Abstract

A label system comprising a cover and label with a first and second surface wherein the first surface is adapted to enable adherence to an item to which the label may be attached and the second surface comprises a customisable area for displaying label information, the first surface optionally covered by a protective sheet wherein the label further comprises a tab to increase the efficiency of removal of the protective sheet and a cover for a label or label area on an object, the cover comprising a first surface and a second surface wherein the first surface comprises an attachment means to enable the cover to attach to a label or label area on an object and the second surface comprises a transparent polymer.

Description

WO 2014/008538 PCT/AU2013/000755 Background of the invention Limited choices currently exist for those wishing to create or procure waterproof labels. One may go to a specialised printer and have these labels custom printed. Typically labels from specialised printers will take several days to print and deliver when ordered. If one needs to have them within the hour it is very hard to find a specialised printer who would be capable of producing the labels within the deadline. In addition, when one orders labels from the specialised printers, several things can occur. Labels may arrive with the wrong details on them (i.e. labels are not what was ordered) and need a reprint. Labels fail to be delivered. Labels arrive after the deadline. Labels from specialised printers must be ordered in certain quantities, these quantities are set by the specialised printer. For example, name labels for childcare/school market - you can only have one child's name per label selected. If you have multiple children then this is inflexible if you only require a small amount for one child and a large amount for another child. Also, one may be forced to order a minimum of 35 labels currently (large or medium sized labels) from any specialised Children Name Label printers. Therefore if you only required 3 labels for child A to finish labelling everything for childcare/school and for the child B you require 33 labels to finish labelling everything for childcare/school. Then currently you would be forced to order -a minimum of 35 labels for child A and then for child B you would be forced to order 2 sets of 35 labels. You cannot have the exact amount of labels that you want to have named - you are restricted by the specialised label printers as to how many labels are printed with that child's details. If you placed the class on the labels for a school aged child under their name as it is a school requirement, then those labels that are spare are useless for the following year. Labels purchased from specialised printers are expensive. In the above example the more children you have then the more expensive it is to have personalised labels for each child. Some specialised printers charge a delivery fee on top of the cost of labels. Labels purchased from specialised printers are often purchased from catalogues and online, therefore it is very hard to know the exact colour that they will be prior to ordering. Often shade variations can occur and it depends on how accurate each specialised printer is as to the colours displayed on the image in the catalogue or online. When looking at colours online then it also depends on the display unit that you are also using to look at the colours. Labels purchased from specialised printers are often purchased from catalogues and online, therefore it is very hard to know the exact size whilst most specialised printers will show an image of the label size these images can often be distorted. You have to resort to the measurements given by the printer to know the exact size that the labels will be. If you could WO 2014/008538 PCT/AU2013/000755 see the labels in the physical form it would be easier to make a decision on what size would suit your purpose the best. Often if you want to have a sample printed with the label details that you have selected you will get charged additional for this to be done as well as the additional waiting time for these labels to be delivered. Apart from purchasing from a specialised printer, another choice is a thermal label - for example as sold by Brother, which is in one colour label and one colour print, not multi colours, shapes and sizes. The only shape possibility is rectangle or square. You can not hand write on the labels with a standard pen, pencil, and crayon. If you place that label in the dishwasher then the label will turn black, the same will occur if you place that label in the freezer or microwave. A further choice apart from purchasing from a specialised printer is to purchase a label printer such as a hand held label printer. One type of label printer punches an impression via way of letter; number; symbol to make a mark on the surface of on the labels. This method is very time consuming as you can only punch one letter; number; symbol at time and then you must move to the next letter you want to punch. Like the other choices there are no multiple colours, shape and sizes. You only have a choice of one colour for the label colour, the punched letter; number; symbol comes through as a light/white colour. You only have a choice of a label that is one height so that it can fit through the machine, the shape possibilities are rectangle or square. This device can also cause wrist muscle injury- especially if you are using it to make many labels in a short time period. Labels are also not flexible but rather stiff making it difficult to bend around comers. If the label is accidently folded then there is a permanent mark on the label. A further type of label printer will print only one colour at a time after you have keyed in the letters and symbols required by cartridge method. You only have a choice of one colour for the label colour, and the printed information also appears in the colour of the cartridge that you have placed into the machine. You only have a choice of a label that is one height so that it can fit through the machine, the shape possibilities are rectangle or square. This device also has only a small number of label details that can be saved to the memory. You are also limited by the number of lines that you can print. Waterproof labels of multiple colours; shapes and sizes that can be personalised can not be purchased off the shelf at the local shop. If you are shopping at the supermarket or your local shop such as a News Agency, you can not currently walk in a purchase a pack of waterproof labels (for example for personalisation) off the shelf. You can not print a waterproof label with your home printer or just write on that label to personalise/customise it. Likewise if you print using a non specialised printing machine (i.e. a standard printer that would be used in the home and work market) a standard paper label available and cover it with stick tape or contact WO 2014/008538 PCT/AU2013/000755 that is readily available in shops then it does not form a waterproof seal and will not hold up in environments where there is water; humidity or cold. For example if the item is left to soak in room temperature water then the sticky tape layer is breached by the water and the water seeps in. As soon as the stick tape is placed into warm water (30 to 35 degrees) the tape will start to peel away from the object within 1 to 2 minutes. The contact over the standard label in cold water the contact peeled off the item within 2 minutes. Many pre-manufactured labels today are die-cut into individual labels, this makes it difficult to separate the backing sheet for the adhesive away from the actual adhesive layer. Often you need to bend the label to get the backing sheet to separate from the adhesive layer or you need to pick at a corner to get the backing sheet to separate. These actions may damage the label depending on how much force is exerted in trying to remove the backing sheet. Sometimes the label can actually stick to itself if accidentally folded back on itself whilst trying to separate the backing sheet. This can also occur on non die cut labels; i.e. on labels that exist on a baking sheet where the item has been plotted and the backing sheet has had some weeding to remove the excess material. It is very frustrating and time consuming if you have many items to. For example parents labelling school items. Personalisation of labels can also present difficulties. If you want to have an item with an area to personal to allow the user to directly write on that area, often over time the personalisation/customisation can wear off as the area is not protected. An example of these items may be a lunch box - currently the material being used that is being written on is Tyvek on certain types of material based lunch boxes. Currently there is no writable surface on lunch boxes or water bottles and many other items, this means that the end user is forced to purchase another product such as labels to allow personalisation/customisation of that product. Where a writable surface does exist (eg Tyvek label) if a writable surface has been written on with a standard writing implement such as a ball point pen then the writing will rub off within 6 months of use. There is no solution to this issue other than to use a permanent marker pen, however even permanent markers can rub off items. If you have a whiteboard or blackboard, then writings/drawings can be accidently rubbed off by someone leaning against/ brushing past or rubbing against that whiteboard/blackboard. Currently there is no solution for this issue. If you want to have an item with an area to personal to allow the user to directly write on that area, often over time the personalisation/customisation can wear off as the area is not protected. An example of these items may be a lunch box - currently the material being used that is being written on is Tyvek, if it has been written on with a standard writing implement such as a ball point pen then the writing will rub off within 6 months of use. There is no solution to this issue other than to use a permanent marker pen, however even permanent markers can rub off items. You may also want to have the information in the item as private. The reference to any prior art in this specification is not, and should not be taken as, an acknowledgement or any form of suggestion that the prior art forms part of the common general knowledge. Summary of the invention: According to one aspect of the invention, there is provided n at least water resistant label comprising a first and second surface wherein the first surface is adapted to enable adherence to an item to which the label may be attached and the second surface comprises a customisable area for displaying label information. In some embodiments the label may be water proof. In another aspect, the invention provides a label comprising a first surface and a second surface wherein the first surface comprises an attachment means to enable attachment to an item of interest, the first surface optionally covered by a protective sheet and wherein the label further comprises a tab to increase the efficiency of removal of the protective sheet. In a further aspect of the invention, there is provided a cover for a label or label area on an object, the cover comprising a first surface and a second surface wherein the first surface comprises an attachment means to enable the cover to attach to a label or label area on an object and the second surface comprises a transparent polymer. In one aspect, there is provided a label system comprising a cover and label with a first and second surface wherein the first surface is adapted to enable adherence to an item to which the label may be attached and the second surface comprises a customisable area for displaying label information, the first surface optionally covered by a protective sheet wherein the label further comprises a tab to increase the efficiency of removal of the protective sheet and a cover for a label or label area on an object, the cover comprising a first surface and a second surface wherein the first surface comprises an attachment means to enable the cover to attach to a label or label area on an object and the second surface comprises a transparent polymer. Water resistance as mentioned herein refers to an object that is not damaged by precipitation or small amounts of water. A water proof item would therefore be water resistant as well as water proof. Adherence or attachment by the first surface as described herein may be by any suitable means. In some embodiments it is via a sticky back sheet ( 1 't surface), in others it may equally WO 2014/008538 PCT/AU2013/000755 be a static electricity fastener, a hook and latch fastener or any other suitable attachment or adherence means. Customisation of the label or part label as described herein may be done by any suitable method - by using a computer, by hand, by adding a design or other images, etc. In one aspect of the invention, there is provided a water resistant label comprising a first and second surface wherein the first surface is adapted to enable adherence to an item to which the label may be attached and the second surface comprises a customisable area for displaying label information. In another aspect of the invention, there is provided a label comprising a first surface and a second surface wherein the first surface comprises an attachment means to enable attachment to an item of interest, the first surface optionally covered by a protective sheet and wherein the label further comprises a tab to increase the efficiency of removal of the protective sheet. In a further aspect of the invention, there is provided a cover for a label or label area on an object, the cover comprising a first surface and a second surface wherein the first surface comprises an attachment means to enable the cover to attach to a label or label area on an object and the second surface comprises a transparent polymer. In yet another aspect of the invention, there is provided a label system comprising a cover and label with a first and second surface wherein the first surface is adapted to enable adherence to an item to which the label may be attached and the second surface comprises a customisable area for displaying label information, the first surface optionally covered by a protective sheet wherein the label further comprises a tab to increase the efficiency of removal of the protective sheet and a cover for a label or label area on an object, the cover comprising a first surface and a second surface wherein the first surface comprises an attachment means to enable the cover to attach to a label or label area on an object and the second surface comprises a transparent polymer. Throughout this specification (including any claims which follow), unless the context requires otherwise, the word 'comprise', and variations such as 'comprises' and 'comprising', will be understood to imply the inclusion of a stated integer or step or group of integers or steps but not the exclusion of any other integer or step or group of integers or steps. Detailed description of exemplary embodiments: It is convenient to describe the invention herein in relation to particularly preferred embodiments. However, the invention is applicable to a wide range of situations and it is to be appreciated that other constructions and arrangements are also considered as falling within the scope of the invention. Various modifications, alterations, variations and or additions to the construction and arrangements described herein are also considered as falling within the ambit and scope of the present invention. In one aspect of the invention, there is provided a waterproof label that can be purchased off the shelf at a retail outlet and can be personalised/customised (possible via printed on the label using a standard print machine such as but 'not limited to a domestic print machine; and/or via writing/drawing on the label using a standard writing device such as but not limited to a pen; pencil; crayon). Such labels can be used in multiple industries and for multi applications and can come in multiple sizes, shapes and colours. The labels can be personalised, customised by placing them through a standard printer and printing on them; and/or they could be customised by writing/drawing on them using a standard writing/drawing implement. Labels according to the invention allow the end user whom has a short time frame to purchase and customise the labels to meet deadlines without having to use a specialised printer. Labels according to the invention allow the end user to personalise/customise the exact number of labels that they required without a minimum quantity of labels having to be printed. Labels according to the invention reduce the risk of labels being printed with the incorrect details as there is no third party printing the labels. The end user can personalise/customise the labels. Labels according to the invention can allow the end user to sight the size, colour and shape, prior to purchasing if purchased from a retail outlet. There is no colour shade variation as they can see exactly the colours on the labels that they are purchasing.

WO 2014/008538 PCT/AU2013/000755 Labels according to the invention can allow the end user the freedom to choose how the information is printed on the labels, such as font; print colours, etc. Therefore if the end user wants 5 lines on a label they can put 5 lines on a label, they are not restricted by the restrictions placed on by specialised printers such as the number of lines, the type of font, the colour of the font etc. They are only restricted by what can actually physically fit on the label. Labels according to the invention can allow the end user to do artwork without the, requirement of special programs on the labels. The end user could use any program on different devices to do artwork and then print that artwork on the label. The end user could hand draw directly on the label. The end user does not have to use vector images that may be required -for specialised printing equipment. Labels according to the invention do not fall off when soaked in water. These labels can withstand a range of different environmental conditions including variation in temperature. Labels according to the invention are cost effective for the user and can be produced and sold for a fraction of the cost of purchasing from a specialised printer. For example 70 labels could be sold at a possible retail price at a fraction of the price from a specialised printer. According to another aspect of the invention there is provided labels which are readily separable from their backing sheets by use of a tab to assist in peeling away the baking sheet. Such a tab allows the user to easily separate the backing sheet from the label by applying pressure in the way of a "pulling" action. The force will then separate the backing sheet from the label. Labels according to this aspect of the invention may comprise a peel away tab allowing the backing sheet to be easily separate from the label where the labels have been die cut into individual labels or where the clear label is pre-stuck either on a side or the top of bottom of the printable/writable label. The peel away tab has been attached to the backing sheet to allow easily removal in this type of situation. Alternatively the peel away tab may form part of the backing sheet. The peel away tab can be independently applied to any die cut label or labels that have the requirement for such a device on both sides of the label - the backing sheet and/or the top layer of the label. If applied to the top layer of the label the peel away tab will be able to be removed from the top layer of the label without causing damage. The peel away tab can be any shape, size and may or may not have printing on it. Labels according to this aspect of the invention may or may not have the clear cover pre-stuck with .label material on one side or top/bottom allowing the user to peel the remainder of the backing sheet for the adhesive away from the clear label away. Labels according to this aspect of the invention may or may not have a peel away tab section on the backing section to allow for easy removal of the backing paper.

WO 2014/008538 PCT/AU2013/000755 In another aspect of the invention, there is provided a clear label cover. As an example, if a writable material was to go directly on the item such as a writable surface; then by placing a clear label over that area as a protective cover, it will prevent the writing/printing; personalisation/customisation from rubbing off the item. The label can be clear therefore allowing the user to view the information under the label. The label can be attached to the item prior to having the adhesive backing paper removed from the item, i.e. it may be pre-stuck or fused to the item. The label can be multiple shapes, sizes and colour. Also according to this aspect of the invention is provided the ability to place a writable surface on items that do not currently have a writable surface such as lunchboxes and water bottles, as well as many other items not mentioned here. Writable surfaces can be either printed on by various print techniques such as heat transfer printing; thermal printing; screen printing; digital printing; offset printing; pad printing; hot foil/stamping printing; dye sublimation printing process; direct transfer printing just to name a few printing processes or any other printing technique/processes which could be used to place a writable surface on an object. Examples of possible uses for the label would be identity bracelets; cups and plates used at parties; lunchboxes; water bottles; shoes; school bags. Another example of use would be to cover a whiteboard and blackboard surface to prevent the whiteboard ink or chalk being rubbed off. For example if a filing cabinet/storage container/box was applied with a whiteboard/blackboard area on the product either printed directly onto the product or a whiteboard/blackboard label was printed or painted directly onto the product, then by using a clear cover would mean that the writing was not accidently rubbed off until it was no longer required. The label may or may not have a crease thus allowing it to be easily folded back with an area that is still fused and/or bonded and/or stuck to the object. If stuck to an object it may have permanent or removable adhesive on the part of the label that is sticking to the item. If a writable material was used to go directly on the item such as a writable surface; then by placing a clear label over that area as a protective cover, it will prevent the writing rubbing off the item. The label can be clear therefore allowing the user to view the information under the label. The label can be attached to the item prior to having the adhesive backing paper removed from the item, i.e. it may be pre-stuck or fused to the item. The label can be multiple shapes, sizes and colour. The label may also comprise a second cover that is not clear; this label has a removable section allowing it to be removed to see the information below. Another variation is that it may just be a label that is not clear which is placed over the area you want to protect. Another variation may be that the label has removable and non-removable areas on it. This label can be partially or fully removed to allow the information to be accessed underneath the label.

Another variation is that the label may or may not be made of waterproof material; or non waterproof material. Another variation is that the label may or may not comprise of a permanent or removable adhesive layer or a combination of both. Another variation is that the labdI may or may not have a foldfcrease area that allows the label to be bent back or up or down. Another variation is that the label may or may not have the ability to fold/crease back and be secured in that back position by an adhesive layer. To use the user would simple write on the printable/writable ink and then peel off the backing sheet from the clear label and pressing down on the clear label to adhere to the item. The adhesive on the label may be permanent or it may be removable allowing the user to remove the patterned/coloured label when desired. The pattern/colour label has a crease/fold line/area that allows for easy access where removable adhesive was used on the clear label. Figure 5a: Not to scale, shape may vary and not limited by. Figure 5a shows a label/ tag that has a printable/writable surface and a clear label fused to the tag. The clear label is designed to be folded over the printable/writable surface. The purpose of the clear cover is to protect the writing from rubbing off. To use the user would simple write on the printable/writable surface/label and then peel off the backing sheet from the clear label and pressing down on the clear label to adhere to the to the writeable surface/label. This way the writing would be protected. The clear label is fused to the tag and to the printable/writable label/surface on the item and has a crease/fold line/area that allows for easy access where removable adhesive was used on the clear label The clear label can extend past the printable/writable label/surface/tag. The label/tag has adhesive on the tail section of the tag which once placed through the slot is designed to adhere to a cable such as electrical cable as it wraps around the cable. There is a non adhesive section on the middle of the label/tag. The label/tag is flexible but durable and strong.

Claims

1. An at least water resistant label comprising a first and second surface wherein the first surface is adapted to enable adherence to an item to which the label may be attached and the second surface comprises a customisable area for displaying label information.

2. A label comprising a first surface and a second surface wherein the first surface comprises an attachment means to enable attachment to an item of interest, the first surface optionally covered by a protective sheet and wherein the label further comprises a tab to increase the efficiency of removal of the protective sheet.

3. A cover for a label or label area on an object, the cover comprising a first surface and a second surface wherein the first surface comprises an attachment means to enable the cover to attach to a label or label area on an object and the second surface comprises a transparent polymer.

4. A label system comprising a cover and label with a first and second surface wherein the first surface is adapted to enable adherence to an item to which the label may be attached and the second surface comprises a customisable area for displaying label information, the first surface optionally covered by a protective sheet wherein the label further comprises a tab to increase the efficiency of removal of the protective sheet and a cover for a label or label area on an object, the cover comprising a first surface and a second surface wherein the first surface comprises an attachment means to enable the cover to attach to a label or label area on an object and the second surface comprises a transparent polymer.
