Abstract

There is a fitted sheet which covers the top, side edges, head and foot edges and wraps under the base of the mattress slightly where the perimeter of the fitted sheet is sewn and gathered using elastic to ensure the sheet is secured to the mattress; and There is a flat sheet (or top sheet) which is attached with stitching to the fitted sheet at the perimeter with the elastic across the foot edge and down the long edges to at least 2/3 of the length of each side of the long edge of the fitted sheet perimeter from the corner of the foot edge and the long edge. This connects the flat sheet to the fitted sheet and allows both sheets to be applied to the bed with the fitting of the fitted sheet to the mattress. The remainder of the long edge of the flat sheet which is not attached to the fitted sheet remains free to be tucked in and/or folded back as needed.

Description

1 TITLE OF INVENTION = Twist Me Not sheets FIELD [001] The field of this innovation is in the area of Manchester - bed sheets especially for restless sleepers who get twisted in their top sheet and for the ease of making beds, especially bunk beds or beds that are positioned against a wall. BACKGROUND [002] It is common for people to make their beds with a fitted sheet and a flat sheet (also known as a top sheet). The problem arises due to the fact that the flat sheet is not connected to the bed or the fitted sheet in any way, but rather is tucked in under the mattress. This can present a problem for people who move around excessively in their sleep as they can get twisted and tangled up in the flat sheet, or find that the flat sheet ends up in a twisted mess at the foot of the bed. In addition, bunk beds and beds positioned against a wall can be difficult to make if you have to tuck in a flat sheet all the way around the mattress. By connecting the flat sheet to the fitted sheet, the bed becomes much easier to make with only minimal tucking in required. Both sheets can be placed on the bed with the same minimal effort as attaching just a fitted sheet. SUMMARY OF INVENTION [003] The innovation in Twist Me Not sheets is to connect the flat sheet to the fitted sheet via the elasticised edge that holds the fitted sheet on to the bed and to provide one or more pleats (depending on the size of the bed) down the centre of the flat sheet, allowing a body to comfortably fit between the flat sheet and the fitted sheet. The flat sheet is connected to the fitted sheet from 2 approximately 2/3 of the way up each long edge of the bed and across the bottom edge (foot) of the bed (see figure 1). The pleat is created in only the flat sheet and is sewn into the join at the centre of the bottom edge which provides additional room under the flat sheet. The flat sheet is not attached all of the way along the long edge of the fitted sheet to allow the top edge of the flat sheet to be turned down (eg. over a doona or blankets, etc) as well as to allow the occupant of the bed to comfortably sit up in the bed without causing tension at the point where the flat sheet joins the fitted sheet. This also makes it easy to get into and out of the bed. The bed can be made very easily due to the fact that the flat sheet is essentially fitted except for the top section (head end of the bed) which can simply be pulled up, turned down if preferred and can be left to hang or can be tucked in if preferred. [004] Twist Me Not sheets come in a range of sizes including, but not limited to, infant, cot, portacot, single bed, king single bed, double bed, queen bed, king bed as well as solutions for camper and caravan mattresses. ADVANTAGEOUS EFFECTS OF INVENTION [005] There are numerous benefits available as a result of this innovation. Beds are much easier to make as both the flat sheet and the fitted sheet are applied to the bed by applying the fitted sheet to the mattress. This is particularly advantageous for bunks or beds against a wall where the need to tuck a flat sheet all of the way around the mattress can be problematic. The fact that the flat sheet is secured to the fitted sheet reduces the possibility of a restless sleeper ending up twisted and tangled in the loose flat sheet. This also helps to eliminate the problem of getting cold as a result of the flat sheet ending up in a ball at the foot of the bed instead of covering the sleeper. The design allows for the sleeper to sit up in bed without placing strain on the flat sheet or the join between the flat sheet and the fitted sheet. The pleat allows room for a body to be under the flat sheet without the flat sheet being taut across the body.
3 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS [006] Figure 1 shows aerial view of the bed and how the sheets are designed. [007] Figure 2 shows the cross section of one example of the pleat as it would be stitched into place. The pleat may be stitched in other ways and there may be more than one pleat sewn in the flat sheet, depending on the size.
