Description

H:\tw\Interwoven\NRPortb\DCC\TW\60846411. DOCX-24/10/2011 INFORMATION CARD Background of the Invention [0001] The present invention relates to an information card and in one example to a business card having a multiple layer structure. Description of the Prior Art [0002] The reference in this specification to any prior publication (or information derived from it), or to any matter which is known, is not, and should not be taken as an acknowledgment or admission or any form of suggestion that the prior publication (or information derived from it) or known matter forms part of the common general knowledge in the field of endeavour to which this specification relates. [0003] Business cards are used as a mechanism for exchanging information, such as contact details. This is often used when individuals first meet, as a way of exchanging contact details, thereby allowing individuals to stay in touch. From a marketing perspective, the impact of a business card, and in particular, the likelihood of the card, and hence the provider, being remembered can be critical. Consequently providing a business card that is distinctive is of significant benefit. [0004] Once received, business cards are typically discarded or stored in a card file. Once filed they rarely act as a sales prompt or marketing tool. [0005] It is known to provide business cards with removable labels. For example, US 2,321,184 describes a business card including a label, having a central portion which is provided with printed matter describing a firm, a visitor, a product, or service, as well as two side portions which are easily separable from the main portion. The two side portions are coated with an adhesive and are utilized to connect the label firmly with the card or pamphlet. However, these are visually unappealing and hence perform poorly from a marketing perspective, meaning they haven't gained widespread acceptance. [0006] Nor is there widespread acceptance of currently available repositionable business cards. This is not due to their difficult to remove backing sheet, but due to what appears to be H:\tw\Interwoven\NRPortb\DCC\TW\6084641_1.DOCX-24/10/201 1 -2 an innate desire for recipients to ensure their business card file is as complete as possible. So repositionable or other adhesive business cards end up in the recipients business card file, not attached to a wall, desk, phone, whiteboard or file where they are visible for sufficient time to greatly enhance a memory of the provider. Summary of the Present Invention [0007] An information card including: a) a base layer having a first base surface displaying base information; b) a removable label layer having a first label surface displaying label information and a second self adhering label surface, wherein in use: i) the second label surface can be adhered to the first base surface so that the information card appears to be a single body; and, ii) the label layer can be removed from the base layer and removably adhered to a surface so that the label information is viewable separate from the base information. [0008] Typically the first and second information include contact details. [0009] Typically the label layer is at least partially transparent at least some of the base and label information are substantially identical and at least partially aligned. [0010] Typically the label layer is made of a polyester micro suction paper or card with a repositionable adhesive backing. [0011] Typically the base layer and label layer have a substantially similar shape, and wherein the base layer includes a cut-away so that the label layer defines a tab to facilitate removal of the label layer. Brief Description of the Drawings [0012] An example of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: [0013] Figure 1A is a schematic front view of an example of an information card; [0014] Figure 1B is a schematic top view of the information card of Figure 1A.
H:\tw\Interwoven\NRPortb1\DCC\TW\6084641 1.DOCX-24/10/201 1 -3 [0015] Figure 2A is a schematic front view of a second example of an information card; [0016] Figure 2B is a schematic front view of the information card of Figure 2A with the base and label layer separated; and, [0017] Figure 2C is a schematic front view of the information card of Figure 2A with a semi transparent upper sheet and offset information on the lower sheet which creates the impression of a drop shadow. Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments [0018] An example of an information card will now be described with reference to Figure 1A and 1B. [0019] In this example, the information card 100 includes a base layer 110 having a first base surface 111 displaying base information and a removable label layer 120 having a first label surface 121 displaying label information and a second self adhering label surface 122. In use the second label surface 122 can be adhered to the first base surface 111 so that the information card appears to be a single body and the label layer 120 can be removed from the base layer 110 and removably adhered to a surface so that the label information is viewable separate from the base information. [0020] Thus, by virtue of the second layer 120 being self adhering, it can be applied to other surfaces, enabling the label layer to adhere to a smooth surface, such as painted walls, brochures, desks or glass, or the like. This allows the label information to be retained in a convenient location, whilst the base layer and corresponding base information can be stored, for example in the manner a recipient would normally store an information card. This ensures a recipient can continue to store information cards as they would normally, whilst further storing information adhered to a surface, thereby increasing the chance that the information thereon will be used, and hence maximising the effectiveness of the card. Despite this, the card presents the appearance of a single body, which could be a unitary or multi-layered body. Thus, it provides a significant novelty factor, when it is demonstrated to the recipient that the base and label layers can be separated, whilst still allowing the card to be handled as a single entity as required. Thus, the information card provides novel and H:\tw\Interwoven\NRPortb\DCC\TW\6084641_1.DOCX-24/10/201 1 -4 attention grabbing item to the receiver ensuring the receiver will better remember the provider. [0021] A number of further features will now be described with reference to Figures 2A to 2C. In this example, the information card has a similar structure and accordingly similar features are referred to using similar reference numbers increased by 100. [0022] In this example, the first and second information 214, 224 include at least contact details 214.2, 224.2, with additionally information also being optionally provided, such as a logo 214.1, 224.1. It will be appreciated however, that contact details and logos are not the only type of information that could be presented and reference to these is not intended to be limiting, although is preferred when the card 200 is being used as a business card. It will be appreciated that in this example, the use of contact details in both the first and second information allows the base layer 110 to function as a standard business card, to be used in the same manner as existing business cards, whilst the label layer 120 acts as a secondary business card. [0023] Typically the label layer is at least partially transparent and at least some of the base and label information are substantially identical and at least partially aligned. In this configuration, with the base and label layers 210, 220 aligned, the business card provides the appearance of a single layered card containing a single set of information, as shown in Figure 2A. However, the base and label layers 210, 220 can be separated thereby providing two cards with substantially the same appearance, as shown in Figure 2B. This increases the novelty value of the card, thereby maximising the chance that a recipient will remember the card and hence the card provider. [0024] However, this is not essential, and alternatively the first and second information could be different, or alternatively could be similar or complementary and arranged in a visually unique manner. For example, the first and second information could be identical but offset slightly to thereby provide the visual appearance of a shadow, as shown in Figure 2C. It will also be appreciated however, that the first and second information can be different. [0025] The first and second information 214, 224 can be arranged to provide blank space 214.3, 224.3 on the first surface of either the base layer 210 or the label layer 220, thereby H:\tw\Interwoven\NRPortb\DCC\TW\6084641_1.DOCX-24/10/201 1 -5 allowing a user to write notes on either the base or label layer 210, 220. In this regard, writing on the label layer 220 allows this to be subsequently adhered to a surface, allowing this to function in a manner similar to a Post-itTM note, thereby maximising the cards impact. [0026] Typically, the base layer and label layer have a substantially similar shape to thereby further visual appeal of business card. However, the base layer 210 can includes a cut-away 213 corner or arc so that the label layer defines a tab 223 to facilitate removal of the label layer 220. [0027] The base layer 110, 210 is typically manufactured from standard card, such as a 220 [tm thick paper based card. However, this is not essential, and any suitable material can be used. [0028] In one example, the label layer 120, 220 is made of a polyester micro suction paper, such as Phototex or Yupo Octopus , printable polyester sheets that removably stick to flat surfaces and which are endlessly reusable. In this regard, if the adhesive surface becomes dusty or greasy it can be cleaned with water, making this particularly beneficial as it provide a label layer 120, 220 that can be repeatably re-applied to surfaces, without loss of adhering properties, and without leaving a sticky adhesive residue once removed. This maximises the effectiveness of the label layer 220 as a marketing tool. [0029] In one example, label layer has a thickness of 180 [am, which gives us a combined card thickness of around 400 [tm, sufficient thickness to add a sense of solidity and substance to the provider in the mind of many recipients. However, it will be appreciated that other arrangements can be used. For example, the label layer 120, 220 can be made of 188 [m card onto which a 12[tm composite laminate layer is placed, with three layers including a permanent adhesive layer to bind the laminate to the card, a plastic film and a repositionable adhesive, forming the second surface 122 of the label layer. [0030] The first and second information can be provided onto the layers 210, 220 using any suitable technique, such as printing or the like. In one example, each layer is printed separately, with the two layers being subsequently aligned and adhered to each other. As part of this procedure, the cards can be formed by printing details onto respective webs of base and label material, which are then aligned, contacted, and subsequently cut to thereby form H:\tw\Interwoven\NRPortbl\DCC\TW\6084641_1.DOCX-24/10/201 1 -6 the cards. Alternatively, the base and label layers can be pre-cut, printed and then subsequently aligned, depending on the preferred manufacturing arrangement. In a further example, the base layer can be printed with the first information, the base and label layers combined, and then the label layer printed in situ, thereby assisting in correct registration of the first and second information. [0031] Throughout this specification and claims which follow, unless the context requires otherwise, the word "comprise", and variations such as "comprises" or "comprising", will be understood to imply the inclusion of a stated integer or group of integers or steps but not the exclusion of any other integer or group of integers. [0032] Persons skilled in the art will appreciate that numerous variations and modifications will become apparent. All such variations and modifications which become apparent to persons skilled in the art, should be considered to fall within the spirit and scope that the invention broadly appearing before described.
