Abstract

A BAR ASSEMBLY A cable ladder assembly (10) including a cable tray (11) that is supported by transverse members (12). Each transverse member (12) is provided by a bar assembly including a pair of channel members (15, 16). Cl -i

Description

1 A BAR ASSEMBLY FIELD [0001] The present invention relates to bar assemblies and more particularly but not exclusively to bar assemblies employed to support cable ladders. BACKGROUND [0002] The abovementioned cable ladders including a longitudinally extending tray upon which cables rest. The trays are supported by transverse bars suspended from suspension rods. [0003] A disadvantage of the above discussed members is that they can be incorrectly assembled when being secured to the suspension rods. OBJECT [0004] It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate the above disadvantage. SUM MARY [0005] There is disclosed herein a bar assembly including: a first bar; a second bar; each bar having a generally "U" or "C" shaped transverse cross section so as to have a pair of longitudinally extending flanges that are spaced and joined by a longitudinally extending base; and wherein the bars are arranged so as to be parallel with abutting bases, with the flanges being generally coplanar and the bars welded together by longitudinally extending welds located at longitudinally extending corners of the abutting bases and the associated flanges; with the assembly further including reinforcing plates welded to the flanges adjacent end portions of the bar. [0006] Preferably, the abutting bases are spot welded together.
2 [0007] Preferably, each of the bases is provided with a hole in the end portions of the assembly, with the holes aligned with holes in the plates to provide for a suspension rod to pass therethrough. [0008] There is disclosed herein a cable latter assembly including: a longitudinally extending cable tray; a plurality of support members supporting the tray, the support members being spaced longitudinally of the tray and extending transverse relative to the tray, with each support member being a bar assembly as defined in claim 3; a suspension rod extending through each aligned pair of holes; and nuts threadably engaged with each rod to secure the bar assemblies to the rods so that the tray is supported by the rods. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS [0009] Preferred forms of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: [0010] Figure 1 is a schematic side elevation of a cable ladder and suspension rods; [0011] Figures 2 is a schematic plan view of an elongated member of the cable ladder of Figure 1; and [0012] Figure 3 is a schematic end elevation of the member of Figure 2. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS [0013] In the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted a cable ladder assembly 10. The assembly 10 includes a longitudinally extending cable tray 11 supported by transverse support members 12 suspended by suspension rods 13. Each transverse member 12 is a bar assembly 14 that includes a pair of generally parallel coextensive channel members (bars) 15 and 16. Each of the channel members 15 and 16 is of a "C" or "U" transverse cross section so as to have a pair of longitudinally extending flanges 17 joined by a longitudinally extending base 18.
3 [0014] Longitudinally extending welds 19 join the channel members 15 and 16 adjacent the longitudinally extending corners, with the bases 18 also secured together by spot welds 20. [0015] The bases 18 are provided with holes via which the suspension rods 13 pass through the bar assembly 14. [0016] Welded to the end portions of the flanges 17 are reinforcing plates 21 that are also provided with holes 22 to again provide for the rods 13 to pass therethrough. The holes 22 and the holes in the bases 18 are aligned. [0017] Nuts 23 are threadably engaged with the rods 13 and abut the plates 21 to secure the suspension rods 13 to the bar assembly 14. [0018] An advantage of the above described preferred embodiment is that the bar assembly 14 cannot be incorrectly assembled since the reinforcing plates 21 are welded in position. A further advantage includes the longitudinally extending welds 19 and spot welds 20 that aid the bar assembly 14 in retaining rigidity and therefore inhibiting bending about an axis transverse of the bar assembly 14.

Claims (4)

1. A bar assembly including: a first bar; a second bar; each bar having a generally "U" or "C" shaped transverse cross section so as to have a pair of longitudinally extending flanges that are spaced and joined by a longitudinally extending base; and wherein the bars are arranged so as to be parallel with abutting bases, with the flanges being generally coplanar and the bars welded together by longitudinally extending welds located at longitudinally extending corners of the abutting bases and the associated flanges; with the assembly further including reinforcing plates welded to the flanges adjacent end portions of the bar.
2. The bar assembly of claim 1, wherein the abutting bases are spot welded together.
3. The bar assembly of claim 1 or 2, wherein each of the bases is provided with a hole in the end portions of the assembly, with the holes aligned with holes in the plates to provide for a suspension rod to pass therethrough.
4. A cable ladder assembly including: a longitudinally extending cable tray; a plurality of support members supporting the tray, the support members being spaced longitudinally of the tray and extending transverse relative to the tray, with each support member being a bar assembly as defined in claim 3; a suspension rod extending through each aligned pair of holes; and nuts threadably engaged with each rod to secure the bar assemblies to the rods so that the tray is supported by the rods.
