Abstract
A gaming apparatus (10) includes a display (18) for representing main gaming reels (20) each having main gaming symbols (22). The reels spin and then stop spinning such that a stationary main symbol is displayed on each main reel. If the combination of main symbols is a jackpot winning combination and none of the main symbols is a wild card , a main jackpot prize is awarded to the player. However, if one of main symbols is a wild card symbol, a supplementary reel (44) is triggered. This has supplementary symbols (42) each representing an alternative jackpot prize. When the supplementary reel stops spinning, the displayed supplementary symbol represents an alternative jackpot prize to be awarded to the player.
Description
1 AUSTRALIA Patents Act 1990 COMPETE SPECIFICATION Invention Title: Gaming apparatus and method The invention is described in the following statement: 2 FIELD OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to a gaming apparatus and to a method of gaming. 5 BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION In the gaming industry, there are a large number of different games configured in an attempt to stimulate excitement and interest among players. One of the methods of doing so for the games to provide jackpot awards in the event of 10 certain gaming outcomes occurring. However, in some instances, the odds of winning a particular jackpot are relatively low. In an attempt to avoid loss of interest among players as a result of the low odds of winning, it would be beneficial for such games to provide 15 potential winning outcomes with higher odds than those of the main jackpots of such games. It is an object of the present invention to ameliorate or overcome disadvantages of the prior art or to provide a useful alternative. 20 SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a gaming apparatus including a display adapted for representing a plurality of main 25 gaming reels wherein each reel has a plurality of main gaming symbols, the apparatus being adapted: to cause the reels to spin and then to stop spinning such that a respective main symbol is displayed on each main reel as a stationary main symbol; 30 if the main reels have stopped spinning, and the combination of stationary main symbols constitutes a predetermined jackpot winning combination and none of the stationary main symbols is a predetermined wild card symbol, to award a main jackpot prize to the player, and if once the main reels have stopped spinning, and the combination of 35 stationary main symbols constitutes a predetermined jackpot winning 3 combination in which one of the stationary main symbols is a predetermined wild card symbol, to trigger the spinning of a supplementary reel having a plurality of supplementary symbols each representing a particular alternative jackpot prize, and to cause the supplementary reel to stop spinning such that 5 one of the supplementary symbols is displayed on that reel as a stationary supplementary symbol, and to award to a player the alternative jackpot prize represented by that stationary supplementary symbol. In a preferred embodiment, the apparatus is adapted to selectively cause a 10 special symbol to appear adjacent to one of the main reels while that main reel is spinning, and to award the main jackpot prize or the alternative jackpot prize only once that special symbol appears. In a preferred embodiment, 15 said predetermined jackpot winning combination is a particular one of a plurality of predetermined combinations, and, the main jackpot prize is a selected one of a plurality of main jackpot prizes, and the apparatus is adapted such that the selected main jackpot prize is 20 determined based on said particular predetermined combination. In a preferred embodiment, said predetermined jackpot winning combination is a particular one of a plurality of predetermined combinations, and 25 the supplementary reel is a selected one of a plurality of supplementary reels, the apparatus being adapted such that the supplementary reel that is selected is determined based on said particular predetermined combination. According to one embodiment, said particular predetermined combination is 30 one of two available predetermined combinations. According to another embodiment, said particular predetermined combination is one of three available predetermined combinations.
4 In a preferred embodiment, the respective available predetermined combinations represent respective different levels of main jackpot prize. In a preferred embodiment, the gaming apparatus is adapted to cause the supplementary reel, when triggered, to be displayed superimposed on one of 5 the main reels. According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a method of gaming to be performed using a gaming apparatus having a display adapted for representing a plurality of main gaming reels wherein each reel has a 10 plurality of main gaming symbols, the method including: causing the reels to spin and then to stop spinning such that a respective main symbol is displayed on each main reel as a stationary main symbol; and if, once the main reels have stopped spinning, the combination of 15 stationary main symbols constitutes a predetermined jackpot winning combination and none of the stationary main symbols is a predetermined wild card symbol, awarding a main jackpot prize to the player, and if, once the main reels have stopped spinning, the combination of stationary main symbols constitutes a predetermined jackpot winning 20 combination in which one of the stationary main symbols is a predetermined wild card symbol, triggering the spinning of a supplementary reel having a plurality of supplementary symbols each representing a particular alternative jackpot prize, and causing the supplementary reel to stop spinning such that one of the supplementary symbols is displayed on that reel as a stationary 25 supplementary symbol, and awarding to a player the alternative jackpot prize represented by that stationary supplementary symbol. In a preferred embodiment, the method includes selectively causing a special symbol to appear adjacent to one of the main reels while that main reel is 30 spinning, and awarding the main jackpot prize or the alternative jackpot prize only once that special symbol appears. In a preferred embodiment, in the method, 5 said predetermined combination of stationary main symbols is a particular one of a plurality of predetermined combinations, and the main jackpot prize is a selected one of a plurality of main jackpot prizes, and 5 the selected main jackpot prize is determined based on the particular plurality of predetermined combinations. In a preferred embodiment, in the method, said predetermined combination of stationary main symbols is a 10 particular one of a plurality of predetermined combinations, and the supplementary reel is a selected one of a plurality of supplementary reels, wherein the supplementary reel that is selected is determined based on said particular plurality of predetermined combinations. 15 In a preferred embodiment, in the method, said particular predetermined combination is one of two available predetermined combinations. In a preferred embodiment, in the method, said particular predetermined combination is one of three available predetermined combinations. 20 In a preferred embodiment, the respective available predetermined combinations represent respective different levels of main jackpot prize. In a preferred embodiment, the method includes causing the supplementary 25 reel, when triggered, to be displayed superimposed on one of the main reels. In this specification, where reference is made to a reel, this includes a virtual reel, that is, an image of a reel, which is to be understood, insofar as it relates to symbols appearing on the reel, the way the reel is viewed, and the display 30 of symbols on the reel, as if it were a mechanical reel.
6 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Preferred embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: 5 Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view of a gaming apparatus according to an embodiment of the invention; Figure 2 is a representation of a display of reels of the gaming apparatus of 10 Figure 1; Figure 3 is a representation of jackpot display areas of the gaming apparatus; and 15 Figures 3a to 3c are alternative images for portions of the jackpot display areas of Figure 3. DETAILED DESCRIPTION 20 Referring to the drawings, there is shown a schematic view of a gaming apparatus 10. The gaming apparatus 10 has a player interface 12 including controls 14 for enabling a player to interact with the gaming apparatus, and including a slot 16 for receiving monetary payments from the player. 25 In addition, the gaming apparatus 10 includes a display 18, having a lower display screen 18.1 and an upper display screen 18.2. The lower display screen 18.1 is adapted, when operating, to display five main gaming reels 20 as shown in Figure 2. Each gaming reel 20 has a number of 30 different main gaming symbols 22 on the reel (only two of which are shown), the symbols being arranged around the reel. Where reference is made to a particular gaming symbol 22 being displayed, then, according one example, this is a reference to that particular gaming 7 symbol on a particular reel 20, which is stationary and which has the appearance of being substantially at the vertical centre of the reel - i.e. at the front of the reel, as is the case of the symbol shown in Figure 2. 5 Alternatively, where the game being played has a pay line which is other than a single straight line across the reels 22, the reference to a particular gaming symbol 22 being displayed is a reference to the symbol or symbols 22 on each reel 20 that fall on the pay line. 10 Also shown on the lower screen 18.1 is a "credit" area 24, in which credits available to the player are shown. These credits are based on money inserted directly into the gaming apparatus 10 by the player, or money allocated to the gaming apparatus from a remote location, and including any prize awards made to the player which have been allocated to the player's credits. It is to 15 be understood that any reference to money includes a reference to coins and paper money or banknotes. In addition payments can be made by means of suitably coded tickets, such as tickets bearing bar codes. Also disclosed is a "bet" area 26, in which the amount wagered on a particular 20 game by the player is displayed. In addition, a "win" area 28 is displayed, which discloses the amount, if any, that has been won in a particular game by the player. 25 The upper screen 18.2 includes three main areas 30, 32, 34, arranged one above another, relating to three different main jackpots that can be won by a player using the gaming apparatus 10, as discussed further, below. These main jackpots are a "major" jackpot (to which the area 30 relates), a 30 "minor" jackpot (to which the area 32 relates) and a "mini" jackpot (to which the area 34 relates).
8 Beneath those displays 30, 32, 34, there are shown three supplementary jackpot display areas, being a "reel gold" display area 36, a "reel silver" display area 38, and a "reel bronze" display area 40. 5 Adjacent to these display areas 36, 38, and 40, there are shown images of stepper reels 36.1, 38.1 and 40.1, respectively. Each stepper reel image 36.1, 38.1, 40.1 includes representations 42 of monetary amounts (e.g. $20, $25, $10, etc), of which, for each supplementary reel image, one of these amounts is shown as the displayed amount, namely the amount in the vertical centre of 10 the reel. The gaming apparatus 10 includes a game controller (not shown) which is adapted to control the playing of the game, which is initiated by a player. 15 Once the player has allocated a particular wager to the game, the player can initiate the playing of the game by use of the controls 14 on the interface 12. Once the gameplay has been initiated, the main reels 20 begin to spin, after which they stop spinning. 20 The spinning and the stopping of the spinning is controlled by the game controller, and the particular position at which the reels 20 stop, that is, the particular symbols 22 on the reels which are displayed (in the sense described above) is determined by a random number generator forming part of the controller. 25 Accordingly, the outcome of that particular part of the play of the game is determined by the particular combination of symbols 22 displayed on the five main reels 20. 30 According to a preferred embodiment, the gaming apparatus 10 is adapted to award the player with a prize in the event that a predetermined winning combination of symbols 22 is displayed as the outcome of that part of the play of the game, on the gaming reels 20. Depending on how the game is configured, there may be a number of different pay lines. Essentially, this 9 means that, instead of a winning combination of symbols simply appearing in a straight line across the reels 20, other patterns or configurations of symbols on the reels may constitute a winning "line". For example, they can be diagonally orientated patterns of symbols, symbols on more than one line, 5 symbols arranged in a zigzag shape, etc. For example, such a winning outcome may be constituted by a combination along a pay line, of five of kind, such as five 1 Os, or five Kings. 10 Further according to the preferred embodiment, the awarding of the prize is not only made if an actual combination of such predetermined symbols appears on the main reels 20, but also if one of those symbols is substituted by a predetermined wildcard symbol (not shown). 15 A wildcard symbol, as would be understood by those skilled in the art, is a "substitute" symbol which is deemed to take on the value of any other symbol, to the advantage of the player. Thus, if a particular predetermined combination of symbols that will give rise to a prize awarded to the player is a combination of five Kings, and if the outcome involves four Kings being 20 displayed on four separate reels 20, and a wildcard symbol being displayed on the remaining, fifth reel, this will be deemed to be a combination of five Kings, and hence a winning outcome for the player. The game according to the present invention is a progressive jackpot game. A 25 first stage of the progressive jackpot involves a special symbol 43 being displayed adjacent to one of the symbols 22 on one of the reels 20. As seen the special symbol 43 is in the form of a substantially rectangular shape around the main symbol 22 on the reel 20, but other shapes of special symbol could be used instead. 30 In order for the player to be awarded a main jackpot prize, a particular predetermined combination of symbols 22 must be displayed on the five reels 20, when they stop spinning, together with the special symbol appearing adjacent to one of the reels.
10 According to different embodiments, the special symbol 43 may appear adjacent to any one of the symbols 22 on any of the reels 20, and might or might not fall within a particular pay-line for the game in questions. As a 5 further alternative, the special symbol 43 might appear around substantially the whole reel 22. To be eligible for the main jackpot, the combination of symbols 22 must be a combination of those symbols themselves, without the use of a wildcard 10 symbol. According to the present embodiment, as mentioned above, there are three different main jackpots that can be awarded, namely the "major" jackpot, the "minor" jackpot, and the "mini" jackpot. 15 One particular predetermined combination of symbols 22 will result in the "major" jackpot being awarded, a different predetermined combination of symbols will result in the "minor" jackpot being awarded, while a further predetermined combination of symbols will result in the "mini" jackpot being 20 awarded. More specifically, according to the present embodiment, the combination of symbols 22 that need to appear on the five reels 20 in order for the "major" jackpot to be triggered is a combination of special symbols. 25 According to one preferred embodiment, those symbols are images corresponding to an artistic "theme" of the gaming apparatus 10, such a theme being provided to increase the appeal of the game to users. Thus, for example, if the theme of the gaming apparatus 10 is an African wildlife theme, 30 those symbols 22 might be of different African wild animals. In addition, other art work might appear on the gaming apparatus 10 also representing African wildlife scenery.
11 Further according to the example, in order for the "minor" jackpot to be awarded, the combination of symbols 22 on the five reels 20 must be five of a kind, either Aces, or kings, or Queens (so-called "royals") 5 Similarly, according to the example, in order for the "mini" jackpot to be awarded, the combination of symbols 22 presented on the five reels 20 must be five of a kind, either 8s, or 1 Os, or Jacks. While details of these combinations may be provided by suitable information 10 displayed on the exterior of the gaming apparatus 10, according to a preferred embodiment, in the areas 30.1, 32.1, 34.1 for the "major", "minor", and "mini" jackpots, respectively, although not shown in the drawings, there is displayed information indicating the combinations of symbols that will give rise to the particular jackpots. Further, in the areas 30.2, 32.2, 34.2 for the "major", 15 "minor", and "mini" jackpots, respectively, there are amounts representing the quanta of the jackpots that can be awarded to the player, in the event that the player wins the relevant jackpots. In the event that the particular predetermined combinations of symbols 22 are 20 displayed when the reels 20 stop spinning, but where one of those symbols is substituted by a wildcard symbol, then, as mentioned above, the player will not be eligible for the "major", "minor", or "mini" jackpots. However, the player will then be eligible for one of the supplementary jackpots, namely the "reel gold", "reel silver" or "reel bronze" jackpots. 25 More specifically, the same particular predetermined combination of symbols 22 that would result in the "major" jackpot being awarded applies in the case of the "reel gold" supplementary jackpot except that one of the symbols is substituted by a wildcard symbol. 30 Similarly, the same combination of symbols 22 that would give rise to the "minor" jackpot being awarded will result in the "reel silver" supplementary jackpot being awarded, where one of the symbols of the combination is substituted by a wildcard symbol.
12 Further, the same combination of symbols 22 that would give rise to the "mini" jackpot being awarded will give rise to the "reel bronze" supplementary jackpot being awarded, where one of the symbols in the combination is 5 substituted by a wildcard symbol. In the event that such a combination of symbols 22 is achieved (that is, the combinations including the wild cards which are adapted to trigger the "reel gold", "reel silver ", or "reel bronze" supplementary jackpots), a jackpot 10 stepper reel 44, being a bigger version of one of the stepper reals represented by the stepper reel images 36.1, 38.1, 40.1 adjacent the areas 36, 38, 40, representing the three supplementary jackpots, will appear superimposed over the particular one of the main reels 20 adjacent to which the special symbol 43 appears. Simply for the sake of clarity, although the jackpot stepper 15 reel 44 is illustrated on the right-most reel as shown in Figure 2, the special symbol 43 is not shown on that reel (although it is shown on the second reel from the left). While the stepper reel images 36.1, 38.1, 40.1 are shown in Figure 2, in 20 another preferred embodiment, these images only appear on triggering of the "reel gold", "reel silver ", or "reel bronze" supplementary jackpots. In this embodiment, prior to those stepper reel images 36.1, 38.1, 40.1 appearing, there are other images in those locations, preferably images of coins or medallions as shown in Figures 3a, 3b and 3c (corresponding to the locations 25 of the stepper reel images 36.1, 38.1, 40.1, respectively. The determination of which one of the three stepper reels, represented by the stepper reel images 36.1, 38.1, 40.1, will constitute the jackpot stepper reel 44 is based on the particular combination of symbols displayed on the five main 30 reels 20, when those reels stop spinning. Thus, if the combination of symbols 20 is the predetermined combination that would result in the "major" jackpot being awarded except that one of the symbols is a wildcard symbol (e.g. four of a kind of the African wild animals if 13 the theme is the African theme mentioned above, together with the wildcard), then the jackpot stepper reel 44 will be the reel represented by the stepper reel image 36.1 adjacent to the "reel gold" jackpot display area 36. 5 Similarly, if the combination of symbols 20 is the predetermined combination that would result in the "minor" jackpot being awarded except that one of the symbols is a wildcard symbol (e.g. four of a kind of any one of an Ace, King or Queen, together with a wildcard symbol), then the jackpot stepper reel 44 will be the reel represented by the stepper reel image 38.1 adjacent to the "reel 10 silver" jackpot display area 38. Similarly, if the combination of symbols 20 is the predetermined combination that would result in the "mini" jackpot being awarded except that one of the symbols is a wildcard symbol (e.g. four of a kind of any one of a 8, 10 or Jack, 15 together with a wildcard symbol), then the jackpot stepper reel 44 will be the reel represented by the stepper reel image 40.1 adjacent to the "reel bronze" jackpot display area 40. In the display areas on the gaming apparatus 10 for the supplementary 20 jackpots, i.e. the "reel gold" display area 36, "reel silver" display area 38, and "reel bronze" display area 40, although not shown in the drawings, there are displayed the symbols 22 that would need to constitute the symbols displayed on the main reels 20 in order to be eligible for these respective supplementary jackpots. 25 The jackpot stepper reel 44 begins to spin and then stops spinning, that spinning and the stopping of the spinning being controlled by the game controller, so that one of the monetary amounts 42 on that stepper reel is displayed. 30 As mentioned above, the jackpot stepper reel 44 is a bigger version of one of the stepper reel images 36.1, 38.1, 40.1 adjacent the areas 36, 38, 40. The particular stepper reel image 36.1, 38.1, 40.1 to which the jackpot stepper reel 44 corresponds will also spin simultaneously with the jackpot stepper reel 44 14 such those two reels are identical as they spin except that the jackpot stepper reel is larger. Thus, a player can view the play of that jackpot either by looking at the main reels 20 or by looking at the jackpot display area of the upper display screen 18.2. 5 The particular one of the monetary amounts 42 displayed when the jackpot stepper reel 44 stops spinning is determined by a random number generator forming part of the game controller. The monetary amount 42 displayed when that spinning stops is the amount that is awarded to the player as part of the 10 relevant supplementary jackpot ("reel gold", "reel silver", or "reel bronze"). As their names suggest, according to the preferred embodiment, the quantum of the "major" main jackpot (to which the area 30 on the upper screen 18.2 relates) is higher than that of the "minor" jackpot (to which the area 32 on the 15 upper screen 18.2 relates), which in turn is higher than that of the "mini" jackpot (to which the area 34 on the upper screen 18.2 relates). For example, the quantum of the "major" jackpot may be $550, while that of the "minor" jackpot may be $170, while that of the "mini" jackpot may be $53, 20 as illustrated in the areas 30.2, 32.2 and 34.2 in Figure 2. Similarly, the average quanta of the monetary amounts 42 displayed on the stepper reel image 36.1 pertaining to the "reel gold" supplementary jackpot is higher than that of the stepper reel image 38.1 pertaining to the "reel silver" 25 supplementary jackpot, which is in turn higher than that of the stepper reel image 40.1 pertaining to the "reel bronze" supplementary jackpot. This is so even though individual amounts on any two of the stepper reel images 36.1, 38.1, 40.1 may be the same as each other. 30 As the jackpot stepper reel 44 will correspond to one of these three stepper reel images 36.1, 38.1, 40.1 depending on which particular predetermined combination of symbols 22 is displayed on the main reels 20, it will be understood that the same comments made above in relation to the quanta of 15 the monetary amounts 42 appearing these stepper reel imaged will also apply to the actual jackpot stepper reel 44 that appears. Because of the differing average quanta for those three stepper reel images 5 36.1, 38.1, 40.1, and because the particular monetary amount 42 displayed when the particular stepper reel 44 which has been triggered stops spinning is determined randomly, there is a likelihood that the supplementary jackpot awarded in the event that the "reel gold" stepper reel is activated would be higher than the supplementary jackpot awarded if the "reel silver" stepper reel 10 is activated. Similarly, there is a likelihood that the monetary amount that will be awarded by the "reel silver" stepper reel if activated, would be higher than that which would be awarded by the "reel bronze" stepper reel if that reel were activated. 15 Although the invention is described above in relation to preferred embodiments, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that it is not limited to those embodiments, but may be embodied in many other forms.
