Description

1 A BASKET FIELD [0001] The present invention relates to baskets and more particularly but not exclusively to baskets formed of flexible sheet material such as plastics and cardboard. BACKGROUND [0002] Packaging for confectionary takes many configurations. For example it is very common for confectionary to be distributed in flexible packaging such as bags. In other instances more rigid containers are used such as cartons and boxes. [0003] In respect of the abovementioned methods of packaging confectionary, there is not available a packaging in which the packaging can be "reused" so as to receive a different product than the product originally presented in the packaging. OBJECT OF THE INVENTION [0004] It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate the above disadvantage. SUMMARY OF INVENTION [0005] There is disclosed herein a basket including: a hollow body providing a cavity to receive product to be carried by the basket, the body having a bottom wall, a first pair of side walls between which the cavity is located, a second pair of side walls also between which the cavity is located, with the second pair of side walls extending between the first pair of side walls, and wherein the side walls extend upwardly from the bottom wall; a lid attached to the first or second pair of side walls and including a first lid portion and a second lid portion, each lid portion extending from a respective one of the pair of side walls to which the lid is attached, with the lid portions being movable angularly in opposite directions between a closed position and an open position with respect to said cavity, with at least one of the lid portions providing a handle; and wherein 2 said body and lid are formed from a sheet of flexible sheet material having lines about which the sheet material is folded to form the bottom wall, side walls and lid. [0006] Preferably, each lid portion has a handle. [0007] Preferably, one of the lid portions includes a tongue that extends to engage the other lid portion when the lid portions are in the closed position to aid in retaining the lid portions in the closed position. [0008] Preferably, the basket includes at least one divider extending between the first pair of walls or the second pair of walls, dividing said cavity into compartments to receive product. [0009] In a further preferred form, the basket includes a plurality of dividers, the dividers extending between both pairs of walls, dividing said cavity into a plurality of compartments to receive product. [00010] Preferably, said sheet material is cardboard. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS [0010] Preferred forms of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: [0011] Figure 1 is a schematic isometric view of a basket having a closed lid; [0012] Figure 2 is a schematic isometric view of the basket of Figure 1 with the lid in an open position; [0013] Figure 3 is a further schematic isometric view of the basket of Figure 1 with the lid in a still further open position; [0014] Figure 4 is a schematic view of a blank employed to form the basket of Figure 1; [0015] Figure 5 is a schematic plan view of a blank employed to form a divider employed in the basket of Figure 1; 3 [0016] Figure 6 is a schematic plan view of a further blank employed in the basket of Figure 1. DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS [0017] In the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted a basket 10. The basket 10 would be formed from sheet material such as plastics or cardboard. [0018] In this embodiment the basket 10 includes a hollow body 11. The body 11 includes a bottom wall 12, a first pair of side walls 13 and 14, and a second pair of side walls 15 and 16. The side walls 13 to 16 extend upwardly from the bottom wall 12, which in combination with the bottom wall 12 generally surround a cavity 17 to receive product to be carried by the basket 10. [0019] The basket 10 is also provided with a lid 18, with the lid 18 including a first lid portion 19 and a second lid portion 20, with the lid portions 19 and 20 cooperating to close the cavity 17. [0020] The lid portions 19 and 20 are angularly movable about axes 21 and 22 between an open position and a closed position. The closed position is shown in Figure 1, the open position or at least a partly open position, is shown in Figures 2 and 3. The axes 21 and 22 are preferably parallel. Preferably, the side walls 13 and 14 diverge upwardly from the bottom wall 12, while the side walls 15 and 16 also diverge upwardly from the bottom wall 12. [0021] Each lid portion 19 and 20 provides a handle 23 or 24 which is gripped by a user to lift the basket 10. The handles 23 and 24 may also aid in moving the lid portions 19 and 20 angularly between the open and closed positions thereof. [0022] Located in the cavity 17 is a plurality of first dividers 25 that are generally parallel but transversely spaced. A further divider 26 extends generally perpendicular to the dividers 25 so as to divide the cavity 17 into a plurality of compartments 27 that receive product. [0023] In Figure 4 there is schematically depicted a blank 28 that is folded to form the body 11 and lid 18. The blank 28 is provided with a plurality of lines of weakness (fold lines) so that the blank 28 is divided into a plurality of panels. The panels 29 and 30 engage to provide the 4 bottom wall 12, while the panels 31 and 32 provide the side walls 13 and 14. The panels 33 and 34 provide the side walls 15 and 16. [0024] Preferably smaller panels 35 and 36 are also provided to engage with the panels 29 and 30 so as to provide the bottom wall 12. Preferably adhesive 37 is applied to the panels 35 and 36 so that the panels 29, 30, 35 and 36 are secured together. [0025] Preferably the lines of weakness would be formed by creases or cuts in the material forming the blank 28. The lid 18, that is the lid portions 19 and 20, include panels 40 and 41 which provide the main elements that close the cavity 17. However attached to panels 40 and 41 are the handles 23 and 24. [0026] Attached to the panels 40 and 41 are panels 38 and 39, as well as panels 42 to 45. [0027] In one configuration the panels 38 and 39, and 42 to 45 are positioned below the panels 40 and 41. This configuration is best understood with reference to Figure 1 where the panels 38 and 39, and 42 to 45 are not visible. However the lid portions 19 and 20 may be pivoted to at least a partly open configuration so that the panels 38 and 39 are splayed outwardly, as shown in Figure 2. The panels 38 and 39 are supported by the panels 42 to 45. Accordingly the basket 10 can be arranged in two configurations, that is a configuration as shown in Figures 1 and 3, or a configuration as shown in Figure 2 with the panels 38 and 39 splayed outwardly. [0028] There is preferably provided panels 46 and 47, to which an adhesive 48 is applied, to engage the panels 34 and 41 to secure the panels 31 and 42 thereto. [0029] Figure 5 illustrates the divider 25. The divider 25 is formed from a single piece of sheet material such as plastics or cardboard, and is provided with lines of weakness (fold lines) that may be in the form of a crease or cuts. The divider 25 has four panels 49 to 52, with the panels 50 and 51 abutting each other (and upwardly oriented) when the divider 25 is in position in the body 11. The panels 49 and 52 would abut the internal surface of the bottom wall 12. The divider 25 has slots 53.
5 [0030] The divider 26 is illustrated in Figure 6. The divider 26 would be formed from a single piece of sheet material such as cardboard or plastics, and would be provided with lines of weakness (fold lines) in the form of cuts or creases. The lines of weakness divide the divider 26 into panels 54 to 58. The panels 54 and 55 would abut, and the panels 57 and 58 abut when the divider 26 is located internally of the body 11. The panels 54, 55, 57 and 58 would be upwardly oriented. The longitudinal central slot 59, and the end slots 60 provide for engagement with the divider 25. The slots 59 and 60 would be upwardly extending (open) when assembled and spaced from the bottom wall 11, while the slots 53 would be downwardly extending (open) and adjacent the bottom wall 11. [0031] Preferably one of the lid portions 19 or 20 would have a "tongue 61" that engages below the other lid portion 19 or 20 when the lid portions 19 or 20 are in the closed position to aid in retaining the lid portions 19 and 20 in the closed position as shown in Figure 1. [0032] As best seen in the drawings, when in the closed position the handle 23 and 24 abut so that a user may grip both handles with one hand. [0033] As best seen in Figures 2 and 3 the panels 42 to 45, each extend between their respective adjacent panels. For example the panel 42 extends between the panels 38 and 41, the panel 43 extends between the panels 38 and 40, the panel 44 extends between the panels 39 and 40, and the panel 45 extends between the panels 39 and 41. The panels 42 to 45, when the handles 23 and 24 are moved to open the lid portions 19 and 20, the panels 38 and 39 are caused to move to an open position. Once in the open position, the panels 38 and 39 can be moved to the splayed out position diverging upwardly. [0034] With reference to Figure 1, the axes 21 and 22 are provided by lines of weakness (fold lines) between the panels 33 and 40, and 34 and 41. [0035] The above described preferred embodiment has the advantages of providing a basket 10 that can be used to contain a variety of confectionary items, and maybe reused once a first set of confectionary items have been consumed.
