 1,200ppm; (12) According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of enriching atmospheric C02 in a protected cropping facility for the purpose of enhancing the growth of plants therein, by: a. Constructing a membrane air separation unit adjacent to a protected cropping facility where such unit was designed to be selective for C02 by harnessing the use of C02 selective Metal Organic Frameworks into the membrane ;and b. Using fans to move atmospheric air through such membrane air separation unit into the protected cropping facility such that the atmospheric concentration within the protected cropping facility was increased from approximately 400ppm to a level between 800ppm and 1,200ppm;
