Abstract

This innovation patent discloses the design of a standard USB flash memory device incorporating a built-in Bluetooth radio powered by internal rechargeable battery. The Bluetooth radio can be turned on, powered by the internal battery, without the need to be connected to a USB port for a power source. The device flash memory can be accessed by another Bluetooth-enabled device wirelessly. EDITORIAL NOTE 2013100599 There is one page of the description only DESCRIPTION Background Technology Most USB flash memory devices requires the device to be connected to a USB port of a computer or laptop to be able to read and write files from it. A USB memory device is portable but accessing the files in the device requires an external device which might not be very portable. Sometimes, a user might only need to access file(s) in the memory device to attach to an email. Invention Content With the growing use of smartphone and tablets, most with in-built Bluetooth radios, a Bluetooth-enabled USB memory device will allow quick and easy access to files stored in the device. A software app can be created for smartphones and tablets, which will allow the app on the smartphone or tablet to automatically detect and connect to the USB memory device, without the need for manual pairing. Device Hardware Description Refer to Figure 1 attached. The Bluetooth radio in the device will be powered by an internal rechargeable battery could last for a few hours of continuous use. The radio will automatically turn off after a few minutes of inactivity to conserve battery. The battery in the device will recharge automatically when connected to a power source, like the USB port of a computer or laptop. The device will have a 3-position switch on the side with the following function: e Off e On (read-only) e On (Full read-write access) A blue LED next to the 3-position switch will indicated the status of the Bluetooth radio. - Off - Bluetooth Radio Off e On (flashing) - Bluetooth Radio On, not paired to another external device e On (solid) - Bluetooth Radio On and paired to one or more external devices e On (intermittent flash) - Device memory is being accessed by an external device A dual-colour LED at the top of the device will indicate the device status. " Off - Device inactive e Yellow (solid) - Device on and connected to USB port " Yellow (intermittent flash) - Device memory is being accessed by an external device from USB port " Red (flashing) - Low battery Device Software Description The device will be preinstalled with a graphic user interface (GUI) to allow the user to configure the access level of the device. The user can configure the device to allow an external device to automatically pair with it on Bluetooth or to configure a user-define passkey for pairing. For automatic pairing, each Bluetooth radio will have the same default PIN. The GUI will also allow user to configure access levels of its folder structures. e Public-access Folders - When an external device is connected, all files in this folder can be viewed and read. Based on the 3-position switch, files can also be written into the device. - Protected Folder - A passcode will be required to access the files in this folder. Based on the 3-position switch, files can also be written into the device.

2. Software to configure Bluetooth automatic or manual pairing to external devices like smartphones, tablets and laptops.
